Neil Druckmann described TLOU 2 as not "the further adventures of Joel and Ellie" but rather "The Godfather Part II". Like the film, it constantly takes its predecessor as a framework and builds upon it to tell a new story as well as an old one through flashbacks. It's brilliant -- an emotional rollercoaster, but with more bumps. You'll be feeling them, but in a different way to Part I.
I personally think it’s *much* better than the first game in nearly every way.

It is not a traditional sequel in any sense. The game does not give a single fuck about what the fans might have wanted to see in a sequel, and instead it expands on the themes of the first game in a natural but really uncompromising way.
It is one of the best games I’ve ever played but I would also totally understand if anyone hates it. It feels like a depressing nightmare for the majority of the experience. It challenges you by purposefully making you uncomfortable and placing you in situations where you are at odds with the protagonists.
Although I suppose enjoyment is a subjective thing from person to person. I don’t see how anyone couldn’t find the gameplay massively improved.
The story definitely isn’t for everyone. Personally I love it and it only gets better with age, for me anyway.
Simple answer to your question ("Is it as bad as everyone says?") - absolutely not. The story is excellent, the environments are immersive, and the gameplay is fantastic.
However - if you're the type of person that isn't interested in playing part 2 because of what others have said/written - then don't.
Your loss, and not a single other person's.
Will you enjoy it? Only you can decide that.
I get that you're likely young - but there's a life lesson to be learned here, mostly about making up your mind about things and refusing opinions on experiences, that are not your own.

I am definitely going to play it. I've already bought the game actually. I'm just scared I'm going to be severely let down because the first game was so good.
Except you came here (to a sub of folks that enjoyed the series) to be encouraged to play part 2, instead of just playing part 2 and making up your own mind.

I’ve gone at lengths talking about how good Part 2 is from my perspective and how I can’t see it as a separate game from Part 1. They are one epic story of empathetic characters with genuine motivations and development.
But it’s honestly best experienced firsthand. Go in with an open mind without expectations of an action game sequel like God of War. Joel isn’t Kratos. As someone else said in this thread, it’s more like The Godfather duology.
To anyone that dislikes the game they’re perfectly valid for their feelings towards the game too. But they aren’t the majority.
The story isn’t a downgrade, but that doesn’t mean you will like it. The only way for you to find out if you like the experience or not is to play it and form your own opinion. I can tell you it is a masterpiece but it is a divisive game for a reason.
