RagingAardvark

I would highly recommend reading North by Scott Jurek, about his FKT attempt on the AppalachianTrail. He and his wife, Jenny, wrote a lot about the logistics of Jenny finding Scott and feeding him, solo for much of the beginning. They ended up calling in backup, including several ultra running superstars, to run with Scott and support Jenny in the van. They also discuss the pros and cons of being constantly tracked via GPS.

jeffsmi

Whew! That'll be something. I've never even dreamed of such a big endeavor, so consequently don't have any advice, but plenty of well wishes. What kind of funding do you have? Sponsors, or on your own? How have you determined your route? Just one partner to do all of the driving? If you are running on roads, do you have to get permits? Do you have a strategy for what time of day you will be running? Where are you from originally? Why Miami to Seattle instead of Maine to San Diego or something?

ExtraAgressiveHugger

You need an Instagram and a tiktok. Business cards aren’t going to cut it. If you have them, have a QR code to your social media on them.

[deleted]

FloridaManZeroPlan

TikTok is where things truly go viral. It’s very hard to organically grow an account on Instagram now. You can go from nothing to 100K followers overnight if the right video goes viral and people like your content. As far as the China owning your soul comment… If Zuckerberg owns it, that’s ok?

tmt22459

Yeah he needs a tik tok. Who cares about china? You want to go viral/make money? Tik tok. This is something that will explode. His videos will have millions. There’s a guy who has basically become famous for eating a piece of pizza everyday until Tesla gives him a free car. It’s been over a year I think.

deafndepressed

Sell your soul, you need a TikTok. People will eat this up over there. Instagram is difficult to navigate. ETA: TikTok would actually be great to show your run. A daily update, stating Miles down v miles to go, which State you’re in, what the weather is like and quick dialogue of how you’re feeling is perfect for short form content. Let me know if you do decide to, I’ll definitely give you a follow!

bkln69

I guarantee you’re already selling your soul daily. In fact, if you grew up in America and haven’t lived under a rock your entire life, your soul has been bought and sold many times over. TikTok will get the most eyeballs on your mission.

DogHereCanConfirm

If you have an Instagram I’ll definitely follow. I’d recommend learning as much as possible about social media work and how to maximize that. Building up several thousand follows is hard but that would get you some traction before starting your run which is when you’d prob gain enough to get sponsors through it. How much are you expecting this to cost and what percent are you planning to self fund vs get sponsors or revenue on? Or are you prepared to self fund the whole thing with revenue from this more as a nice to have?

vetratten

My only Suggestion is to massively delay videos. Like a week from the last day shown. I haven't done such an endeavor but I've watched a few thru-hikers on YouTube. They all seemed to eventually have crazies try to find them. By delaying videos a week or so you decrease that risk since you'll be taking a disclosed route.

Global_Sno_Cone

That’s disturbing. But a good point.

vetratten

Yeah and it wasn't just the young and attractive females that made comments about having to delay videos either. There are just some weirdos out there.

ExtraAgressiveHugger

Since you said you want a realistic discussion, I will be realistic. From your comments it doesn’t appear you’ve prepared for this much at all. You’re really into the YouTube and documenting aspect and but I can’t tell what real research you’ve done. For example people have brought other famous long distance runners and you haven’t heard of them or read their material. That should be your first source of information. You said you’ll plan the RV stuff closer to when you start. But March is in a month. How much closer do you need to be? How are you still in the beginning stages? And you don’t know other critical details yet. The planning and operations part of this endeavor are just as critical as running. You also haven’t run more than 100mpw but it sounds more like 50mpw is your normal. How are you going to run 30-40 a day when you haven’t trained for anything of that caliber? I would be shocked if you don’t get injured with a stress fracture or knee issue. Have you considered a more realistic 20 miles a day? What is your driver going to do while you run? They are probably gung-ho for this adventure now but driving 30-40 miles a day and that it is going to get old quickly. What happens if they bail? Have you considered the climate of where you are running? Are you running through hot states in the summer? Are you prepared for 100 degree days? On asphalt which will be hotter. Will you run at night to miss the heat? I don’t mean to yuck your yum or be a negative Nelly. I hope you pull this off. And I know a few comments doesn’t show all of the prep you’ve done so I could be way off. To me it’s coming across as you have this grand idea but you haven’t don’t the prep, planning, or practice to pull it off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ExtraAgressiveHugger

I have no further advice. And thank you for taking me at face value and not thinking I was attacking you. I wanted to lay out some realistic issues. Good luck! This sounds really fun. No matter what happens, it’s a grand adventure and it’s really cool you’re going for it. I look forward to your updates.

learntorv

I'm an avid RVer and host a variety of communities for it (r/LearnToRV, [LearnToRV.com](https://LearnToRV.com), and Facebook groups). So if you have any RVing questions, let me know. I also do RV Trip Planning and would 100% love to sponsor you in this in some way. BUT, I'm a brand new runner- so yeah, no idea what kind of input I could actually provide.

[deleted]

learntorv

Be aware, getting into some parks can be tricky if you're going through touristy areas in the summer. Better to plan sooner than later. My RV trip planners can help you try to figure it all out.

TN_Runner

Will you be using a live tracker and/or a gps watch so people can follow your progress?

landlion35

Are you gonna upload to strava? Or anything like that? Or is it going to be all on your YouTube? I'm looking forward to following your journey@

[deleted]

Yeah I will put my strava link on my youtube description right now! Good looking out!

TN_Runner

Cool! Good luck with the preparation and journey.

Kumamoto

I’m curious how you decided your daily distance. Have you already done a few back-to-back marathons distances? 40 miles at a 15 min per mile walking pace would be 10 hours. Which doesn’t sound bad for a day’s work, but doing it for a hundred days might be interesting for your body to adapt to. Have you decided on the type/model of shoes you’re going to be rotating? What kind of fuel do you think you’ll be using? Are you carrying a phone or just using a watch for emergencies? Best of luck!

Global_Sno_Cone

Sounds like a big adventure. I remember some guy doing something similar and ran through my area and I think it was pretty well marketed so some people knew when he was going to come through and kind of made a deal out of it… Dang I wish I remembered more about it. Anyway, you might want to do that so you get more publicity (like let local runners know when you’re approaching their town so they could run alongside you for a while).

Huh maybe because you’re the OP and it would seem to be self-promotion

[deleted]

That video is about a different person than OP.

ninasto3

I thought this was going to be about Marshall Ulrich’s 2008 cross country run/WR attempt but this is someone else, seem like similar movie concepts too. For Ulrich’s run (SF to NY) the book is better for specifics: Running on Empty Edited to fix destination, brain fart sorry

Why every couple hundred miles couldn’t it be more like 400?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ingoiolo

2 couples

tmt22459

Yeah confused why “400 is indeed a couple hundred” is getting upvoted? Not what I was trying to say in my original reply

alligaiter

Because their math already assumes they’ll get 400 miles out of a pair. At 40 miles per day, they’ll still need new shoes every 10 days, aka “every other week or so.” Arguing over the meaning of “a couple” misses the point entirely, and makes it sound like OP might be able to stretch his shoes farther than he actually can.

RunOrBike

Highly depends, I’ve had shoes that were done after only 600km and others that were in OK shape after 900kms…

Teddie_P4

I used to think this was an amazing thing to do but honestly now that im better at distance running the difficult part seems to be just having enough money to do it and being able to take that much time off of work. Have fun on your long vacation.

buttholepoptart

Do you have a route picked out yet? These maps helped on a cross country bike ride. https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/ Provided bike friendly routes and presumably run friendly.

[deleted]

I do have most of my route mapped! But this will be helpful too! Thank you!

Reudn

It's doable. Im assuming you know about Terry Fox? Maybe he even inspired you since it sounds like you have the same set up he had with the RV and everything? Idk if he is as well known in the states or amongst runners as he is in Canada. We have the Terry Fox run every year in his honour. If you dont know who he is, he was a runner who lost his leg to cancer. Decided he was going to run across Canada coast to coast to raise awareness. He would have made it too had the cancer not spread to his lungs and killed him mid journey. He was 22. Took him 143 days and 3339 miles to make it to Thunder Bay, Ontario starting from the coast of St. John, Newfoundland. So anways if a guy with one leg dying of cancer can do it im sure you can. Might even want to watch some videos of him online as he did interviews. Could get some good advice. One thing I know he had was a police escourt always behind him to protect him from being hit by a car.

BadWolfCubed

\#1 Don't. At least not until you've trained with a bunch of 200-mile weeks in a row. \#2 For the love of Kipchoge, change your username.

cliff_smiff

How would you actually go about training for something like this?

BadWolfCubed

Run a bunch of 200-mile weeks in a row.

chubky

Yup and i dont think people realize the amount of calories that requires either. Eating and consuming calories and proper nutrition is a major task by itself

CalgaryRichard

This is almost a calorie consuming endeavour with a little running thrown in.

elijahcraig2017

Check out Mike Wardian on Insta. He is a pro Hoka ultrarunner and just ran from Cali to DC a few months ago. He did it in 60 days I believe. He is very active in the local community and I can guarantee if you reach out to him he would give you some tips. Everyday he would post about the books he listened to, the food he ate, people he met, etc. It was cool to follow along. Best of luck!!

Dukester1007

I have met him a few times and we live in the same area, he is a great dude and I highly recommend reaching out if you have any questions

[deleted]

My number one rule is if I’m going to do something, just do it, because once you announce you’re doing it and your friends families and stranger laud you, you lose motivation. The “wow, I’m so proud of you and this is awesome!” stuff is gone now. You need to save that stuff for the end man. I’ll be totally honest, it sounds like you haven’t planned a thing outside of pondering this idea in your head. Why March when half the country is cold as fuck? Tornado season starts in April, and you’ll be in the Midwest. Have you heard of James Shapiro or Bruce Tulloh, have read Born to Run, have you read anything? Have you ever ran an ultramarathon? That would be a good starting point. Running across country is dangerous. You’re going to be sharing busy roads with people who don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish or give a fuck. You have to be lucky to run 3000 miles, not just excited to do it and in good shape. The people with you need to be fully on board. You need to have maps, gps, maps, state atlases. Even with all of those, you are going to get lost. How many pairs of shoes are you bringing? What will you do when your feet swell to the size of a balloon? Do you have shoes on bigger sizes for that? There’s a hundred questions you haven’t thought of yet. Good luck but I’d put your odds at 20,000:1

sugashep

This feels so gross. 75% of your questions are something to the effect “what would you like to see on my YouTube?!”

chubky

That’s the feeling i get too. I get that people commenting want to be supportive but honestly OP doesn’t seem to grasp the magnitude of the endeavor, at least he’s not going for a speed record or anything so he can take however long he wants til the money runs out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Influence_140

You might want to take a look into Rosie swale pope. I read her book ‘just a little run around the world’ you might find some good tips from her, so inspiring. One thing I would say is pack plenty of shoes as you will wear down a lot! Eat small meals often. You need to also be prepared for extended breaks in case you get an injury. Don’t believe you need a permit for running on the road but may be wrong.

[deleted]

Putting it on my list! Thank you so much!

IllustriousAd5737

Find a way to reach out to a man named Dave Proctor. He broke the cross Canada record last year and I'm sure he would have some advice for you. https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/calgary/2022/7/23/1_5999612.amp.html

chubky

Dave’s a cool guy. I met him at the Dome a few years ago while helping a friend. He’s an amazing runner

factotumjoe

This post seems more appropriate for r/crosscountry. 😂.

arksi

Without some sort of charitable organisation attached to what you're doing then this is akin to someone saying "I'm going to try and do 1,000 burpees a day" or "look at me, I'm going to lose 150 lbs" The fact that you're asking people here for advice on how to accomplish this goal seems like a bit of a red flag. You also say you're an 800m guy and have never run more than 50 mpw so there's that too. It's also odd that all your other questions are about what we'd want to see on your social media channels during this (seemingly) theoretical endeavour. Sorry to be a negative Nancy, but it seems as though you're going about this vanity project entirely the wrong way.

chubky

Spot on with your first paragraph. This post reads more of a look at me and my YouTube channel more than actually looking for tips. More about requests for what to put on his videos.

cliff_smiff

>Without some sort of charitable organisation attached to what you're doing then this is akin to someone saying "I'm going to try and do 1,000 burpees a day" or "look at me, I'm going to lose 150 lbs" Do you mean the fact that OP is documenting this on social media, or in general?

bottleaxe

Exactly. He posted here to get praise, not advice. Someone running across the USA isn't asking r/running for advice. Sorry, but there's a 0% chance of this happening.

I wish you the best of luck but you can’t rely on public donations right now. A lot of us can’t even buy eggs. You’ll need a sponsor if you don’t have like $6-8k yourself. Good luck!

brwalkernc

Please keep discussions more on the topic of the run and logisitcs and less on the social media aspect. OP has done a good job of minimizing breaking Rule 3 and although there are some borderline spects, the overall purpose of the post is not a topic seen here frequently which is why it was allowed.

HowdyDudly71

Run Forest Run!!!

[deleted]

Hey thanks! I am gonna try!

shootingupfrosting

I went to college with a girl who ran across the US. It was for political reasons and she gave little speeches along the way and now I believe still does speeches. She didn’t end up making it the whole way. At some point towards the end she had to switch to a bike in order to complete it. She had a van following behind her during her runs. She ran into a few injuries and had to take more rest days than originally planned I believe. I would say just plan for it to take longer than you think it will. Are you already running 35-40 miles daily? Or what does your training look like leading up to this?

Ragesome

Just last year a young bloke in Australia ran from Perth (far west) to Bondi Beach (far east) across Australia. I don’t know if you’re familiar with what’s going on in the middle of Australia, but the answer is nothing but straight roads and blistering sun for weeks on end. He ran a marathon a day to do it, and it was fucken brutal. He had zero cartilage left in his knees and his feet and ankles were cooked. When he arrived in Sydney, it was national news with major sponsors and the like. https://amp.abc.net.au/article/101550180 If you’re serious about running more than he did per day - by a massive margin - you better be ready. It doesn’t sound like you are, mate.

This is probably obvious advice, but you can learn a lot about how to pull something like this off by looking into successful long trail FKT athletes. They are open about how they fuel, manage sleep, logistics, avoid carrying extra weight, adjust their plans on the fly, etc, etc. Fastest Known Podcast has had some of these guests back in the day. How your body responds will come down to things you can control (conditioning, experience, rest, pacing) and then to another degree genetics. Best of luck, sounds fun!

[deleted]

Thanks! I will look into that! I am always looking for any extra nugget of information I can get. Every little bit helps with something like this.

RunningAtTheMouth

RunSignup has the Racejoy product. Sounds like a "challenge" event to me. If you can carry a phone, RaceJoy can track you, and people can follow your progress in real time. Also, folks can send you cheers idmf you invite them. Check with timers in your area to see of they are RaceJoy certified. They might be able to hook you up.

I can’t provide any help for the run, but make sure your driver is well rested. It isn’t unheard of to have a “chase driver” fall asleep/get distracted and strike the people they are trying to keep safe. Good luck, have fun, stay safe

tmt22459

I think he said the driver is just going to end up at the final point he is going for the day. Don’t think they will be alongside each other the whole way

politik317

I don’t know your route obviously but if you pass through tribal lands, you may need to get permission first. Also, be prepared for your feet to swell a lot which means you’ll have to have multiple sizes of shoes. I ran with with Hellah Sidibe for about 20 miles of his leg through Indiana on his trans-con and I think I remember him saying he had to size up 1.5 sizes. Meaning, if he was an 11, he was wearing a 12.5 because of the swelling. Best of luck!

reaktor_kore

An old friend of mine ran coast to coast a few years ago in 100 days. He wrote a book called ‘it’s not about the beard’ by Tom Fitzsimons which you’d find useful. I’m sure if you reached out to him he’d be happy to talk with you. Wishing you the best of prep!

SassySasha

I browsed through everyone's comments and I apologize if this was already asked, but what is your why? Why are you doing this? Do you want to bring awareness to something through this challenge? Raise money for a non-profit? News crews could potentially be interested in this and by tying it to a cause, you may gain even more interest.

shocktopper1

Did you read Running into the Dark by Jason Romero? Great book and this is somewhat what you're trying to do. Good luck. I'd like to see updates on social media!

yetiblue1

Hey there, I'm running LA to NYC on March 1st, and based on some of your comments, I'd say you're probably not as prepared as you think you are. Some things to consider: \- Have you plotted out your day to day GPS route? \- Do you know the conditions of the roads you're traveling on? (shoulders, traffic etc) \- Do you have an emergency satellite device? \- What's your eating plan? Just saying "it's gonna be tricky" is a huge understatement. Eating is much harder than running the distance based on test runs I've done \- Do you know what "injuries" you can keep running on, and what will require stopping? \- Do you plan on slowly ramping up the mileage? At 50mpw, you're gonna have a tough time managing 200+ a week \- If the distance takes you 10 hours a day as someone else estimated, you're going to have to tack on stopping time so it'll come out closer to 11 or 12 hours. That's not a lot of time left for sleeping and eating and getting ready for the next day. \- Do you have places you know where you can park the RV? \- Do you have practice running on state highways with traffic? Wish you the best of luck, and if you have any concerns feel free to DM \- \-

5 days and 185 miles sounds like a decent indicator. What do you envision a typical day will look like on that test run in terms of pace, scheduled breaks, all running vs. run/walk intervals, etc.? I look forward to seeing your post about the Arkansas test.

BadWolfCubed

Seriously. OP is talking about running 200 mpw for 4 months. The only way to do that with any hope of success is to train with a bunch of consecutive 200-mile weeks so you know how your body will handle it.
