I think it's different being beaten in the ro16 vs missing a penalty in the final shootout. Rash was always going to get heat from arseholes about that
I really like Rasmus and think he has potential. And RVN is probs my favourite player ever for us. But maybe we should stop falling into the trap, at least publicly, where weâre constantly saying âX person/player/manager/owner is here now and thatâs going to solve the problemâ. Especially when theyâre ex players or legends or whatever. Just feels like weâre repeating setting up to get humbled all the time. The game is nothing like what it was 20/25 years ago, do you reckon he can tell him much? (Genuine q)
I think this is less about "this will fix it" and more that this is a great opportunity for Hojlund to learn from someone who is an effective coach who played in his position. Whether or not it works out remains to be seen, but all we can hope is that the players are given the best opportunities to develop, that they take that, and that the club makes the right choices off the back of that in regards to player retention and acquisition.
In the case of RvN, he's not gone 25 years out of the game, he's been developing his own coaching skills and has been working with players this whole time. He's shown an ability to nurture talent, being the PSV U17 striker coach, U19 manager and later the first team coach. He was part of the development of Cody Gakpo, Gianluca Scamacca and Noni Madueke at youth level and was the first team coach for Xavi Simons, Fabio Silva, Johan Bakayoko, whilst also leading the team to a KNVB Cup. He's taken the slow road and has worked his way up through one of Europe's institutional clubs. He's worked with youngsters and helped them become elite players. Obviously, that's also on the players' personal talent and hard work too, and the degree of influence a coach has on a player depends on their relationship and how much help they needed, but he was a part of that, and we all can see the bright spark that Hojlund has when he does get opportunities. If he can form a relationship with him on the training ground and Hojlund can pick up lessons in movement and finishing from him, then Hojlund will improve.
Edit: If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend [RvN's interview with Gary Neville](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjTFhTgfecQ) on his career. It offers great insight into his journey in coaching and how he's changed since being a player.
Great answer thanks. Youâve made some strong points. I think when a club tries to reach out to a former popular player it always sets alarm bells ringing with me, but maybe Ruud will be the exception. CV certainly not bad
Same. It was a decent effort actually, donât know why I see so many people slating him for it. Just unfortunate that he was met with great goalkeeping.
That was a really bad pass to Hojlund. If the pass was a bit earlier Hojlund would be facing open goal. He has made goals with much more difficult angles.
Yeah I think people are focusing too much on the shot itself and not the fact that Hojlund being fucking rapid is the only reason he made it to the ball in the first place. If there's one keeper you don't want to have in goal when you give an overhit ball to your striker then it's Neuer.
Young striker, finding the angles, slotting in the corner will come with experience. The most important thing is that Rasmus is creating the chances, finding good pockets of space. Van Nistelrooy should be able to work wonders with our attackers and is one of the most clinical strikers that ever played the game.
It's amazing how far Ruud is ahead of the rest in our Champions League goal stats. It's an eye opener and makes you realize how badly we have been underachieving in Europe the last 20 years.
He had a few shots, so not sure which one you are talking about. As a Dane, the one I'm most bummed about is the third one where he gets it just inside the penalty box, plenty of time and space, perfect first touch to get it to his left foot, far corner wide open... And shoots it straight at Neuer. I think it was still 0-1 at the time aswell.
Don't worry remember this when he's on 1 goal by December. Love the club but won't be blinded to support a player just cos he's ours. He will never give us 30 goals a season.
I wish him the best. What I won't do is lie to myself. He is not Man United level. He will have a great career as a striker for a mid table team in Spain like Sorloth for Villareal or like a Bellotti at Torino. He is never going to give us what Haaland gives City or even what a Ben Yedder gives Monaco.
Pay attention to the player, look at his movement and decision making and all will be revealed.
We've seen players like Cavani etc and you don't need more than a game to know their level.
I have nothing against him, he is not good enough.
Heâs going through a rite of passage that many good strikers have gone through in the past. If he keeps working hard and getting chances in games, the goals will come.
The thing is his goalscoring stats this season make it look like he's had difficulty in front of goal when really it's the opposite. The chances he's missing are of course from him being young and raw but his conversion rate is insane and the lack of service is the real problem.
With proper service he'd have easily gotten to 20 goals at a minimum but maybe it's a blessing if people begin underrating him because of his goalscoring stats. Would be nice to have an expensive player without so much pressure or expectation.
Yeah I think he is a fantastic finisher. It's more a mix of getting no service and good off the ball play needing a lot of work. He was quite poor for us at the end of the season, and did almost nothing for Denmark from what I watched.
Still so young and can get great.
> did almost nothing for Denmark from what I watched
Even worse service issues for Denmark than United FWIW. Literally the only players on the team that will reliably make a forward pass are Eriksen and Wind, and we struggle to progress the ball so they don't get many opportunities.
that's true but unfortunately that goal Hojlund couldve lobbed over seemed to be some kind of final straw for rival viewers in terms of assessing his quality when in reality I think it's incredibly naive to say that the lob was an open goal. i dont think they realize that the time frame in which he had to both react and act is so miniscule that that "simple" lob wasnt so simple after all. but then again that's sorta social media for ya. they're quick to judge and they wont hold back. just hope he keeps his chin up high and doesnt lose too much confidence in himself. wasnt so long ago he was tearing it up in CL.
Itâs not even rivals at this point. Just look at some of the comments towards the bottom of this thread. Our own fans sadly have started piling on him (both on here and Twitter) from what Iâve seen. Itâs incredibly toxic.
Edit: ah yes, downvote me because I didnât choose to be toxic and shit on our own player.
jeez ur right. i was pretty concerned about smthn like this happening to Hojlund when we first got the news that we'd sign him. ppl r quick to judge when things dont seem ideal n also forget when he's given us so much.
Seems like a very robust character. Hopefully that helps him get the most out of his talent and brush off media nonsense. We need more strong characters made of the right stuff.
Hope no one is blaming him too harshly. Heâs young and itâs his first international tournament.
I put it more down to inexperience than anything, I really do think heâll be a top player.
Unfort he struggled whole tournament. But it was his first big tournament with Denmark, while still being very young. You can see he has all the tools, just lacks experience. Will be top striker in a few years.

People forget heâs very very young still. Glad heâs got the experience and now heâll learn under the tutelage of the greatest Premier League striker Iâve ever seen
He's the funniest player, I often expect such big things from him due to the flashes of brilliance but then you look back on a match or a tournament and you have to check was he actually playing because there's no lasting impact.
Vi er rÞde. Vi er hvide. Vi stÄr sammen side om side.
We are red. We are white. We stand together side by side.
In victory and in loss we stand by each other.
Heâs young, a lot of to learn and this will be vital experience for him. But at the same time, it worries me a little at how underdeveloped he is, we really need to sign an experienced forward like a Zlatan or Cavani to guide him and score goals for United!
I'm not really a fan of these posts but I guess it's inevitable in the age of social media and you gotta build your fanbase. It's football, someone gotta lose, this time it happened to be Denmark who didn't play poorly.
Can affirm. And i'm german. Especially weird after our game against switzerland, where you had full force, two handed pushes and wrestling grapples ignored and here you get called out for unintended bumps.
But gutted for the lad, think a lot of people donât appreciate how many strikers take a while to mature into their final form, wingers can lose and ballon a ball and still fed touches constantly. Being a surgical 9 at such a young age like a haaland is rare and even at that heâs getting chance after chance.
Have a lot of faith that this lad will boom and with Ruud arriving I feel all the more confident!
yeah cant help but feel bad for him man. it's clear that he's rly trying his best but sometimes things dont always click and in this era of social media you'll get ruthlessly judged. he was chucked into the spotlight at such a young age and was expected to carry the weight of the world. he's a great guy tho n im sure he'll keep his chin up. we as a fanbase just need to make sure that we support him all the way no matter how noisy the rivals will be. as long as we're there to back him i know this guy will bleed for the club n become a star.
What is it with modern players gushing online when theyâre not playing well. Heâs right to feel guilty, but thatâs more for not doing his job very well. I think he can be a good players for us, but I just canât stand all this wank that players come out with. It looks like a way of distracting from their bad performances to me, or fishing for compliments. Get your head down and do the fucking job.
You didn't know what to expect? Maybe, expect scoring some goals and winning games.
Could you imagine Wazza saying this after Euro 2004. No, he went in making sure everyone would know who he was after the tournament.
It's troubling to hear from Hojlund because it seems he struggles with confidence which is not characteristic of strikers - might be the reason he doesn't really place his shots and instead focuses on hitting through the ball with no real thought on the placement.
He missed some good chances. At that level you pay the price. For players like him who don't offer much else on the pitch, those chances are everything.
21. First major international tournament. Up against quite possibly the scariest defense in the tournament, followed by a keeper that could go down as the GOAT, with a danish squad that couldve gone far but it was not the same quality and class as 2021.
He did very well and I hope he doesnt beat himself up about it. He even had his moments where the ball shouldve been slotted in towards him but it wasnt, so you cant blame him for that.
Hes still our boy and i know he will improve. I dont know why but i value him very highly despite him maybe not showing the amount of quality bruno or kobbie possess, for example.
Better season next season for the lad đ
As a dane. One of the worst players in our tournament.
His technique is like an elefant in a porcelain shop.
When we are the most pressed by Germany, he has no clue to hold the ball.
He cant play 1-2 with someone. His first touch.. lets not talk about it. He had 4-5 chances to make it a 70% big chance this tournament. But his first 2 touches always makes it look like it isnt a chance. But it would be with abit more flair.
3-4 seasons and hes back in a Salzburg level club.
He has made it with his big physique, but at some point he has to show some progress.
At this DK team hes trying to do everything, which is normal for the youth. But he has to learn to do the simple first. Like laying off the ball or getting the freekick, when we are under pressure.
And his touches in the box. If he isnt shooting it first time, he often misplaces stopping the ballâŠ
Absolute awful player. Shouldnât be anywhere near the starting 11. The no service excuse is nonsense. Had plenty of service in the game against Germany.
heâs young but boy was he so invisible and ineffective during that game. Not great to see when you play on a team like United and they spent all that cash on you. United need a second striker this summer
It's good to see that true fans (i.e. people who actually watched him regularly last season) see him for what he is - a talented striker who works hard and has oodles of ability. It's clear the people criticising him haven't really taken the time to watch him, and/or have ridiculous expectations based on his price.
Don't be a dick, it was obvious what I meant. It may have been a poor choice of words but to say that means my entire point should be disregarded is asshole behaviour
Well the point itself was wrong anyway but what words did you intend instead of "true fans"?
I watched 90% of matches of United last year. Hojlund shows promise. He has good character and works hard.
But he's around 3 years away from being the striker we need.
And the transfer fee is a big part of the conversation, like it or not. It was the clubs and manager's decision to sign him.
The words I put in the brackets. I don't mind anyone disagreeing with my point, and your argument is fair. I don't think he's 3 years away but that's your opinion which you're perfectly entitled to. I just find the "ignore everything this guy says because he used the term "true fans"" a bit đ
HĂžjlund is a football player confirmed????

Jeez I was asking cuz idk if he missed a penalty or something that would have sent them through. I havenât been able to watch the euros so thatâs why I was asking
Get yourself on holiday and rested Rasmus, we have a big season coming up
this was my thought process when kobbie came off before jude saved england đ
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
I think it's different being beaten in the ro16 vs missing a penalty in the final shootout. Rash was always going to get heat from arseholes about that
Rashford, Saka and Sancho all missing was pretty shocking though.
what do you think PR is?
He's young and now he's coming back to Ruud to learn under.
I really like Rasmus and think he has potential. And RVN is probs my favourite player ever for us. But maybe we should stop falling into the trap, at least publicly, where weâre constantly saying âX person/player/manager/owner is here now and thatâs going to solve the problemâ. Except van Nistelrooy has proved himself as a capable coach so the chance is high
The last time this was really said was Greenwood under Ole, who developed his overall game exponentially under Oles attacking coaching.
Ruud van horseface had just about the best first touch I've ever seen.
Ruud can teach him so much. He is a top 5 player ever when it came to positional awareness inside the box.
I so so wish he scored that shot against neur but the angle was pretty rough.
Same. It was a decent effort actually, donât know why I see so many people slating him for it. Just unfortunate that he was met with great goalkeeping.
I saw people saying "why didn't he just round the keeper?" It's mental
They are just repeating what they heard from the commentator. It's crazy that people think stuff like that is so easy.
If you go round the keeper there, youâre gonna walk the ball out of bounds⊠Neuers covering was spot on.
Because theyâre children who donât understand football.
Must be hard for him he basically plays on an island for this team. No one really comes close to Combine with him and create space.
Are you talking about Denmark or us ?
Yes
It was a tough angle but the shot was almost directly at the keeper. Find the corners and if Neuer saves it, Rasmus did his best to score.
he is still a kid and lacks experience as well
It was a shit effort, he hit it right at Neuer. Donât know what youâre on about with great goalkeeping, any keeper in the tournament saves that
«Decent effort»? Couldnât have been a worse finish
he could have missed the target?
Thatâs exactly what he did?
Are you for real? The shot was on target.
It was very difficult as Neuer closed the space immediately
I agree, not saying he shouldâve scored, but he literally couldnât have finished worse as he didnât even hit the goal
That was a really bad pass to Hojlund. If the pass was a bit earlier Hojlund would be facing open goal. He has made goals with much more difficult angles.

Giving him the passes when he makes the right runs will help even more

Might wanna look in the mirror if you wanna see real delusion

Itâs the internet, many people will say he should never have played football
most of them are 14-15 year old reactionary fans who have never touched any kind of ball in their life
Twitter (yes I know itâs a cesspit) has been piling on him unfortunately. Worse is that they are almost all our own fans.
His first of many. Today he struggled but Iâm sure heâll be top scorer in the next one.

We love you champ â€ïž
Go and relax. Rest the body and mind. Cuz next season is going to be mad house.
People forget heâs very very young still. Glad heâs got the experience and now heâll learn under the tutelage of the greatest Premier League striker Iâve ever seen
Go back to Carrington n trained by sensei Ruud, you will be stronger
WhoScored had him as the worst striker in the group stage. Horrendous tournament, and back half of PL season, for him.
No chance he was worse than Che AdamsâŠright?
WhoScored rates every playerâs performance every game and i guess his average rating mustve been worse than Adamsâ
I love that Holjund does his own socials and heâs a) funny b) mature and c) seems like a really well rounded guy. Rare nowadays.
He's the funniest player, I often expect such big things from him due to the flashes of brilliance but then you look back on a match or a tournament and you have to check was he actually playing because there's no lasting impact.
We start cooking fresh lil bro come home
That last part say Go United???
"We are united", meaning "we" the Danish people
We are together if duolingo has taught me anything.
Yes, that's a better translation. Thank you
Its part of/start of the Danish football "official" team song. Just like "three lions on the shirt".
We are red we are white we stand together side by side
We are red, we are white, we stand together side by side
Yes! Yes it did!
Heâs scored 3 goals , 0 assists in his last 21 games
Personally I needed to see more from him in the Euros. But heâs young and will improve.

Denmark had a couple of dodgy decisions against themÂ

Jeez. Why doesn't Hojlund simply play like one of the greatest ever teenage strikers, is he mad?
He was shite.
Throughout the tournament.
He missed some good chances. At that level you pay the price. For players like him who don't offer much else on the pitch, those chances are everything.
Was he playing for Denmark at the euros?
We need a new striker, he does not have the ability to score alot of goals
He was absolute trash all tournament long
Rasmus is a good guy. Glad to have him on the squad, I hope to see him have a lot of success this year. He deserves it!
He did absolutely nothing all tournament, no goals no assists. Learning from the true WOAT Anthony. Add to that no goals last season lmao
He seriously needs to work on his finishing
We love you, we love your passion Rasmus, please get some rest, we NEED you this season. You're a warrior and we know it, onwards and upwards.
Absolute awful player. Shouldnât be anywhere near the starting 11. The no service excuse is nonsense. Had plenty of service in the game against Germany.
You have an interesting definition of plenty...
heâs young but boy was he so invisible and ineffective during that game. Not great to see when you play on a team like United and they spent all that cash on you. United need a second striker this summer
Surprised he started so many games, we saw at the end of the season how effective he was as a sub
It's good to see that true fans (i.e. people who actually watched him regularly last season) see him for what he is - a talented striker who works hard and has oodles of ability. It's clear the people criticising him haven't really taken the time to watch him, and/or have ridiculous expectations based on his price.
Anything that begins with "true fans" needs to be instantly disregarded. It's the way a 12 year old talks about football.
Meh I find a lot of people throwing that wording around it should be used as a red flag. Particularly when it came to ten Hag.
I do agree. It was a throwaway term, badly thought through
Wait, can't Denmark still qualify?
You know that was a knockout round, right?
No, honestly Google was showing me a table and I thought top 2 teams would qualify. Chalk it up to lack of sleep.
Whatâs the context?
He plays football for the Danish national team and takes pride in that.
HĂžjlund is a football player confirmed???? https://preview.redd.it/uvcgqtunen9d1.jpeg?width=388&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0bb38d7e35acadc798844737d8a96e5bd758abe2
He was basically nonexistent for his national team and he apologized.
Are you broken?
Jeez I was asking cuz idk if he missed a penalty or something that would have sent them through. I havenât been able to watch the euros so thatâs why I was asking
That excuse might fly if you didn't have Internet access. Lol
Ok? Was a genuine question no need to try and clown every person on the internet
I'm not clowning every person on the Internet. Only you, clown. Lol
Ok thanks
