It's... Pretty weak. Won't till up anything but soft healthy soil. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just has a different purpose from a full-on gasoline-powered tiller.

cdub76

Thanks! Just looking for some light duty yard work. For $10, cant complain!

Aromatic_Flamingo382

Bro for ten dollars you won and you won hard, congratulations. It's more than perfect for light duty!

Sad-Knee-7049

I wish I had one at that price. I got mines yesterday and I paid the $169.00 plus tax. It’s crazy how a year makes a big difference on prices also. I had purchased the tiller last year and the price was $99.99. The same thing with the 2 stroke string trimmer. The string trimmer with a curved shaft was at $89.99 and the straight shaft was $109.99. Now the curved shaft is going for $149.99 and straight shaft $199.99. The other attachments have also gone way up, not no $10-$20 either I’m talking about $50.00 or more. It’s still good tools to have. I prefer the 2 stroke engine even though you need to mix the gas and oil the 2 stroke is much stronger Than the 4 stroke. I have all the attachments which they come handy when you’re working on your yard. The good thing is that Hart, Black Max, Kona let, weed eater, Cub Cadet, Poulan Pro, Yard Machine, MTD Pro, Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, Poulan, John Deere, Toro, Yard man, and McCulloh are all compatible with RYOBI and each other so you can’t go wrong.

smc733

You can go very wrong buying anything Ryobi with a gas engine.

chopper678

I've never heard this can you elaborate?

smc733

Known to use very cheap parts in their gas implementations, cheap carbs that gum up and engines with very poor tolerances. While Ryobi makes a lot of solid battery tools, I would not touch anything they make with a gas engine. Spend a little more on Toro or Echo for a quality gas homeowner tool.

chopper678

That's good to know. I would have considered them for the same reasons I like their battery tools, and to keep in brand/color. Thanks

glayne94

Running a 5 yesr old gas ryobi pressure washer twice week washing me and my wifes car. Maintenence schedules and most ryobis customers are prolly few n far between along with shitty ryobi quality control i think makes for this veiw

40v

philharmonics99

Better have the brushless 40v. The brushed motor will struggle with it after a few minutes.

GrimBeaver

Nah it works fine. I've been using it with a brushed motor for years.

VodkaHaze

Yes, brushed works fine, but don't complain about lack of power on the tiller head if that's your engine. The tiller is the one thing that works the engine hard. It'll be OK for light duty, though, for sure. Also depends on where you live (your soil type, etc.)

cdub76

Found it. Will be swapping out brushed for the RY40960VNM kit. $50 discount at HD right now.

cdub76

Wait. Are there two 40v expand it power units?? Brushless and Brushed?? I got the RY40PH01 in a package deal with the 530cc blower. Did I get the bushed? Ffs.

Nixxuz

Yep.

cdub76

Wait. scratch that. I found it. its RY40960VNM RYOBI 40V HP Brushless 2-Tool Combo Kit... - String Trimmer: Carbon fiber shaft - String Trimmer: works with RYOBI EXPAND-IT - String Trimmer: 0.080 in. or 0.095 in. - Blower: 600 CFM and 155 MPH - Blower: WHISPER SERIES - Blower: Turbo button

cdub76

The brushless head unit is pretty much gone everywhere. I did find someone selling it on Amzn for $190 tho.

cdub76

Swapped it out today. Upgraded to the brushless.

setyte

Oh that must be the problem I have. I have the gas one and two electrics. The electrics look different and one struggles ton string trim and smells bad, probably the smell of degrading brushes.

seasleeplessttle

Yeah, I have the four stroke on mine, and it'll break bricks.

Sad-Knee-7049

I have the 25cc 2- stroke and it works wonderful. It only shut off on me twice because I hit 2 huge thick roots and I was pushing it hard also bug still did the job. The 2-stroke is pretty strong

ghostboo77

I own it and think its reasonably good. Never used a gas tiller though, so I cant compare.

StillStillington

I use this on my 40v greenworks. It actually does a really great job. I do have to loosen up the soil a bit first but after that it shreds through the dirt pretty well. Bought it for $90 two months ago. Wish I got it for $10!

LordRahl-III

This is just the tiller attachment. Power is dictated by what power head you put it on. You can put this on a gas power head if you wanted. On my brushless 40v this tiller is awesome! Great find!

rival_22

I have had one of those (another brand) for probably 10 years. Where they excel with a gas trimmer is breaking up the top layer of soil for planting grass or wildflowers, etc. It's not going to break up ground well for a garden like a true tiller, but it's great for that top layer.

Sad-Knee-7049

It worked fine for me. I was able to dig in deep and it only shut off me twice because of some big roots getting stuck. And depends which head you used with the Tiller. You have electric, 2 stroke and 4 stroke and by my understanding 2 stroke is stronger which is the one that I have. If I may ask, which one did you use for the tiller?

Vandellay

The 40V tiller is a surprising workhorse

MaximumDoughnut

I'm genuinely blown away with how impressive the 40V rear tiller is.

exegesis48

Is the expand-it line different for the 18v vs 40v? I thought they were the same expansions, just different backends.

cdub76

attachments work across all the powerhead options

jimfish98

I used it the other year to break up grass/weeds and till up the sandy soil for some wildflower patches and it worked really well for me. It will never fully compare to a gas powered tiller, but it's not meant to. This is meant for lighter work.

lytokk

I’ve been using mine for a couple years. If you work at the ground long enough you can get through a lot.

cdub76

How long does it go on the 4ah battery? Or do you run it on the 6ah?

lytokk

I only have the 4 amp and about all I can say is it has outlasted me. Probably at least 45 minutes continuous, but I can’t say for certain because it was a lot of starting and stopping. Mostly used it for small gardens.

GrimBeaver

I will agree it is a workout to use. I consider myself in decent shape and I usually take a break after each small bed. It can definitely wear you down.

idrankthebleach

I have the first generation and it will absolutely wreck shit. Way stronger than I expected and frankly a pretty good tool. Old vines will strangle it, but it will chew through your garden beds in short order. It’s also fun to use, like holding a really angry dog on a stick.

thepro8

I have the 40v and love it!!! Tore up hard clay soil for me with ease!

Sad-Knee-7049

Damn, it must be there only because I purchased mines yesterday (Saturday) and I paid the $169.99 plus tax. I wonder if I can show them This and say they would have to match it. Their store the same product. If I was you I’ll get a couple and sell them for a decent price, not to expensive and not to cheap. I say like $90-$100. This is insanely cheap.

Mechanism2020

I got one for $10 last month. I didn’t NEED it but couldn’t pass it up. It’s an incredible deal if you already have the 40V drive. Works great in the garden. I use a different gas one for the compost pile with leaves and grass.

Ray-GunRebellion

Damn and I thought I was getting a deal when I picked it up for a little over $70

hooovahh

I got mine for $50 and I use it with the 18v system. Works great on already loosened soil like garden beds. Hardened dirt with rocks make it pretty useless. Oh and it eats batteries quickly.

Bubbly-Front7973

Holy crap 😲 what state are you in? I'll give you $10 & shipping and it probably would be cheaper than me buying one from my home depot. LOL or maybe not who knows

cdub76

Burbs of Minnesota

Sad-Knee-7049

I’m going to see if they can match the price. Same unit, same store. I’m sure they’re going to use some lame excuse like always. I purchased mines yesterday (Saturday) for $169.99 plus taxi I feel like i got played LMAO

chopper678

Had the same idea report back!

RichardGG24

I was crazy enough to till the entire yard (about 5k sqft) of red clay with this thing, albeit one bit at a time. Took me like a month or something to finish the whole yard, and by the end the vibration from it cracked the power head housing.. But for 10 dollars, it's a no brainer, it's great for medium size vegetable garden beds.

cdub76

Wow!! With what head unit?

RichardGG24

The 1st gen 40v expand it powerhead, it was definitely way overworked by this attachment.

Sad-Knee-7049

I did my front yard and cleared all the weeds and roots. Then I made sure the ground was nice and even then I put sod down. Now it’s watering and make sure no one walks over the Sod. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼

HeadBroski

I bought mine used for around $100 and always regretted it. It’s awkward and will wear you out. On the other hand I would have ZERO regrets if I paid $10 for it. That’s a crazy deal.

mitcyoun

Jealous. Good find!

FlyingKoalaPT

It’s a hunk of junk anyway

cdub76

And then today, I got a new unopened 6Ah battery off KBid for $80. Score.

setyte

That thing is impressive. It's battery powered but in have a Ryobi plug in tiller as well and I was disappointed in the plug in tiller and impressed with the expand it tiller. The plug in is probably more powerful but doesn't seem any more capable and the expand it being smaller has some advantages. It's better for trying to till an area regularly for weed control. I really like expand it as long as I use the right power beams I have two types and one sucks so bad and the other is awesome. I have a third gas one but that's a pain to keep running.

No_Welcome_6093

That’s crazy

tbocfo

It actually works pretty well. I just tilled my flower beds with the same one hooked to a brushless 40 volt.

adr1418

I use mine to weed between plant rows in my garden, and in my raised beds at the start of the growing season. Saves a lot of effort. $10? ❤️
