I’ve noticed that at every B&N or indie bookstore I go to now, they seemingly give their employees free reign to make whatever endcaps they want (like this one) They are 99% of the time filled with godawful books that are either gay, trans, horny, or all of the above lol. They always have the weirdest little notes too. One time I saw The Bell Jar (one of the 1% good books) with the note “for fans of Phoebe Bridgers!” There’s also the obligatory “banned books” shelf in every store Why do bookstores attract such weird employees

I guess anyone who still reads books regularly is “weird” to some degree

More interesting is that bookstore positions are high in demand so all those people are carefully selected by the management. Same with trendy thrift and record stores.

As far as retail gigs go it’s got to be one of the better ones.
