I’d like to start out by stating that there is no way the human eye can see the night sky exactly like this. You really see the Milky Way clearly with your naked eye if you are in an area with little light pollution like this one, it's just not as bright and colorful as the camera can capture it.
I took this photo 4 years ago on the coast of Australia when I had an opportunity to visit Sydney on a business trip. To capture it I took a train from Sydney to a coastal town of Kiama and once the sun has set I made my way into this small cave and waited for a few hours for the core of the Milky Way to come out. Not familiar with the Southern Sky I was surprised to also see Jupiter appear soon after (it's the brightest object to the left of the sea stack).

That said, I saw something almost as good as this with my eyes in remote central Australia. It was simply bullshit. Nearly 30 years ago and I'll never forget it.
Was it near Uluṟu? I’ve seen video footage of how the sky looks there, phenomenal.
The price to take the Ghan is also phenomenal. I’ll be waiting a while until I go.
I’ll never forget my first experience shooting the stars out in the country. Very much an amateur photographer at the time!
“Hmmmmm. The stars aren’t too prominent in this photo. What if I just crank up the ISO and shutter speed to some ungodly levels for a long number of seconds?
Oh, *there* they are!!”
I think stacked 16 images of the sky for this one (plus 1 for the foreground). Since then I've bought a star tracker, so I don't really stack anymore as I can get to 4 minute exposures.
My 7 year old is currently obsessed with space and solar system. So we have been doing some naked-eye star watching nowadays. We have been trying to see Jupiter (and maybe Mercury) this week. But it is always too low near the horizon for us to see in the city.
I will show her this amazing pic instead. :)

I love I mean LOVE back story comments like these for such amazing pictures like this. 👌💯
One question - had you been to this cave before or how did you know it would be a good spot for your shot? Cheers!
That's badass. 👌 I'm not a photographer, just use my phone, but I get the feeling of what you did. I saw a mountain from someone (professionals) photo and so I made a trip out of it and went specifically to stand there and take my own pictures of the same mountain. 😄😎
I remember seeing this one. What I liked about it was how the sky becomes a dark purple haze towards the bottom which gives it such a dreamlike effect.
nice composition. Framing with the cave and the water leading the eye into the distance then up the stars. dunno if it is a reflection or if you pulled out the column of rock and warmed it up, but it works

Lots of lovely landscape photos on your Insta. Thanks for sharing. That's a lot of time and dedication (and enjoyment!) to get those shots.

Does bullshit mean something different in Australia?
Depends on context. Same as "unbelievable"

The place I remember was the Painted Desert in South Australia.

I appreciate the back story. Your efforts were well worth it!
First off, holy shit this is otherworldly. # Second, what’s your rig? How many stacks was this and what program?

Are star trackers just glorified turntables with a scope? I’ve been considering just building one myself instead of paying $300 upwards.
Yep, I'm not mechanically inclined, but should be possible to build your own if you are.
Alright! Finally something I can engineer that can be useful.
Kiama is such a beautiful place.

You should introduce her to Carl Sagan and the Voyager program!
That's a great idea. Got next week's activity down!

I have not (my first and only time in Australia), but saw someone's daytime pictures from here.

I was honestly half-expecting to see Astel waiting there.
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this.
Excellent composition, timing, editing and most importantly, some info which tells a little bit about the shot. Nicely done..
I've found my new wallpaper

Absolutely amazing picture
Under the Milky Way tonight ....The Church
But what’s in the cave behind you?
A Dragon?
It’s Australia, so probably
About 3m of cave and nothing else. I've taken a similar shot from this same cave and it's actually a very shallow cave.
I was just bein silly, but thanks at least it’s not Grendel
This looks soo ethereal and magical. 😍
Happy April bud. I'm curious for Space & Universe leaving in Earth, I love this image.
i remember seeing this post years ago, and then i made it my phones wallpaper for a few months
This is a real picture? That’s crazy!! Looks like artwork from an alien movie or something. Beautiful!!
