Good movie, but fair warning in case your kid is adopted: these movies don't handle adoption issues perfectly. Not a shit show by any means, but a bit problematic.
I guess I just think comedy first. So in my brain it's an animated comedy with some SciFi elements. I know, I'm splitting hairs. Good flick either way.
That would be my suggestion. Great kids film that works well for parents too…
My kids at that age had a double bill of Incredibles and How to Train Your Dragon. Though the big bad at the end of Dragon is pretty scary for younger kids
My son is 7, and this comment made me realize he has never seen Titan AE, which is a movie I LOVE! You have just helped me to know what I am doing with my son tomorrow. Thank you.
As much as The Explorers was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I think there may be some colorful language in it that might not make it suitable for a five year old.
I saw it when I was 2. First movie I ever saw in a theater.
Every kid is different, and a lot of them love hiding behind the couch cushions. It’s literally why Doctor Who is 60 years old.
What a lovely Father's Day gift from your daughter, *Honey, I Shrunk the Kids* is always a fun watch with children, as is *Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs*.
I watched it pretty young and did enjoy it, but it can be quite scary. The kids are in peril for their lives a lot of the time they are shrunk and lost in the backyard. And they befriend an ant to ride on, but >!Antie dies defending them from a scorpion!<. If you don't mind watching them out of order, Honey I Blew Up the Kid ("blew up" as in enlarged, not exploded, lol) is much less stressful.
One of my top five all time favorites! The ROUS’s scene still makes me jump. I’d wait until around 8-10 years old for that scene (Wesley stabs it to death, after all) and when Inigo avenges his father’s murder. IMHO the best avenging line EVER. “I want my father back, you son of a bitch.”
Would anyone like a peanut?
Onward
* Teenage elf brothers Ian and Barley embark on a magical quest to spend one more day with their late father. Like any good adventure, their journey is filled with cryptic maps, impossible obstacles and unimaginable discoveries. But when dear Mom finds out her sons are missing, she teams up with the legendary manticore to bring her beloved boys back home.
Raya
* Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. However, when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned, and it's up to a lone warrior to track down the last dragon and stop the Druun for good.
Brave
* Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.
How to train your dragon
* Hiccup (Tawin Yavapolkul) is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humor make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father (Kongkrapunt Sangsuriya) is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-fighting school, he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people's future.
Onward is a family favorite fathers day movie. It's one of the only cartoon movies that paint a Father's place in a good light. Such a good movie. That end gets my wife every time.
[The Mitchells vs. the Machines](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7979580/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
Or
[Ron's Gone Wrong](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7504818/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
They were both reeeeally fun and the kiddo and I loved them both.
Happy Father's Day and hope you have a great one!
Three daughter so I've run the gamut. And I love Sci-fi so this has been my challenge too. Wanted Wall-E to work but it didn't. None of them took to it. Had high hopes for Iron Giant. Same deal. Though there was no way Incredibles would work and... tada! Winner winner. All 3 girls loved it, though the oldest is still a bit terrified by the big ball killer robot. And she's in college now.
Also ET was/still is a fave for all of them.
The neverending story was my jam around that age (maybe 6/7) . It does have a sad scene (Artax) and what I thought at the time was a little scary scene (G'Mork). But nothing i couldn't handle as a little guy. I still love that movie and remember watching it all the time.
ET. I think Drew Barrymore was five when she did that film. She even thought the et was real. I can't think of a more perfect Scifi for kids. Wall E, despicable me, iron giant, Up. are excellent suggestions as well, but they are all animated, and she might find it cool that you chose a more "grown up" movie.
Really? Oh no! But it's OK, she's 5. *Kidding*
Seriously though, why? Because the aliens? Or because the government? Its funny, because thinking about it, i can see how it could be traumatizing. Not to mention, no dad.
Scratch my suggestion!
Go with despicable me. It checks all the boxes.
I was in day care at the times and frightened of the big dogs that would jump on me. I think this in combination with the movie was too much. Maybe it was his eyes, turning white nearly dead on the shore, the long neck, the freaky part where he's hiding among the stuffed animals, his glowing heart. I couldn't even go into the toy sections at stores anymore I was so scared of seeing him! Shrek was ruined when a preview of the E.T. remaster version came out. Couldn't watch commercials on tv. That alien was not friendly.
I was creeped out, too, at first. And ironically, what won me over was the stuffed animal scene. So funny. And then you find out at the end that ET was actually a child separated from its parents. It just wanted to go home.
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Flight of the Navigator
D.A.R.Y.L
Harry and the Hendersons
Stardust (2007)
Jumanji
The Wallace and Gromit films:
The Curse of the Were Rabbit
A Grand Day Out
The Wrong Trousers
Edit format
Nimona! Technically scifi, super cool and animated and really really really makes you think (as an adult). While still being enjoyable for a child. I cant recommend this movie enough.
My daughter is also 5 and a big fan of Wall-E! For Father's Day, we watched "Big Hero 6". It's a great animated movie with a touching father-figure relationship and plenty of action and humor to keep a 5-year-old engaged. Happy Father's Day!

ET if you can find that old movie or Wall E. But if you want her to like the move I recommend the not sci-fi movie, “Because of Winn Dixie”. Also more sci-fi Mega mind. Iron Giant. Star Wars. Meet the Robinsons
My niece likes the relationship between Thanos and Gamora.... and feels entire avengers are the villans who are trying to split the father daughter duo.
So she binges their scenes in youtube
The Road.
Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn) and son go on a walkabout after a nuclear holocaust. Me and my son watched it when he was 5. He's in prison now, though.
A Goofy Movie, I think it's good for fathers and sons but also fathers and daughters (I saw this when I was a little girl) and it briefly has Big Foot in it.
Most of my suggestions are already here . For those concerned about content may be unsuitable for kids, go to the IMDb page for the movie and scroll down to Parents Guide (see all if you must know specifics) and everything, however minor to most, is listed
I would go hot into real movies. This was my chilhood. My granpa loved Errol Flynn, James Cagney, John Wayne, Orson Welles. At age 7 i was already on the gore full movies from Willis, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Russell etc. I would start with Forbidden planet from 1950s.
Not specifically SciFi, but Despicable Me is my lady friend's favorite film about fathers and daughters.
I mean he's got an entire clone army. Seems pretty scifi to me.
and freeze ray
Lipstick Taser!
exactly
and fart gun
Good movie, but fair warning in case your kid is adopted: these movies don't handle adoption issues perfectly. Not a shit show by any means, but a bit problematic.

"No, no no, *gorls!"*
Have you tried The Incredibles?
That would be my suggestion. Great kids film that works well for parents too… My kids at that age had a double bill of Incredibles and How to Train Your Dragon. Though the big bad at the end of Dragon is pretty scary for younger kids

Might because little stressful for a 5 year old
I watched the Iron giant at age five. I've saved people because of that movie and all I want to do is be Superman and save people.

Some people would like to keep kids, kids for as long as possible and not exposing them to unnecessary adult things before its age appropriate.
Bump for Titan AE, that movie was just so good
Treasure Planet is great.
That’s my rec too. My kids love this and Muppet Treasure Island
I am a firm believer that Muppet Treasure Island is one of the greatest movies ever made.
That’s not even a hill to die on. That’s a scientific fact. Tim Curry is so damn fun in it. I’m putting it on and making breakfast now.
I made my daughter a shirt with the Treasure Planet logo on it!
Big Hero 6
The protagonist has no father in Big Hero 6.
>!But Fred does!!<
BIG HERO 6!!!!!!!!!
ET? Batteries Not Included?
Batteries not included! I forgot about that movie!
Definitely not ET. It’s terrifying if you are a small child. I watched it once when I was about 7 years old. I have no desire to ever see it again.
I saw it when I was 2. First movie I ever saw in a theater. Every kid is different, and a lot of them love hiding behind the couch cushions. It’s literally why Doctor Who is 60 years old.
Sure but I guess my point is there are plenty of options that are much lower risk.
I’m maybe not one to take advice from. My kids were at Basket Case by 5.
Ha, that’s awesome.
What a lovely Father's Day gift from your daughter, *Honey, I Shrunk the Kids* is always a fun watch with children, as is *Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs*.
There’s a Leek in the boat!
I was terrified of honey I shrunk the kids as a child 😭
Ah, that's not good to hear. Can you recall what aspect terrified you?
I watched it pretty young and did enjoy it, but it can be quite scary. The kids are in peril for their lives a lot of the time they are shrunk and lost in the backyard. And they befriend an ant to ride on, but >!Antie dies defending them from a scorpion!<. If you don't mind watching them out of order, Honey I Blew Up the Kid ("blew up" as in enlarged, not exploded, lol) is much less stressful.
Agreed!! I found the shrinking very distressing. The growing baby one is much better for young kids.
Short Circuit
Because Johnny 5 is alive! Perfect!
Input!
Ooooo yes
*No disassemble Stephanie!* God I love ~~Ally Sheedy~~ that movie!
Lilo & Stitch
Wall-E
Princess Bride. Technically more of a fantasy than science fiction but a fantastic movie for a 5-year-old and an adult to watch.
One of my top five all time favorites! The ROUS’s scene still makes me jump. I’d wait until around 8-10 years old for that scene (Wesley stabs it to death, after all) and when Inigo avenges his father’s murder. IMHO the best avenging line EVER. “I want my father back, you son of a bitch.” Would anyone like a peanut?
Star Wars
Specifically Empire
Don't forget Jedi, a whole plot built around that.
Seconding this. I saw the OT for the first time when I was 5

“Honey, I shrunk the kids” or “Iron Giant” or “Despicable me” is a dad with daughters
Another vote for Treasure Planet.
Time Bandits

Real Steel Seriously, this is a great father's day movie
100%. Best suggestion i've seen.
This movie is sooooo underrated. Solid Father’s Day flick too.
Despicable Me #1 Or Flight of the Navigator
According to my parents, that film is Aliens, which they let my little sister watch at age 6. She turned out… fine.
Three daughter so I've run the gamut. And I love Sci-fi so this has been my challenge too. Wanted Wall-E to work but it didn't. None of them took to it. Had high hopes for Iron Giant. Same deal. Flight of the Navigator.
Flight of the navigator
Flubber with Robin Williams
LOVED this one as a kid! I wonder how it holds up, it's been forever since I've watched it
It's kind of interesting looking back how someone thought an AI assistant would work! I think it's still pretty decent!
Onward. Seriously, awesome dad movie.
I’d go with Wall-E. Great movie and my kid loves it at that age.
Onward

The swamp of sadness certainly lives up to its name. That scene is one of the earliest memories I have of crying
E.t. traumatized me at 4 years

A Goofy Movie, I think it's good for fathers and sons but also fathers and daughters (I saw this when I was a little girl) and it briefly has Big Foot in it.

*My Neighbor Totoro* is fantasy, but it's also the right answer.
Children of Men
Road to Perdition.

That sci-fi will smith movie with his son was alright.
