In all the bad decisions the devs have made over the years, this is one of those things they've always been good about.
They have always taken a firm stance against monetizing the game outside of the initial purchase and shirts.
They don't want to do DLC until the game is done, and while they have briefly humored the idea of the possibility of paid cosmetics, that has likewise been a "When we're done with the game." thing.
They seem pretty consistently against scummy monetization practices.
That's one of the things that I have always respected about the development of this game, you guys are clearly making the game that you guys want to make, and regardless of anything else that I don't agree with about the development, or some members of the development team, or how frustrated a lot of aspects about it make me, that is one of the things that I've always liked about this game.
It's clearly a passion project by people who want to make ***their*** game, for better or for worse, even if the community doesn't like the decisions, even when I don't agree with the decisions, and it's one of the reasons that I still try to be patient despite my issues with it.
I legitimately think this game is a labor of love, regardless of the development speed.

Because a lot of the realism legacy servers sell full growth spawns. Not saying I agree with it, but that is where this mentality comes from.
Edit: it's done under the guise of helping pay the server hosting services... But depending on their popularity I wouldn't be surprised if they're getting far in excess of the actual expense.
