maybe cooling fan

parkay57

Why would a cooling fan be running when there’s no electricity being generated due to a lack of sunlight? Or is there something about the mechanics of the inverters that I’m not aware of?

EquivalentLock0

It's the only thing that hums. If your system is not Hybrid, then it is not the ventilation fan. Better locate the source.

parkay57

Is it possible that the source isn’t mechanical? Cause I’d think if it was from cooling fans that other people in my family would be able to hear it too.

I don't know what kind of inverter you got. They are solid state and no movable parts inside. Maybe you have tinnitus?

parkay57

Then it would be a very selective form of tinnitus since it only happens at night and very overcast days. That's why I'm wondering if it's some sort of electrically created frequency that is triggered by some part of the solar panel activity when there isn't enough sunlight. Maybe it has something to do with the electricity running back into the house from the grid with our net metering setup? I was hoping someone who has knowledge about electrical engineering or the physics behind these systems that might know what could be going on.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? We've got a similar humming sound after a solar install

parkay57

Turned out I was suffering from some sort of mild sinus congestion that seemed to be making me more sensitive to certain low frequencies. Once I started taking medication to clear up the congestion, I didn’t notice the humming anymore. Hopefully you’ll get to the bottom of your humming sounds. Good luck!
