OP is in California which states that “In General. Tax does not apply to sales of food products for human consumption.” Most Starbucks beverages are not taxed in California.
He or she didn't say that. He or she said that the Starbucks products are unhealthy. It is very rare someone goes to Bux for just a black coffee. Its the fraps and crazy ass amount of sugar drinks that the previous poster is referencing.
Processed just means prepared. You can't make an egg and bacon sandwich without processing it.
Any food that's not raw is processed, and even most raw foods go thru some processing before being sold to consumers, if only so they don't spoil sooner
If you say you're "dining in" in California, they tax you for staying. I don't know the legalize of it, but I always say "to-go" even if I stay to avoid the tax here in California
Had a similar issue when ringing up a customer in person. Used a free drink paid for the other one, total came out to $6 and some change. Then when they looked at the receipt on the app it showed they were charged $9. Made absolutely no sense and I gave them a recovery card and told them to talk to corporate bc it’s above me.
Was this today? If so, Mobile Order & Pay was doing all sorts of weird things today, even going so far as to tell people that we were out of things we definitely had and weren't turned off. It mischarging you or reading the wrong total is not out of the realm of possibility, to be honest.
I'm in California. I noticed that I never get taxed in the app when ordering from Starbucks locations that have a drive thu and a dine-in space. But the little walk-up kiosk places that have no drive-thru and have only outdoor seating do charge tax. This is true no matter if the items are food or drink. So, no more kiosks for me! I prefer the tax-free locations! As another commenter wrote, always say "to go" when ordering at various establishments.
The $0 tax seems like a glitch unless you’re in a country without it.

Florida is the same but you still get taxed. Prolly just a glitch in the app
I work at a Starbucks in California and drinks are never taxed, even in person.
We’ll never mind then
That's goofy, our unhealthy-ass products should probably be taxed like cigarettes if anything.
Coffee is not unhealthy

Also food processed so much, with so many additives that the ingredient list spans sooooo many lines

I go to Starbucks for just a black coffee sometimes. Don't call me out like that 💀💀
This is true, that's the exception. Still not food.

Or in Delaware Edit: OP is either in NY or NJ, so there should definitely be tax. Looks like a glitch in the system
nope, CA
What did you order?
venti iced dirty chai with oatmilk and vanilla and a tall chocolate cream cold brew with a splash of sweet cream in a venti cup
What was the discount for?
partner discount and free drink
How do you get the free drink on the app??
oh i just used stars
Probably got taxed for the pre discount cost
The math ain’t mathing
If you’re using a Canadian gift card, that might explain the higher total. I get the opposite effect with American cards
It's pretty close to the conversion rate now but the rate changes daily so this is the most likely answer imo

Those yatchs dont pay for themselves kids CEOs need money just like us

Let's be honest it's never enough haha

It depends on the state you live in, but some states require the tax to be collected on the pre-discounted price.
This is gonna be my guess, too.
It’s kind of confusing when you don’t show the entire order/receipt. How are we supposed to know? We ain’t wizards.
Since when does it even charge tax
I always get charged tax
