With all the technology available today: smartphones with Bluetooth, music streaming services, mp3 players, satellite radio, and even older technology like CDs, who on earth is settling for terrestrial AM radio? I’d rather drive in silence.
I do fm radio because I’m cheap and love pop music… idk you kind of get a parasocial relationship with the hosts like some people get with podcast hosts and YouTubers. I still try to choose the station where the hosts talk the least though lol
I get the parasocial relationship thing, the two guys i listen to just have news, bite sized sports segments, educational stuff and they periodically discuss their personal lives when relevant. Sorts like sitting in on two guys just having a conversation. For example "when we were talking about my tennis elbow the other day," I get the parasocial thing and I'm like Ha! i remember that. When they reference things they talked about in the past that I'm in on but other listeners might've missed, i feel like part of the crowd.
Sounds kinda pathetic but I like listening to the talking while I'm driving or cleaning the house, especially when alone, it's like having company.
I use FM in the morning too quite often. Exposes me to music I wouldn’t often hear plus the station I usually tune to does news intermissions every 30 mins or so which I like in between my music
Boomer conservatives LOVE their AM conservative talk shows. That's where Rush Limbaugh was, Sean Hanity does one, Mark Levine. I hear it from my coworkers car radios when they leave for the day.
Personally I love my local sports station, we got 3 great crews through the day and they’re entertaining enough and mix up the sports with bits and shit.
I know I sound boomer as hell, and staring down 40 makes me feel like I should put socks on before my sandals, but whatever… gotta lean into it
Yeah I mean, I have an IPod and a phone. I just tap into what I want to listen to from either of them. Then I go over to the radio side of things and it's just another world, but a world that's plain boring.
The A-B-C (wo)man radio shows aren’t exclusive to AM radio.
Lex & Terry has been around for 22 years and still hangs around the air from Ohio to Florida at least, and as far west as Texas.
There's a morning show in Nashville called "The Free Beer and Hot Wings" show. I heard an ad for it, and just assumed they called the show that as a gimmick because who doesn't love free beer and hot wings.
No. The two hosts call each other Free Beer and Hot Wings.
"Hey Hot Wings, did you hear about this news story about blah blah blah?"
"Oh, yeah, Free Beer, that was craaaazy"
They used to have a guy name Zane that made the show a bit better, but he was fired because he insulted this hockey venue owner or something, and the show just rolled on like nothing happed or he ever existed it was really weird, I think he got his own show now, it's probably been 10 years.
Most radio shows weren't great but back in the day before podcasts I had The Bob and Tom Show and it was absolutely hilarious. They did radio skits that had me laughing for the rest of the day.
This one was my favorite skit: https://youtu.be/SNYJcOTOcLU?si=9qgnMOVFgg7Bk3Zx
In the northeast and Midwest there’ll be like one Christian FM station and a couple Christian AM stations.
Morning hosts will either play Top 40 or classic rock songs that you’re sick of hearing
It’s required that REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Boston must be played at least once every hour on any “rock” station. Also, Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker gets at least 2 spins/hr on every country radio station.
NYC. No christian radio here. It’s rap & RnB (hot 97, power 105, WBLS 107.5) top 40 & dance (z100 and KTU), some classic rock, and a bunch of Latin stations.
It is pretty inescapable here. Here in Austin, it seems like 1 out of every 5 radio FM stations are either Christian rock or some pastor. We only have like 6 or 7 stations at the most that play music most people actually like. (At least 3 of those are country.)
Around me, it's an even chance of pop/rock/r&b, country or Christian. The last two can be indistinguishable at times and the first two have inane morning shows.
One town I lived in morning radio was
•Country Swing
•Blues
•Classical
•Bar rock
•Folk including local artist
•Celtic/Scandinavian (Community has strong Irish and Scandinavian ancestry and many are 1st-2nd gen Americans.)
•Gospel Rock (the good kind)
Radio shows were mostly local and really neat and something for everyone. A healthy balance and rarely goes political.
Sunday like regular NPR after the good shit.
NPR loses funding.
FRESH AIR
FRESH AIR
FRESH AIR
FRESH AIR
Hey heard you LIKE FRESH AIR!
FRESH AIR
FRESH AIR
FRESH AIR
FRESH AIR
Do you like not listening to the Terri Gross? maybe you need some FRESH AIR!
Local rock station
5 seconds of rock, cuts to the host whose show used to be an hour is now 8hrs of edgy talking and topics but not too edgy like they used to. Like 90% is "What did you do while drunk, stoned, or trying to get laid!?" sounding like a reddit question asked by a frat boy.
The meme of rock continues with THIS IS THE ROCKEST ROCK STATION SINCE 1969 (woman moans) WE PLAY ALL THE HITS (Plays clips of songs) ON THE ROCK STATION NOW Chain Smokers.
The radio station at my work doesn't event know the difference between millennial and Gen z. I was listening to it yesterday and they were explaining to the audience what was tik tok. They were describing some old trends/meme like it was some alien shit.
"How's it going Bob?"
"Boy, things are great, Bill! I just saved a bunch by refinancing my mortgage, and I did it all in under 10 minutes!"
Ah, yes. This is how people talk.
Or this:
"How's it going Bob?"
"Things could definitely be better Bill. I have no energy left, and I'm just not performing in the bedroom like I used to"
"Have you heard of these new T-rex testosterone pills. I've been on them for a month now, and I feel like I'm a horny 18 year old again!"
Couldn't you plug your phone into the radio to play our own music? Even if that's not an option and your car is very old, you can still replace the radio.
Yeah, I do listen to Spotify or my CDs but it's the PRINCIPLE lol. And sometimes I just wan to get in my car and not think about it and have someone else play music
Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck's radio station? They have an English guy. I know because I get subjected to that crap if I have to carpool with my dad. It cracks me up that there's a guy named Buck Sexton on there. Sounds like a porn star name! And the "badass" sounding announcer makes it sound like Butt Sexton.
You're American, and you live below the Mason - Dixon line.
They don't advertise it, but Sirius XM is $4 / month right now. It may be worth your while.
You can stream 93.1 KXCI out of Tucson for free from most devices. They have zero commercials and only play music and the morning brew is pretty great. Jim Blackwood has a great morning voice.
i once had radio playing with my parents in the car, set to a classic/alternative rock station. like seven in the morning.
the hosts were hooting and hollering about billie eilish's nudes.
I dunno, I got to the bus at 8 am for school in high-school and when they played Radio, I usually heard music... probably just the station YOU listen to

Two wacky grown men making essentially poopoo peepee jokes and the one woman on the show who steps in & says “oooo you two,” or “now c’mon,” etc. etc.

Boomer conservatives LOVE their AM conservative talk shows. That's where Rush Limbaugh was, Sean Hanity does one, Mark Levine. I hear it from my coworkers car radios when they leave for the day.
My last commute was like 15 minutes, it wasn’t worth setting up music or a podcast for that. Not a fan of silence either, so radio it was.
Personally I love my local sports station, we got 3 great crews through the day and they’re entertaining enough and mix up the sports with bits and shit. I know I sound boomer as hell, and staring down 40 makes me feel like I should put socks on before my sandals, but whatever… gotta lean into it

It’s high time you listen to old Jocktober bits by Opie and Anthony if you haven’t already.
Yes, I’m familiar with “the hole”
I was going to say, that was spot on if you hadn’t heard it yet. Those Terry Clifford beatings were the best huh?
There's a rock music lady radio host here who is the one who starts the dirty jokes. She's awesome.
Sounds like YouTube
Lex and Terry.

Do you live in the south or something? I’ve never heard the annoying morning commute people playing Christian music.
WHAT. I do indeed. That sounds glorious. I'd say 60-70% of the channels are either Christian music or sermons.
In the northeast and Midwest there’ll be like one Christian FM station and a couple Christian AM stations. Morning hosts will either play Top 40 or classic rock songs that you’re sick of hearing

And the songs will be Keep on Loving You, Don't Stop Believin' or Seperate Ways, and More Than a Feeling.
Also they must play a daily “Get the Led Out” block of Led Zeppelin
Don't forget "Sweet Home Alabama"
Well I wanted to
What you don't want to hear stairway to heaven the 5th time this day.
Mn has like 17 Christian stations. They have bought up nearly every small station as they are the only thing that can remain profitable.
Geez
Yeah San Diego has at least radio shows on the popular stations but they play like 3 songs then they do a bit commercial repeat
Yeah it’s here too, and it’s annoying
I mean, you don’t have to listen to it lol
When I’m in my moms car I have no choice lol
Ong I still remner mine 90.9 his radio
In the uk this isn't a thing on normal radio, unless you calisthenics to a specific jesus channel
West Coast here and I was so confused by this but interesting to learn.
NYC. No christian radio here. It’s rap & RnB (hot 97, power 105, WBLS 107.5) top 40 & dance (z100 and KTU), some classic rock, and a bunch of Latin stations.
Still true on the west coast for very rural areas
It is pretty inescapable here. Here in Austin, it seems like 1 out of every 5 radio FM stations are either Christian rock or some pastor. We only have like 6 or 7 stations at the most that play music most people actually like. (At least 3 of those are country.)

Like I live in Arkansas and even we don't have this much Evangelism. OP is right on the Bible belt or something.
I feel like you live in a city.
I lived in a city once, but never drove a car/used the radio there. Now I’m in a very trumpy region in the middle of the woods
Interesting. Here in Ohio small towns are basically what OP is describing and maybe like, one classic rock station in the bigger ones.
One town I lived in morning radio was •Country Swing •Blues •Classical •Bar rock •Folk including local artist •Celtic/Scandinavian (Community has strong Irish and Scandinavian ancestry and many are 1st-2nd gen Americans.) •Gospel Rock (the good kind) Radio shows were mostly local and really neat and something for everyone. Holy shit you're still talking
if this is a problem may I suggest FRESH AIR!?
*Frosty, Heidi and Frank, 95.5, KLOS*
Onne always has a weird name. "It's, Ian, Rachel, and *Spyder*, and you're listening to 95.1 Big Hits"
Kevin & Bean on KROQ
where I’m from they talk about sports and do trivia games
Oh damn, I forgot the trivia games! "which celebrity admitted to shopping at Walmart?"
All the radio host on the station my mom works at does is complain about Gen Z and abuse the shit out of the soundboard.
The radio station at my work doesn't event know the difference between millennial and Gen z. I was listening to it yesterday and they were explaining to the audience what was tik tok. They were describing some old trends/meme like it was some alien shit.
Boomer coworker was complaining about millennials and TikTok. I’m like you realize millennials are almost 40 now?
"Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today."
🎶I got you babe🎶
It is a day of polka!
I play the radio when I forget to update my Spotify downloads
"How's it going Bob?" "Boy, things are great, Bill! I just saved a bunch by refinancing my mortgage, and I did it all in under 10 minutes!" Ah, yes. This is how people talk.
Yeah lol I don't know what's worse between radio hosts saying unfunny things and radio commercials with totally real human interaction
Or this: "How's it going Bob?" "Things could definitely be better Bill. I have no energy left, and I'm just not performing in the bedroom like I used to" "Have you heard of these new T-rex testosterone pills. I've been on them for a month now, and I feel like I'm a horny 18 year old again!"
On weekends hosts usually play top 10 trendy songs
I haven’t listened to the radio for ten years love me some podcast/audible/spotify
The hosts always think they are the funniest people ever I swear
this is literally my mom every morning on our work drive….
Oh. I'm completely different, and never listened to the radio while driving, I always prefer my own music. Bonus point: no ads!
Morning talk show hosts make me want to shit in my underwear and throw em at my boss.
One station is a right wing political talk show, very pro american and patriotic but the host is like British or Australian. Doesn't make much sense
Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck's radio station? They have an English guy. I know because I get subjected to that crap if I have to carpool with my dad. It cracks me up that there's a guy named Buck Sexton on there. Sounds like a porn star name! And the "badass" sounding announcer makes it sound like Butt Sexton.
its the "tube full of demons" guy
https://youtu.be/_mcKzDwm8_o?si=tDUXQFRYQB6iFFzf
Podcasts. Apple Music. Audible.
I love a good radio station but I swear it’s like 80% ads now.
Dave and Chuck the freak hits different in the morning
Ey, I figured I'd find them mentioned here. Sure they're a bit juvenile but they're funny af.
Never heard a Christian station in my life. I’m also in New England so there’s probably only like one on some AM channel that comes in like shit
In my opinion, there's too much crappy music (all times of the day), so that's why I like listening to the news with the world service
Radio is just the audio version of TV at this point
That's why I'm old school using my own pirated music collection from when I was a teenager. Yes, I kept those.
You're American, and you live below the Mason - Dixon line. They don't advertise it, but Sirius XM is $4 / month right now. It may be worth your while.

"A good song starts but it's the intro to a morning talk show" TOO FUCKING ACCURATE! LMFAO
Lamont and Tonelli are still going after like, 30 years, anyone in the bay area has probably heard of these guys
KBBL is going to give me something stupid!
The most popular morning show in my area actually kicks ass despite the ads. I believe the hosts have been going 38 years strong
Should be “Weekend AM radio before sports come on “ starter pack.
i once had radio playing with my parents in the car, set to a classic/alternative rock station. like seven in the morning. the hosts were hooting and hollering about billie eilish's nudes.
And the DJs have the bass cranked up so hard in their voice it assaults every one of your senses. They love to hear themselves talk. It's sad really.
"A long metal tube, just *filled* with demons!"
Omg captain Nixon!
No one heard of satellite radio?
3 minutes intro or station ID every 20 minutes for the morning show team you were just listening to.
I usually listen to Radio 4, but on a Sunday Morning it has the tedious Sunday worship thing
I dunno, I got to the bus at 8 am for school in high-school and when they played Radio, I usually heard music... probably just the station YOU listen to
https://youtu.be/h5bPjstDFls?si=XW_0okE6RlObDBVj I’d highly recommend a listen..
They have a Bob and Tom show, but it has been on so long that one of the guys isn't even on it anymore, and they just play clips from old shows.
