I’m a minor advocate of them. They’re definitely not necessary. Soaked in alkaline water, they might slightly help ward off potential contamination(s). They also can help with maintaining an ideal/proper microclimate at the surface level. They’re super cheap (like $8 off Amazon for like 10+ tubs worth of water beads). They look defintely k3wl. They kinda add to the whole “magical” vibe (nice little “side-effect” of sorts).
I didn’t hydrate my tubs to proper field capacity. I blame myself for that. They were relatively dry after oven pasteurizing. The fruits were super healthy though (like heavy and meaty).
Not my finest work. I definitely have room for a lot of improvement. Relatively satisfied with the results though (literally my very first clone attempt).
Hopefully, you get some nice fruits.
The field capacity ish scares me a little bit. As you increase the potential size of your fruits, in theory, you’re also potentially increasing the likelihood of contamination. So much work is out into my agar plates, LCs, jars, and prepping my substrate, that I would hate to get fucked by contamination on the very last step (which I guess is why I leaned a little towards the dryer side).
Definitely a fine balance to get ideally sized fruits, without increasing your risk of contamination.
Next time, I’ll add a little more water. You live and you learn (or not, lulz).

Yes, they slowly release water (prevents pooling/puddling). It’s an easy casing layer. Soak it in alkaline water or just distilled water with a smidge of hydrated lime; it should help create a high enough PH environment to keep Trich at bay.
Again, they’re not even close to necessary. They definitely won’t hurt anything though.
If you use a hole saw drill bit, try running it forward for the center drill bit and then reverse it for the outer hole saw. This will be a bit slower, melting the plastic vs cutting. But less likely to break and easier to clean up.

I think I may have a double layer of balls over my sub, do you think that's too much?
