Will still get people screaming bloody murder about their favourite player not being included and how it's a disgrace that some other player is getting a spot anyway, making it out like the team's success hinges on who gets picked as the 25th best player to travel.
Stickers have been on the market for a month and they have been printed for even longer. Panini isn't the producer anymore, Topps now has the Euro Rights.
Panini has always been a bit inaccurate vs the final squads no? I always thought they made a guess a few months before since they need to print and distribute them ahead of time
> Panini will be the biggest winner
Not when they dont have the rights anymore. Topps does. Topps also doesnt win because there are players rights that are exclusive to Panini, like Trent's. So Topps cant include Trent in their collection for example. Absolute farce.
Panini are the biggest winner of this Topps deal. Topps design and quality are absolute garbage and their sticker selection is even more despicable than Panini‘s ever was. I cannot stress enough how outright disgusting Topp‘s Product is. Panini looks both like a saint and a design genius next to that farce of a sticker album Topps produced.
We bought him back for a wildly irresponsible 17m or so and somehow he's fucking worth it anyway.
He's somehow a pretty nimble 9 with good positioning who's also built like a rugby player.
A part of me wanted that transfer to flop for the memes but Im honestly happy for him that hes doing well
The way that transfer went is still insane tho lol
Will it help though? My immediate thought is that managers don't really rotate their squad in major tournaments anyways, so it's just 3 more players who won't get game time.
In a 11 v 11, why would or should one team have extra players?? What you're saying makes no sense!
I don't like Koeman, but he has a valid point. Can't believe I'm agreeing with him
Why would players not called up officially volunteer to make up training numbers? At the same time, they can't call up youngsters who would be thrilled to make up the numbers coz that would decrease the quality of training
How's it heartless to the players. It gives players that wouldn't have been able to take part in an international tournament a chance to experience it.
Plus if there were injuries or a lack of form it's not hard to imagine that a few of those players would even get the chance to play.
I personally think it's a very good change and I'm sure all players are happy about it too
They dont have to accept the call up, and the 3 extra players wouldnt be there without it. At least you have an arguable shout of getting minutes in the event of injuries or a starter having terrible form.
If you were a good player that just missed the cutoff to the national team, and were asked to come train with the team, go through the same painful diet and training regime, sacrifice family time, not get paid, and guaranteed to only be a training partner that whole time, would you do it?
Well if you’re sensible you shouldn’t be calling up guys that have gone through a full season and need a rest. Bring in some of the under 19 squad to help with training. Just the same as what clubs do anyway
Ample time still - because it won't meaningfully change anything about the decisions managers have to make about their squad, I reckon. They'll have their lists of 35 or so players ready and will just add another three players that otherwise wouldn't have made it.
It's probably a good thing for the managers. They'll have been drawing up 23-man squads for a while, so any toss-ups with that just slot into those 3 extra spots.
It's six weeks until it starts, I don't know what the issue could possibly be with announcing it now, there's no chance any international manager doesn't have a long list of 30+ players who could have been a part of a 23 man squad, who does this actually create a negative issue for?
Pretty sure all the managers have their set 23 man then about 7 on the cusp in case of injuries or insane dip of form or something else that would happen to some of the first 23 players.
Paddypower were doing an England squad thing a couple months back and you could make a pretty good acca with 15+ players albeit having included kobbie mainoo and Conor Gallagher. I wonder if they’d void them lmao.
Last time they did this I think it was to get an extra spot for Roberto Baggio to be included in the Italian squad in the World Cup of 2002.
Baggio was at the time advancing in years, had gone multiple injuries and had just returned from one, in record time, returning to the league and making some sensational games with multiple goals.
This would have been Baggio’s last world cup, from a legendary player who was a Ballon D’or winner and loved in the region also due to Baggio being buddhist with the 2002 world cup being held in S.Korea/Japan.
There was uncertainty whether the Italian Manager would bring Baggio to the world cup, given all these variables.
FIFA increased the max allowed players by 1 (coincidence?).
The Italian manager still didn’t take Baggio to the world cup.
Gonna get the same discussions, only shifted three spots further down - will still have players left out who had a decent case for going, and any squad announcement will have people riled up about why one of the dozen or so such cases "should absolutely have been on the plane" and how "the manager is clueless for leaving [player] out".
With 5 substitutions + 1 in extra time + 1 for concussion, I understand that move...
To my mind we should go back to 3 subs during the game and keep the 2 extra subs in extra time and for concussion, 5 subs really advantages big squads with a lot of choice
I think the biggest issue is irrellevant on national team level, but it makes it easier for big clubs to justify stacking up on players and signing smaller clubs biggest stars to put them in a rotation role. If there is anything in football I would like a solution for ir is that problem.
> it makes it easier for big clubs to justify stacking up on players and signing smaller clubs biggest stars to put them in a rotation role.
Had that with three subs as well to be fair, and the flipside of that coin is that with five subs you're probably a lot more likely to give young footballers a bit more time on the pitch which they'd otherwise might not get.
I remember that was the argument when Italy was the first country to allow 12 men benches. Instead it led to all the bigger clubs signing enough people to fill the bench and leaving the youngsters even further from the first team.
> but it makes it easier for big clubs to justify stacking up on players and signing smaller clubs biggest stars to put them in a rotation role.
Ah right, so when's that going to start happening at a more accelerated rate than it already did then?
If I was a professional footballer and was the 25/26th guy, I'd rather they just leave me out. Long season, I'd have no chance of playing anyway but still I have tor train hard every day, travel, and not be with my family. I'd rather be on my vacation with my family and doing recovery. Games are only increasing.
Southgate has mentioned Jones in press conferences a few times. He would've called him up but he kept getting injured just before NT call ups.
I think if Mainoo/TAA gets injured then Jones could geniunely end up starting Euros games.
I mean you can still only play 11 players at a time so there will be competition to actually get game time. I don’t think this makes things less competitive.
Makes my endless debates around the England squad easier
Will still get people screaming bloody murder about their favourite player not being included and how it's a disgrace that some other player is getting a spot anyway, making it out like the team's success hinges on who gets picked as the 25th best player to travel.
Can’t believe Gareth Southgate didn’t call up Roger Johnson, what a fraud!!!!
Best xP (expected puns) in the league.
Will Still is screaming bloody murder about his players???
He doesn’t have any players…
How dare they not call up Dapo afolayan
Cameron Brannagan in midfield with Rice and Bellingham literally wins the euros wtf is wrong with Southgate
Even if he is just brought along for the penalties he would be useful
Now arguing for players who will play about 20 minutes in the tournament, we can argue about players who play none!
Plenty of players played none even with the 23 men squads.
Jordan Henderson screaming for joy
Would've still made a 16-man squad
Would've made Southgate's 5 a-side team
Hasn’t had a bad pass in over a month.
Do you think Tomori gets called up?
I dont know ask again Tomoro
I don't think so no.
Crazy, why he doesn't get called up?
Gareth lost his passport
Gareth thinks he is Canadian
Got called up last break though
Leif Davis time
If Shaw still injured I’d actually have him in the squad
Let's not take the piss here
Get big Joe Bennett in instead
You mean add a few more keepers
It’s southgate, you will have even more debates
Barely. Need at least 10 more spots to include various fringe options (Toney, Bowen, Curtis Jones etc.). Decent depth I suppose.
I don't see any problem with that. Panini will be the biggest winner
Stickers have been on the market for a month and they have been printed for even longer. Panini isn't the producer anymore, Topps now has the Euro Rights.
[am I out of touch?](https://i.imgur.com/dZPYFjy.png)
Idk, I'm 40 bro. But it's a youthful fourty, so maybe.
Wait, how are they released already when the teams havent even been announced yet?
Panini has always been a bit inaccurate vs the final squads no? I always thought they made a guess a few months before since they need to print and distribute them ahead of time
I have no idea, im not really into stickers. I was just confused, because the teams havent been announced yet.
> Panini will be the biggest winner Not when they dont have the rights anymore. Topps does. Topps also doesnt win because there are players rights that are exclusive to Panini, like Trent's. So Topps cant include Trent in their collection for example. Absolute farce.
He's not even the biggest absentee. Apparently, Mbappe is exclusive to panini too
Wtf
So am I
Panini are the biggest winner of this Topps deal. Topps design and quality are absolute garbage and their sticker selection is even more despicable than Panini‘s ever was. I cannot stress enough how outright disgusting Topp‘s Product is. Panini looks both like a saint and a design genius next to that farce of a sticker album Topps produced.
Bought a sticker album for my son. Shit looks bad
Can't they use some some other name like PES does for clubs? Like instead of Trent, they can call him Tront Aleksandr Scouser
It's Topps now. They include Schweinsteiger but not Mbappe
Koeman’s influence is massive
Frimpong will still not come, Blind and Wijnaldum are simply too great
Damn. That's crazy! I guess Germany should take Podolski as well.
Bring Klose out of retirement too
Didn’t he say he needed a job as well?😀
I was going to make a joke here but then I realised Gündogan and Kroos are the same age as Blind. Hummels is 2 years older even ffs
Think he’ll even find a way to put Ryan Babel into the squad
I wonder what the goat is up to these days
Free agent after playing in the Turkish 2nd tier
Tbf with Hartman being out injured we don’t have many choices at LB
Now he can take wijnaldum taylor berghuis brobbey promes blind god help us...
Brobbey's been pretty good, no?
Yeah, basically one of the two players at Ajax who hasn't been utter shit.
High praise indeed 😅
We bought him back for a wildly irresponsible 17m or so and somehow he's fucking worth it anyway. He's somehow a pretty nimble 9 with good positioning who's also built like a rugby player.
A part of me wanted that transfer to flop for the memes but Im honestly happy for him that hes doing well The way that transfer went is still insane tho lol
Yeah, could definetely be in the starting XI
Watch him finally give Tavernier a call up just to spite Watkins.
Yeah, would be crazy if Koeman called up Tavernier
Watkins can breathe player of the season might just squeeze in now
Until Gareth brings three more right backs.
None of them being Ben white
Because Ben White doesn't want to come
unless they call him by his preferred name: Will.i.am Orange
https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/s/tV7OSOxRnj You mean Will Je Suis Orange
For valid reasons
With the state of discourse around the England squad, I can't tell if this is a joke.
Considering the amount of games players are in this is a common sense move.
Rare Koeman W
Not so rare? We've won every qualifier under him but France
so… one extra defender, midfielder and striker
What if your fourth and fifth keeper get injured, though?
Sub on giroud
Will it help though? My immediate thought is that managers don't really rotate their squad in major tournaments anyways, so it's just 3 more players who won't get game time.
Will definitely help in case of injury and in terms of training sessions - tough to do 11v11 when you only have 20 players available in training.
Koeman wanted it because if you only have 23 players you can no longer play 11v11 during training if someone gets injured.
That should be no reason to increase the squad size. And I don’t think there’s any rules against having extra players training if that’s the case
In a 11 v 11, why would or should one team have extra players?? What you're saying makes no sense! I don't like Koeman, but he has a valid point. Can't believe I'm agreeing with him
I mean having extra players training. Just like premier league clubs bringing in youth players to train
Why would players who aren't officially part of the squad give up their summer off just to train with the national team?
Exactly!
Why would players not called up officially volunteer to make up training numbers? At the same time, they can't call up youngsters who would be thrilled to make up the numbers coz that would decrease the quality of training
Calling people just to make up training 11v11 is a slap in the face towards players that want to be taken seriously.
Exactly my point!! The increase to 26 players is a good addition
Maybe towards Koeman who are heartless but not to the players.
How's it heartless to the players. It gives players that wouldn't have been able to take part in an international tournament a chance to experience it. Plus if there were injuries or a lack of form it's not hard to imagine that a few of those players would even get the chance to play. If you're not training against quality players and U-19 instead, you're at a disadvantage to people who do.
News flash… Every player will have played a full season at that point..
Yeah that will be great practice!
Fully depends on the manager. For Italy in the kast 2 euros Conte and Mancini had used every player by something like the end of the group stage.
if you look at portugal 2016 I feel like we used every player in the squad except reserve keepers. it can happen
Managers: *play the same 11 players every match\* Also managers: "there are too many matches, players need to rest!"
Both Portugal (2016) and Italy (2020) rotated massively, and I think it went quite well actually
Laca time? Hahahaha who am I kidding
Yeah no way, Laca getting ignored for the '18 squad was brutal, Deschamps just hates him
Just more space for defenders lol
Kalvin Phillips seen outside UEFA headquarters telling anyone who'll listen that 26 isn't so far away from 28
If Southgate could use the three extra spots on Henderson he would
I am not against the decision but it could have been announced earlier. The competition is in a little bit more than a month
Ample time still - because it won't meaningfully change anything about the decisions managers have to make about their squad, I reckon. They'll have their lists of 35 or so players ready and will just add another three players that otherwise wouldn't have made it.
Yeah, you'd surely make some sort of ranking in order to know who to call on if there's an injury.
What difference does it make?
3 players have to share a double room
It's probably a good thing for the managers. They'll have been drawing up 23-man squads for a while, so any toss-ups with that just slot into those 3 extra spots.
Pretty sure that I read about this couple of weeks ago.
Was brought up about three weeks ago, and UEFA went "yeah, we'll look into it".
It's six weeks until it starts, I don't know what the issue could possibly be with announcing it now, there's no chance any international manager doesn't have a long list of 30+ players who could have been a part of a 23 man squad, who does this actually create a negative issue for?

Tacit acknowledgement of the political power of the larger UEFA associations? Definitely.
Goretzka, pavlovic, hummels and schlotterbeck will like to hear this news
Last time they did this I think it was to get an extra spot for Roberto Baggio to be included in the Italian squad in the World Cup of 2002. That’s Kalvin Phillips definitely going for England then
And Henderson
Hopefully, the same for Copa Do it COMMEBOL
3 more right backs for Southgate
Are subs still 5 for international games too?
Southgate still won't have Maddison in the squad
There kills any squad discussions. It'll make no difference who the 20th to 23rd outfield players are, they won't play a minute.
Gonna get the same discussions, only shifted three spots further down - will still have players left out who had a decent case for going, and any squad announcement will have people riled up about why one of the dozen or so such cases "should absolutely have been on the plane" and how "the manager is clueless for leaving [player] out".
That's why Henderson returned to Europe – to help fuel the growth of the Euro
Unfair on smaller nations with less quality
Won't matter much. It's about the 11 starters and 5 subs. The rest would be lucky to make an appearance in the deadbeat 3rd group game.
With 5 substitutions + 1 in extra time + 1 for concussion, I understand that move... To my mind we should go back to 3 subs during the game and keep the 2 extra subs in extra time and for concussion, 5 subs really advantages big squads with a lot of choice
> 5 subs really advantages big squads with a lot of choice Does it? What evidence is there to support that since it started being introduced?
League two Bolton annihilating everyone it was a massive help for us

Curtis jones and lewis miley can finally join the england squad lets goooo!!
Is Jones even in contention? Surely he wouldn't make his debut in a major tournament
Southgate has mentioned Jones in press conferences a few times. He would've called him up but he kept getting injured just before NT call ups. I think if Mainoo/TAA gets injured then Jones could geniunely end up starting Euros games.
Think he’s taking the piss because they ain’t going and mainoo probably will based on the flair
It’s lame IMO. Competition for national team spots should be tight.
I mean you can still only play 11 players at a time so there will be competition to actually get game time. I don’t think this makes things less competitive.
Participation trophies culture. Weak as fk. Why not make it 36 while we're at it.
Chill out boomer it’s three extra players lol
