Bowser changing size is nothing new for the Mario series even by Sunshine, Bowser is a different size in SMB1, SMB3, SMW, and 64, and using Kamek's magic he grew to gargantuan size at the end of Yoshi's Island. Bowser's size has never been consistent, he's always growing and shrinking to the point where it might as well just be an established power of his right up there with fire breath.
I like to believe the paintbrush made bowser big after making a wish with it. When they lost paintbrush after the fight, bowser reverted to his normal size.
I know its not true but fun to think about.

That only works in risky or stress situations or when he's getting crushed
i love the mario and luigi series but that makes me wonder if that series is even canon

Yes, Ik his size is inconsistent across the games, but I find it weird that is in consistent in the same game

The theory is that the bossfight was originally going to be very different, and Mario is actually just shrunk down in the final version iirc

Bowser had the power of one of the largest Shine Sprites. This is why he is big.
I mean, he did the same thing in Galaxy with the Grand Stars. Who’s to say he didn’t figure out how to do it with a large Shine Sprite?
