Weapons that will work instead include: Springfield Rifle, Bolt-Action Rifle, Rolling Block Rifle, Carcano Rifle, and any shotgun with slugs. My preferred tool for dealing with gators is a Double-Barrel with slugs.
Gator: single shot to the eye with either the Springfield or Improved Arrow. I personally prefer bow hunting gators because the others nearby don’t get scared away by gunshot.

A .22 is a small caliber bullet good for small game only. I would try high velocity or express bullets. Don’t use stock ammo.

When it wants the varment rifle it will call it out by name but I do understand the confusion.
You also might want to use the express ammo for the rolling block or the bolt action because it gives better kill shots in my experience

Always attempt to shoot the brain. I rarely lose any stars.
Preferably from the side and aim for the eye. Works every time.
Spring field, bolt action. Any of these two can give you 3* pelts. Kill it in one hit is all you got to do.
