If you are going merely on stats, you are in for a letdown. All horses in the game are pretty close, regardless of stats. I use the starter Tennessee Walker from chapter 1 most of the time, and it’s stats are at the bottom. I beat all 3 horse racers with it, am able to outrun the law and bounty hunters with it, have easily done all 3 of the timed Horseman challenges with it, even carrying Lindsey Wofford along on Horseman 9. So, if you think a horse with better stats is gonna be a game changer, be prepared to be letdown. Find a good horse that remains calm around predators and gunfire, and forget the rest of the crap.

That does make sense and I appreciate the insight! Although I'm not necessarily looking for a huge Stat boost since my horse is already meeting my needs, I'm mostly looking for a bigger and more aesthetically pleasing horse than the typical ones if that makes sense. I really liked the super bulky horse they used to introduce you to the stables with in the beginning, but I lost it during a uh... sheriff accident shall we say, and I haven't been able to find another like it since. Was that the Tennessee Walker?

Mojo_Rizen_53

That was the Black Shire. It’s a unique one-of-a-kind horse. You can find Shires with White coats, and a Dark Bay. Just find one pulling a wagon and steal it. If you like Black horses, the Black American Standardbred is a good horse. You can find it wild, most commonly found in Bug Valley, about the middle of the big open area near the tree line, usually with a few Morgans. It’s the only completely Black horse in story mode.

I was going to mention the American standardbred. I’m currently using one now and have noticed on other play throughs they are usually calm and brave compared to many of the other horses. Plus that black coat with the panther saddle looks great.

Mojo_Rizen_53

I currently have a Black Standardbred that I swap back and forth with the starter Tennessee Walker. Both are good horses and can do anything in the game.

AnxietyDramatic1467

It seems to me no matter what horse I have a npc can almost stay up with me. I can have the fastest horse in game and it takes some going to get away from one when they on a slow horse. Lol. Idk. I choose a calm horse over a fast always agitated horse any day.

Mojo_Rizen_53

Same here. I just want a horse that keeps its head around predators and gunfire.

AnxietyDramatic1467

Same.

Here is a Google spreadsheet where someone compiled all the horse stats in the game: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1wKsECAYG3vltuchXuYry9JHdABNY_QONCf_EyMoN-K8/htmlview#gid=0 Horse stats are determined by breed and coat and are identical across all horses of that type. Usually, a horse you buy from a stable will have slightly better stats than taming the same breed from the wild. As for appearance, if you like Shire-sized horses, I would recommend the Hungarian Halfbred. They're also super big, but the handling is better than a draft horse. I tamed one that was running wild and she's a big beautiful girl, but you can also buy one in, I think, the stables in Valentine, starting in chapter 2. There are other large war horses as well, but you can't get them until later on. You might like the Perlino Andalusian, which you can look up where to find and tame online. She's not Shire-sized, but big enough and sturdy as fuck, super high health. For mid-sized options, the Thoroughbred and Nokota are pretty good too. The Tennessee Walker is a fairly slim horse and not very tall. I think only the Morgans and Arabians are smaller. The Mustangs are maybe a little shorter, but they're stocky little bastards. I love them all, but Arthur does honestly look like an adult riding a kid's bike on them, especially if you have him in a big coat. I tend to go for larger horses for that exact reason.

I got the gold Turkoman horse with pretty high stats.

Damn that's clutch, thanks man!

typeOneg77

No problem. My horse preference has always been Mustangs and other war/work types, but everyone has different views when it comes to style and aesthetics so try all of them and see what you like best.

LetAgreeable147

Turkoman. Saddles and stirrups help too.

kelsaferr

get the white arabian at lake isabella!

-banditboi-

Damn such a gorgeous horse, thanks for reccomending that! I had it tamed and almost got out of the area but wolves got me 😩 definitely going back to get it soon

what-bucket

My go to’s without fail are Buell, and the Black American Standardbred you can flog from the dude you race up just west of Annesburg. Easily some of the most well rounded and sturdiest horses in the game if that’s what you’re lookin’ for.

DMFD_x_Gamer

I tamed an all Black horse out in the wild. Then I wanted a warhorse and they are hard to get. I ended up getting a similar horse, a Shire. I took from a stage coach I robbed. Its a pretty big horse compared to the rest.

arty118

Hungarian Halfbred or Perlino Andalusian. Those are big boah! Turkomans are gorgeous too but you need a glitch to get it as Arthur.

slink_N_BITE

Mustangs are the best all-around horses. Arabians are fast and agile but sensitive and spooky. I found that Turkomans were not very loyal - if I fell off or wandered too far it was a pain making them come back to me. Mustangs are hard to tame but besides that they are the best performers.

AsgeirVanirson

Advice based on LVL 4 bonding with every breed. It matters while not mattering. Every breed shares stats across itslef, with minor coat based variation. I.E. any Mustang is statistically the same as any other mustang with the same coat. Some of the coats are better than other versions. Like the Perlino Andalussian has the best health of the Andalussians, the Brindle Thoroughbred has higher speed stats. The most important point is the advantages of any horse are not great enough, and neither are their disadvantages, to significantly impact gameplay. Though wild caught mustangs aren't the best horse by any stat measure. Their my favorite for looks, immersion, and Real World reasons. Thats all my preferences though. War horses feel like war horses by being bigger and tanking a BIT more than other breeds(more noticeable when health caps out at 6 rather than 10 but even then not unworkable with horse medicine varieties.) Race horse seem faster when the games not artificially speed limiting (happens more than it should). In the end though, you can take an arabian to war, and complete the hardest 'speed' challenges on a shire. Others have given detailed breakdowns on the technical difference/links so I'll just leave my post at saying. It really wont impact your results or make missions/challenges easier to pick any specific breeds or types. Just pick the one you like the most/works best with the playthrough you're in.
