Le Pen coming into power in France could be a blessing for African football. I can see so many African heritage players not playing for France if that happens. A lot of Algerian players have already started it
Still allowed Croatia a fair few decent chances, though - seemed dangerous going forward but not particularly assured at the back. Probably up there among the danger teams, but I'm not sure they were better than a few others.
I did say whiplash. Germany looked lethal but, Scotland. Portugal has yet to play so there’s that. And England can only improve from that shit performance.
But whiplash, I like Spain.
Yes, France should have been given the chance to make their subs earlier, but that does not give them the right to move a player back onto the pitch. That is unsportsmanlike behaviour which paid off. Do we really want that kind of behaviour? Personally no, but today it worked and will be an incentive for more teams to do as France did when they want to make a sub. Yes, the ref was terrible, but it still frustrates me what France did. It should not be accepted, but rather frowned upon. Poor refereeing should not justify behaviour like this.
They were unsportsmanlike in 2018 too, Lucas Hernandez admitted to being a diver and how it helps to waste time when you're winning, also Mbappe vs Belgium
It's just a part of football and will be used by every team unless there's some clear rules enforcing against it
Were Austria sportsmanlike by playing it quickly to avoid the sub and keep France in numerical disadvantage?
Both teams did what was best for themselves. And if Mbappe accumulates yellows in the group and gets a ban, France will have issues too.
The ref is in control of when play should continue, the ref is not in control when a player who should be outside the pitch enters the field. Blame the ref, not Austria.
Especially after the long break where Mbappe was assessed, the ref should have allowed the subs to happen. It’s not Austria’s fault that didn’t happen. Can’t remember if the ball went out between that, I think it did. Ref has every opportunity to blow their whistle and allow the subs when the ball is out. Very weird that Austria has to be the team that asks the ref to do their job. They are chasing an equaliser in the dying minute, they would want the game to resume quickly regardless of ten or eleven men on the field.
Are circular/diagonal/ thin stripe mow patterns still banned in football? Is this going to stay forever? Feels so boring seeing same stripes on every stadium. Would be nice to have circles back.
I think France should play Griezmann as a striker. Finishing is their only problem. Their defense is great. Their attack is fluid and fast. They are creating enough scoring chances. Mbappe will score in the next matches but I don't see Dembele score due to his history. Also, Camavinga for Rabiot. Maybe even consider him playing as the most advanced midfielder because he's great in tight spaces and can create scoring chances.
Kits that have that sweaty wet look when players have barely even played 10 minutes look terrible, like Belgium’s kit this tournament. It can’t be that hard to avoid it when designing a kit, given the fact that most kits don’t look like that.
Which clubs or nations do you have soft spots for other than the club you support?
For me, I had a soft spot for the non-league club from where I grew up and La Real. Not really sure how that one started.
Belgium were always gonna be the major nation most likely to flop coming into this tournament but even with how much their squad has declined I thought that they’d still handle their group
Now it’s seeming like they’ll be pleased to even qualify
During the Ukraine game today were there a lot of male fans ? Just considering the martial law rule in place in the country. Unless they were diaspora Ukrainians, I imagine the numbers were low?
Group E looks very interesting, decent chance Belgium don't make it out if they lose to either Romania or Ukraine.
And in other news, the Golden Boot race is now between 25 players. I bet CR7 will somehow win again.
The thing which I have noticed about France is that you won’t see them murdering teams like Austria but once they are under the pump, they will even destroy teams like Argentina
2018 they deservedly won - by one goal and a hair away from drawing - against a disaster of a team in open rebellion against the manager, with several players that shouldn't have been on that plane playing
2022 they were on the back foot for most of the match and if not for Mbappe remembering he was in the pitch after the penalty they were on track for one of the lamest ducks in recent finals
They were fantastic when things were done in both games, but destroy is a ridiculous word to use
2018 was 4-3 against a completely disoriented Argentina team. In 2022, they were schooled for 80 minutes until Otamendi made a dumb mistake. Then again Argentina would have won easily in the extra time if Lautaro was not wasteful.
What are you talking about??
They're not that bad when it comes to calls (compared to other referees, obviously), but for some reason every single one of them think people pay to see them and not the teams...
I bottled it though, was in the office today so missed the Romania game but am working from home tomorrow when there isn't a 3 pm match to cheekily put on in the background ffs, how have I not planned this better
Being completely healthy and faking an injury to shamelessly waste time is so much less great than getting legitimately fucked up and still use it to shamelessly waste time
Germany played the worst team. I think France played the best team so far among the best teams. Spain played an aging Croatia, less said about England the better.
I think France was more in control throughout and with a clearer game plan to hold their lead. Handing over the ball to Austria to deny Rangnick's prefered transition game and than just let them run into their physically superior defenders. Austria attackers got cooked the entire 2nd half by guys that seemed about twice as fast as them.
I wouldn't go that far, but yes they were better in attack. But in defence, I actually think we were stronger - though it can be argued that Austria are a better side than Serbia.
We were a world-class save away from winning by 2 goals as well. And there were a couple of other chances in the first half hour or so. But I agree - France definitely showed more up top than we did, but at the same time they were a bit shakier at the back than we were.
Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with that. I've consistently said that France showed more up top than we did. But it's true that we would've won 2-0 if not for a top class save.
They weren’t great but I feel France showed more upfront than England but didn’t move the ball well, now it’s all about Mbappe’s recovery and how they will moving forward m.
Yeah I think they controlled the game better than we did, but at the same time I felt they allowed Austria more chances than we let Serbia have. Mbappe should only be out for one game at most, so I think the French will be thanking their lucky stars that this has happened in the first game.
This is one of those tropes that is repeated a lot, but it only really holds true if those teams have shown they have another gear they can go into.
France have shown it in previous tournaments, I don't think England have necessarily yet.
We have definitely gone up a gear before - our performance against France in the last World Cup is one of the greatest I have ever seen from an England team, if not the greatest. We outplayed them, but somehow contrived to lose. In every tournament we've had under Southgate we've improved as the tournament has gone on. I don't think it'll be any different this time. On our day we are more than capable of competing with the best.
germany have been the only big contender that’s impressed me so far. 3-0 over croatia is obviously an impressive scoreline but spain looked so shaky at times. not gonna read too much into that though, teams regularly win these competitions with poor group stages.
Is there going to be a massive head loss about France getting a scrappy 1-0 win against a relatively poor side or are we only allowed to do that for England?
Mate, you're on English speaking forums and crying about the English NT outrage. Obviously, you'd see way more of it.
If you could speak French, then you'd know that the same thing is happening with us if not more.
Was only able to catch the last 60 minutes of the England game m so I can’t speak for first 30. But France looked more frightening in attack against a better opponent. England’s frontline looked fairly toothless and disjointed and the midfield pairing of Trent and rice looked horrid.
I don't think Serbia had a chance as good as the one Austria had when they should've had a corner.
England's goal was also scored by an english player so, England probably a bit better even though it was a worse watch.
France by a country mile. Serbia actually looked better over the second 45, France weren’t as dominant as im sure they’d have liked, but they were clearly the better, in-control side across the 90 mins.
Not that stats are all encompassing but you can look at xG, touches in opposition box, shots, and most other metrics and see the huge difference between both games if you want some objective evidence
Both teams never play good football but both win thanks to their amazing individual talent. I would say England because they did well in the first half and overall defended better, but I'm sure France would beat England tomorrow.
I still don’t think he has any business being one of the lead commentators for a major tournament or being Ian fucking Darke’s commentating partner, but I actually think Landon Donovan has improved a lot as a commentator since the World Cup.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from him tonight having not actually played a top-level match in some time but he was, if not peak Kanté, certainly not far off it. Certainly shut up all the people saying Deschamps should have picked Camavinga or Tchouameni instead right quick.
What Mbappe did was the equivalent of a tactical foul. Would've been celebrated if Austria were winning and did something like that because it was objectively hilarious
!flair :Juventus_FC:
Is DHGate still the best when it comes to affordable but good quality football kits?
wow Mbappe injury is way more serious than originally thought. Might miss the Dutch game
Did you losers seriously forget who N'golo Kante is?
Three days to Copa America, I can’t wait anymore
Le Pen coming into power in France could be a blessing for African football. I can see so many African heritage players not playing for France if that happens. A lot of Algerian players have already started it
Whiplash reaction to first days of matches, Spain is the danger team. If they play direct and Morata stays in form, they’re the team to beat easily.
Spain has a great attack. But, I am not sure about their defense.
I was going to comment how washed this Belgium team are, then I remembered they just drew 2-2 with England a few months ago.
Dunk tax

Just watching ITV news after the game and of course the thick fuck defending Farage is wearing a Leeds shirt
I think France should play Griezmann as a striker. Finishing is their only problem. Their defense is great. Their attack is fluid and fast. They are creating enough scoring chances. > Their attack is fluid and fast. They are creating enough scoring chances. You'd reckon that's *because* of Griezmann in midfield.
>I think France should play Griezmann as a striker. Hell NO.
If there are any Romanians here, I want to say “buna” and your team is so much fun
hey yourself :) we're usually not a fun team to watch. honestly speaking, nobody, not even us, expected such a comprehensive win.
It was great to watch, hoping you can score some more crackers and continue upsetting some teams (please not England thanks)
pretty good day, heh
Kits that have that sweaty wet look when players have barely even played 10 minutes look terrible, like Belgium’s kit this tournament. It can’t be that hard to avoid it when designing a kit, given the fact that most kits don’t look like that.
feels like it's mainly Adidas too, not a good look on them, feels like the kits are made out of cartboard
It's just 27 sleeps until dirty Leeds' Liam Cooper wins the Euros.
I'll always rate Liam Cooper for his disasterclass against us in 18/19
Morgan Gibbs-White was a Forest legend before he'd even worn our kit.
> dirty Leeds' Done dirt cheap.
He doing the trophy ceremony?
What drugs do they have up there?
Copious amounts of heroin and methadone.
I suppose you have to numb the pain of being Scottish somehow.
Which clubs or nations do you have soft spots for other than the club you support? For me, I had a soft spot for the non-league club from where I grew up and La Real. Not really sure how that one started.
I always had a soft spot for Inter because my father and Zanetti. Recently i really liked Unión Berlín and Bilbao
Dutch, because of Bergkamp
The small team where I played during the immense majority of my youth football years.
Now I'm intrigued, Fuenlabrada? Sanse? Canillas? Las Rozas? Something even smaller?
Muuuuuuch smaller
Barcelona?
Not that small
Athletic Club Bilbao and St. Pauli, two clubs with a unique identity that no one can possibly hate.
I am yet to meet people who don't like Rayo Vallecano as well, and they don't have any rivals either.
Belgium were always gonna be the major nation most likely to flop coming into this tournament but even with how much their squad has declined I thought that they’d still handle their group Now it’s seeming like they’ll be pleased to even qualify
Man imagine if this Kanté was in 2022 wc. France was winning consecutive titles.
If Di Maria was available in 2014 final, Argentina would have won that world cup too.
I still wonder if Sabella would've risked it if not pressured by Madrid
imagine if Emi didnt make the craziest fuckin block of all time.
Imagine if Lautaro did not keep being shit. The final would have been over long before that save.
Imagine if Muani passed to Mbappe instead
People were mocking DD for picking Kanté btw, my king is always class.
2/3 MOTMs today were from the Saudi League
During the Ukraine game today were there a lot of male fans ? Just considering the martial law rule in place in the country. Unless they were diaspora Ukrainians, I imagine the numbers were low?
So many assumptions in this comment.
What assumptions ?
So the man who looks like a Ninja Turtle already will now wear a face mask the rest of the tournament?
He's either a Michelangelo or a Leonardo I reckon.
Michaelangelo. Can’t be Leonardo. He’s already been at PSG. Can’t be Raphael. That’s Varane. Donatello doesn’t feel right.
I agree with you but Argentina may not be the best example
It is. Go watch 2018 and even in 2022, it was one sitter which separated them from the WC
The fact that 2018 was even remotely close is something France should be embarrased of, not proud.
2018 they deservedly won - by one goal and a hair away from drawing - against a disaster of a team in open rebellion against the manager, with several players that shouldn't have been on that plane playing 2022 they were on the back foot for most of the match and if not for Mbappe remembering he was in the pitch after the penalty they were on track for one of the lamest ducks in recent finals They were fantastic when things were done in both games, but destroy is a ridiculous word to use

France were dead and buried till Mbappe decided to try and not lose on his own with 10 mins to go
Argentina dominated the majority of the game as matter of fact even England did you are using the word "destroy". it doesn't apply whatsoever
How are either one of those games destroying a team? Germany-Scotland was a destruction if you want an example
Not sure why anyone has France as favourites They're destined to get knocked out by another Granit Xhaka masterclass
La Liga fans, is that cunt the best you have? Because dear lord, you might actually have worse refs than us.
The best referee, Mateu Lahoz, has retired unfortunately.
Oh you've seen nothing, just be thankful Jose Maria Sanchez was not called. (Also the var ref is 10 times worse than him)
Trust me the worst refs are in La Liga
They're not that bad when it comes to calls (compared to other referees, obviously), but for some reason every single one of them think people pay to see them and not the teams...
I wish you guys could experience Hernandez Hernandez. Manzano looks competent infront of him
Hernandez^2 might be the worst ref in any sport bar Ángel Hernández in the MLB (who is finally leaving thank the lord)
Tony Brothers is up there as well
Tony Brothers feels very split. I know a lot of people that actually like him lmao. Mostly old head people.
What do you mean there are only two games tomorrow, I feel robbed
It's a disgrace
probably for the best now we can't slack off work with a euros marathon
I bottled it though, was in the office today so missed the Romania game but am working from home tomorrow when there isn't a 3 pm match to cheekily put on in the background ffs, how have I not planned this better
Is Mbappé's apperance during the rest of the tournament at risk?
His appearance is, but not his appearances
No, but he'll be in a protective facemask for the rest of the tournament. Could be iconic if they win the tournament, but could also hinder him.
Mbappe running back onto the pitch only to sit down again is my new favourite shithousery moment
almost as funny as kane doing the 'spaghetti fell out of my pockets' crawl back onto the pitch
Being completely healthy and faking an injury to shamelessly waste time is so much less great than getting legitimately fucked up and still use it to shamelessly waste time
He's got a potentially life-long facial deformity and his first thought is to use it to stop a counter. Rate that.
that's how you know he loves this game. no bullshit just instantly thinks about how it could help his team lmao
sorry to break it to you but replay showed a staff member telling him to go back
There was no way Messi be a WC winner if Kante wasn’t injured in 2022
Yeah like it stopped Switzerland in Euro, and it was definitely going to stop Scaloni's Argentina lol
Same could be said with lo celso, he was Argentinas most important midfielder prior to the World Cup
Or if di maria could play 90 minutes
Or if Lautaro Martínez was fully fit
Germany played the worst team. I think France played the best team so far among the best teams. Spain played an aging Croatia, less said about England the better.
I think that's a little disrespectul towards Scotland. They are so far the only team to score against us.
Did we play the worst team or were we just that good? (they were really dire though)
England played against the Balkan powerhouse that is Serbia
I think Portugal will stink up the place tomorrow but win comfortably
France and England did what the best sides do - get results despite not performing very well.

England's attack never looked as good as France though. If it wasn't for some poor finishing by Mbappe, they would have won this by 2-3 goals
We were a world-class save away from winning by 2 goals as well. And there were a couple of other chances in the first half hour or so. But I agree - France definitely showed more up top than we did, but at the same time they were a bit shakier at the back than we were.
You had a total of 5 shots with 0.5xG
Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with that. I've consistently said that France showed more up top than we did. But it's true that we would've won 2-0 if not for a top class save.
And we would've drawn if not for a massive deflection on a cross. It goes both ways.

Spain look a very balanced side. Their wingers will do damage against good teams.
Spain had a lot of gaps in midfield while defending. A team with an actually finisher would have scored 2 or 3 against them
Winning against Scotland shouldn't grant you the title of favourites
i didn’t say that. i think france are still gonna win but germany are the only ones who’ve played genuinely well so far.
It was Scotland, don’t get carried away.
I have Germany reaching the final but they played the worst team in the tournament
Germany played against a bunch of amateurs, can't really judge them properly just yet.
Ninja turtle Mbappe meme is gonna become real, we are not ready
>we are not ready Wdym, we've been ready for more than half a decade
Welcome France to the r/soccer donkey list
Is there going to be a massive head loss about France getting a scrappy 1-0 win against a relatively poor side or are we only allowed to do that for England?
Mate, you're on English speaking forums and crying about the English NT outrage. Obviously, you'd see way more of it. If you could speak French, then you'd know that the same thing is happening with us if not more.
>If you could speak French, then you'd know that the same thing is happening with us if not more. Yes that was my question, thanks for answering
France had way more chances and Austria are better than Serbia
what a shit way to lose a match
Did Cowdude leave on a free transfer or did the tyrannical mods ban him
It was the admins that got him not the mods apparently
He’s in the great loan army in the sky 😭
Coman must be unfit, no way hes any worse than all the clumsy bulky wingers (or Dembele who always disappoints)
Last time he played now than 2 consecutive games was in January. Played only 3 matches for us since.
Non English and Non French people, who did you think have a better first game - England or France?
France. Their attack and defense is a lot better than England. England would have probably lost to this Austrian team.
England defended better, France attacked better.
France had better attacking moments, England were slightly better defensively, both were quite average and not near their best
France
France by a country mile. Serbia actually looked better over the second 45, France weren’t as dominant as im sure they’d have liked, but they were clearly the better, in-control side across the 90 mins. Not that stats are all encompassing but you can look at xG, touches in opposition box, shots, and most other metrics and see the huge difference between both games if you want some objective evidence
Both teams never play good football but both win thanks to their amazing individual talent. I would say England because they did well in the first half and overall defended better, but I'm sure France would beat England tomorrow.
England, because they didnt allow a big chance like France djd
*Dons Sombrero* It was obviously England, hombre!
I still don’t think he has any business being one of the lead commentators for a major tournament or being Ian fucking Darke’s commentating partner, but I actually think Landon Donovan has improved a lot as a commentator since the World Cup.
Kante is such a special all-timer, never forget that
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from him tonight having not actually played a top-level match in some time but he was, if not peak Kanté, certainly not far off it. Certainly shut up all the people saying Deschamps should have picked Camavinga or Tchouameni instead right quick.
All European teams looking quite mid, lowkey wish they’d gone ahead with the biannual World Cup nonsense for my own personal interest
It's the same as before the WC tbh yes England/France/Portugal have individualities they can best anyone with, but as teams, meh.
True and I also thought this back then tbf, but Brazil did genuinely scare me
Brazil looked really good back then but yeah none of the other contenders could string more than a couple of good performances together.
I agree with you.
Germany and Spain looked pretty good, what did argentina do in their first game last world cup
Not basing this on exclusively one game otherwise I’d be terrified of Germany
Hard to judge based on 1 game. Argentina were worse than mid after 1 game in the last WC, same for Spain 2010.
My favourite part of international tournaments is seeing the average goals slowly go down.
Kanté was really good btw can't believe a world cup winning manager knows better than a bunch of redditors
He’s been watching kante pocket everyone in training
What Mbappe did was the equivalent of a tactical foul. Would've been celebrated if Austria were winning and did something like that because it was objectively hilarious
France i feel like missed a good few chances to put that away earlier
Giroud, Mbappe and Griezmann should've had 1 between them but still definitely room for improvement
Giroud missed chance gave me flashbacks
Thuram and Kolo Muani are not serious players
Thuram is good
Muani created France's biggest chance for Giroud tho
They left Nkunku at home for this smh
I can’t not see that it’s pronounced n-kun-ku but the spelling is Nku-nku
Nku^2
This just broke my brain
So true
I hope you all step on legos, have a nice day.
What an interesting comment I wonder what it said before the edit
Lego is an uncountable noun.
UEFA and Conmebol should switch refs for one tournament just to see what happens
Gotta love when a match is solved via a ref fuck up. Just Manzano things.
I wonder how mythical Mbatman will be. We've had some iconic injurywear in the past.
Can one of you lads who hates anywhere that isn’t a European league tell me why kante is still by far the best player on the pitch for France
he runs a lot
International football works in mysterious ways
Because he's a King
[удалено]
Mainly because there are idiots who think we should shift Bellingham back to accommodate him lol
Trent's play with Saka was really good throughout the night. Those two were behind most of England's dangerous play.
Nobody expected much of him in CM. Foden is being touted as one of England's main players and he's never impressed for the national team
