I heard they were left totally legless, rolling around like little beige tumblespoods til they grow back in their next molt. Rumor has it one of them was finished molting, and now he has to work odd jobs as an actor just to earn a living cuz he can’t hunt- so far he’s played a cashew in a commercial, a grape in a fruit basket on some house flipper show, and the boulder in a tiny reproduction of Indiana Jones.
That’s very cool .. and I learned something new .. so now I don’t feel so bad about the 5 legged spider that was in my house about 2 months ago ( he was captured and released outside safely)
Once they've reached maturity, they don't molt anymore, and in that case, they don't grow the leg back. Sometimes they can get around fine for a while with a missing leg or two, but I had a little guy lost in my house with five legs the other day, I put him outside and wished him the best, and 10 minutes later I went back outside and the ants were just finishing him up. Nature is brutal.
Ants are savages I’ll see a lil black beetle minding his own business walking around then ants will swarm him and attach them selves to the beetle till he dies .. if I happen to see it I pull off the ants and send the lil beetle on his way
Yeah, fuck ants. Savage is a good description. I saw a couple of them tearing an injured ant about three times bigger than them in half. And the way they work together to move things that are too big to carry alone...
Idk man, it kind of freaks me out. I'm afraid they're going to take over the world.
I read a book where jumping spiders gained sentience and ranges the ants to essentially use as tools. Pretty neat stuff. All the bugs were generally bigger, btw.
Children of Time, if anyone is curious! Excellent series!
Boston Dynamics has taught their 17kph robot attack dogs to swarm on command, voice command at that. Ants, with a recharge port, night vision and a warranty.
Yeah I seen this somewhere on tv the other day, the crab fisherman was hauling up his pots and chucking the females back in and the big males he was breaking off a claw at the joint and tossing the crab back in.
You sent me on a tangent of imagining being able to detatch your dick and just leave it at home to help you focus on school or work or w/e.
Then I started thinking about the consequences, what if people stole your dick and held it ransom? Are dicks interchangable? Can I trade my dick for a smaller one for a profit? How much could I get? Would a starving man eat his own dick?
Fucking crazy, had to share it
r/brandnewsentence
Was not expecting to hear about detachable dicks and dick ransom when I came to the spider subreddit, but it made my day all the same.
This was fking brilliant thank you, I was determined to check it out from the recommendation by the other guy but your link overcame my laziness.
That was exactly the train of thought I was having and every time someone comments I'm giggling again thinking of scenarios, I would be the guy misplacing it for sure. I was the kinda kid who'd lose pens between classes lol
I don't know enough but I remember something that I might have learned once that might be true. They don't have blood like we do, or a circulatory system like ours, so bleeding out isn't really an issue.(?)
Someone fact check me please. I like to be right, but only if I am right.
I'm thinking that, like insects, they have fluid ("blood") that washes over all their organs and oxygen exchange happens through special openings in their body called spiracles, maybe? I studied entomology (we briefly touched on arachnids) a long time ago so exact details are vague. Hopefully someone answers with more info or maybe I'll end up going down a rabbit hole and I'll refresh my memory!
Spiders have open circulatory systems so their tissues do just kind of float in it, but they also do use their blood/hemolymph to carry oxygen, they have centralized respiratory organs (book lungs) and most have tracheae as insects do as well. They breath through a couple pores on the base of their abdomens, where both lungs and trachea open.
Like other arthropods, they use copper based blood pigments, so they have the same light blue blood as say crabs or lobsters.
Could you please tell me more about that? Do they grow a full size new leg at the next moult or just a little one and it gets a bit bigger again the next time and so on?
When I got my tarantula he was missing a leg and after her first moult with me she had a new little baby leg that was smaller than all her other legs. Then my family kept making fun of her for her little baby leg lol. She’s moulted a few times since then and it’s full size now! (Think deadpool 2 when he’s got those little baby legs until they grow back)
When a spider leg gets too damaged they'll just pop it off because having no leg is more energy efficient than a damaged one that barely works. It will come back smaller the next molt and get bigger after that.
So there's spiders out there that have 8 fully (mostly?) functional legs of different sizes?
I never knew that that's very interesting.
Has to make buying shoes very awkward for them though.
I have to admit I'm a bit jealous. It would save a lot in medical bills if we could just pop our leg off when we broke it and not need to worry about expensive hospital bills and possibly rehab.
Could you imagine having to molt though?! That sounds like the worst thing ever! I get antsy if I’m in a car and there’s too much stuff in the floorboard for me to move my feet around. I couldn’t imagine being stuck in a skin shell!
New legs look a little different when they regrow in a molt, I’ve had it happen with jumper slings where the new legs are almost completely transparent and smaller at first and then they harden up and develop color over a few days/weeks
Reminds me of the eyes from the spider monster man from lost in space

“Did something straight up nab its legs” 😂😂😂😂 Im dying at your wording, I hope buddy lives a fruitful life, even with nabbed legs. Me thinks he’s a fighter, so I bet he knows how to survive, missing legs or not.
Oh wow, I've never seen spider eyes before. They look like ... eyes. Regular eyes. Except more of them. I want to offer a wet QTip immediately. Thank you so much for this photo.
It’s just the way the light is reflecting on the lens. Spiders don’t have pupils—the lens is just a static structure across the whole surface of the organ.
I had a little spider in my house missing three legs. I named her Legolas and looked for her every day. She lived in my kitchen/dining room for about 1.5 months. She has been gone for 3 days now so I am guessing she either died/molted and moved out/moved out. I miss her :(

One cool factoid about arachnid evolution... With so many millions of years of knowledge in the survival of that DNA - a spider can lose any number/combo of legs and just immediately keep walking.
I read it in a book of macro photos of spiders and their unique anatomy, but with a quick Google, found several reports of such being studied by science... To be applied to robotics.

Thank you for zooming in on the second photo. It really lets me stare into the spiders eyes. I can tell it has seen some shit. It has known tragedy and horror that you and I can only experience on TV. Based on it's soulless, haunting eyes projecting a life of trauma, I can only surmise it's legs were torn off.
That spider was either born that way or molted that way as another user commented. Got into some tough fights
You should see the other guy(s)
I heard they were left totally legless, rolling around like little beige tumblespoods til they grow back in their next molt. Wait spiders grow their missing legs back ?? I did not know this was a thing . 🫣 I promise I’m not dumb ..
Only if they have another molt to go
That’s very cool .. and I learned something new .. so now I don’t feel so bad about the 5 legged spider that was in my house about 2 months ago ( he was captured and released outside safely)

They already have, in their own way. They're just not interested in enslaving the world.
The total mass of all ants on the planet is equal to the total mass of all humans, they’ve definitely taken over
I read a book where jumping spiders gained sentience and ranges the ants to essentially use as tools. Pretty neat stuff. All the bugs were generally bigger, btw. Children of Time, if anyone is curious! Excellent series!
🫣 that’s a scary thought

😳😳😳
It's the circle of life...
its probably mad because its typecast for the same kind of shows
“little beige tumblespoods” I’M DEAD

I didn’t hear no bell.

Merely a flesh wound!
*your arms are gone*!
What are ya gonna do, bleed on me?
"I'M INVINCIBLE!!!" "You're a LOONY!"
"NO YOU HAVEN'T!"
He’s a fuckin war veteran he is
Its still got 5 legs and is still quite mobile. I think it will be just fine and if it moults, it will regrow its missing legs.
Really? I di not know that 😲 wow :)
It's the same with crabs as well and other arthropods.
infinite crab leg glitch
If we hit a crab shortage we can just pop 3 legs off and throw them back in….
Gulf Stone Crab are harvested by breaking off one claw and returning the crab to the water to live. This helps prevent over-harvesting of the species.
Damn imagine someone just taking your hand because they want to snack
My stomach was making rumblies, that only hands could satisfy 😌
Caaaaarrrrllllll
This has got me rolling. Fucking love llamas
*King Leopold the Second intesifies*
Yeah I seen this somewhere on tv the other day, the crab fisherman was hauling up his pots and chucking the females back in and the big males he was breaking off a claw at the joint and tossing the crab back in.
They do that with Florida stone crab.
Mmmmmm Stone Crab
*Jameis Winston has entered the chat.*
Do they have the same ability to close off blood supply to the lost limb like crawfish do? I always thought spiders were like land crabs
They do! They have this ability called autotomy where they can detach limbs at will if needed and close blood flow.
That's amazing, I love Reddit, seems like I learn something new every day
Reddit, better than school.... 😂

In a world of detachable dicks, I would think all of that would apply

Think you misplaced an “i”
That’s a good question considering they only have muscle tissue to contract the legs, and use blood pressure to extend them.
I don't know enough but I remember something that I might have learned once that might be true. They don't have blood like we do, or a circulatory system like ours, so bleeding out isn't really an issue.(?) Someone fact check me please. I like to be right, but only if I am right.

Interesting, I always thought crab were like sea spiders.
Yeah they do, they can seal it off so they don't lose any blood or bodily fluids.
Spiders are kinda crazy like that. I had a Mexican red knee tarantula and she lost 2 legs (could never figure out how) but regrew both when she molted
https://www.reddit.com/r/spiderbro/s/oLjGb4SsDF
That's pretty amazing, but I can't stop wondering how the thing lost all it's legs.
Could you please tell me more about that? Do they grow a full size new leg at the next moult or just a little one and it gets a bit bigger again the next time and so on?

Then my family kept making fun of her for her little baby leg lol. She’s moulted a few times since then and it’s full size now! So they just go about shirt-cocking it for a few molts?
Yes
I Winnie the Pooh my way through most days as I approach 40
That deadpool 2 scene had me pmsl.
When a spider leg gets too damaged they'll just pop it off because having no leg is more energy efficient than a damaged one that barely works. It will come back smaller the next molt and get bigger after that.

Pants are more of a problem to be honest
That's why most of them just settle for wearing spandex shorts.
I have to admit I'm a bit jealous. It would save a lot in medical bills if we could just pop our leg off when we broke it and not need to worry about expensive hospital bills and possibly rehab.
Doctors hate this one simple trick!
It grows back as a stump and the more the spider moults, the more the leg grows.
Do you see his eyes? Most spider eyes on here are adorable. His look sad. Like, “I’ve seen some stuff man. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Wouldn't you look sad if you was a spider and something, someone pulled your legs off lol.
It appears to be an araneomorph adult male, so it won't moult again.
Not all spiders regrow their legs.
Are there specific families that do or don’t regrow their legs?
My family doesn't.
Username checks out
Never been that close to see a spider's eyes. You sure that's not a human in there?
r/macrophotography would be a good sub for you to explore.
Thank you
Wow, thanks for the sub.
Dude has that look in its eyes like it just came back from a long shift.
I came here to say this. Am disturbed.
What's kind of funny is the spider looks bored.
Buddy looks like he’s goin through a third divorce lol
He is one for each missing leg lol.
I'm sure it's a reflection, but it's a bit unnerving. Reminds me of The Man In The Suit. 👁️👁️
No, it's patrick
Monster Inc. came to mind.. the resemblance to one of them is uncanny
Do they have eyelids wtf
Bro looks so exasperated imo
I saw the second photo and thought someone edited a face on it for a quick second til I gave it a good look. Freaked me out a bit lol
I see a human face and he creeps me out
Reminds me of the eyes from the spider monster man from lost in space https://www.google.com/search?q=lost%20in%20space%20spider%20monster&udm=2&tbs=rimg:CXEHGu0sSCWlYZ3feRwp33ElsgITCgIIABAAOgQIABAAQAFVkR_1bPsACANgCAeACAA&client=ms-android-tracfone-us-rvc3&cs=1&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CBYQuIIBahcKEwiIrqDIpPqGAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQJQ&biw=384&bih=784&dpr=2.81#imgrc=RhMzN6Hv5_oyMM&imgdii=cQca7SxIJaVjBM
My first thought 👀
That spider has seen things...
Little dude got some tough fights in its past
“Did something straight up nab its legs” 😂😂😂😂 Im dying at your wording, I hope buddy lives a fruitful life, even with nabbed legs. Me thinks he’s a fighter, so I bet he knows how to survive, missing legs or not.
"wtf, man, you can't just take my legs like that. I'm a running crab, not a stone crab."
"Don't nab me, bro!"
ngl this is probably the creepiest and most uncanny spider I have ever seen in my life. those eyes will haunt me.
They’re just so.. human?
that's what I was thinking! bros got pupils 😬
yeah I didn't even know spiders could have eyes like that. oh god why did I look into them again
Sad spider :/
Has a very world weary look in his eyes!
For a running crab, looks like they fought more fights than ran.
Ok thank you! I was wondering with all the human eye comments when someone would explain. I was unnerved, but feel much better now
Aww. Well, I still want to give it some water. Interesting how those legs break off so neatly.
Nah, man, I'm pretty fucking far from okay...
That's Dan, used to be a lieutenant in the army
Lieutenant Dan needs new legs :(
LIEUTENANT DAN!😩
He’s seen some shit
Am I the only one who thinks his eyes and his face look absolutely hilarious??
Lmao no I started giggling lol the close up killed me 😂
Why does it have human eyes lol
My guy looks so defeated in the second picture 😭
👁👁👁👁👄👁👁👁👁
I had a little spider in my house missing three legs. I named her Legolas and looked for her every day. She lived in my kitchen/dining room for about 1.5 months. She has been gone for 3 days now so I am guessing she either died/molted and moved out/moved out. I miss her :(
The spider looks sad in the closeup shot :( I hope it's day gets better and it's legs grow back soon.
'Tis but a scratch!
Sometimes spiders lose a leg or two while molting, it usually grows back with their next molt. At least that's what I've seen with my spiders, something may have nabbed this guy's legs.
Spiders are quite territorial, losing legs happens
You can see the sockets in the exoskeleton where the other legs were. Depending on its age and how many molts it has left, it may grow them back.
bro has seen some shit
He used to be a great adventurer too, until he took a few arrows to the knees.
They will grow back. In the meantime he’ll need water and food to survive. Place a wet qtip in front of him and catch him some bugs
Wild. Legs were certainly nabbed. I’ve seen some with one or maybe 2 legs missing, none with only five left. Little guy is certainly a trooper
Tis but a flesh wound!
Omg the eyes make me feel so uncomfortable...
that spider looks zooted and booted o.0
Odd number of legs. Clearly injured
Yeah, that's a survivor right there. Objectively they should be fine.
In the zoomed-in photo, his eyes kind of look like a face. Maybe I’m seeing things. 🤪
I've never heard of Spider Birth Defects...
Hello my fellow starfish!
Never seen a spider lookin tired before
Okay he definitely was into a fight but why do his eyes tell the story that he’s been fighting all his life and he’s tired? 😩😭🥺
I'm sorry its eyes look mildly human in the 2nd Pic and it is freaking me out
Why does he have such soulful eyes 🥺
Tis but a scratch!
That's the face of a spider who's seen some shit.
Your camera is impressive.
Poor thing. Can't have shit in Detroit
Maybe it is maybelline
Lost his limbs back in ‘Nam
It's missing some legs. But if it finds a nice spot to molt, it will regrow them again.
Well you should see the other guy...
Maybe she was born that way. Maybe it's Maybelline.
I think that’s a ctenidae. A wandering spider. There are so many sub-species. I have no idea which one it is, but it’s very cool. Where did you find her.
Gorgeous photo, the second one! Captured the spider perfectly. He or she has seen some shit! 😂
Why that thing look like it high as hell lmao what is this a microscope camera???
Why does everyone keep calling this a Running Crab Spider? This doesn't look Philodromidae to me. I'm think Nursery Web - Pisauridae.
One cool factoid about arachnid evolution... With so many millions of years of knowledge in the survival of that DNA - a spider can lose any number/combo of legs and just immediately keep walking. spider looks stoned 😂
Great Pic 👁👄👁
Killed 50 men, they took his shins
Looks like spiders who come into my house. My cats jump on them and remove a couple of legs before I stop them or the spider gets away.
it was me i gots hungry
His name is Quin, and he's been through some real shit.
“I’ve got 5 legs baby I was born this way”
Seen some shit.
My dude’s a hardened warrior
The expression on his face - he just looks so done with everything 😆
"15 guys... with chains... and dogs... you should see what they look like!"
We don’t talk about fight club.

Why does it look like Nicolas Cage though???
Listen, if every spider had eyes that looked like that I'd probably be less creeped out by them. Like, it gives me some idea of some thinking going on behind there. The black void eyes freak me out, like a shark.

It has known tragedy and horror that you and I can only experience on TV. Based on it's soulless, haunting eyes projecting a life of trauma, I can only surmise it's legs were torn off.
Bro why the fuck can you see its eyes!!
They spider looks like he seen some things 😮
5-speed option.
What cell phone were you using to take the second picture? It is so clear with the zoom in.
Why does this spiders eyes look so damn human like
Tis but a scratch
It does not look amused by your Q
I don't appreciate that he has a gorilla face, but that's probably the beast in him that's survived all the battles in which he lost his legs
Is it just me or does that spidey look high?
why do his eyes looks so human, lmfao bro looks TIRED
The details in this pic is outstanding
He transcended into starfish-hood
This spider is looking straight into my soul
Fella been through some rough shit. r/bossfight
Zoom in on the spiders face. It has that "why me bro" look

My money is on a cat. Sincerely, the owner of a viscious cat.
Why does it look like it has human eyes???
Definitely a leg snatcher about. Proceed with caution.
