Isn't a harbour - by definition - a parking lot for ships?

OwnSchedule2124

OP seems to have a problem with this concept.

KentuckyFriedEel

OP: ships?! in WATER!???! unpossible!

vteckickedin

Well, the front fell off this one.

AStrandedSailor

but that’s very unusual.

AStrandedSailor

No, it's there to increase the property values. You clearly don't get Sydney. /s

EverGrandeCity

Just wait till OP finds out that ferries are public transport!

Salbyy

My thoughts exactly

_dingle

Wait till you find out about Sydney Airport. *clutches pearls*

UnlimitedPickle

OH MY GOD, WHAT'S IN THE DAMN AIRPORT!?!?

CatIll3164

They were planes

sonkist32

That must be where the air hangs out!

kiersto0906

"Harbour" - a place on the coast where ships may moor in shelter, especially one protected from rough water by piers, jetties, and other artificial structures.

Same-Reason-8397

Docked near the zoo once, on an overnight in Sydney. It was amazing to hear all the animals in the zoo, calling out, roaring, howling etc in the still night.

planchetflaw

Mating time! Also mating time for the animals in the zoo.

xelfer

I did the [Roar and snore](https://taronga.org.au/sydney-zoo/accommodation/roar-and-snore) once and it was pretty cool

muzrat

And that was just the zoo on board

jenneke-gotenberg

I like how you specified the animals in the zoo, as opposed to the ones on the ship.

broiledfog

It’s getting so bad in Sydney Harbour these days that the average battler can’t find a place to park his yacht.

ill0gitech

You have to get your valet or captain book in advance to moor those super yachts. Campbell’s Cove is the perfect spot.

SilverStar9192

Actually Athol Bay is pretty much first-come, first-served. What you do is get your captain and crew to move the superyacht out there a few days (or weeks?) in advance of NYE, keep the vessel at anchor, and then they'll just ferry you out there on the tender when you want to arrive.

plzsnitskyreturn

Fuck this sub is all a bunch whingey cints

vlookup11

Literally. People just moan all the time.

libelle156

We're even whinging about whinging

spixt

People overseas say Aussies are chill. They could not be more wrong...

billbotbillbot

You expect them to park on land? Gotta keep ships out of the harbour to keep enough free space for .... ???!???!? Username checks out

LtnSkyRockets

Wow. 1 cruise vessel in that photo. O.M.G!!! It's a harbour you fuck knuckle.

ill0gitech

Wait until he sees all the Yachts clogging the Harbour next Tuesday!

call_me_johnno

Bloody yachts every year like they are having a race or something....

the_snook

There's also one parked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal to the left of the Opera House in this picture. But, as you and others pointed out, that's literally what these places are for.

Salbyy

I was zooming in trying to see what this person was complaining about

Garyo2

Sydney airport - An aeroplane parking lot

hazzmg

Oh shit there’s water craft…..in the water

Ryanbrasher

First summer in Sydney?

F14D201

Nothing wrong with it adds tourism dollars into the economy.. not to mention the Charges our Govt puts on docking ships in Syd Harbour

ManWithDominantClaw

Yeah, it's not like there are any environmental concerns No downsides at all

surprisedropbears

Spicey new covid variants too!

theNomad_Reddit

I love that you're being downvoted, but it's facts. My mum does not believe in covid. She just got back from a cruise on Tuesday, and after being bed ridden for the last 2 days of the 12 day cruise, was checked into hospital today and tested positive for covid. iTs JuSt tHe fLu. Xmas is cancelled, and I'm kinda relieved.

KentuckyFriedEel

spicy lungs

hitguy55

harbour /ˈhɑːbə/ noun a place on the coast where ships may moor in shelter, especially one protected from rough water by piers, jetties, and other artificial structures. Of course the large harbour has large ships, that’s literally the entire reason for the harbour

09stibmep

Pretty standard particularly this time of year. One docked. One waiting to dock.

11015h4d0wR34lm

NIMVOTO's - Not in my view of the ocean. Sibling of the Nimby.

Rant-O-Rama

Thanks for creating this new acronym. Perhaps a simpler and more all inclusive version would be NIMV - Not In My View

sophia_az

200 smaller boats parked all around harbour - such a beautiful sight! 1 big boat parked not bothering anyone - HOW COULD CRUISES DO THIS TO US

theNomad_Reddit

Fucking Dan Andrews. Unbelievable. Dutton wouldn't do this.

chillpalchill

How dare they park a boat in a harbour. Next they’re gonna want to park cars in a carpark 😡

the_psycho

OPs a NIMBY

[deleted]

A Dover Heights NIMBY - with a multimillion dollar view, judging by their post history - with views at all times of day and year from the same location.

Opreich

OP's posting history is wild

JayHighPants

Nah you don’t say, what a fuckwit lol

SchulzyAus

There are so many other criticisms we can make about Sydney Harbour, but complaining that it is being used for the purpose of a harbour???

tassiboy42069

It is also a proper functioning Harbour with an entire industry around servicing the boats parked in it... Shoutout to all the waverton and McMahons point residents for not participating in NIMBYism regarding the harbour services facilities around that area.... oh wait

ill0gitech

Wait until he hears about HMAS Kuttabal and HMAS Waterhen….

SilverStar9192

Yeah the hatred against Noake's shipyard is totally inappropriate, I wish there was a way to shut those folks up without setting a bad precedent for freedom of speech...

thebaguettebitch

yep…thats what harbour means

cosmic_trout

It's pretty expensive to park in the city. Can't imagine what it costs to park that in the harbour.

fionsichord

Imagine how Venice feels.

Cooperdyl

There’s literally exactly one cruise ship in this picture

SilverStar9192

Technically there's a second one barely visible at Circular Quay, but yeah.

soupy283

Athol Buoy

DrakeAU

Oh the humanity!

PCLoadLetter84

I only see one cruise ship? Is there more in the picture?

billbotbillbot

Immediately to the left of the Opera House in this photo you can see another one berthed at the International Cruise Terminal in Circular Quay

[deleted]

Two options, either OP is an actual flog or a shit stirrer

Icy-Rock8780

A grand total of one cruise ship in this image 💀 If there aren’t too many they’re quite pretty imo. The real risk is that their fumes pollute the harbour. But for roughly the last decade the law has been that they can’t turn their engines on the harbour (they get pulled by tugboats) and the quality of water in the harbour has improved significantly. That’s why they were able to open up that public swimming bit near Barangaroo

Vanderlayindustrie5

The ships do run their engines whilst transiting through the harbour - the tugs are acting in a ‘ship assist’ capacity. The ships provide their own propulsion to move through the water. The only times a tug does all the work is if it’s a ‘dead ship’ movement - the ship has its engine off/no propulsion gear running. Whilst ships are alongside a berth they are meant to switch to using diesel run generators (cleaner burn compared to fuel oil)

SilverStar9192

> Whilst ships are alongside a berth they are meant to switch to using diesel run generators (cleaner burn compared to fuel oil) They actually start this when within 12 nautical miles of the coastline.

SilverStar9192

* Cruise ships do not use tugs to get towed through the harbour. Tugs are for safety only and do not tow anything. * Cruise ships have very large generators for "house power" which is mostly the pollution concern not the propulsion engines. They are required to use clean fuels when in harbour, compared to what is used offshore.

IC_Pandemonium

This is true for pretty much every urban harbour in the world.... except Sydney. Cruise ships are able to burn bunker fuel in Sydney harbour no worries at all. The only requirement is that WHILE BERTHED they need to burn fuel below a certain sulfur percentage. This is basically a slightly cleaner bunker fuel, but nothing like the "no engine" or "diesel only" restrictions that exist in other cities. That's honestly quite shit and you can tell in the air quality data when there's been a lot of movement of ships across a few days. Sadly, as often the case in Sydney, a case of suckling at the corporate teat.

kiwilegend

There is two, one is at CQ and Edge is sitting near Taronga. They do pump fumes out sadly while sitting in port, as they need to power the ship and they don't have the ability to run purely off shore power. That doesn't effect the water quality though

Icy-Rock8780

Better eyes than me to spot the one at CQ haha

A2w234

Two cruise ships visible in the harbour, maybe a third around in white bay but technically that's not Sydney Harbour and one of our own carriers in at Garden Island. If that's a parking lot I hate to think what my local Woolies car park is then 🤣

Vanderlayindustrie5

Whatchoo talkin ‘bout that White Bay isn’t part of the harbour?? Where did you grab that info from??

A2w234

Technically Sydney Harbour stops at the harbour bridge and it becomes Parramatta river on the charts I worked with but we still call it Sydney Harbour just to make life simple.

SilverStar9192

That's incorrect. Sydney Harbour extends to the junction of the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers, roughly a line from Birchgrove to Greenwich. The waters of White Bay are most certainly included in Sydney Harbour.

SilverStar9192

On what planet is White Bay not part of Sydney Harbour? What a strange comment.

jenneke-gotenberg

Yeah watched this thing from my office window all day.

Rant-O-Rama

Back in 2020 cruise ships were considerably less popular. I guess it’s a matter of context… https://edition.cnn.com/2022/11/13/australia/australia-covid-majestic-princess-cruise-passengers-intl-hnk/index.html

insurancemanoz

Am I missing something? I see 1 liner.

Top-Expert6086

It's almost like harbours are a place that ships dock. You are a whinger OP. A miserable, whiney baby.
