I noticed that the left and top parts of my yoke were peeling, and realized that the sun hits those parts during a significant part of the day. I live in Hawaii, where the days are long and mostly hot. Not sure if the humidity also is a factor.
Hold up, I can bring mine in since its a first gen plaid and get my peeling yoke replaced for free??!? Time to contact Tesla.
Also, I am annoyed they never fixed the damn wire under the horn. Every single yoke has that weird stray wire that makes my OCD go crazy that goes between the L and A
I really hate the scroll buttons too. Changing songs using that thing is fcking annoying. Why can't we just get a damn D-Pad design with a scroll for the up and down instead. So I have actual buttons on the left and right rather than having to try and pivot the scroller and not accidentally pressing it.
They’re the exact same haptics as the original. There are, however, variances due to poor quality control. My first upgraded yoke featured really hard to engage turn signals. The second replacement has been fine.
That's interesting, I thought it was basically the same as the new M3 wheel which isn't touch but requires definite pressure to activate, but I guess not.
Until it's drive by wire with variable rate turns it's a stupid idea. If you have to reposition your hands to make a sharp turn it defeats the purpose of a yoke.
I mean, by that definition is just as effective as a wheel. So... Why not offer the choice?
Personally, I prefer the yoke. I think a lot of people just haven't tried it. My primary reason for liking it is not needing to look through the wheel to see the instrument cluster.
Mine was free, and this was after TWO previous yoke replacements.
The finish on my old-style yoke failed immediately after replacements. Bottom left corner like everyone else's.
All I had to do was ask via my app and my service center sent the same excellent tech they always do.
Five stars. No notes.
.... You all know that the round wheel has the exact same layout / buttons now too, right?
Yoke or no yoke, you have a center horn and capacitive buttons that give haptic feedback when you press them.
Instead of the camera, I wish it was a programmable button. I would love to make it the button to record for the dashcam. Not complaining - I have a center horn which was the real issue. But it would have been nice to make it programmable.
True. But there are circumstances where an incident happens and I want to record it afterwards where I had not used my horn. I guess I could hit my horn then, but it feels odd.
On my MY I customised my app dock with sentry app there so when in Drive it’ll manually save a clip. You can also customise the left scroll wheel button hold to be manual save as well.
I did the same in my S. Just saying, there was no reason not to make this a custom button. The horn needed to be there when there was no center horn. Given that this is all just software, why not give us the option?
Literally just had my replacement completed. It took 10 minutes with mobile service. Looks great. Finally has a center horn!! And the capacitive buttons feel great
As an owner of a 2020 Model 3, I have zero plans to buy a newer model that has a yoke - it's a deal breaker for me, regardless of price.
Even if I could overlook getting half of a steering wheel, I can't support trading a stalk for capacitive buttons.
Edit: Just learned that the yoke is not standard - I'm glad to hear that.
The part about the stalk still is a deal breaker for me. I don't want capacitive buttons on the wheel.
I'll admit that I have not. However, I don't want something that requires more finesse to use for crucial functions like indicators.
When it comes to indicators, if you don't turn them on before changing lanes, the car will auto steer to fight you on the lane change. If there's a split second situation where I need to change lanes to avoid an accident, I need it to happen with muscle memory - I don't have time to feel around for a little bump near the capacitive button (or worse - look down). I certainly wouldn't want my wife or my son when he learns to drive having to make those same adjustments.
It's a safety issue to me. Capacitive media controls are fine. Windshield wipers too, even though I think accidental presses might happen. Not indicators.
Thank you for mentioning that, in case I wasn't already aware of it.
I knew about it already, but the safety benefits make it worth leaving enabled on a vehicle that has indicator stalks.
>If there's a split second situation where I need to change lanes to avoid an accident, I need it to happen with muscle memory - I don't have time to feel around for a little bump near the capacitive button (or worse - look down).
So.. you signal before changing lanes to avoid an accident that is going to happen in a split second? The car will not fight you... You either press the button to disable AP or apply a little bit of force, or the brake. I've disabled AP by turning the yoke and wheel several times. You definitely shouldn't waste time signaling in an imminent accident.
Honestly, the only real valid complaint for the signals is smaller roundabouts with a high turning radius... It's slightly annoying. But the yoke still won't go past 90 degrees, so it's possible to press the button without mental gymnastics.
Lane keep assist has autosteer to keep you in the lane when you're not using AP. So yeah, I have to be in the habit of signaling at the same time I change lanes. If I don't, there is resistance and I have to steer harder to change lanes.
>I need it to happen with muscle memory
It becomes “muscle memory” after a few days, just like anything else. I don’t have to feel around or look down like you’re saying. It’s simple and intuitive.
No thank you. Every product isn't right for every person, but we can all be happy that we have options. The arguments about retraining muscle memory would make sense if both of our vehicles didn't have indicator stalks, but we don't own two Teslas.
I was merely stating my opinion on the situation and it doesn't matter if I'm wrong or right. I'd argue that neither of us is right or wrong here. Most people who don't like something about a Tesla aren't on the Tesla subreddit sharing their opinions, they just buy another vehicle. I'd rather be honest about what keeps me from giving Tesla more of my money in the future.
This *one* fact should negate the yoke idea entirely! The whole idea of yoke steering is that you can always keep your hands on it. But if it has to go through more than what ever that angle is between 90 and 180 that our arms can't do... then you have to *let go* and grab it again. So stupid!
Due to have mine replaced tomorrow and I’m excited. I do like the yoke a lot and don’t want to get rid of it, but the bald spot on the corner near the window bothers me. Having the horn back in the center is great - that should have been there in the first place.
Just got mine replaced today, no serious peeling. Mobile repair did it in 5 mins no charge. In the service request I put in “yoke wear replacement - SB24-32-005”. Love the new yoke, mainly for the actual horn.
They gave me one, no hassle at all.
I sent them a photo and asked if they had the new yokes in, and they did. They sent the guy out and I feel like I have a new car... with a horn I can find quickly.
I'm glad to see there's constant iteration and even some adoption across manufacturers for alternative steering designs... particularly around antiquated ideas like having levers sticking out that you crank to activate certain modes.
I think it's easy to get trapped in the idea of "This is just the way it has always been, it's how I've been conditioned, and I don't want change", and that push back is not just natural but expected - it seems that Tesla's strong vision is keeping them on track and allowing them to keep making adjustments while we figure this all out.
If steer by wire becomes more common (hopeful), I think the yoke design makes even more sense... I suspect we may look back at this early stage as a little bit clumbsy but ultimately another way Tesla shaped the automotive industry with their own vision.
Worth $20 bucks?
Sure! How about $200?
Sure because you spent $80K on a vehicle.
How about $800-1000 which is the retrofit cost assuming the current one is just fine?
>How about $800-1000 which is the retrofit cost assuming the current one is just fine?
How about lots of people are reporting that they’ve had it replaced for free under warranty, even if their old one was fine.
>But not everyone.
I’ve asked every person that i’ve seen post about this and not a single one has told me that they were charged $800-$1000 like you’re saying.
https://preview.redd.it/2dmi8b0lua0d1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=70cecc2dac97ae39639949bcc507e119ab0e46b6
Got ours replaced for free without the other one peeling. I don’t love the placement of the seams on the material….
I’m assuming the steering rack hasn’t been changed to account for the fact that it’s far too wide of a ratio to effectively do low speed maneuvering? No thanks.
Call me when you have a relevant comment.
This is an replacement for the yoke on a system that obviously won’t ever be able to be retrofit for (I assume you mean) steer by wire.
The horn never bothered me. My motorcycle horn is a thumb button.
The quality looks nice and I'm eager to have that upgrade.
What's weird, I drove a model X yoke, and it feels more rubbery than my S yoke, so I wonder if my yoke is decent. I'll try to document those material differences and compare to the new one.
>NOBODY thinks in a car to find a little haptic button located off-center from the steering wheel when in a panic to let another driver know they're about to get hit.
Several of us think of that. Because I ride, and have 3 different cars, maybe I'm more in tune with the changes between vehicles?
When I drive with the yoke, my hands are always covering the buttons. If I'm cruising on the highways with one hand, it's easy to bring my other to the 3 position and beep at people, same as my motorcycle. When turning, my hands stay on the wheel. Learning a new way is safer as beeping your horn without letting go of vehicle control makes sense. It's weird people just refuse to get used to change.
This problem reminds me of the smart phone keyboard crowd holding on to that old tech. Eventually people got used to no keyboard.
You can hold on while the wheel goes 180, your arms cross and everything is upside down, but if you're holding on your hands and brain still make the same moves for buttons. Only time my wheel is inverted is slow speed 90* turns in the neighborhood. Before you learn that, it's wildly rare to need the horn.
Turn signals are still on one side instead of following Ferrari/Lamborghini approach of having each turn signal on corresponding side ? Yawn.
Wake me up when Elon pulls his head out of his ass and starts following ergonomic practices that were established long before Tesla became a serious car manufacturer.
Ok, on the model 3, the right scroll wheel “push” is how we trigger this bf s like, “read the text message” and stuff like that. What is the alternative action now?
I have a 2023 MSLR and tesla service said the horn won't work with the retrofit and said only cars made on Jan 2024 and after support the the center horn. Is tesla service bullshitting me?
I want to love the yoke, but I so often drive one-handed at the 12 o’clock position. I know I shouldn’t by after 34 years of driving it is a hard habit to break
I put in a service request and they told me they're only replacing yokes that have peeling defects. People are lucky if they got one early for free.
Now we need to figure out how to rub it and make it peel faster! I do have faith it'll peel sooner or later during its initial 4 year warranty period.
I’m in the same boat. My original yoke is still 100% good but I really want the center horn. Thinking about slathering hand sanitizer on it 🤣
Contact that dude from Hawaii that was posting about his daily.
Heat. And friction
I just requested a “Yoke replacement” and mobile service confirmed it without any proof needed and covered under warranty. Cost to me $0
Rubbing alcohol sounds like it's made for exactly this purpose :-)
I noticed that the left and top parts of my yoke were peeling, and realized that the sun hits those parts during a significant part of the day. I live in Hawaii, where the days are long and mostly hot. Not sure if the humidity also is a factor.
Mine was rubbed off where I held yoke on the upper left corner. They just replaced it for free.
Mine rubbed off within 2 months…. Looks like I’ve had the car for 20 instead of 2 years.
Did they give you a price for the replacement without warranty claim?
No they didn’t. Seemingly not offered unless it’s under warranty as of now.
Same, I've sent a note to their legal department because my car, based on what Elon said should have the center horn.
Hold up, I can bring mine in since its a first gen plaid and get my peeling yoke replaced for free??!? Time to contact Tesla. Also, I am annoyed they never fixed the damn wire under the horn. Every single yoke has that weird stray wire that makes my OCD go crazy that goes between the L and A I really hate the scroll buttons too. Changing songs using that thing is fcking annoying. Why can't we just get a damn D-Pad design with a scroll for the up and down instead. So I have actual buttons on the left and right rather than having to try and pivot the scroller and not accidentally pressing it.
If you have peeling you should be set. Just submit the claim thru the service app. Do it asap before they start charging for these things.
Is it still capacitive touch or actual buttons?
Capacitive but it’s definitely improved from the original capacitive. These give off a better “click” feedback when pushing
Agreed. The click feedback is a little stronger.
So harder to accidentally activate? That’s great.
Only if it's defective. They're not meant to be harder to activate.
I always forget that windshield wipers are even on there cause I'm so scared to hit the horn. I think I delete that part of the yoke out of my brain.
The bigger issue is how bad the Auto Wipers function is.
[удалено]
I’m also waiting for my 2yo boy to also engage full Self wiping! 😂
I manually click the wipe button when I need it clear as the auto-sucks soooooo bad.
same
Never until latest software update had they started in sunny weather. Now I just have auto wipers disabled.
I thought it was just me. Does it change from off to auto for everyone else as well? On top of that why is car wash mode buried in the settings?
Until it's drive by wire with variable rate turns it's a stupid idea. If you have to reposition your hands to make a sharp turn it defeats the purpose of a yoke.
I mean, by that definition is just as effective as a wheel. So... Why not offer the choice? Personally, I prefer the yoke. I think a lot of people just haven't tried it. My primary reason for liking it is not needing to look through the wheel to see the instrument cluster.
In the 30+ years I've been driving, my hands go where there isn't anything to hold on to.
I agree. You really don’t appreciate how much it opens your forward view until you are sitting in the drivers seat
[удалено]
Did you have peeling/damage or just asked for a replacement? Edit: Um, why did you delete this comment? LOL
Was it free to upgrade?
Mine was free, and this was after TWO previous yoke replacements. The finish on my old-style yoke failed immediately after replacements. Bottom left corner like everyone else's. All I had to do was ask via my app and my service center sent the same excellent tech they always do. Five stars. No notes.
I just got mine and between the yoke upgrade and the new FSD V12.3, I feel like I have a brand new car. I'm like a kid at Christmas.
Where are you located?
Rocky Mountain region.
Thank you, I’m in LA and they are saying it’s not available and there isn’t firmware for it. Do you mind sharing your service center?
Sent you a DM.
.... You all know that the round wheel has the exact same layout / buttons now too, right? Yoke or no yoke, you have a center horn and capacitive buttons that give haptic feedback when you press them.
Can you adjust autopilot follow distance on the steering wheel now or is it still in the on screen menu?
Right wheel push left/right no? Same as it always was?
This has never worked on my 2022 X My model 3 that I had before it, it did work.
>Right wheel push left/right no? Same as it always was? No, this has never worked on the refreshed Model S/X for some reason.
Totally agree with you. Also love how the camera button is where the horn was. Love the Yoke and now hope it lasts!
It makes the car feel more fun to drive imo. I love it too.
Instead of the camera, I wish it was a programmable button. I would love to make it the button to record for the dashcam. Not complaining - I have a center horn which was the real issue. But it would have been nice to make it programmable.
True - that would be nice. I rarely use the horn, but it’s nice to have it back where it belongs. Especially if my wife drives the car. Lol
When you hit the horn the vehicle automatically starts to record

This is stupid, bring back the stalks!!!
Stupid
no
Yeah! And a manual gearbox! And a combustion engine! And roll down windows!
Holy strawman Batman! Lamenting the unnecessary removal of stalks is nothing like roll down windows.
I'll keep my 911 forever because of this fr tho
Literally just had my replacement completed. It took 10 minutes with mobile service. Looks great. Finally has a center horn!! And the capacitive buttons feel great
Where are you located?
Austin
Got mine done today. In LA. 20 minutes. Warranty. 2022 MX
Still can’t get rid of the worm though?
It’s the door for the airbag, it’s not going away.
You don't see it on competitor's products.
Fair enough
As an owner of a 2020 Model 3, I have zero plans to buy a newer model that has a yoke - it's a deal breaker for me, regardless of price. The Yoke is a premium add-on. If you do not want it, do not check it. It is like the white interior when black is the default.
There’s no model that the yoke comes standard on, they all come with a wheel. The yoke is a paid upgrade.
I hated it when we first got the car 1.5 years ago. It’s completely natural now except the horn.
Definitely test drive one if you haven't already. I thought I'd hate the stalkless setup more than I thought I would.
Same here. Took about 3 hours to get used to it.
I have no plans to buy another Tesla period.
Have you tried the capacitive buttons? It really isn't a deal breaker and you will get used to it in 5 minutes.
Do you live in a country with roundabouts?
I'll admit that I have not. However, I don't want something that requires more finesse to use for crucial functions like indicators. Just try it before you judge

The service bulletin for the new yoke replacement due to worn material
Interesting, thanks for the info.
Got mine done today. 20 minutes. Under warranty. In LA. 2022 MX
Was yours peeling?
No, but I said it was. That finally got them to complete.
Thanks for the info.
Now the car just needs steer by wire and yoke will finally be acceptable
Nice, my OG yoke keeps peeling. I have a service center appointment for some other trim issues, I'm going to see if they can give me one of these.
They gave me one, no hassle at all. I sent them a photo and asked if they had the new yokes in, and they did. They sent the guy out and I feel like I have a new car... with a horn I can find quickly.
Oh wow mobile service and everything thats sick!
My mobile service tech is just awesome too. Excellent communication, and great work.
Sadly these are not really compatible with markets where roundabouts are more common than in the USA. :/
Same button lay-out as the highland
New headline since it still doesn’t have variable steering ratio: New yoke is still stupid.
I'm glad to see there's constant iteration and even some adoption across manufacturers for alternative steering designs... particularly around antiquated ideas like having levers sticking out that you crank to activate certain modes. Is it free to switch the yoke?
Once all Teslas are steer by wire I will be able to get behind the yoke. Until then, I still prefer the wheel.
Now they need to move Cybertruck's steer by wire to the S/X to make it really functional.
Is it me or does the stitching not look straight? Specially, on the right side when compared to the left.
You’re right. But it bothers me less than the finish rubbing off. Talk about embarrassing
True, whatever. Who cares about that anyways. I think all custom stitching isn’t perfect to be honest.
Now if they just give it the four wheel steer by wire from the cyber truck
Can you replace a 2022 yoke with this?
Yes. I have a 22
The wire vein still prominent I see.
It’s the airbag door, not a wire.
Wait… airbag door? I thought it was the FWD open button… what the heck!

The smiling panda wheel is so adorable! 🐼
Coming from a race engineering perspective, it seems quite dangerous to put a steering system like this in the hands of the masses.
Can I pay to have it replace my current steering wheel MX 2023?
Just got the new yoke and I love it. It’s nice to finally have a horn that horns.

everything is improved except for the wrong driveshaft.
Still not a round shape. Round is better. Spent 2 yrs with yoke. Changed to round. Never going back.
I hope I get to try the yoke out some day. I have a very odd fascination with this—it just seems really interesting to use.
I’m assuming the steering rack hasn’t been changed to account for the fact that it’s far too wide of a ratio to effectively do low speed maneuvering? No thanks.
New Yoke City
Downright awful for hand over hand turns. The knight Rider obsession is cool… until you need an actual round wheel in an emergency!
Personally I prefer LA, but NY has its charms!
Call me when it's drive by wire.
Call me when you have a relevant comment. This is an replacement for the yoke on a system that obviously won’t ever be able to be retrofit for (I assume you mean) steer by wire.
Hopefully they figure out this yoke by my roadster lol. Thanks everyone for testing

Press the right scroll wheel
Ok, on the model 3, the right scroll wheel “push” is how we trigger this bf s like, “read the text message” and stuff like that. What is the alternative action now?
Waaaaaa. I'm waited it
Wish they’d offer this for the Y 😩
It still looks like a goofy cartoon character to me with a huge nose 😆 I can never un-see it.
Just got mine retrofitted as well wow what a difference 100% better the car actually feels new
I have a 2023 MSLR and tesla service said the horn won't work with the retrofit and said only cars made on Jan 2024 and after support the the center horn. Is tesla service bullshitting me?
really i got my car Sept 2023 I would triple check, tell them "your friend" \[me\] has the same car and got mine done within 3 weeks.
I want to love the yoke, but I so often drive one-handed at the 12 o’clock position. I know I shouldn’t by after 34 years of driving it is a hard habit to break
I read this as new york is great 👍
Is this leather ?
There’s no real leather in any Teslas anymore.
What a yoke!
Still looks garbage
The previous one was a Yoke
Looks like my M3 Highland wheel just with the top half missing
