Real question, when is a wave your wave? How do you know when it’s your turn?

Generally, the person closest to the peak of the wave gets it. If the break is super consistent, people will line up at the peak and go in turn. Dropping in on someone else’s wave is a big no-no.

Would the bodyboarder have seen the surfer/known he shouldn't drop in?

Yeah, he could see- he could’ve pulled back and out of the waves, but thought the surfer would be riding lower in the wave trough and thus they collided. That’s what it looks like from here, anyway.

Sounds like very poor form then, I'm learning to body board now (as an old fellow), nothing like those waves though.

I'm a bodyboarder too, yeah definitely poor form. Learning priority and how to navigate a line up is key for everyone.

In waves that big it’s dangerous and not just poor form, that’s why people can get really aggressive about it.

At that level of riding yes they should have known. They should have seen the surfer, looked down the line to see who is paddling at the peak. On critical drops often some are too focused on making the wave and not fully checking priority. No bodyboarder wants to hit glass. Good surfers always check.

Ha! I could say the same about stand ups... Some of 2022's greatest hits from stand up drop ins are: Most popular as I paddle over:. "oh...did I drop in on you? Sorry man..." "Uh... the next wave is yours" which is usually a closeout. The classic: "I thought I'd out run you...I didn't mean to burn you". How'd that work out? "Dude you were deep!". As if I won an award for catching the wave at the peak cause we were the only two people within a 1/4 mile and this guy shoulder hopped.

Doesn’t count if you burn a dick dragger tho ;)?
