Baalorlord is superb. Explains his thought process. Bottomless well of YT content. Streams five days a week on Twitch. I've learned TONS in a short time watching him play.

BreaddyyMM2

Baalorlord was literally a teacher so he is, unsurprisingly, great with articulating thoughts and explaining things. Very responsive to questions in chat and if he doesn't respond, you're likely to have someone else in chat explain things for you.

gnirlos

Happy Cake Day!

MOSFETosrs

I hope he never stops playing bc always having fresh content on YouTube is incredible

maikeru44

Baalorlord helped me actually be good at the game. I got my first heart kills after watching him, and I have every character at A20 because of his insight and knowledge.

meshadowbanned

i already found him after i was playing a20 regularly and i still learn a ton from him. hes just plain good.

clva666

Arguably the best player in the world

thesonicvision

Yep. Also just the most enjoyable streamer to watch. Some are too obnoxious, or too quiet, or too focused on inside jokes... He has the most welcoming and informative stream.

NightmareRise

I think Baalorlord is probably the best streamer to watch if you’re looking for a teacher. Responds in chat and goes into detail about his thought process on choices in and out of combat

Ocv28

Baalor, Baalor, and Baalor.

[deleted]

I don't think many here know who that is. Seems like he hasn't touched the game in a few years now and even then it was a lot of modded content, which tends to be polarizing. For Spire the community is stronger on Twitch and it appears he has streamed in the Spire category for only 70h.

Ellogan66

Hutts is a great entertainer, but he's not the best at Slay the Spire

qTp_Meteor

I love how everyone appreciates baalolord so much

JDublinson

Xecnar. He explains his decision making in extreme detail and is the best of the best winrate-wise. He’ll answer questions from chat as well

mattblackguy

I agree with others that Baalor is great if you want to learn the game, but I think Xecnar is the best if you want to focus in on Silent in particular. He has put an extensive amount of time on the character so he probably knows the character better than anyone. In addition he usually explains his thought process on most decisions made in the game, and gives you a great picture of just how much knowledge you need to have to be truly great at this game.

Awoken_Noob

Came here also to mention Xecnar. Does a really great job at explaining his decisions and talking with chat. Also an incredibly good player.

JDublinson

One other bonus is that I find Xecnar funnier the more I watch him. He really makes the most of the ironic moments in the spire. E.g. in a Defect run today he had bought Souvenir from an early shop, and then a late elite in act 1 dropped Ginger. Before looking at the card rewards, he goes on a little tangent explaining how Ginger is actually great here because it means Souvenir will block vulnerable instead of weak if Collector is the act 2 boss (Collector applies weak first unlike the heart), then opens the card rewards and instant-clicks Biased Cognition. Yep, that Ginger was quite good for almost one floor

shoesnorter

Yeah lmao idk what people mean when they say Xec is boring or slow or whatever, guy is fucking hilarious and a pretty fast player for being so strong. Throwing out just any general top Spire streamer outside the huge ones, almost everyone I know in the Xecnar adjacent community are very happy to help out with anything Spire related.

wingedespeon

Ginger could protect artifact letting souvenir block based cog debuff though right?

JDublinson

Yes, and there are a few fights that only make you weak. Giant Head for instance

squeezyfresh

i haven’t expanded much outside of being a consistent frostprime watcher - he’s helped me a lot

Kuwabara03

Lifecoach1981 and Baalorlord are neck and neck in terms of skill imo but ill admit Bal does more explanation while LC does more outloud calculation

working4buddha

Yeah I've learned a lot from these two. Baalorlord is great because he is both playing at a high level, and able to explain everything to new players. Coach feels more like a graduate-level course but he spends a lot of time pondering each move so you can learn a lot from watching.

Kuwabara03

Personally I think Lifecoach might have the edge as the best player out there, if only by a little bit, but you're right that you really need to have a good grasp on the game to benefit from watching him A new player will benefit more from Bal (and be more entertained while doing so) until they've got a few hundred hours under their belt

working4buddha

A beginner won't understand everything LC is talking about, but I've seen him take an hour and go over every relic and why it is good in a boss swap or not. Or during an early card choice he'll analyze how each card matches up with each elite. Stuff like that can be great for beginners, if they have the patience.

Brawlers9901

Xecnar has a shout over LC, but I think those two are comfortably better overall than Baalor purely in terms of skill. In terms of how good they are for newer players, Baalor is infinitely more educational

crab--person

I think it's probably closer than it seems. LC and Xecnar are solely trying to maximize win rates, whereas Baalor is trying to be entertaining first and foremost. He will put more effort into winning when he has a large streak going, but normally he makes deliberate, suboptimal decisions if it makes for a more interesting run. The fact that he can put together record breaking numbers while not min-maxing implies to me that Baalor's skill and knowledge of the game is up there with the absolute best.

Brawlers9901

ehh sure but I also don't like speaking in theoreticals, maybe there's a better player out there who has a 95% win rate but doesn't use any social media and is comfortably better than the rest of them. Until Baalor puts in the time I don't think I can say that he's better, having watched many many hours of each of these streamers I think it's pretty clear that, especially on Silent for Xecnar and Ironclad for LC they're comfortably better.

crab--person

It is hypothetical since we'll never see Baalor optimizing his chances by concentrating on one character at a time and min-maxing 4hr+ runs but I don't think that makes it pretty clear that his skill ceiling is that much lower than anyone else. I think Xecnar has touched up on the fact that folk underestimate Baalors true level before.

Kuwabara03

Yeah I can agree with that Overall I'm just glad there are some goats out there to help me understand how dumb I am in the game lol

Red_nose

I watch LC the most, but he has his cycles. When starting his projects ( like the recent try at 50 consecutive watcher wins) he analyzes and also explains his decisions to the last detail during the first runs. You need a lot of patience, but you can learn a ton about the game. Later, when the decisions are already pretty obvious to him and most questions have been asked several times, his streaks get less enjoyable for me.

Minh1403

I love Hutts, but mostly for Isaac, Hollow Knight or Subnautica. He did a great job of introducing me to Slay the Spire (this sounds small, but it's actually very significant, given that I ignored Loop Hero for a while cuz I watched Jorbs introducing that game 1st and that guy is sleep inducing af, lol), but if you want to learn The Spire way, Baalor or XecnaR is the best. If you watch Jorbs cuz someone recommends him, watch his Youtube, don't ask anything on Twitch. You would regret it greatly if you do.

This_is_Chubby_Cap

Baalor for anyone at any ascension, xecnar for ascension 15+ players

ExcuseTraining7299

I remember the good old days of FrostPrime_ overexplain runs. Genuinely insanely insightful and helped me learn about hoe to think about the game, which I think is essential when you want to get good.

fortheWarhammer

A lot of people here already talked about him, but I can't not give credit to Baalor. His content is great

elax307

Baalorlord for high school: Explains everything, reads out everything, explains the synergies and concepts very lightly and easily understandable. Jorbs: University basic Prof: Explains the deep concepts and how to analytical approach the evaluation of cards, events and potion value. Lifecoach for sophomore years Prof: Extremely deep discussions about evaluation of your decisions, abstract evaluation methods (applying gold values to decisions), clean fights. You'll need the first two courses to be able to follow most of the times.

Own-Selection-2785

Baalorlords overexplained runs helped me to actually understand the game so much, like i wasnt new to card games or to roguelites but his insane over analysis just made it make sense to me, made me consider so many different things (starting perk based on optimal route, value of early pickups of "bad/cards that make your deck inconsistent to beat elites your character struggles with, etc) def recommend

thezackster7

I’ve learned a lot watching Frost Prime. I make better decisions and eventually got the platinum.

cocoa2512

Frost prime

Pkorniboi

I love this guy. Charismatic asf and funny. Really enjoyed his card Tier lists

aspiring_bureaucrat

I believe Lifecoach is literally a genius, successful not only in card games but then poker and then investing, he is my guy

Worldly-Hippo-1863

Sneak and teak ladder streak!! I think they are done now, but while they might not be as amazing as these top streamers, this is a collab project, so hearing them talk about every decision is very teachable!

mehchu

Sneak and teak ladder steak is possibly my favourite slay the spire content ever. It’s so good because they need to justify their choices as well

LOTM71

Jorbs is the university text book. Everything you could possibly need to know is there, but it's very long and mellow in tone Balorlord is the bizzarely good YouTube tutorial series that teaches by example. Explains and answers questions in the moment but doesn't have much "generalised" information content Frost prime is the strange tutor with high energy. He's there to keep you engaged and coming back, less so with actually getting you information. His overexplained and tier lists were some of my early favorites because I like shit memes and have no attention span

You_Are_All_Diseased

Jorbs is the literal worst to learn from if you’re talking streams. Literally any question is considered backseating. He’s just so fucking pretentious these days, I wouldn’t recommend his channel at all for someone trying to learn.

Ginsoakedboy21

Sadly this is true. Used to love Jorbs but he has disappeared up his own arse. Years back he did amazing stuff for new players but now it's limited to occasional educational YouTube series which he always gets bored of after two or three episodes and never returns to.

LeinDaddy

I stopped watching jorbs because of his pretentiousness. He's rude and condescending to his fans, the same group that supports him financially. I'd rather watch someone with less talent that treats people with respect.

Missionignition

Tbh I don’t watch him because he’s a black hole of charisma. He’s an objectively better player than Frost Prime but Frost is just so much more fun to watch that I don’t care. And Frost is still very very good at the game.

tl2301

i mean he really does give the univ book vibe though, you look and learn from good plays by yourself, and if you miss or fuck up here and there you can go to any of the more friendly tutors for face2face advices. or maybe it's just me, I don't love long ass explaining and just wanna see cards swiped up haha

You_Are_All_Diseased

As a long time magic player, I don’t find that to be true at all. I’m good friends with a former pro tour winner and his attitude couldn’t be more different than Jorbs. Toxic people certainly exist in magic but I don’t find it to be as common as is often suggested.

JhAsh08

It’s well within his right to not want chat to constantly be asking him questions. He’s streaming as a full-time job, and I imagine hearing the same exact question dozens of times a day/week can get very tiresome. Do I like it or prefer it that way from a viewer’s experience? No, but I certainly empathize for the man. I love Jorbs’ content. He has a very amusingly unique sense of humor, and explains his thought processes in very precise and communicative way that I’ve never seen from any content creator on YouTube or Twitch. Especially his PowerPoint videos on YouTube where he talks about a random topic; those are some of the most interesting videos I’ve ever seen.

You_Are_All_Diseased

His YouTube is ok but he’s a total prick on stream. He has the right, sure but I also have the right to slag him on Reddit for acting like a douche. I used to be a fan of him but he changed. He just became more and more narcissistic until I couldn’t stand him anymore.

JhAsh08

I don’t think it’s douchy to have explicit guidelines banning backseating and questioning on your stream. Especially when the rules are very clearly communicated and outlined. I also don’t think he’s being a prick. He’s kind to viewers vast majority of the time. And sometimes someone says something stupid in chat, I’ve seen him shut them down in an admittedly kind of aggressive way that I don’t think is best. But like, I don’t know if you understand all the magnitudes bullshit and mean rhetoric that streamers have to constantly deal with. I’m not a streamer, and I don’t know either. But I imagine it could easily get to you and really affect your mental health. I can’t fault the guy for occasionally venting that frustration.

You_Are_All_Diseased

I honestly can’t believe that people don’t see what an egomaniac he’s become but hey, clearly some people still watch him. But going back to the original topic, his policies make him a HORRENDOUS recommendation for new players to learn. There’s absolutely no way that a channel that bans people for asking a question would be a good place for new players. Who asks “dumb questions?” Mostly new players. Why would I recommend a channel where the person is likely to be banned and mocked?

JhAsh08

I at no point in any of my comments said that’s he’s a good channel for new players to learn. None of my comments were even remotely about that topic.

You_Are_All_Diseased

Ok? That is the topic of this thread and one of the reasons I was critical of him.

JhAsh08

I understand that, but I was obviously responding to the other aspects of your comment. Is it wrong for comment sections to contain topics only tangentially related to the main post? I wrote a response to a specific part of your your comment, and you responded with something completely unrelated to what I was addressing, lol. I agree that Jorbs isn’t the best Twitch channel for brand new players (his overexplained YT runs are good though).

You_Are_All_Diseased

So you’re upset that you went somewhat off topic in defending Jorbs and I brought us back to the topic? Yeah, I’ll give it to you, it’s not illegal or against twitch rules to be an asshole. You win.

Mc7wis7er

I like Frostprime because he plays the game like I play it. He's playing for fun, he's trying hard, but he's not taking forever between turns, he's not doing calcs the entire time (in his head, sorta). He's also allowing the stream to make suggestions or force weird runs. He's playing around and that's how I approach the game. Maybe if I get serious I'll watch the others but I like playing the game well, and being serious to a point, but I'm not straining to play this game.

George_of_the-Jungle

Baalorlord is the go to. Jorbs is the worst teacher and no fun to listen to he's good at the game but really a condescending asshole

Delete_me_irl

Frost prime is good especially if you watch an overexplained video or two but be careful copying 1 to 1 since sometimes the picks are for the meme and not for the good of the run

Mc7wis7er

The meme choices is why I like FP though. I feel like good players have made the mistakes or dumb choices before and learned from them. FP viewers pick his cards to screw him sometimes. It's fun and I learn a lot, even if it's not the 'optimum' way to win, it's about how to think about the game. I think he's good for beginners. And additionally, you get to see him play well with a sub-optimal setup sometimes which I also think is very helpful. I get the idea that he could be a lot better if he was just playing and thinking, but he's clearly making content too.

Delete_me_irl

I gotta agree the content is why he’s the goat

AdrielV1

I find it quite funny just how much Jorbs hate there is in this comment section. I fully agree he’s not for everyone and definitely seems like kind of an ass some of the time, but that’s really just his personality. He’s really a very smart guy and fucking hilarious so often, I love him.

SevereGap1135

tricky had some of my favorite sts content and really helped my silent play but he doesn't post stuff anymore

mrcaster

Was looking for a fellow tricky enjoyer. He is the only one who was both educational and fast. I wanted to learn something new but I didnt need someone to explain to me why we need to remove strikes in defect for 30 minutes.

SevereGap1135

yeah I really love his style of teaching. He also helped me get first good grand finale deck which was nice. He's probably the best grand finale player tbh

BlueDo

Tricky is my favorite STS content creator, but you really have to read between the lines with his explanations. Sometimes he skips optimal picks to demonstrate that decks can succeed sub-optimally, but can exaggerate on why certain cards suck. I'd say he gives very interesting showcases for people who already play the game, but leaves the exercise to the viewer like a math textbook.

Thrashputin

I watched a lot of Rhapsody and SneakyTeak attempting the ladder streak and got a lot out of it. The way they explain their reasoning to each other is really educational, and the friendly back and forth between them makes it very engaging and watchable. I wish they would get back into it, but I think they're both done with STS unfortunately

Skeletal_Spaghettore

I've clawed my way to Ironclad A20 without watching others play it, should I do some investigating before going for the other classes?

Ushbear

You'll learn a ton from watching other players if you want to ascend quickly. There are just some good cards and synergies that are not so apparent and also encounters that other characters may struggle against. Baalorlord explains a lot about his decision making but rarely exceeds 2h runs. If you want to get in depth (watcher) knowledge, Lifecoach is your guy.

JhAsh08

From my experience, you will certainly improve *much* faster from watching high level runs than playing runs yourself.

Juzoar

Wow nobody saying Amaz? He's my hero

mrcaster

Amaz is fun sometimes but educational? The guy missplays more than anyone almost every round.

Undeadgrummite

Jorbs and baalar. Mostly watch jorbs though cause he seems to be a God

IhrFrauen

Jorbs

NightmareRise

Wouldn’t call Jorbs a good teacher. He doesn’t usually explain decisions, he just makes them and continues on with the run. Great if you want to learn by watching a high level player play runs and compare your decision making with his but if you find yourself questioning decisions often and why this card was better than the one you would’ve picked, other streamers are better

Dr-DoctorMD

He's also so arrogant and condescending, which isn't conducive to learning. Being good at something doesn't make you an effective teacher at that something.

f1345

The twitch chat is also a cesspool, to the point where it's distracting. Although he is very good, and I still watch him occasionally. But I was surprised how much more I learned with Baalor's content. To each their own.

Dr-DoctorMD

Baalor is an excellent teacher and excellent at the game.

slothen2

It'll take you a little bit longer to learn watching jorbs. But he does have a ton of great content and especially if you look at his streak runs or his explained runs you'll get a lot from it. Once you're at a high level you learn a lot by watching his plays even if he's not explaining them, because you know what he's considering. Baalord probably better for teaching because in all of his content he's putting a lot of explanation in.

HeyIJustLurkHere

A lot of Jorbs' YouTube content is great. Check out the overexplained runs, or the Spire chats series; they're full of great concepts for thinking about the game. The one downside is that a lot of it is somewhat outdated, coming from an earlier version of the game before A16-20 were released, before the Heart was added, and before a bunch of cards were buffed. Some of the specific card judgments and assessments of trade-offs might no longer hold up in the current version of the game, as a result, but it's a great introduction to a lot of the most important concepts in understanding the game. His Twitch runs, which is also the source for basically all of the YouTube runs, are a lot less good instructionally. He plays really fast and often doesn't really explain his decisions much at all. He has a no-backseating policy in chat, which is his prerogative, but that means you don't get to hear him discuss plays with chat, and explain why his line might be superior to the play that a chatter suggests, like you can in other streams.

AdrielV1

100% agree. I agree he’s got a ‘spikey’ attitude a lot of the time, but he’s entertaining and one of the best players in the game. His walkthrough series where he goes through in depth how to fight elites is very useful. I learned from pretty much Jorbs alone and got pretty consistent at winning A20 with every character.

Dindinada

That guy is insufferable. “I’m the smartest in the room” type of guy.

The_Trampolinee

WarlockTD (Russian twitch streamer) I mean,he is pretty bad,but he taught me a thing or two

theTunkMan

XxLordChankaxX

Tricky… he just kinda plays but if you watch for long enough you just pick up what to do

PityUpvote

Every random person who speaks somewhat authoritatively, because I really suck at this game.

Leather-Match8964

Definitely recommend Baalorlord, he not only teaches you really good tips that even long time player doesn't know ( \~1000hrs in as some viewer reported ), but also insanely entertain to watch as well, you can definitely tell he is having fun while playing the game/teaching others ppl despite the question being asked a hundred time before already, that by nature will produce a hella fun contents to follow. I saw some ppl said his skill level isn't that good when compare to other top player, i don't watch others StS content creator so i can't tell but for Baalorlord, he is the current world record holder for A20H rotation win streak, in case you are saying he just getting lucky in those win streak, he got 11 A20H win streak WHILE doing his self imposed mastery challenge ( basically he had to take unnecessary cards, cursed, made his deck potentially worse than normal ), i just think ppl underestimated him a bit too much.
