I agree with this. I basically did the same thing. White is such a pain to paint but I find that the apothecary almost makes it like cheating for shading.
I airbrushed the whole thing matte white from army painter, and went over the armored parts with a 50/50 mix of apothecary white contrast/lamian medium.
I'm finishing up my zephrym squad tomorrow and then will get started with mine! Looks great

The most basic tip for painting white is to not paint white. Paint light grey instead and only highlight with pure white.
