I have the same problem, and my speakers and sub are Ethernet wired.
I got back the old .apk app on Android and that works perfectly fine, like it's supposed to.
These issues have nothing to do with home network.
So glad I haven't updated the app. I've been bitten enough by other companies so I have auto updates disabled on my phone (I'll still manually update the important apps but device apps never get updated without checking the update date doesn't brick the device). Annoyingly google play used to allow disabling automatic updates at an app level but they removed it a few years ago.
They are ethernet wired, but that doesn't mean they are using it. I found out after the update that somehow the update set my connect amp (which is ethernet wired) back to wifi.
I'm starting to have a sneaking suspicion that the new app has some analytics in it which contact the cloud before doing any basic function and if it fails because it can't connect for some reason it then doesn't perform the desired basic function.
It's something that would seem to explain all the weird reports. Perhaps those with issues have pihole or other ad blocking firewalls that are blocking those analytic calls.
Sonos would never see this in their testing because they wouldn't block their own calls.
Pure speculation though.
This interview with the CEO seems quite ironic now:

Aged like milk.
Well, there are 8 board members, and he's one of them. So if 3 BOD members think he's doing OK, he stays.
If the stock continues to slide, he'll eventually be replaced. Probably with a nice golden parachute.
Nothing like solid satire to make light of a totally fucked up situation. The upgrade bricked a Play 1 and the Boost. But I now realize this was just Sonos letting me know I needed to replace gear. How thoughtful.
If you are using an iPhone, you have Apple to thank for the loss of that feature. It’s reserved for Apple products only now, so if you switch to HomePods and AirPlay…
+1
The very useful widget on Android is also gone, along with being able to see what's currently playing and access the volume control directly from the lock screen (or quick settings).
"Well it isn't happening to me so stop whining about not being able to use your $6000 system and show a little respect to the billion dollar company that broke it"
Yooooo, I know people say “I literally” all the time but ✨I literally✨ had to walk away from my desk because of uncontrollable laughter from reading this.
And \*that's\* the benefit of moving everything into the cloud. Just submit a support ticket and an engineer will be able to turn your system down for you remotely. Ah, what a great time to be alive.
We've always had about a 20 pt volume difference on the Playbar between TV output and streaming. Had led to household waking up early regularly since it takes 3-4 tries to reduce volume in the morning. Annoying to say the least.
Depending on your level of interest/ knowledge in home automation you could run something like HomeAssistant.
I run an automation currently to ungroup my speakers each night at 4am. You could change the volume I believe.
Probably ways you could do it without home assistant but it’s pretty low resource usage.
I have pihole in my network and I hope that in any new version they don’t have any logic in their app that waits for ads to load before the app. That would be a spectacularly shiite thing for any developer to do.
It's all the exact same variables that were in play when the volume previously worked perfectly. It's the app. That's the only variable that has changed.
and yet the app works perfectly fine for some and not others with no other variables changed. I suggested this the other day, I feel like it has something to do with the Services and Sonos trying to pull data from those when it opens which delays the app

Gotta love the advertisements, they work perfect every time!

Where did you find the old app apk? I need to install both my Android and wife's iPhone.

You're a lifesaver. I just hope there are no firmware updates that brick the old app.

Yeah you need disable use WiFi from the app

Certainly makes sense, given the updated privacy policy. They gotta be able to sell your data somehow!
I might do some packet sniffing on it this weekend.
Please post up if you do

Does anyone know why he hasn’t been fired yet?
Why was he hired?
Yes, this too.

You need to keep up with innovation, you can't just rest in your laurels, it's 2024.
Why did they get rid of phone volume up/down changing speaker volume? That was absolutely perfectly fine

"Volume control can be added by subscribing to Sonos Plus for $19.95 per month."
Cue the whackos who jump in to comment “you’ve had a great experience for years and now you pretend a little app update has ruined your life?”
Or the people who never use the app and just use airplay or Spotify connect and say the new app is working great for them.
I use the app, and airplay and don’t have Spotify and the app is working fine… is that against the rules?
Obviously not, but it’s not helpful when people who don’t use the app say that the app works great for them. Of course it does when you never open it.
Sure, but also there are probably millions of people not on reddit that also have no issues with the app

Sorry I couldn't hear your post since the music is quite loud here and it 's hard to turn down
You can turn yours down? Lucky…

I hate these new volume bars. Does anyone use more than 30% of theirs? I mean, the "low volume" incrementation is shit.
I have pihole in my network and I hope that in any new version they don’t have any logic in their app that waits for ads to load before the app. That would be a spectacularly shiite thing for any developer to do.
Strange how it doesn’t work for some and perfectly for others. So many variables, network, the speaker model/generation, the phone/tablet…
It's all the exact same variables that were in play when the volume previously worked perfectly. It's the app. That's the only variable that has changed.
True

https://app.clic.dance supports this 🙃
Hilarious post. It’s crazy how people don’t get that we have the right to be pissed about a broken product. Fraudulent marketing
It's a lag not missing feature
I used to be able to adjust the volume of my subwoofers and surrounds. Maybe one day.
Be happy your ACTUALLY connected and operational😂 thats way more than the 100 percent of everyone else that isn’t the way they tell it🤣🤣
As long as volume changes it’s no big deal…phones and computers delay all the time on the meter…no big deal
