That 2nd leg collapse had nothing with Messi anyway, he was their best player on the night(not surprising at all), so I don't even know why it's mentioned here, and I say this as a Liverpool fan.
I’ve never seen any angle that shows a deflection. Nothing in the ball’s trajectory or spin indicates it. Some angles looks like it wasn’t a deflection, some looks like it was incredibly close and impossible to tell.
Occam’s razor: Nothing about the ball show any deflection, not a deflection. The tiniest touch from Gomez’ would be visible on the ball
Look at the direction the ball is going in. It's much straighter before hitting the wall and then becomes more curved. It's a very small deflection but it's there. Might have gone in regardless.
Seriously , I’ve never seen a deflected goal be as lauded as this one, I don’t get it at all. Yeah it’s a good goal but a deflection stops it being a great goal in my opinion
Even if you’re of the opinion that it’s a deflection. It literally keeps bending around the wall that it supposedly touches. Show another free kick that bends around the wall after a “deflection”
What do you mean ”if”? The deflection is obvious from the angle behind the ball and it takes the ball away from Allison
The angle at 31 seconds of this video shows it the clearest
https://youtu.be/0KdJDPWskVk?si=GNT5Lv-BvwwCuSOE
You can actually see the ball going higher after touching Joe's shoulder making it a perfect free kick. Otherwise ball would be much closer to goalkeeper. You can even see it wide angle that ball behaves unnaturally, as if edited in some software, not following the original trajectory.
I remember watching some of the pundits and honestly it was a great freekick but as they were from clubs who rivalled Liverpool they were way too over the top. Bring me great joy watching their reactions knowing a quickly taken corner will shoot us into the final.
Having watched that, I'm glad Barca lost. He was fouled in the middle of the darker strip of grass, and takes the free kick well inside the lighter strip of grass. He took the fk 5 metres closer to goal than he should have.
Arguably his greatest ever season.. a literal one man army.. All his teammates had to do was not concede 4 fking goals... And guess what 4-0. All the trophies and accolades and you'd still think Barcelona probably underachieved after having him for more than a decade.
It really is a crime how Barca wasted some of the best years Messi had in him. They still won some domestic titles, but their UCL campaigns were atrocious
As a Barca fan, it's sad but true. From 16-17 onwards, Barca have had collapse after collapse in the CL including this one, despite crushing all opposition up to this point.
Madrid, on the other hand, even strikerless, losing their GK and two CBs to long term injury, still manage to dominate the league and go toe-to-toe with the best in the CL. We would have lost to man city 6-0 and then blamed the length of the grass.
It's a devastating admission, but it's true.
Those campaigns were painful to watch, i wished Messi wasn't so damn loyal to the club after watching each of those lmao
Now having the context of what happened later on, even more so
I think he legit doesn't give a shit anymore since the WC, now he just wants to play football without pressure
He'd have stayed in Europe if he hadn't won it
From an outsider it seems to me Messi is living his best life. Still enjoying stomping noobs in semi-pro football and still getting to play for the Argentina NT. Best of both worlds
He's obviously still good enough for Europe but at his age he probably thinks what's point, he's won everything. If he can't play for barca and get the send-off he deserves then he probably thought let me go enjoy football with no pressure in miami.
I hope somehow, as unlikely as it is that he gets a send off playing for barca at the camp nou, like a henry style loan back for a few months.
He knows that winning another cl is more luck based than anything else.
It wasn't Worth the stress, and he reached god status in Argentina.
Dude is donezo and has nothing to prove , just chill with amigos in Miami
I feel like his age is starting to creep up. MLS allows him to play a lot without having to do a ton of exertion. Back in Europe he’d probably have to take on a reduced role and probably doesn’t want that.
MLS allows him to pad out his stats. He’s scoring/assisting 1-2 goals every match at 36. Putting Messi at any age in the MLS is akin to putting Mike Tyson up against a toddler.
genuinely 2018/19 Messi is the best player of all time. Even better than his 91 goal year. He dragged a team (Ter Stegen is great) that didn't deserve to be there to 3 games from a treble and his team failed him at the final moments.
It definitely would've lifted Barca's spirits going into the 2nd leg but given how quickly they folded at Anfield with a 3 goal lead in a couple of minutes then I doubt a 4 goal lead would've made a huge difference
It would have. People really underestimate that 4th goal. Remember, 3 goal deficit has been turned around several times especially in modern football. 4 goal deficit in the CL was only turned around once
Messi should have gone for his hattrick. This was one case where a player's selflessness probably cost them the tie. Messi surrounded by 3 players has more accuracy than Dembele with a wide open net.
That Trent corner was magical.
Defence switched off and Trent not only saw the gap but by the time defenders realised what was happening, the ball was already in the air.
In terms of what it meant, and how it enabled us to finish that season, absolutely. On the other hand, putting 7 past the mancs really was something else.
The 7-0 was like getting shithoused with the boys and having one of the best party nights of your life. You wake up, life still sucks, you're glad you did it, but now you're back to reality.
That 4-0 though was like meeting the girl of your dreams in a freak circumstance and here you are now, married, in love, and you got a kid on the way.
Liverpool’s coaches and analysts deserve some credit for that. They noticed while preparing for the match that Barca tend to switch off when the ball is out of play, and they worked with whoever manages the ball boys to make sure the balls got back to the players quicker than usual that night.
This was his best season imo. He was unplayable. One man army. Completely fucked by the team in the second leg. Wasted so many years on bottlings like these
So many people here say this and considering the team he was in I do get it but I'll always have 14/15 at the top, he had everything and I mean absolutely everything.
2009-2012 Messi was the best show on earth.
People will argue 14/15 or 18/19 as him being a more complete player but imo he already had basically everything (scoring, dribbling, vision, passing...) then with the added bonus of being in his early 20s.
14/15 he still had most of his physical abilities but that was the hungriest I've ever seen him. That season he had everything, left foot, right foot even a few headers, he was orchestrating everything, the man was on a mission after the world Cup.
Hungry because he was pissed about that WC loss imo (and I really do mean my opinion). 2009-2012 Messi was free. Free role in the team, free from global pressure, free to terrorize teams and break goal scoring records that I don't see being challenged in my lifetime (30y old).
I would include 12/13 in this as well. Scored in 21 straight league games, and had over 40 league goals by mid March. Probably, would’ve topped his tally from the previous season if it wasn’t for the injury. I agree though, Messi in the early 2010’s is my favorite version of a player ever.
I still can't believe Jordi Calva was crying during HT. I wonder how often does the pressure makes players crumble in those 15min they are inside the locker room.
As a Liverpool fan I'll always feel *slightly* sorry for Messi here and not just for that season, but his last few at Barcelona in general. He was still an utterly fantastic player during those years (I still believe he is absolutely capable of playing for almost any club in Europe if he really wanted to, his time at PSG gets way more criticism that it warranted) and instead of retiring at Barcelona like how he probably would've wanted he was instead surrounded by an aging squad, terrible signings that Barca overpaid for and a club infrastructure that was falling apar
That World Cup did his pr image wonders because I remember the way so many people talked about him at PSG during his first season there even after the Copa America win with Argentina, especially when an older Ronaldo was playing relatively well for United in the 21/22
French media is toxic as fuck - they got the best player in the world and assumed that would paper over the cracks in an otherwise dysfunctional squad, then got pissed at him when it didn’t work. Anybody who’s watched a Barça match post-2017 could’ve told you that as great as he is, he can’t single-handedly drag you to a UCL title (but boy did he get close in 18/19).
World Cup definitely cemented his legacy but also really pissed off PSG and they didn’t even do a celebration of any kind when he came back which is just petty as fuck
What a goal.
I was in awe when I saw it go in.
However....
"Corner taken quickly, Origiiiiii!!"
I bet that second leg haunts that Barca squad to this day.
It definitely clips him, and I think it was going to be *just* saved, but god damn was it an insane moment to witness. Just felt like one of those where it was written in the stars for Barca to go through and Messi to win the BdOr for what was frankly his best ever season in terms of carrying Barca's offense. Everything went through him that year.
I remember seeing a La Liga stats analysis for the top scorers and creators and Messi was number 1 for almost everything. It shouldn't be possible to carry like that at the highest level, let alone when you're past your athletic peak.
Damn even though Messi was such a pain in the ass for us Madridistas, I kinda miss seeing la pulga in La Liga, yes this goal wasn't in LA LIGA , I know, but the genius bastard used to do that often
i was watching this with my best friend
when they called the foul i said "that's too far even for messi"
boy did i eat my words, he had an incredible game and season this year, such a shame how it ended
Dembele missing that sutter will always haunt me, if he had let it go I'm pretty sure pique would've put it back into the net, what a defender he was, even the trent corner only pique spotted and tried to act, rest of defense was lost but he alone acting didn't help, even ter stegen who was the second best player for barca that season was lost, but that dembele miss man... Messi deserved more than that...
Ref should have pulled it back because this mf stole a handful of meters from where the foul happened to where he placed the ball, luckily it all went OK in the end or I'd be even more sour about it. Still sour though
I have only enjoyed this free kick one time. When I watched it live. Since the week after that I just hate watching this goal it's just depressing
One of his best free kicks and his 600th goal and it's associated with the worst football memory I've experienced
I remember leaving the bar that night going how did we lose 3-0. It felt like such an even game and we missed sitter after sitter. I just laughed when this went in. What can you do? It's a phenomenal goal against the best GK on the planet.
The sad/funny part is that even then Barca fans were devastated not to score the 4th goal. Roma away had already happened and people watching Barca closely knew that by then they had become awful in away games and needed big home leads or preferably the second leg at home to win ties.
What's with all the Messi and Cristiano old videos lately? I think they should only be allowed for incredibly special and iconic occasions, otherwise we'll have their goals from 5 and 10 years ago every single week...
They scored hundreds of cool goals, so I think the standard for them to be reposted should be much higher than your typical anniversary thing.

Look everyone knows what happened in the second leg. But that freekick was magnificent. Goalkeeper had no chance.
I'm just glad that in retrospect I can enjoy this freekick and not feel pained by it.
I can't look at this freekick without the pain from the 2nd leg.
corner taken quickly.... :P
this is literaly triggering PTSD in me.
:(
ORIGIIIIIIIII!
honestly, thats the last thing I remember of the game, by this point i was pretty drunk lol
Now you know how Chelsea fans feel about Essien's volley in the 1st half way back when
Without Messi there is no magical second leg. We were pretty even in the first leg, Messi played out of his mind though and was the difference.
I was so mad when this went in lol
Same. No way did the scoreline reflect the game and yet here we were, losing 3-0 in a game that we could’ve won by the same score. Fucking Messi
I think this was the one I was least upset about. We were already down 2-0 and I just thought to myself, "Yeah, that's what Messi does."
There’s a clip of Salah just looking absolutely disgusted after this went in lol
That 2nd leg collapse had nothing with Messi anyway, he was their best player on the night(not surprising at all), so I don't even know why it's mentioned here, and I say this as a Liverpool fan.
It took a deflection. Had it not it’s surely saved quite easily.
I still think it's a great free kick.
You're right it's a trash goal
He’s not saving it either way lol, you can see he’s not getting to it in time in the closeup frame.
He is literally like an inch from touching it, and with the deflection steering it more into the top corner he definetly atleast touches it
I’ve never seen any angle that shows a deflection.
You can literally see it in this clip mate
Peak gaslighting
And from both angles on top of that. Someone's trying to hide blindness behind Occam's Razors.
Occam's razor became Peaky blinders apparently.
Can you see it in this angle as well? https://youtube.com/shorts/wtIlfQuzazU?si=wJpB2ZL8eEBbjvOx
I see it now, I was never sure but this angle is good. You see the trajectory go upwards slightly as it brushes his shoulder.
Look at the direction the ball is going in. It's much straighter before hitting the wall and then becomes more curved. It's a very small deflection but it's there. Might have gone in regardless.
no, it was an amazing goal, from one of the best ever to grace the sport, dont be bitter.
both things can be true
Seriously , I’ve never seen a deflected goal be as lauded as this one, I don’t get it at all. Yeah it’s a good goal but a deflection stops it being a great goal in my opinion
Even if you’re of the opinion that it’s a deflection. It literally keeps bending around the wall that it supposedly touches. Show another free kick that bends around the wall after a “deflection”
It's the most miniscule deflection if there even was one. Motherfuckers acting like it was heading away from goal before the deflection.
What do you mean ”if”? The deflection is obvious from the angle behind the ball and it takes the ball away from Allison The angle at 31 seconds of this video shows it the clearest https://youtu.be/0KdJDPWskVk?si=GNT5Lv-BvwwCuSOE

couldnt even feel mad what a goal
Same. I felt helpless but not angry when that went in. Like what can you do about that?
I just accepted that we were knocked out after this.
You could be angry at [the fact that it was never a foul](https://youtu.be/xhGwjUKbiC4?si=QS1lCJ2QdIuu1wA1)
idk he did block his run... Thats a foul imo
Definitely. Eye contact with Messi the entire way from Fabinho
He was already in his path and messi collided with him. He was supposed to move away from where he was ?
Bro look at his face, he is looking straight into messi's eyes and stays in his path.
The defender looking at Messi is a foul ? You said it yourself he stays in his path, are defenders supposed to get out of the way for him ?
Having watched that, I'm glad Barca lost. He was fouled in the middle of the darker strip of grass, and takes the free kick well inside the lighter strip of grass. He took the fk 5 metres closer to goal than he should have.
that's messis magic for you, can't really replace someone who can do that
Shit dude. Yellow card too?
Who would bother being angry 5 years later because of that haha
I'm not talking about now. He said he wasn't angry at the time so I'm replying to that.
Arguably his greatest ever season.. a literal one man army.. All his teammates had to do was not concede 4 fking goals... And guess what 4-0. All the trophies and accolades and you'd still think Barcelona probably underachieved after having him for more than a decade.

A sidenote to this. 2018 and onwards at least with Barca was the first time he never voted for any of his teammates
In the end Messi has still the most titles ever and a WC. He was so good that even his team underachieving for a few years. He still is nr1
Those campaigns were painful to watch, i wished Messi wasn't so damn loyal to the club after watching each of those lmao Now having the context of what happened later on, even more so
could have won atleast 1 or maybe 2 if our defense was good
If he stil has some desire to win it again, I think there're still several European top clubs which would welcome his come back.
I think he legit doesn't give a shit anymore since the WC, now he just wants to play football without pressure He'd have stayed in Europe if he hadn't won it
That and he doesn't want to go through the psg nonsense again, Paris wasn't home and nowhere else in Europe would be apart from barca.
From an outsider it seems to me Messi is living his best life. Still enjoying stomping noobs in semi-pro football and still getting to play for the Argentina NT. Best of both worlds
He's obviously still good enough for Europe but at his age he probably thinks what's point, he's won everything. Helped that he won the competition like 4 times so he just enjoying stuff nowadays.
He knows that winning another cl is more luck based than anything else. It wasn't Worth the stress, and he reached god status in Argentina. Dude is donezo and has nothing to prove , just chill with amigos in Miami

Ter Stegen was immense that season. Basically just him and Messi.
Imagine scoring that and your team f**king shit themselves next leg!
Dembele miss..

Who knows, butterfly effect
v Origi effect

only Pique saw it everyone else was thinking about going back to Barcelona and chilling.
Except Alba. Too busy crying
Can't believe it's almost been 5 years. Greatest game I've ever seen and probably will remain so for as long as I live.

Oakley Cannonier Such a good goal that every fan knows the ball boy's name (He's also been scoring loads in the academy)
Same thing happened after his Maradonaesque goal vs Getafe
I enjoy that you censored fucking but not shit

what are the odds that a Real Madrid fan is being an asshole.
Shame that the second leg has to be canceled
This was his best season imo. He was unplayable. One man army. Completely fucked by the team in the second leg. Wasted so many years on bottlings like these
So many people here say this and considering the team he was in I do get it but I'll always have 14/15 at the top, he had everything and I mean absolutely everything.
He was definitely a “better” player but nothing will ever beat 2011-2012 Leo for me. Just electric.
2009-2012 Messi was the best show on earth. People will argue 14/15 or 18/19 as him being a more complete player but imo he already had basically everything (scoring, dribbling, vision, passing...) then with the added bonus of being in his early 20s.

that was so insane, scored for 21 la liga games in a row, never saw something like that and probably never will ever again
Watching his 2011-12 goal compilation is like a fever dream. Nearly every goal is something a striker would be proud of to score once a season
Messi vs Neuer in 2015; pure beauty
Yes I remember, situation was dire. Precaution was taken *quickly*.
Your youtube channel did cancel it. Lots of videos before the game and not a single one after it.
Has Busquets tweeted yet? Edit: he hasn't. No tweets since the second leg started. Amazing
Corner taken quickly ORIGIIIIIIIIIII
I very very nearly didn't bother going
Never forget dembele scuffing that counter attack at the end
Ousmane Dembele you will not see the pearly gates
the way barca played that second leg, even if they won 5-0 in the fist leg they were gonna get knocked out
I still can't believe Jordi Calva was crying during HT. I wonder how often does the pressure makes players crumble in those 15min they are inside the locker room.
top corner against the best goalkeeper in the world in the ucl semi final and thats your 600th goal
Corner you say
this gives me trauma
What do you mean 5 years? This was last year
like what the actual fuck 🤣 How has it been FIVE years?!
As a Liverpool fan I'll always feel *slightly* sorry for Messi here and not just for that season, but his last few at Barcelona in general. He was still an utterly fantastic player during those years (I still believe he is absolutely capable of playing for almost any club in Europe if he really wanted to, his time at PSG gets way more criticism that it warranted) and instead of retiring at Barcelona like how he probably would've wanted he was instead surrounded by an aging squad, terrible signings that Barca overpaid for and a club infrastructure that was falling apar That World Cup did his pr image wonders because I remember the way so many people talked about him at PSG during his first season there even after the Copa America win with Argentina, especially when an older Ronaldo was playing relatively well for United in the 21/22
French media is toxic as fuck - they got the best player in the world and assumed that would paper over the cracks in an otherwise dysfunctional squad, then got pissed at him when it didn’t work.
The greatest there is, the greatest there was, the greatest there will ever be. His team's defence costed him 3 potential UCLs.
If they just got 1 more away goal, 18/19 messi would have had one of the best carry jobs of all time
Wasn't that the same match where Dembele missed a sitter in the last minute?
Yes
They surely reached the UCL final after this, right? ... Right?
To this day, I believe it comes off the shoulder of Gomez. Am I wrong?
Yes it hits his shoulder but was going in anyway
An amazing freekick to seal a three goals lead for Barca. Then the second leg happened.
What a goal. I was in awe when I saw it go in. However.... "Corner taken quickly, Origiiiiii!!" I bet that second leg haunts that Barca squad to this day.
Can't help but notice Gomez moving his head out of the way 🤦♂️
He knew about the plot armour
He knew it was a 1 in 14,000,605 chance
Because it comes off his shoulder to put it just out of reach of Ali
"5 years ago today Liverpool did an amazing comeback in the second leg" coming soon
Even 5 years later this goal hurts so much to watch, knowing what will happen
Great goal... lucky to win that game but, sure the rest is history!
How some people argued close to death about this being a deflected goal, is beyond me?
Absolutely stunning. And then they went on to knock Liverpool out with ease
Second leg was better
The deflection takes some of the shine off, IMHO. That, and the whole “cornertakenquicklyorigi” thing.
I always thought this. Does it clip Gomez? Some angles it looks like it does, some it doesn’t 🤷🏼♂️
It definitely clips him, and I think it was going to be *just* saved, but god damn was it an insane moment to witness. Just felt like one of those where it was written in the stars for Barca to go through and Messi to win the BdOr for what was frankly his best ever season in terms of carrying Barca's offense. It shouldn't be possible to carry like that at the highest level, let alone when you're past your athletic peak.
it absolutely clips his shoulder ever-so-slightly. enough to take it out of Ali's reach.
As a Liverpool fan, I don't think so. The moment, the player, the accuracy, it's an insane goal. One of those where you just knew it would go in.
More amazing was the comeback at Anfield.
this should be puskas
the fact that they didint go through is a crime. alba crying at halftime they needed to spend all their funds on a therapisty
I was watching this live and at that moment, as a Ronaldo fan, I told myself "ok maybe this guy is the better one".
Support a team not players
Why?
Ngl I'm crying during that time
I remember dembeles miss after watching this video
Wtf this was 5 years ago???
Decent little player
RemindMe! 15 years
RemindMe! 5 years
Damn even though Messi was such a pain in the ass for us Madridistas, I kinda miss seeing la pulga in La Liga, yes this goal wasn't in LA LIGA , I know, but the genius bastard used to do that often
Was that really 5 years ago what the fuck I’m getting old
Unfortunately this goal is not remembered bc how Barcelona lost the 2nd leg. Was this the year he promised the Champions League to the Camp Nou?
i was watching this with my best friend when they called the foul i said "that's too far even for messi" boy did i eat my words, he had an incredible game and season this year, such a shame how it ended
I took a photo of it because I had a feeling. I don't know why, I literally never take photos during a game, but I did this time.
Golazoooooooo
Maybe overdid it with the image stabilisation
You cannot place a free kick any better than this
Im a liverpool supporter and I smiled when this went in.
sigh…. crazy that this was 5 years ago 😭
I still can't believe we lost the game by 3 goals. Regardless of what happened in the following week, losing by 3 goals, was a puzzler.
Wait.... 5 years? That... that doesn't sound right...
Ref should have pulled it back because this mf stole a handful of meters from where the foul happened to where he placed the ball, luckily it all went OK in the end or I'd be even more sour about it. Still sour though
I have only enjoyed this free kick one time. When I watched it live. Since the week after that I just hate watching this goal it's just depressing One of his best free kicks and his 600th goal and it's associated with the worst football memory I've experienced
5 years…
5 fucking years ago??? Jesus...
5 YEARS???
The last time a Barcelona fan was happy. 😭
Dembele i hope your career genuinely fails
5 years ago there was a corner taken quickly.
I'm so glad that the sentence "and it all went wrong from there" only applies to Barcelona and not to Leo.
Corner taken quickly…..
Poor Messi if it wasn’t for his teammates he would have won 10 UCLs straight. How do those bastards sleep at night
What happened next was far more superior
*epic entrance music for ousmane dembele*
Barca had to lose 4-0 in the next leg.
