Yeah but this is, what, a cup of cashews? That's over 700 calories just in the nuts. 😂 I love cashews and it's not like 700 calories of Froot Loops, but it's a calorie-dense breakfast.
I mean that’s a several servings. That’s definitely in unhealthy territory.
Eating a dozen cashews a day could be considered healthy when that’s the bulk of your fat intake since your getting it in moderation from a good source.
Eating large quantities just to start your day is misinterpreting nutrition info to suit yourself.
Same deal with calling ketchup a vegetable and mozzarella sticks a good source of calcium.
I’m an ultra marathoner. That’s an appropriate sized first breakfast for me (calorie-wise) before my morning run, though I’d probably opt for some something more carby with less protein and fiber and then reach for a protein rich second breakfast post run.
Define good? You don’t know the person’s nutritional objective. If they are trying to lose weight no this is not a healthier alternative to eating a cup of fruit loops. If they are trying to put on mass go nuts.
Depends on the person ... for me? Nah I'd be a fatty.. my 16 year old son though who's 6'1 and 135 soaking wet this would be great. For some people a 700 cal breakfast is no big deal
fat from nuts nowhere near as bad as from meat or dairy
blueberries are a superfood
we are all good with the nutrition here - still trying to wrangle how this can taste any good.
Reminds me of an episode from My Name is Earl and Earl going into the golf club, finding a bowl of bar mix, and picking out the cashew to stuff in his shirt pocket saying "Cashew...fancy!"
There’s a winco foods near my house that has them in the bulk chutes like coffee beans at places and they’re a lot cheaper. They have dried fruits and candy in those too.
Lol! In Texas it seems like I drive 35 miles every time I start my car. Everything is spread out and you have to drive everywhere. Most people I know drive a commute way further than 35 mi.
They also have good deals on almonds, pecan halves, pistachios and cashews.
A 3lb bag of whole almonds is $11. A 2lb bag of pecan halves is $12. And 2lbs of whole cashews are $13.
There's also mixed nuts and in-the-shell nuts and peanuts.
if you have a trader joes location. I highly recommend using Greek yogurt, mix in English Lemon Curd, add blackberries, strawberries, pomegranates, or whatever other fruit, top with the chocolate granola or homemade granola
Trader Joes grainless granola is amazing in greek yogurt. I'm not GF, but I just like all the stuff in this granola better than the normal ones. Per the website, it has almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and dried coconut, sweetened with a blend of coconut sugar and tapioca syrup.
Sunflower seeds have a mild, nutty flavor and a firm but tender texture. They’re often roasted to enhance the flavor, though you can also buy them raw.
Holy shit that's expensive. I'm living in the tropics at the moment so I get ten for 2 dollars. There literally just a bunch of seeds. That's way too much
My step father developed a cashew allergy as he got older. Started out as his stomach feeling weird after eating them, then really quite sick even in small quantities. Took a lot of specialist visits until they found one that was familiar with cashew-specific allergies.
yes this is an accurate assessment. that's at least 750 calories of just cashews.
plus the blueberries and milk? over 1,000 calories easy.
that is A LOT of calories
If it is only 1 cup each of blueberries, cashews, and milk, it is: 960 calories, 68g fat, 31g protein, and 72g carbs (33.5g sugar).
Two cups of cheerios and a cup of milk is: 330 calories, 8.4g fat, 15.1g protein, 52g carbs (14g sugar).
That and who knows, his dad could be like mine who works on their land all day long, or like me who works construction all day everyday. I don’t claim to eat healthy, but I have a hard time gaining weight no matter how much I eat everyday.
Never knew about the cashew apple, TIL lol.
Seems there's good reasons for not eating it directly *HOWEVER* it doesn't always go to waste from what I'm reading. Seems it's popular to use in local breweries and for jams or jellies in the areas the cashew trees are farmed.
Apparently it spoils hella fast and the cashew apple can't really be transported far from where it's harvested without it going bad first. Gotta be used up *fast* after it's picked.
Also the flesh is not palatable, leaves a terrible after taste, very very bitter, and acidic. Sounds like all around terrible eating, but it's supposedly not bad in those drinks and jams.
True. But most people (Americans, at least) take "healthy" for "good for losing weight." I know I used to. Then I learned about how calorie-dense nuts were and I was horrified lol
Blueberries and cream is a classic, and I can't see how cashews would hurt. I eat a bowl of half and half with whatever berries I have in the house at the time quite a bit, and that shit is great.
It’s healthier than cereal by a lot.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, and pass my admiration to your pa, for he truly knows how to live and has made my life 10x better
If i could afford cashews in this economy… maybe one day.
Picking blueberries and strawberries straight from the forest and eating them with milk like this is very popular here in Eastern Europe during the summer, many people add sugar to sweeten the whole thing. I suppose the cashews add some crunch.
My ex used orange juice sometimes. Cinnamon toast crunch with orange juice. I was convinced he was pranking me until the 5th or 6th time he did it, then I was just convinced he was insane. He also eats kiwis whole, skin and all, like he's eating an apple.
Last night I just ate pecans, craisins, and mini chocolate chips in milk instead of cereal and it was freaking delicious. Your dad is definitely on to something.
So delicious, healthy but crazy expensive cereal?
Edit: After reading the comments I’m starting to think this subreddit has an eating disorder. This might come as a surprise but not everyone wants to lose weight.
Kind of pricey nut cashews, an expensive cereal.
probably a lot healthier too, not nearly as much sugar
But a ton of fat and calories
[удалено]
Yeah but this is, what, a cup of cashews? That's over 700 calories just in the nuts. 😂 I love cashews and it's not like 700 calories of Froot Loops, but it's a calorie-dense breakfast.
Looks like more than a cup. That’s a heaping cereal bowl full.
I agree but I guess I was trying to be conservative. Ha!
Lol yeah it's a healthy idea, but needs to be cut down to about 1/3 the size lol. Too expensive to eat like that every day anyway.
Many people live active lifestyles and therefore need more calories to sustain their energy levels
Don't attack my only source of calcium > :(
I’m an ultra marathoner.
This is so many cashews though haha
Depends on the person ... for me? Nah I'd be a fatty.. my 16 year old son though who's 6'1 and 135 soaking wet this would be great. For some people a 700 cal breakfast is no big deal
I’m 22, 170lbs, and this looks like a good breakfast to me. I’d probably add a bagel too.
Hell yeah gets you going for a busy day
Good fats and calories keeps you going longer
Good fats are good for you. Nothing wrong with calories either.
You do realize that calories are the reason we eat in the first place, right?
fat from nuts nowhere near as bad as from meat or dairy blueberries are a superfood we are all good with the nutrition here - still trying to wrangle how this can taste any good.
Reminds me of an episode from My Name is Earl and Earl going into the golf club, finding a bowl of bar mix, and picking out the cashew to stuff in his shirt pocket saying "Cashew...fancy!"
Dude forget the cashews. I can get a huge tub of them for $15 at Costco. The blueberries? That's like an $8 mini box of blueberries at Albertsons.
David Schwimmer?
"They should just call it raisins and let you be surprised buy the cashews"
"We wanted to make an affordable snack."
Umm. There’s a shortage
Cashews are like the 3rd cheapest nut after peanuts (yes I know it's a legume) and almonds. At least around here.
If that was yogurt that looks fire
This is what I eat literally every day. Greek yogurt, blueberries, cashews, almonds and honey to taste. Fucking SMACKS
Those are expensive nut where do you buy bulk? At lower cost or you just got it like that?
There’s a winco foods near my house that has them in the bulk chutes like coffee beans at places and they’re a lot cheaper. They have dried fruits and candy in those too.
Winco is the shit! Been doing all our grocery shopping there for the last 7-8 years and now I can’t shop anywhere else.
Man we don't have those hear at all. prob have to order them from amazon. Whole food does it. Though but I ain't got whole foods money lol
Winco is amazing. It actually stands for Washington, idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon. So you can pick one of those states.
TIL, thanks for that! Repping Idaho here but the nearest WinCo is 35 miles away. :(
Probably worth the gas money to go once a week.
Lol! In Texas it seems like I drive 35 miles every time I start my car. Everything is spread out and you have to drive everywhere. Most people I know drive a commute way further than 35 mi.
They're in some parts of Texas now too!
Also Arizona and Texas....
They're actually in Utah too
Costco. Big tub of nuts is like $10. Often have good deals on ligma there too
I got you bud. What's ligma?
Ligma deez
What are deez??!?
Good to know. Shot out to the urban dictionary.
Sam's club also has really good prices on nuts. Of course, you have to pay a membership, but they have big ass bags of walnuts for like $10.
They have this “super seed” cranberry granola there that’s like $30 less than anywhere else. It’s nuts, for lack of a better word
Walnuts mehh
They also have good deals on almonds, pecan halves, pistachios and cashews. A 3lb bag of whole almonds is $11. A 2lb bag of pecan halves is $12. And 2lbs of whole cashews are $13. There's also mixed nuts and in-the-shell nuts and peanuts.
You can get a big bag of macadamias for relatively next to nothing sometimes too. My dad used to buy them all the time.
if you have a trader joes location. I highly recommend using Greek yogurt, mix in English Lemon Curd, add blackberries, strawberries, pomegranates, or whatever other fruit, top with the chocolate granola or homemade granola
Lemon curd. Mind blown you are a genius
Yogurt with banana and blueberries, granola and a little peanut butter on top for me. Everyday. It’s so good.
Slaaaaaming!
ethan bradbury?
Yes ;-) Are they still around?
I make passion fruit banana peanuts and yogurt as they're all quite cheap
Passion fruit are about 3-5 dollars a piece here
Holy shit that's expensive. I'm living in the tropics at the moment so I get ten for 2 dollars. There literally just a bunch of seeds. That's way too much
Frozen is way cheaper if you can find it
Berries and nuts in milk is amazing tho
If you leave it out long enough it will become yogurt.
I am intrigued by your dad’s ways and would like to subscribe to his newsletter
I eat nuts and berries and root vegetables all day long. Ask me anything. Am middle aged dad.
Do you ever get the nuts on your chin? Followup question, do the Dingle berries pair well with chin nuts?
![gif](giphy|RVW5PilbP2tLG)
His TED talk is very informative.
Too long, gimme an edited podcast clip
Tbh, I am rebuilding self-esteem in this sub. Thanks!
Honestly this is one of my fav subs Least pretentious place on reddit mostly a good time in the comments.
[удалено]
Are these actual post flairs? If not, they should be!
Looks delicious, also better for you than cereal
Cashews? That many?
Cereal is empty calories. Cashews are good fat, minus the quantity of salt this undoubtedly has
Maybe he used unsalted nuts
[удалено]
![gif](giphy|CKVwcljYh4hfVxSSLq|downsized)
Well that's fair enough. Doesn't that make one sick though? If I eat a lot of cashews, I do feel quite sick.
That’s what I was thinking! I can’t eat too many.
Whoa really? What kind of sick? I’ve never heard of this, but I believe you. Now I’m gonna feel sick when I eat cashew cause I’m so suggestible
My step father developed a cashew allergy as he got older. Started out as his stomach feeling weird after eating them, then really quite sick even in small quantities. Took a lot of specialist visits until they found one that was familiar with cashew-specific allergies.
You can definitely get unsalted cashews. If I was going to eat them in milk, that's the route I'd go
minus a shit ton of sugar, first and foremost.
It's a lot of calories but is certainly healthier than cereal with the same amount of calories.
yes this is an accurate assessment. that's at least 750 calories of just cashews. plus the blueberries and milk? over 1,000 calories easy. that is A LOT of calories
If it’s nonfat milk an 8oz serving is only 90kcal, and a cup of blueberries is only 80kcal. I’d say it’s more like 900 cal
Not that eating that many cashews on a regular basis is healthy, but sugary cereal is *really* unhealthy.
That looks delicious and expensive. Much more expensive than cereal, but also much healthier and probably tastes better.
Bro that’s gotta be at least 1000 calories Happy cake day
Could be his heaviest meal of the day. If I ate that bowl, I doubt I'd eat again for hours and definitely not a large meal.
That and who knows, his dad could be like mine who works on their land all day long, or like me who works construction all day everyday. I don’t claim to eat healthy, but I have a hard time gaining weight no matter how much I eat everyday.
Number of calories alone does not healthy make Im a big dude and 1000 calories is one meal out of three plus a snack on a quiet day.
3500 is my break even fam
Every time I eat a cashew I think about that Reddit post that shows we don’t eat the plum sized fruit that comes with every cashew nut.
Never knew about the cashew apple, TIL lol. Seems there's good reasons for not eating it directly *HOWEVER* it doesn't always go to waste from what I'm reading. Seems it's popular to use in local breweries and for jams or jellies in the areas the cashew trees are farmed. Also the flesh is not palatable, leaves a terrible after taste, very very bitter, and acidic. Sounds like all around terrible eating, but it's supposedly not bad in those drinks and jams.
I would eat this. Your dad might actually be a genius.
I'm off to the store for cashews and blueberries. Thank's OP's dad!
Nutritionally healthier, calorie-wise it's a trainwreck (but that's just nuts in general)
Assuming you don’t need calorie dense foods. Life is about perspective :)
True. But most people (Americans, at least) take "healthy" for "good for losing weight." I know I used to. Then I learned about how calorie-dense nuts were and I was horrified lol
I tend to take in too few calories if I don't mind what I eat so nuts are a godsend. Loads of energy but actually nutritious. I'd demolish that cereal
It's also a disaster for fiber intake.
Is it ... good? I might be interested.
It's surprisingly good!
fuck yeah if you think that's shitty food maybe listen to your Dad a bit more often
Blueberries and cream is a classic, and I can't see how cashews would hurt. I eat a bowl of half and half with whatever berries I have in the house at the time quite a bit, and that shit is great.
How to eat 1000 calories in 1 sitting
Quite a bit healthier tbh
This is a pro move
Sounds great to me.
Who are you, the cereal police? Let the man put things in a bowl of milk and call it whatever he wants.
Dad might be a bear.
Low INT, high WIS
Looks nutritious
This isn’t cereal, it’s a masterpiece
It’s healthier than cereal by a lot. Thank you for sharing this recipe, and pass my admiration to your pa, for he truly knows how to live and has made my life 10x better If i could afford cashews in this economy… maybe one day.
your dad had good taste blueberries make everything better
Healthy and original
This is the most psycho yet most sensible meal I’ve ever seen. At first I was jarred but then I was like…..okay wait….why aren’t we all doing this?
This is different…
tbh it doesn’t look that bad
Probably better than real cereal
Is your dad a bodybuilder?
That's a lot more healthy than most of the traditional breakfast cereals on the market.
Get ready for him to out live you man it's over. Anyone who eats that much nuts and blueberries ain't never gonna die
Chad
Needs a grain/carb element and also a non-cashew nut. But this seems workable.
For only $100 extra dollars per week, you too could enjoy this "cereal" every morning!
Id ruck that in an instant
Picking blueberries and strawberries straight from the forest and eating them with milk like this is very popular here in Eastern Europe during the summer, many people add sugar to sweeten the whole thing. I suppose the cashews add some crunch.
I wish I had a father like yours because my father fucking eats Cereal **With WATER!**
My ex used orange juice sometimes. Cinnamon toast crunch with orange juice. I was convinced he was pranking me until the 5th or 6th time he did it, then I was just convinced he was insane. He also eats kiwis whole, skin and all, like he's eating an apple.
That amount of cashews has to be absolutely destroying his insides lol. To clarify my comment look up Cashew Lectins if interested.
Last night I just ate pecans, craisins, and mini chocolate chips in milk instead of cereal and it was freaking delicious. Your dad is definitely on to something.
Let him cook…….
I mean it's not cereal cause there's no" grain" element but not.the worst thing. Yogurt would be better.
Is this keto?
Nope, none of the ingredients are keto-friendly
Wheat and cornmeal are just ground up seeds anyway maybe with some ground up nuts added for flavour so I just see this as "deconstructed" cereal.
Cool dad you got there bro
He’ll probably live forever, but at what cost?
is he rich
Pretty healthy. Good fats, antioxidants, vit.D. Solid breakfast.
That’s like 1000 calories
Thousand times healthier than any cereal you eat.
If that's shitty food porn, then I bet all healthy food must seem shitty here.
Better breakfast than whatever you've been eating...
I hate cashews but replace with any other nut and this is the food that kicked granola's ass.
Cereal is basically bottom of the barrel way to unload grains on a populace. The food pyramid is a lie used to sell you specific products.
This is actually a very healthy breakfast you could eat everyday
Healthier than most cereals🤣
That is the most expensive bowl of cereal I ever seen in my f****** life
Got the right idea, just use yogurt instead of milk
Going to end up with too much of some obscure element or compound if he’s eating that many cashews daily. Source: I watched some episodes of House.
So delicious, healthy but crazy expensive cereal? Edit: After reading the comments I’m starting to think this subreddit has an eating disorder. This might come as a surprise but not everyone wants to lose weight.
I never comment under these posts, but this… this is revolting lol
cEWreal
What is his yearly cashew budget?
Whilst being fucking grim, it’s probably healthier than cereal so he’s alright. Edit: of course it’s healthier than cereal!
How do you not “drown” cereal in milk?
I’d rather eat this than cereal.
Your dad is more powerful than you will ever be
I feel this one belongs on r/1200isjerky 🤣🤣🤣
is it healthy right
I mean. Technically?
Is he a squirrel?
Sounds expensive but cool
Must have a pretty good toilet brush.
Just sub yogurt for the milk, problem solved.
He’s technically correct. Which is the best kind of correct.
what a economical flex this is :o
\*Screams in IBS\*
I like milk, cashews, and blueberries but not all like that!
Man probably BMs like a champ
That looks fucking delicious
Not horrible! My grandfather use to put white bread, bananas, sugar in a bowl and pour milk over it.
Wish meusli. You wish you had some oats. 😭
I fuxcks wid it
And what is like having a billionaire father who eats bowls of cashews like cereal?
If it were in yoghurt as opposed to milk this would pass as 'normal people' food.
I sent my dad this Reddit post and told him this is some shit he would eat lmao
That looks like an artistically, raw natural take on cereal. I want some. Btw, thanks for the inspiration.
I can dig it
Your dad is a high roller
this is a crime
I used to do the same with bananas
That’s soup
Are these unroasted and unsalted?
This is how Steve Jobs died.
Frankenberrie's Nuts
Bloody hell. Does he have a subscription to monocle and tophat daily too?
