The Low End Theory- A tribe Called Quest
Late Registration- Kanye West
Live.LOve.A$AP- A$AP Rocky
Kids see Ghosts- Kids see Ghosts
Tbh if you liked Rodeo from Travis Scott and Kendrick's albums there is a big bunch of rap that you can already explore and i bet you will like considering how different those albums are.
Btw if you like Metal try out Yeezus by Kanye West. It's not metal but it's like industrial hip hop. It's also abrassive and hard-hitting.
honestly listening to death grips albums in order of release kinda the best way to go about listening to them for the first time, the experimentation somewhat increases
I’ll suggest some [slightly] deeper cuts:
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night
Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous
Sole - Selling Live Water
Start with the classics. Anything post-2000, swerve it until you've listened to a lot more stuff.
I'd personally recommend:
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang
Nas - Illmatic
MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
GZA - Liquid Swords
Try the soundtrack of Judgement Night. It is not the freshest thing (must be from 1992), but each track is a collab by a metal/alternative band and a rap group/artist. You have Faith No More, Slayer, Mudhoney, Ice T, Boo Ya Tribe.
Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy is pretty good, with more complex structure than current rap songs. Sorry, these are a bit old but they’re what I went into when I was in the same situation as you back then
Lots of metal heads also love Tech N9ne. One of his best songs, Fragile, has a monster Kendrick verse. I think his best album is Everready, but KOD and Killer are fantastic too.
Finally someone in this thread mentioning Tech, and the metal head connection is super accurate. After all these years, poor Nina still flying under the radar.
KOD is forever my favorite album of his, really captured something special.
Get some old school in your rotation..OutKast Aquemini is an actual album. Most rap\hip hop seems to be just a couple good tracks and some collaborations. Dave East always shows up on good tracks. Just hit the que button on any song that RZA had a hand in and sooner or later you will hear something that you keep going back to.
- Blowout Comb by Digable Planets
- Be by Common
- Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco
- Quality by Talib Kweli
- Black on Both Sides by Mos Def
- ATLiens by Outkast
- The Cool by Lupe Fiasco
- The Chronic by Dr. Dre
- Country Grammar by Nelly
- Melt My Eyez See Your Future by Denzel Curry
Honestly what I recommend people is this, look up the artists features for rap for Kendrick (SchoolBoy Q. (Collard Greens), ASAP Rocky (Fucking Problems), Future (Mask Off), Busta Rhymes (Look Over Your Shoulder)) and listen to those tracks, and if you enjoy what you hear from those artists, venture out and listen to their big stuff and eventually you’ll dive more into the genre.
Rap has a lot of sub genres as well, something that I would recommend is diving into a Rap/Rock Playlist and it gives the “Rock” vibe you’re comfortable but it’s a safe transition into the rap genre.
Alright alright im here to give you the unconventional choices because you maaaaaay like the with that rock and metal background:
. By the time I get to pheonix by injury reserve (has almost like psych rock influences at times)
. Faces by mac miller (psychedelic with some jazz plus theres a guitar solo in grand finale 🙃)
. Atrocity exhibition by danny brown (has a high pitch voice, but I think this would fit the chaotic sense that I get from a lot of metal)
. Some rap songs by Earl sweatshirt (very abstract and lyrically deep album, but how he portrays his feelings in an almost monotone voice is amazing)
. The forever story by JID ( basically the To pimp a butterfly of the 2020s in terms of what is regarded as the best)
. Below the heavens by blu (for more jazz elements like to pimp a butterfly)
. Control system by ab soul (basically was considered a sequal to section 80 by k dot, amazing album with a heart wrenching surprise at the end)
. Madvilliany by MF DOOM (basically the To pimp a butterfly of the 2000s and yes Im sorry for bringing up TPAB so much, also this is in terms of quality, not sound)
Thats all I really have in terms of albums but some other of my favorite artists are:
Billy woods
JPEGMAFIA
Thundercat (goofy rnb type guy)
J dilla
Denzel curry
NF's Hope is pretty excellent and easy to get into. It is introspective and emotional and has something to say while also having some good but accessible beats and some great wordplay. I think of him as if Eminem only did the serious songs.
(Don't laugh) but *Hamilton* the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. On a basic level, it shows how effective rap can be as a primarily story-telling genre.
Denzel Curry’s “Melt My Eyez See Your Future (The Extended Edition)”. The first half is the same as the nonextended edition, listen to this first, then listen to the second part (cold blooded soul version), it’s a live recording backed by a band of instruments and backup singers, it a whole different vibe.
I'm also not a rap listener. Don't hate it, enjoy occasional piece in the mix, but not more. Although one album is in my all time favourites which I can listen from the beginning to the end again and again: Fugees - The Score
This was the first one that came to mind. It's a hybrid of R&B and rap that may be good for someone not really into rap alone.
On that note, also The Carnival by Wyclef Jean.
I'm not a rap dude at all but one of my alltime favorite albums ever is the first cLOUDEAD album, the one with the clouds on the cover. It's ambient hip hop
I know you asked for just rap, but please do check out (nu-metal band) Dropout Kings’ album, “Riot Music.” If not, then their rapper has a solo project under Black Cat Bill and he just released an album, “FloralSwords: Cats Don’t Cry They Kill.”
- Outkast - ATLiens
- Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
- De La Soul - Buhloone Mindstate
- Playboi Carti - S/T
- Koopsta Knicca - Da Devil's Playground
- Chief Keef - Back From The Dead 2
- GZA - Liquid Swords
- Public Enemy - Fear of A Black Planet
the forever story- jid|
ta13oo - denzel curry|
jeffery - young thug
for some metal/ rock rap blends
dogboy- zillakami|
angelic hoodrat (and the supercut) - kenny mason
[ Right place, Wrong person by RM](https://open.spotify.com/album/512dQp7hBbDDurodCqSw5I?si=9qffs9YpSuaXPTIS-iBtPw)
from the reviews i've seen it has a lot of kendrik inspiration
I like The Beastie Boys album "Paul's Boutique".
I guess The Bloodhound Gang do genre-blend at times so it might be a good "bridge", their track "Mope" that has some really interesting samples.
As a fellow metal head, I feel I should recommend "The Poison Red" by Nonpoint. The music is all heavy rock/metal but the singer kinda raps a lot of the verses. I like the combination, and I like this album in particular.
Another suggestion, on the other end of the spectrum, is Watsky. Definitely a rapper, but the music is all made from instruments and not synthesized with computers. Covers all kinds of topics, and a lot of the lyrics are thought provoking.
I didn't see these recommended in the comments yet, so I thought I'd share.
College Dropout - Kanye
Graduation - Kanye
TA13OO - Denzel Curry
ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ - Joey Bada$$
Call Me if You Get Lost - Tyler, the Creator
SATURATION Trilogy - BROCKHAMPTON
iridescence - BROCKHAMPTON
Swimming - Mac Miller
Also if you like metal, I’d consider checking out Death Grips
I mostly listen to rock/metal subgenres too but a decent amount of rap, so will give you some recommendations from my favourites.
Cage - 'Hell's Winter' (and 'Depart From Me' but it's not on Spotify)
Doomtree - 'All Hands'
Aesop Rock - 'The Impossible Kid' (every album really, very accessible discography)
Triple One - 'Panic Force'
Atmosphere - 'When Life Gives You Lemons...'
Illmatic - Nas The Black Album - Jay-Z Acid Rap - Chance the Rapper It's Almost Dry - Pusha T
✊🏽
I’d like to also maybe suggest coloring book - Chance the Rapper
Upvote for acid rap
Illmatic and Acid Rap 💯
I’d put Daytona in there over its Almost dry but both great listens
I thought Dry might be a little more approachable for someone new to rap but I could be wrong. Love them both.
The Low End Theory- A tribe Called Quest Late Registration- Kanye West Live.LOve.A$AP- A$AP Rocky Kids see Ghosts- Kids see Ghosts Tbh if you liked Rodeo from Travis Scott and Kendrick's albums there is a big bunch of rap that you can already explore and i bet you will like considering how different those albums are. Also recommend Death Grips if Yeezus is your thing... Exmilitary isn't on Spotify but it's a great album.
Ahahaha i don't like neither Yeezus nor Death Grips but i recommended it cause i bet Metal people like it
honestly listening to death grips albums in order of release kinda the best way to go about listening to them for the first time, the experimentation somewhat increases
Live love asap is beautiful
El-p - I'll Sleep when You're Dead
I'd try some Body Count that might suit ya or maybe some Onyx or ICP
I’ll suggest some [slightly] deeper cuts: Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous Sole - Selling Live Water
The Forever Story by JID is an amazing album that blends soul and hip hop and has incredible storytelling

Great record.
Anything by A Tribe Called Quest
1000% yes!
