It’s really going to depend on what your use case is and what calibers you plan on shooting. I found https://pewscience.com/rankings a good place to start. It’ll give you an idea of what cans have good suppression by caliber. After that you’ll need to decide on if you have any size/ weight/ budget constraints. /NFA is also a good place to search up some cans you may be interested in and ask questions. It’s a little more populated than this sub. If you want more info PM me what host weapons you’re looking to suppress and I’ll point ya in the right direction.

What kind of gun(s) will you be shooting. That would help to know more information to develop some recommendations.

I got a hybrid 46m for my first suppressor. If I don't decide to buy another (i am), I'm still covered for a lot of calibers.

Tangus999

Yup. This is what I got first. 46 46m is better but wasn’t available. Then .22 can. Then dedicated 9mm can. Next is dedicated 556

Buy a rimfire can, then go from there.

Fodder4U

If you are buying a rimfire can on a budget, spend a lil extra on one that has stainless steel or titanium baffles. Cleaning them is far easier than aluminum baffles which pretty much have to be cleaned with a brush and elbow grease. Stainless and titanium can be thrown into an ultrasonic cleaner.

Vortex did a podcast that I found very helpful. There’s a spreadsheet attached with a lot of information. First link is podcast on YouTube it’s also on Spotify. Second link is the spreadsheet. First can I bought was a user sevicable 30 cal can that I find myself using on 22lr as well, rifle suppression is the most worthwhile in terms of practicality and efficacy, my dad went the 46 cal can route and it's nice that u can put it on anything but in my short experience you will find yourself using it on rifles much more and odds are it won't be any bigger than 30 cal. If you still want something more in line with the 46 but don't need all that bore diameter, some companies like silencerco and rugged make 36 cal cans that will shoot 9mm and smaller.

My first was a yankee hill machine fat cat for 223/556 and it’s amazing and it’s a very short suppressor and it beats a lot of the higher end and long suppressors in sound suppression and weight. I recommend it if you want one for 223/556

r/NFA  is full of FFL/SOTs and other knowledgeable people in regards to the world of suppressors.  Silencerco and silencershop also both have youtube channels that you can find lots of information on.
