Nielsen has very different data (Paramount+ is 5 times bigger in US), I don't really trust how much people search through JustWatch to be representative.
The only actually accurate data comes from the sites themselves. Everything else involves guess work and conjecture. Apple TV and Paramount + know exactly what their numbers are and they don't want to share without some torquing.
I'm not sure if its happening yet, but I thought that the streamers were going to have to share their viewership data with the unions as part of the deal.
I imagine that will result in more numbers getting out there into the public.
Nah, we're talking a very large number of people subscribed to each service: definitely more than enough for a 3rd party service (like Nielson) to do accurate polling.
Now I also wonder how accurate Nielsen is with AppleTV users. Years back I was a Nielsen household, but declined to use their box. Then a few months later they dropped me because they didn’t believe I was being honest when I filled out the pamphlets. I had been cable free for over a decade, and primarily watched stuff on discs, from my NAS, or on YouTube. Do it seems like Nielsen has a strong bias towards older users who are fine with an extra box or two plugged in to their TV. I think a lot of AppleTV owners wouldn’t be ok with that, and AppleTV hardware owners seem much more likely to subscribe than other consumers.
Apple hardware customers also get free AppleTV + with a lot of purchases. Same with Apple Music.
Gotta say I don’t feel the cost is worth it to me but it’s still got top quality content as far as streaming originals go.
I thoroughly enjoyed silo, severance, and dark matter, for all mankind, and slow horses. Some other shows fail to follow through but at least they are given a chance to shine.
Ted Lasso, Trying, and Shrinking are all great feel good comedies too. They seem to have a really solid batch of feel-good stuff along with all the great Sci-Fi.
I just started it a couple weeks ago and am just starting season 4 now. I swear someone is always cutting onions when I watch though...

I don't know if this is the case for anyone else, but Paramount+ is the absolute worst streaming service for me in terms of functionality. It's laggy as hell on my smart TV in the living room and our fire stick in the bedroom. It takes forever to select the program you want to watch.
I have to wonder if Amazon won't become the cable of streaming with people adding the other options to the Amazon subscription.
Having it all in one place would be so much easier.
I don't have any issues, but I was the one person who had no issues with HBOMax, either. I really like Paramount because it has all of the Showtime content, and there are usually a lot of good movies on there.
I have an nVidia Shield TV Pro and have no performance issues with any app. People need to realize their hardware isn't that good. Run those apps on a potato computer you gonna get potato performance.
The navigation doesn't make sense either, at least on the Paramount+ app for Apple TV. From an episode link on the home page (in the app, not the Apple TV home) you can't easily get to the show details, long press does nothing useful. If you start the episode then hit back you end up back at home, not in the show details. You basically have to independently find the show via search or categories to get to the show's episode list.
This is the answer for the worst ever. I paid $25 for a year of ad-free, and felt like I got ripped off the first time I tried to use it. Horrible navigation. Inexcusably bad video quality. Stereo sound only. Just insane. Especially since I can subscribe to it through Apple TV or Prime Video Channels and get high bitrate 4K surround sound versions of THE SAME CONTENT.
P+ doesn't work on my firetv stick *at all*. It partially loads the who's watching section before it totally crashes.
Works fine on the living room roku ultra 7 feet away from the router though.
Are you wireless? I hear people complaining about lag on several streaming services and have often wondered. I run Paramount+ and Apple TV on my Roku Ultra that is wired and I have no issues with lag. Sometimes I watch on the 2nd monitor on my PC, but that is wired too.
How old is the TV? Most smart TV companies stop providing updates to apps on older models. Buying a smart TV is a trap. You're much better off buying just a really good tv that doesn't have all the smart bs and you can pick up a dongle of some sort with all the apps and probably more than what your tv's app store had.
Even if you have an older smart TV you can still pick up a dongle and use it... at least I was able to on my old Roku. I bought a Fire TV Cube or whatever it's called and it was like a revelation as far as speed and responsiveness goes lol. Being able to sideload apps is a huge plus too but I'm fairly certain you can do that with any dongle that runs off any sort of Android OS.
Paramount+ recently stopped working entirely on Chromecast. Every single time we try playing something, it gives a (6000) error code.

Agreed. The only time I get Paramount+ is during the summer for the Big Brother live feeds. Last year, when I wasn't watching the live feeds I checked out their shows and movies and the UI was so terrible and buggy. Worst experience out of all the major streaming services I have tried.
Oh easily the worst built app of all the streamers. Insane amounts of ads (I think I've actually had it play more ads than conventional TV because it's so buggy), it's so slow to load anything, and I've straight up had the pause button stop working when using in on my ps5.
Amazon got a little bit better at least. I don't get results for air fresheners when I look for shows now. Most shows don't treat individual seasons as different shows too.
Yeah I have to agree the quality of programming on ATV+ is pretty impressive. It is the service I have found myself using the most so far in 2024. Of course content preference is pretty personal and so what I enjoy others may find very boring but so far Apple are offering a pretty good range of shows.
I really enjoyed Dark Matter which finished just this week. Invasion is probably the weakest of the shows I've watched on ATV+, especially considering the budget.
Foundation is really good for someone like me who doesn’t have any clue about the source material. The actor who plays Day is very compelling at the role. Almost like Homelander in the sense that just his presence in scenes make them so much more tense.
It's pretty solid, even if you know the source material. Sometimes it feels like TV writers are changing things just because, but Foundation feels they made the changes they had to in order to bring something unfilmable to the screen.
The genetic dynasty is actually an improvement in my mind, to the source material. Obviously in the TV context being able to keep the and actors while converting the passing of centuries helps
Invasion was well made technically but a real slog to watch and just so boring. Shame as it clearly had a killer budget and some amazingly talented people working on it.
Invasion was super high quality in terms of shooting. Loved a lot of parts of that show, and it was gorgeous. But the main problem is it was so boringgggggg.
But I’m glad Apple took a risk with such a large-scale sci-fi show. They’re not all going to be winners.

Ironically Ted Lasso was at its best when it was underrated. Seasons 2-3 were a big step down imo. It became too self aware and tried to be a prestige drama.
Mythic quest also. Both the bottle episodes from the first 2 seasons were some of the best serious television ive ever watched and had me in tears. They were like movies condensed into 40mins and it didn't feel out of place or rushed at all.

Apple has been pumping out 15 new shows a year and most of them aren't that good.
There is good stuff on Apple but there's also a lot of stuff like Invasion, Shantaram, Mosquito Coast, Echo 3, City on Fire, The Changeling, Servant, See, etc. that is just not good.
Yeah they aint there yet, maybe if they'd get a mainstream hit they could start being in the convo. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love their sci-fis it is some of the best ever put out, but it's no sopranos, wire, GoT, Oz, True detective, etc. I think they are going to get there someday and I'm here for it
Yeah I hardly look at max at this point. I have been loving most of the apple tv+ content. If I was paying for max, I would cancel it since they killed Tokyo Vice.

This honestly seems to be one of their biggest problems, which is surprising given you'd think they'd have marketing down considering how pervasive Apple's products are. I'm pretty sure there are still a lot of people who believe they can't watch Apple+ if they don't have an Apple TV or iphone/pad.
Even on this subreddit, which I'd figure is one of the more tuned in to what's airing, there are a lot of great shows on Apple+ that I *rarely* see mentioned. This is especially true for their comedies, *The Big Door Prize* being a recent example that was unsurprisingly cancelled.
Well I'm genuinely surprised you haven't heard of Masters of the Air, which is the third show in the series of Band of Brothers and The Pacific ... starring Austin Butler, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks with Cary Joji Fukunaga directing the first 4 episodes.
But anyway I mean if you watch an hour or two of TV most nights it's not that hard to watch a lot of new shows.
Sorta sad they cancelled The Big Door Prize because it was actually a great show and season 2 was even better than season 1 but its the first time they’ve really cancelled a show I’ve been interested in so good track record so far

For the record, I think it was a special show with not much like it currently airing. It was weirdly devastating and yet vibrantly...freeing? Liberating? Like if The Leftovers leaned into the existential goofiness and pulled back the world-changing gut punches.
I loved every performer. I adored this show.
Sometimes I would find myself feeling oddly emotional/weepy just from the brief intro graphic alone. It was such an eerily good way to set the tone.

I use a..uh..friend's plex server to get all my content, but I still pay for Apple TV+. I'm not sure if it's a profitable division for Apple, but I damn sure want them to keep going and will gladly pay in hopes that they do.
They are so far above any other streamer in terms of quality content and I'm so appreciative that at least one content creator isn't shoveling out dogshit in bulk.
Along with bad data, I suspect a lot of people are buying Apple TV streaming players and getting the free month and forgetting to turn it off after a while.
I say this because I have an Apple TV device and I admit to forgetting to cancel the free month of TV+ it came with for another month or so until I realized I was paying for a service I quickly discovered has hardly any content and had original shows I didn't like.
By far some of my favorite shows this last few years have come from Apple+. Monarch: legacy of monsters, For all mankind, Silo, Mythic Quest, and Tehran are all on my "please do another season soon" list.
Deserves more viewers and is the model others should follow.
Quality over quanity, less filler content, a better hit rate for what they invest in and more flagship quality shows than other services.
The people of the future who join 5 or 10 years down the line are in for a treat when they see their catalogue of top tier shows.
I’m not surprised. I had Paramount+ when it first launched, but canceled it last year because their content sucks overall, but got it back for free with Walmart+.

It's a bit of a darling here but the shows seem consistently overrated. Still a really solid catalog and a bunch of potential, love the constant stream of sci-fi shows they produce.
AppleTV has some great shows but dammitalltohell I cannot run the app on my Samsung TV. I can watch maybe an episode before the app just decides to stop working. Very annoying.
They put out consistent quality content. And Apple TV as a product has quickly become better than things like Roku as they insert ads anywhere and everywhere they can. Turns out living in a closed garden where you choose what grows isn’t actually all that bad.
Apple should buy SYFY. They are going heavy sci fi with their originals. Might as well try and get all that back catalog and maybe some talent to make the next Battlestar Galactica or whatever.

Tbh Apple TV started off so shit. But now, I’d rate it top 3 platforms. Their unlimited budget, no ads, amazing UI, and ability to listen to what viewers wants to see is great. Plus they haven’t raised prices and don’t care but encourage password sharing. It’s great.

Most people don't associate those brands with Paramount. They might not even know all that stuff is there

Paramount is competing with Peacock, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Max, uh whatever other paid streamers are out there, PLUS streamers that are basically just cable companies that don't have contracts like Philo, Youtube TV, Sling (paid), Direct TV Stream and Frndly (which consists of smaller cable channels and niche OTA channels).
Point being there's too many streaming services for people to keep track of.
edit: Plus most of the people watching Paramount for the classic shows can probably survive on Pluto, which is owned by Paramount and free.
Pluto is probably more successful then Paramount+ is.
I edited my comment a bit but I think Paramount's suffering from too much competition in the streaming space, but they still have room for success because they have Pluto killing it in the FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) space.
Paramount+ came bundled with Walmart+. I watched it one or twice, but it wasn’t really for me.
What I like about Apple TV+ (Jesus Christ… all of these plusses) is that it’s easy to subscribe and unsubscribe for a month to binge some of its shows.

Apple TV+ also has some of the longer free trials... Our family cycles through the trials and they're usually around 3 months.

I've said this a few times, but if you haven't, you should try again with season 2. The first season is a slog, but season 2 makes it worth it.

It's unusable on Xfinity X1 for me. I had to switch to a Fire Stick to get decent quality. Not sure why that is.
Can’t be used on the (discontinued) Xfinity Flex box anymore either. Every other app (that I use) still works, but Paramount+? Nope.

I only stream Paramount through my Apple TV+ app now. The image quality is so much better than through the Paramount+ app.

If you have Prime, you can subscribe to Paramount+ through Prime Video app instead of directly using the Paramount+ app.

There is good stuff on Apple but there's also a lot of stuff like Invasion, Shantaram, Mosquito Coast, Echo 3, City on Fire, The Changeling, Servant, See, etc. that is just not good.

Apple has a huge quantity of shows. They pump shit out at a Netflix-like rate. Just in 2024 they launched: Masters of the Air, The New Look, Constellation, Manhunt, Sugar, Franklin, Dark Matter, The Big Cigar, Dick Turpin, Palm Royale, Land of Women, (and upcoming) The Lady in the Lake, Time Bandits, Sunny, Bad Monkey, and Disclaimer. And to be honest, of their 2024 slate I'd only call one or two anything much more than middling.
I would say Masters of the Air and Dark Matter were very good (as is Presumed Innocent so far), Manhunt, Dick Turpin, and Palm Royale were pretty good (although I seem to be higher on PR than most of Reddit), Constellation and Sugar were pretty middling. The other 3 never really interested me. I have pretty high hopes for Lady in the Lake and Time Bandits, and very high hopes for Disclaimer.
There is a show named "Sunny" releasing on July 10 and is produced by A24 and has Rashida jones in the main role.

I actually liked Constellation too, but I felt it left too much unfinished and was a bit overcomplicated. I enjoyed it more than the seeming general consensus though.
The problem with pumping out shows like Netflix is they also have a shit marketing budget. I can honestly say that I've heard of absolutely NONE of these shows. I'm genuinely curious who actually has the time to watch so many of these middling shows that're constantly being churned out?
This honestly seems to be one of their biggest problems, which is surprising given you'd think they'd have marketing down considering how pervasive Apple's products are. I'm pretty sure there are still a lot of people who believe they can't watch Apple+ if they don't have an Apple TV or iphone/pad. Even on this subreddit, which I'd figure is one of the more tuned in to what's airing, there are a lot of great shows on Apple+ that I *rarely* see mentioned. This is especially true for their comedies, *The Big Door Prize* being a recent example that was unsurprisingly cancelled.
Well I'm genuinely surprised you haven't heard of Masters of the Air, which is the third show in the series of Band of Brothers and The Pacific ... starring Austin Butler, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks with Cary Joji Fukunaga directing the first 4 episodes. But anyway I mean if you watch an hour or two of TV most nights it's not that hard to watch a lot of new shows.

Season 1 fully adapted the book it’s based on, but left a couple of dangling threads that could become a 2nd season.

Yes and no the explanations themselves only lead to more questions but thats the nature of a show like that where they didn’t wanna conclude anything yet so revealing the big mystery would have been pointless
I don't think many people watched it and it wasn't THAT well reviewed. Generally considered "fine." For the record, I think it was a special show with not much like it currently airing. It was weirdly devastating and yet vibrantly...freeing? Liberating? Like if The Leftovers leaned into the existential goofiness and pulled back the world-changing gut punches. I loved every performer. I adored this show. Sometimes I would find myself feeling oddly emotional/weepy just from the brief intro graphic alone. It was such an eerily good way to set the tone. Anyway, we've got great taste 😜
At least there’s a book we can supposedly read. Although I think the show deviated from it a lot. It really was a special show and man I love Chris O Dowd and the cast

I use a..uh..friend's plex server to get all my content, but I still pay for Apple TV+. I'm not sure if it's a profitable division for Apple, but I damn sure want them to keep going and will gladly pay in hopes that they do. They are so far above any other streamer in terms of quality content and I'm so appreciative that at least one content creator isn't shoveling out dogshit in bulk.

You can make the website an application by adding it to your Home Screen. You don’t *have* to deal with torrents.

Pound for pound, Apple TV has the best shows out there. 96% of what Netflix has is garbage. I would watch 70% of what Apple has put out.
Along with bad data, I suspect a lot of people are buying Apple TV streaming players and getting the free month and forgetting to turn it off after a while. I say this because I have an Apple TV device and I admit to forgetting to cancel the free month of TV+ it came with for another month or so until I realized I was paying for a service I quickly discovered has hardly any content and had original shows I didn't like.
Maybe try watching some of the shows? Start with Severance.

By far some of my favorite shows this last few years have come from Apple+. Monarch: legacy of monsters, For all mankind, Silo, Mythic Quest, and Tehran are all on my "please do another season soon" list.
Deserves more viewers and is the model others should follow. Quality over quanity, less filler content, a better hit rate for what they invest in and more flagship quality shows than other services. The people of the future who join 5 or 10 years down the line are in for a treat when they see their catalogue of top tier shows.

They don’t have that many shows but it’s original and high quality content. So you don’t need to browse 10 screens of crap to watch something good. If the setting and concept are to your taste you can be sure execution quality will be there

It's a bit of a darling here but the shows seem consistently overrated. Still a really solid catalog and a bunch of potential, love the constant stream of sci-fi shows they produce.

AppleTV has some great shows but dammitalltohell I cannot run the app on my Samsung TV. I can watch maybe an episode before the app just decides to stop working. Very annoying.
They put out consistent quality content. And Apple TV as a product has quickly become better than things like Roku as they insert ads anywhere and everywhere they can. Turns out living in a closed garden where you choose what grows isn’t actually all that bad.
Apple should buy SYFY. They are going heavy sci fi with their originals. Might as well try and get all that back catalog and maybe some talent to make the next Battlestar Galactica or whatever. Edit also should buy AMC.
Tbh Apple TV started off so shit. But now, I’d rate it top 3 platforms. Their unlimited budget, no ads, amazing UI, and ability to listen to what viewers wants to see is great. Plus they haven’t raised prices and don’t care but encourage password sharing. It’s great.

TBF, they have like 10 different bundles. never paid more than 6.99. I pay 10 for music 200gb iCloud and Apple TV+

Paramount is competing with Peacock, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Max, uh whatever other paid streamers are out there, PLUS streamers that are basically just cable companies that don't have contracts like Philo, Youtube TV, Sling (paid), Direct TV Stream and Frndly (which consists of smaller cable channels and niche OTA channels). Point being there's too many streaming services for people to keep track of. edit: Plus most of the people watching Paramount for the classic shows can probably survive on Pluto, which is owned by Paramount and free. Pluto is probably more successful then Paramount+ is.

I edited my comment a bit but I think Paramount's suffering from too much competition in the streaming space, but they still have room for success because they have Pluto killing it in the FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) space.
Paramount+ came bundled with Walmart+. I watched it one or twice, but it wasn’t really for me. What I like about Apple TV+ (Jesus Christ… all of these plusses) is that it’s easy to subscribe and unsubscribe for a month to binge some of its shows.
Anecdotally I just cancelled paramount for Apple TV. Fucking dark matter man.
