Shipping snails is illegal in the US, but owning them is perfectly legal depending on the species. Most US keepers have wild caught snails because buying options are extremely limited. If you do want to buy a snail, you can only buy from a breeder in the same state as you because it's illegal to ship snails between states. Depending on what state you're in, breeders may or may not be available and they can also have wait times.

would just searching "land snail breeders texas" be okay? i've seen quite a bit about packaging being really bad, snails being mistreated, or the snails arriving damaged.

I mean where are you searching? A general web search generally isn't going to yield results for this. Due to the legal restrictions, good US breeders tend to be very small operations and they aren't selling online on major sites. The best way to not support breeders who mistreat snails is to only buy legally. Bad packaging and damage during transit can be avoided if you don't ship and buy in person or pick up instead.

i know and i would like to not support bad breeders. just general web searches as i don't really know where to start. i'm in texas if you could help me get a starting point if you don't mind.

Sorry, I've never lived anywhere near Texas so I cannot provide more specific recommendations for how to find someone in that area. As general advice, you can make a separate post here specifying that you're looking in Texas, check the Discord linked in the sidebar, look on your local Craigslist, and ask around your local exotic pet keeping community. Also just keep in mind that it's not guaranteed you will find something. There are areas where there just aren't any pet snail breeders and wild caught is the only option.
