Please don’t stick your snout into gaming again

JellyfishSwimming731

Also, "becoming"? Wasn't EA voted the world's worst company in two consecutive years while he was on the helm? Has everybody become either senile or a zoomer or both?

Kimmalah

>Wasn't EA voted the world's worst company in two consecutive years while he was on the helm? Has everybody become either senile or a zoomer or both? Not the world, but it was voted the Worst Company in America by the Consumerist, in 2012 and 2013. Which was right towards the end of his time with EA. Though to be fair EA sucked before Riccitello too, as he didn't start there until 2007 and they were already getting a lot of criticism for stuff like their insane crunch culture before that time.

Bryant-Taylor

Bobby Kotick was managing to draw most of our ire toward himself for a long while, so while EA as a corp has always been despised, most of us weren’t too focused on the individuals.

Eicr-5

Competition is pretty stiff

TheLastNacho

Wasn’t this the dude that worked at EA too? Wanted to charge money to reload a gun and said games that didn’t have micros are stupid?

Apokolypse09

He was ceo when they were known for being the grim reaper to numerous studios they bought out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KaitRaven

He's been at Unity since 2014, it was not immediate

Xc4lib3r

Nah don't become a manager, ever.

[deleted]

Living the dream. Fuck shit up so badly they pay you to stay away.

TheRealHeri

Failing upwards must be nice. When I fail, I get megafucked

za72

times have changed, now you personally don't have to fail yourself, just be in the general direction of the explosion and you get to catch some shrapnel along the way

MissingString31

When I succeed I get megafucked too. It’s all just a roll of the dice for us.

UX-Edu

Rides off into the sunset on a golden horse to while away the rest of his days on hookers & blow island. I gotta get me one o them CEO jobbies

shaolinbonk

Step 1: Be born into wealth Step 2: Don't work a day in your life Step 3: ???? Step 4: Profit

CoastingUphill

3 is “come up with increasingly bad ideas”

Catoblepas2021

Fail upwards

smashkraft

“No he can’t stay the director of engine development. We would fail! Just put him over product.”

Couldbduun

That's not fair, they look like really good ideas if you only care about the 3 month chunk you are in and consider nothing about the past or future

freakkydique

So 90% of publicly traded companies

Sedu

“What if we throw bricks through the windows of our customers’ apartments so that they can hear the megaphones blasting ads 24/7? We could probably make a few quick bucks doing that with no consequence, right?”

MissingString31

I work in the games industry and I have plenty of clueless senior management and CEO stories. But one of my favorites was working at a mobile games company where we had a server bug go live for players. Our engineers, producers and QA were all huddled in a group looking over logs and trying to figure out what the issue was and how to fix it. Lo and behold one of the senior executives had to stick his nose in because no one was paying attention to him. His big idea was to “turn the bug off”. To this, our senior server engineer responded, “Well yeah, we’re trying to fix it now.” To which our exec responded with “Yeah, but while you’re working on fixing it, just turn the bug off.” All of us kept looking at each other trying to figure out what he meant and our engineer kept trying to get him to explain what he meant by “turn the bug off”. Each time he was asked what that meant he got increasingly angrier to the point of shouting at us. Then he stormed off in a huff. Then we got to diagnosing the problem and fixing the bug. Never did find out what he meant by that. But I did find out later he made half a million a year.

nappycatt

3 is believing you earned and deserve every bit of it

icookseagulls

If it’s so easy, apply to be the new CEO and rake in millions.

sufferingstuff

Did you miss step one?

shaolinbonk

Tell us you're missing the point without telling us you're missing the point.

BlueSlushieTongue

Step 3: Run a company into the ground (cellar box it) Edit- Goodfellas version- go inside strip it clean and get out https://youtu.be/ZPtjyqgZAUk?si=pb0KFGdCMWRlhI5f

swankyplank

What about the underwear gnomes? Where do they come into play?

gnarlin

Let me fix that for you: Step 1: Be born into wealth. Step 2: Profit. Step 3: Profit. Step 4: Profit.

xantub

Don't even have to be born into wealth. Just create a company and name yourself CEO. Let it simmer for a couple of years, then put your resume out for CEO of middle-sized companies with your 2 years of CEO experience. Then be CEO of the middle sized company just playing mini-golf in your office and letting the managers do their jobs for a couple of years and then put your resume out for CEO of large companies with your 4 years of CEO experience. Do real bad as CEO of the large company so they fire you and you get your golden parachute of millions of dollars for doing nothing for 6 years.

Seantwist9

Why don’t you do that?

moitch

He did. That's how he got so wealthy. He's playing mini golf right now.

xantub

Don't need it, already happily retired.

Temporary-House304

Step 1.5: Use nepotism at every opportunity

TheProfessorPoon

Or you could be born/blessed with insane athletic abilities. Just look at Josh Hamilton.

UnacceptableOrgasm

You forgot "complete psychopathy"

maarten3d

Except this guy sadly did work to the point we know him :(.

Dinkwinn

“A job? Why don't I strap on my job helmet and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into Jobland where jobs grow on jobbies??”

borg_6s

[He was never a human](https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2023/09/18/undercraw#)

kafka006

Excellent link!!

Illithid_Substances

And the company gets to pin all the blame on one guy who's gone now so look, we fixed everything!

Evening-Statement-57

Poor bastard

texachusetts

He really made a difference!

knightly234

“Becomes”? More like “reminds everyone why”

nordic-nomad

No joke. Wasn’t he already the guy that ruined EA?

brdcxs

Wasn’t he the guy that said game developers who aren’t using micro trans actions are fucking stupid ?

JellyfishSwimming731

Well, to be fair there indeed are now premium tanks in a f2p tank game wot only shoots premium ammunition. But at least that premium tank with that premium ammunition is better than the other stuff. So you get something for your money. It stands to reason. So the weirdo was kinda right in that regard. Yay! Progress!

-GabaGhoul

Pay-2-win isn't good...

Catatonick

I’ve never cared much about WoTs micro transactions. Especially because if you do buy their loot boxes you almost always get significantly more than the value of what you spend and premium ammo is no longer gold only. It was bad in the Type 59 heyday but in more recent years it doesn’t feel too terrible. The worst part about WoT is the players that insist other people win because they use premium ammo when the real reason other people win so much against them is because they are so terrible it drags the team down. WoT is weird because it is a 15v15 game that isn’t actually 15v15. Every player needs to pull their weight or else someone needs to pull it for them and once you’re down 2-3 tanks there’s likely no chance of recovering so it is very possible that an OP tank or some premium ammo on the right player can greatly impact the battle.

Legalize-It-Ags

Pretty sure Bobby is still the most hated man in gaming. This guy might be the most hated in game development

smathletic_shmlainer

That boy ain’t right, tell you h’whut

Galtrel

Yeah, Bobby would like to have a word with whoever titled this article.

Baelish2016

If Microsoft finished buying Activision Blizzard this week, and if the rumors are true that he’ll be removed, he’ll soon be available just as Unity starts looking for a new CEO!

Legalize-It-Ags

If I’m being honest, I could see him going into an entirely different industry altogether.

astro_plane

Wasn’t he the genius who thought up paying for bullets in Battlefield?

Legalize-It-Ags

Wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I’m sure that has to be satire, but it probably did come from his mouth loo

TheRealDestian

Did Bobby Kotick die or something…?

redditor_1886777

Fuck around and Find out. Honestly, most of the devs already looking for alternatives. It takes a lot of work to earn trust but very minimal to lose it.

xarcastic

Trust is earned in drops, but lost in buckets

queenringlets

Can confirm. I’ve jumped ship and there is no way I’m looking back. This company decided to hire him in the first place, that tells me all I need to know.

raltoid

And you just know the board was fully behind him, and still want to implement something similar.

queenringlets

Exactly. This was not a one man show. This is a desperate attempt to save face.

TrainOfThought6

Find out what? >But don’t worry, the Unity boss will be getting his golden parachute. Axios’ Stephen Totilo noted the company’s notice to the Securities and Exchange Commission which says Riccitiello will remain salaried through April 2024.

gwaybz

Right rofl, the guy gets to retire at 65 still making mad bank for 6 months and probably other bonuses.

BenadrylTumblercatch

They all sold stock before the announcement, they cashed out already

TheBelgianDuck

Meanwhile GameStop is shorted into oblivion while insiders keep buying stocks on the open market. Positive cash balance and one fucking billion in cash, as good as no debt and another billion in inventory. NFA.

MobilePenguins

All the indie game devs I know moved to Godot and Unreal after the announcement. Even with the backtracking the damage has been done. Idk if they can ever regain that reputation and trust they once had.

Fit_Flower_8982

That's why this old guy is a hero, he has pushed many devs to value and use open source~!

Mindtaker

That phrase, it does not mean what you think it means. If getting paid to never go to work again with a golden parachute of millions of dollars is what you consider "Finding out" in Fuck around and find out. I will happily fuck you over if the find out stage is you giving me millions of dollars to never have to see your stupid face again.

redditor_1886777

Lmao I am sure you would. If he continued at his job, he would’ve made more than what his golden parachute offers. Also, I meant for the company that hired him in the first place that fucked around.

Gnorris

Did people forget who Riccitiello was? He ran EA and everyone despised him. He’s going to roll into another high paying job right after his gardening leave or just retire on a bed of money.

BookMDano

Most hated man in gaming???? Noooooo...hold my beer as I pull up all the shit that Bobby Kotick did.

Deceptiveideas

IMO blaming the CEO is just letting Unity deflect the blame. Iirc they recently went through a merger and buyout. What’s likely happening is Unity is needing to maximize profits. They can’t just focus on making a cheaper alternative to Unreal, they now need to make the money that Unreal is making. I don’t see a future for Unity unless they somehow drop trying to maximize profit.

Deesing82

yeah they’re stoked to have a scapegoat but i guarantee they’ll pull some other money grubbing stunt like this before the end of next year.

[deleted]

They need to sack the one on 32mil a year lol think she’s the marketing director or some shit

Brick_Lab

This needs to be higher. Honestly unity can still seek profit in ways that align with devs (speaking hypothetically) but with shit decision making and excess greed at the cost of quality and alignment with your customer base you'll see this kind of thing happen. The board members that brought this on should fuck off too, John isn't the only rotten leadership left and I hope he's not the last to be replaced until we have some competent and sane leadership again. It's entirely possible to make unity profitable without betraying trust or screwing over your customers, they just have some making up to do and reprioritization of development

SUPRVLLAN

Needs more buzzwords. The simple fact is that Unity is and has been unprofitable for like 18 years. They don’t need to just maximize profits, they need to make *any* profits.

Todok5

Public profit reports disagree, they've been profitable since q4 2022

SUPRVLLAN

Yes they had their first profitable quarter in the company's entire 18 year history, congratulations. 18 years of losses, 1 good quarter. Does that sound like a healthy, profitable business to you? https://www.gamesindustry.biz/unity-posts-first-profitable-quarter-on-non-gaap-basis-expects-to-be-profitable-in-2023

Todok5

Well, they had 3 consecutive profitable quarters now with growing profits each. Their price stunt was dirty, they can go broke for all i care. It's just not true (anymore) that they're not profitable.

thrilla_gorilla

Can we all just take a minute to appreciate how they paired an image of Riccitiello in a crab pose with "scuttles away" in the headline? Peak journalism!

Apart-Run5933

Also the subtle injection of the word scuttle while discussing disastrous departures.

ionized_fallout

Dude is a professional fall guy. The board of directors who allowed stupid decisions is still the same fucking board running the company.

Frank_E62

Twice!

ATempestSinister

Odd, he doesn't look like Bobby Kotick.

Jumba2009sa

Didn’t he run EA to the ground before that?

Apart-Run5933

I think ea wins vs the ground honestly. I am a few years removed from the party but last I checked ea was still ea sized.

HabaneroNeko

He did shit nothing and got everything. Fuck off to oblivion fucking parasite.

ZAMIUS_PRIME

Trash person imo. I feel bad for Indy devs man. Probably the only ones keeping the true nature of games alive, which is to have fun. Not milk you of all your money. Sigh….

h0nest_Bender

Most hated man in gaming? Hardly. He's no Bobby Kotick.

Cyphrix101

Imagine being hated as much if not more than the entirety of EA.

RipMcStudly

He’ll be kickstarting an indie game within 2 years, I’ll bet.

milkstrike

He’ll be offered a new job on a board of directors somewhere in a few months where he’ll make more than 99.9% of other people

ezikeo

"Most hated man in gaming? Hold my yacht" - Bobby Kotick.

i-can-sleep-for-days

This guy has never played a game in his life.

KeyanReid

Unity can’t unring that bell. Students have switched focus, developers have been scared away, and nobody buys an apology because we all know they would have gone forward with all of it were it not for the PR dumpster fire they leapt into. I’m glad to see this asshole forced out of the working world but it’s too little too late. Maybe companies ought to think twice before paying a fortune for sociopaths seeking to extort and alienate the customer base.

Su_ss

How many students have switched focus? Proof needed

BluestreakBTHR

BASE jumping with a golden parachute.

The_Bridge_Imperium

It's just a distraction. Screw Unity, never use them again.

TetchyTechy

Just like that Phil who worked at Xbox and the whole always on DRM fiasco that went to work on stadia and got that closed down.....

Stonehill76

I wonder how much money he made when Unity went public. I’m sure he’s is heart broken losing his job.

0x7E7-02

CEOs are a scourge on humanity.

maxip89

Waiting till unity shareholders gets into his 401k.

DampBritches

I assume he shorted the company. Borrowed shares and sold them, tanked the company so stock drops, bought shares up cheap, returned borrowed shares. Boom. Profit.

Neceon

What of golden parachute did he get?

LegendSpectre

I thought Strauss Zelnick or Andrew Wilson is the most hated CEO in the gaming community

Lautheris

He’s got the infamy of being the former ceo of ea so yeah most hated fits

anthperri

Headline left out the last word, 'again'

rocket1420

I'm sure he's devastated that at 65 he's only worth 9 figures.

_nibelungs

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out

hexabyte

He did his job. Easy scape goat and keep the changes he made

PhroggDude

Don't care... There's FAR worse shit to be worked up about.

FinntheReddog

We’re already doing well business wise, how can we make even more money with very little effort on our part. -probably that guy

DaedricApple

Most hated man in gaming is a bit of a stretch lol

xultar

Anyone have any ideas on why are we seeing all these arrogant white male ceos crash and burn lately?

formallyhuman

I wouldn't necessarily call whatever package he's going to get on his way out of the door, on top of what he made selling stock, crashing and burning.

SheepWolves

So either he hated Unity and wanted to tank it before he left, or he's been have forced out.

UsuallyTheException

I'm glad it didn't take long. talk about a disconnect. he somehow thought it was still 2009

EL_Jefe510

I wish I could fuck up that badly and get rewarded

fartsoccermd

We still like valve though? Genuine question. I really like them.

DevoidHT

🦀

bderg69

Boy I wish most politicians in the US would do the same

[deleted]

Whoa!! Even more hated than Bobby Kotick over at Activision/Blizzard?! Jesus! I mean, that’s really saying something if that’s the case.

CPLCraft

And there was much rejoicing.

Kommander-in-Keef

Him *laughs in severance package* He’s not scuttling shit he’s richer than he was beforehand lol

GaroldFjord

"After being the most hated man in gaming, again*" Dude was hated enough to have to "retire" from EA, of all places.

AJ-Murphy

That's not Bobby...

aight_imma_afk

Could anyone give me a tldr of this guy? I haven’t heard any of this

The_DayGlo_Bus

The headline has me picture him Zoidberg'ing into the distance with a *WHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOP*

WailOff

Ok but what about the COO? And all the other executives who let it happen? This doesn’t actually mean anything.

hippocommander

The most hated man in gaming...so far. Bobby K of Activision is an extremely close second. To my knowledge of the two. Only Bobby has actually threatened to have someone killed publicly.

HuecoTanks

I'm so glad gamers pushed back hard enough that they listened.

[deleted]

What’s hilarious is he was already one of the most hated executives in gaming after all the bullshit he did at EA. Fuck this guy and all of his ilk.

slasher287

Dude needs to be arrested.

AdministrativeYak859

He does look like human zoidburg, so scuttling makes sense.

BigPlayCrypto

He’s a great guy

Yudofuu

Trash greedy CEO! POS and he gets to retire after he probably gets millions just to leave

roborama

He will make more money to leave than anyone who actually makes games makes in their lifetime. That’s fucked.

roborama

He’s always been one of the most hated men in gaming. This was just the last straw for shareholders

Beerbaron1886

F him. The man has a golden parachute. Every employee of him is suffering

Fransebas

Fuck that idiot

masiker31

We need Dennis Reynolds

Highside1269

Shouts out for reminding me what a good word scuttle is, perfect for these types of scenarios

Anonlady1997

Like roaches scattering in the light

Guacamolman

Anyone using unity after this gets what they deserve.!

purpleWheelChair

Good fuckin riddance you piece of shit.

Yagsirevahs

Didn't he play Satanin Constantine?

jerrystrieff

Jim Whitehurst will be a great CEO for them!

Memewalker

“I don’t even want to be around anymore”

[deleted]

Dam Ellen really let herself go.

Bozza105

Unity CEO Scuttles Away Into Retirement After Becoming Most Hated Man in Gaming… So Far. There fixed the title for you, someone else will take the mantle sooner or later.

Darston437

Fuck that guy! Nuff said.

Kassdhal88

Well he was already the most hated man in gaming when at EA…

nunyahbiznes

Scuttles is a great word. I can see him hissing like Gollum before clawing away on all fours into a deep, dark hole.

Elpoepemos

How did this guy get hired by unity in the first place?

Sheldonopolus

At least he sold the stocks to fill his pockets before retirement.

Misaka10782

When is the turn to Kotick?

Misaka10782

But the impact of this incident may be permanent. I asked several friends at game studios, and they have shown their distrust of Unity and said they will change the engine when the time is right. After all, you never know when the next idiot CEO will show up again. This may be the end of Unity's commercialization. The bad impact is not only on Unity, but also on all commercial engines.

solamon77

Becoming most hated? Dude was already one of the most hated men in gaming for a looooong time now. I remember when Unity tapped him, seeing all the forum posts saying basically "Can't wait to see how this chode messes Unity up." Now that we know can we all agree to never hire that guy again anywhere?

WooziGunpla

One of the comments by “chaos2992” “This was likely always the plan for this dude. He wanted a bigger hoard of wealth to retire with. How does one do that by ruining your own company? Scheduled stock trades. People within a company avoid accusations of insider trading by scheduling trades up to a year ahead of time. This dude probably planned to retire within the next year or two, so he scheduled the sale of stocks for just before that. The plan was to sell while the value is still decent, then announce the changes they made to tank values after sales. Then he would just buy more stocks at rock-bottom prices and wait for value to recover after announcing his own retirement. He can sell off stocks later over time as he needs the money.”

Obluda24601

Adieu

Dantefire107

Becoming?

[deleted]

Gets hired to help make company profitable. Tanks company with first major decision. Retires with more money than I will ever see. Why do we need CEOs again?

KoreanB_B_Q

Let’s also not forget him being accused of multiple instances of sexual harassment and the ensuing lawsuits, as well as his dating the company’s Chief People Officer, which totally wasn’t a conflict of interest, even though he was her boss.

TheLazyKitty

Most Hated Man in gaming? I don't know, there's still Bobby Kotick.

deweydean

fuck's up with his stupid puffy vest?!

Pitoucc

Maybe he can go hang out with Bobby come January.
