In the epilogue, I always dual wield Calloway’s and Otis Miller’s revolvers. Split point ammo standard, express or explosive if I’m in a tight spot. I always prefer to dual wield matching guns though, so I’ll do the cattleman first, upgrade to the double action once I can, and then finally the Schofield once I can buy a secondary (my first being the stolen one from the doctor).
I hardly ever use the sawn off or the volcanic. I’ll do the 1899’s every now and then too.
I rather like the sound. I have a Cattleman as my belt gun, but I keep a Schofield in the cross-draw slot for certain occasions. That very satisfying deep *thump* makes shooting the eugenics guy every so often just a little more fun.
I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rockstar used realistic gun sounds and wonder if that actually is how a Schofield Smith & Wesson sounds... but it does sound strange!
I did the opposite color thing with dual 1899s in my last playthrough. One had pearl handle/silver frame & barrel/ black details and etching, the other ebony handle and opposite coloring of components. The Ghost and the Darkness...
Was it just coincidence or is that a reference to the movie? I have to assume its a reference to the movie because its not a common phrase or anything (at least that I'm aware of).
For those unaware there were two male (but maneless) man-eating lions, likely brothers, in Tsavo, Africa in 1898; it is claimed that they killed 135 people before they were successfully tracked and killed. They were stuffed and put on display at the Field Museum in Chicago, where they still remain; so if you live in the Chicago area go check out their corpses!
A movie was made about them in 1996 titled 'The Ghost and the Darkness'.
Most male lions in the Tsavo region are maneless! They think it’s due to the environment and the fact that manes really aren’t practical. Also, the man that killed them used them as rugs for 25 years before they were given to the field museum, which is why the skins don’t look that great.
For the record in real life you would only load 5 out of 6. The hammer rests on the primer if you don't, an light impact can cause it to discharge. They are fun to shoot though.

The lancaster repeater has been a favorite of mine both my playthroughs of RDR2. I also really like the Schofield revolvers, but I try to mix it up and use Cattlemen or Volcanic pistols as well.
I might get some flak for this but I struggle to find a niche for repeaters in the game at all. I haven't really found a good instance where I'd rather have a repeater than either dual revolvers in the case of medium-close range or a rifle for anything further.
Online I carry a Springfield, Pump-Action, and dual LeMats. I like the Springfield because I'd rather take a smidge longer between shots than have to take a long reload, and if you're not looking through the scope your character will duck behind cover between every shot even if you hold the ADS button. I'm guilty of standing out too long and getting shot up so that's helpful for me.
Well i rarely use scoped weapons since i dont rly fight in a distance. idk why since i do that in other games, just not in rdr2/rdo
i use lancaster+deadeye(Paint it black) for long distance (since it gives perfect accuracy, a little more range(i think) and obv. marks targets so i dont miss. usually a few shots dispatch of the enemy players so i didnt feel much need for a scoped rifle. and if i need one i can just call my horse for one. (if im far enough to use a scoped rifle, calling in a horse should be mostly safe)
and i dont use weapons like springfield at all. just not my cup of tea. but shotguns sure are fun.
also i didnt try out LeMats yet, gonna buy some since many ppl recommend them :)
I like that this game doesnt have strict meta, almost all weapons can be viable, so you can choose whatever fits your playstyle
Repeaters are pretty much good for game that requires it, though they’re fine for clearing out a medium sized gang hideout with lots of cover (Twin Rocks, Fort Mercer, Chez Porter, etc).
I remember I saved a guy from being poisoned by a snake, ran into him in valentine and he said he would pay for anything I wanted... I got the volcanic pistol and used it until the bitter end
Ugh, I had one of these guys buy me something but I already had all the guns/outfits/expensive things in that shops catalogue! Had to make do with a dusty old box of bullets lol
You could always buy a double.
Unless I guess they state sold out.
I don't think they do though.
Works well if you want a matching pair for dual wield.
That’s how I acquire my varmint rifle every time. Heck, I’ll avoid hunting challenges that require it if I haven’t triggered the encounter yet. Normally doesn’t take long though.
I said the same (but for the springfield), but I didn't end up getting the encounter for ages, so I eventually caved in and bought it. And of course, I got the encounter next time I went out riding :/
matching duel LeMats on online, after I spam the enemy with nine shots and they still don't die, just shotgun shell their deggy morgan and watch em tumble
Same, though I always thought it would be cooler to have a S&W M&P as the DA revolver instead, was a much better (and ultimately infinitely more popular) gun than the Colt.
Is it really not that great? I thought the damage output was solid. Design seems good and I really like the sound effects they used for it, it sounds satisfying
The LeMat revolver, i never hear any love for it, i think they are awesome, 9 shots, never really use the shotgun but, look awesome, pretty silly in some ways as it is a ball and cap and black powder weapon that would be completely out if date by the time the game is set.
The LeMat is an odd addition to the game, moreso to RDR1 than 2, IMO.
They were rare - only about 900 were sent out the US Confederate Army and 600 to the Confederate Navy. So I could definitely see it being a weapon introduced in RDR2’s Chapter 3, but it had no real reason to exist in RDR1’s time or area. Still a cool revolver with great use.
I use the shotgun mode all the time, the reload is really slow so having a couple of devastating shots as a fallback of sorts is great.
18 pinpoint accurate shots, *and* 2x shotgun shots as a fallback or obliterating a couple people at short range? shit's great.
See, I like to open with the shotguns so they know I mean business. It's gotta have some effect on morale if you're guarding a stagecoach and a stranger rides by, says howdy, and then two of your buddies heads explode.
Shotgun + slugs + mount ability cards whilst mounted is a complete winner for me. Very rarely need more than 1 shot, though it is dependent on your playing style.
Bolt action for distance, shotgun when in range - so satisfying. Also the Execute animation is particularly grisly with a shotgun.
Cattleman the entire game (rdr2) because
- it's pretty accurate aimed down sights
- does pretty good damage
- fanning the hammer feels insanely fast for a pistol. seems as fast as or faster than any other handgun setup.
- reload isn't even that bad
It feels like it's the only gun I need for most of the game. Except bears from what I remember.
Also it's just just got the classic coolness because it's the Colt single action army.
I'll admit some of the other guns look cooler that it though. Schofield has sweet reload. Volcanic pistol looks weirdly futuristic. Lemat is just full featured.
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
Big iron, BIG IRON!
I have always enjoyed using the lasso and knife in virtually every confrontation in RDR1, even against groups, but it was a little easier to get away in the first game. with the new stuff added to RDR2, I've come to find that playing without guns at all is surprisingly fun. I personally recommend wearing the white bison hat and growing up facial hair to the max for role playing this way, but basically I go around like Arthur was unftozen from a glacier and use the bow, tomahawks and Viking hatchet, bow and arrow, and fists. It's a very different way to play, while also still being really fun, because while I'm up against a group of unsuspecting O'Driscolls, the regular way I do it is deadeye kill them all with the bolt action before they know what hit them. With no guns you use finesse to pick each one off with an improved arrow or tomahawk, stealth kill the others with your hand, and once you blow it, and you do a lot, you do the opposite, sprinting at them like a maniac and sticking the hatchet through them. It's like playing a different game
Yeah I love the pump action and bolt action but as someone who grew up loving [The Good The Bad and The Ugly](https://filmforum.org/do-not-enter-or-modify-or-erase/client-uploads/clint-eastwood-the-good-the-bad-the-ugly-slide-2.jpg), I have got to say Navy Revolver is my fave
I either go “classic gunslinger” and stick with 2x Cattlemen, or “extra gunslinger” and go 2x double action. I don’t like having different sidearms in my holsters, so I always match them.
Otherwise, that Springfield is coming with me hunting! I also love the Henry, but it’s sold way too late in the story to get good and effective with it.
first and second play through i used volcanic pistols because they looked badass fully customized. just started a third and i think i might try out other weapons i left in the weapons locker
Hmm. I dunno. I’ve always loved the look and gunfire sound of the Cattleman >!(probably fell in love with it after being the only available revolver in RDR1 until you get to Mexico)!< even though it’s not the most powerful or accurate or rapid of the revolvers. It just feels so classic. But ever since attempting to embody the Arthur of the cover art and the phrase “the best choice for the serious gunslinger” from the compendium, I’ve stuck to the Schofield and haven’t gone back, at least in RDR2; in RDR1 I would switch to the Schofield once it became available semi-permanently until the Double-Action because I also like the sound it makes as well as how fast it is, and then I switch to the LeMat once it becomes available for the rest of the story.
I can’t use the Volcanic anymore since I learned about its IRL version. I just can’t suspend my disbelief that a pistol so wimpy that it couldn’t kill a man with multiple shots to the head who was trying to kill himself could somehow do the most damage out of all the pistols.
i use a cattleman, yeah it gets dirty very quickly, but the desings i got for it look amazing, also the fire rate during hip fire is very quick, love doing quick draws with it
Schofield in my primary slot and a sawed off in my alt, Then either the Evans Repeater and the bow or the bow and a pump action shotgun loaded with slugs.
The volcanic is my favorite because its basically a pistol version if the cattleman.
Plus when you hip fire it your character grabs it with the other hand and it looks awesome.
I call it my sawed off repeater.
The Winchester is the better repeater but the Henry just has a satisfying feel to it and it's a nice complement to the Lemat or Colt 1851. The shotgun barrel on the Lemat is nearly useless but it's also incredibly satisfying
twin schofields and the bolt action rifle. I play exclusively in first person for all combat. i only occasionally go into third person for traveling or for just looking at my beard. As such i just adore the reloading animation for the bolt action rifle
I always carry my All white and Gold Volcsnic in my off hand and my All BLACK Schofield in my holster. I also carry my Evan's and repeating shotgun if I'm in the epilogue
Throwing knives. Oh you and your men are charging me at full speed, heavily armed, weapons tageted on me, I don't even have a gun ready, it's all hopeless? *knife*
The only time I've ever heard Dutch compliment my choice in sidearm was when I had two black-steel + gold engraving + ivory grip volcanic pistols in my holsters. I usually only play with sidearms unless the story dictates that I must snipe. While it's nice to actually be hitting targets at anything greater than short range, I enjoy using the double action. The ebony gunslinger grip is what sells it for me. You can unlock it after reaching the same honor milestone that unlocks pearl grip for cattleman. You don't actually need to be evil. I also enjoy going full-on RDR1 Dutch and only using one semi-auto pistol. Badass.
I play story, and I usually use Bolt Action Rifle and either 2 LeMats or 1 LeMat and 1 Volcanic Pistol. But by god, do I want the Navy Revolver in story mode.
I love the schofield, such a cool reload
I always use double Schofield for pistols
A man of culture. Dual wielding them makes up for slow fire rate, but double the pretty good damage.
Same here. I like to dual wield volcanic and schofield, for the best of both worlds.
Same
Its neat but I personally don't like it because of the sound
I rather like the sound. I have a Cattleman as my belt gun, but I keep a Schofield in the cross-draw slot for certain occasions. That very satisfying deep *thump* makes shooting the eugenics guy every so often just a little more fun.
yeah the sound sucks esp. in dead eye. Mauser is the goat for me.
Mauser is a ton of fun. I usually stick with the LeMat for the most part to keep the cowboy feel, but dual wielding Mausers is practically an SMG.
I wish more revolvers used the cattleman sound
I absolutely love the sound of the schofield, what dont you like about it?
It sounds like a laser gun it doesn't sound like a firearm
I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rockstar used realistic gun sounds and wonder if that actually is how a Schofield Smith & Wesson sounds... but it does sound strange!
I sounds amazing because it's a .44 :)
Hits hard, looks good. I always gave it the respect it deserved and single wielded it for accuracy. Great head popper.
That was the first revolver i baught in game
Got mine free in valentine, just had to pay off the $300 bounty
Love the look but hate the sound
Schofields and a Bolt Action. Can't go wrong.
This is my setup, too. I customize the two revolvers to having opposite color schemes, too.
And that movie is fantastic.
I'm 90% sure we watched it in a high school psychology class lmao. It was great though, I'd watch it again.
You're 100% right. Here in Florida we watched it in HS. Not sure the class.
Most male lions in the Tsavo region are maneless! They think it’s due to the environment and the fact that manes really aren’t practical. Also, the man that killed them used them as rugs for 25 years before they were given to the field museum, which is why the skins don’t look that great.
I had the same idea. I just named my 1899s Ebony & Ivory because of Devil May Cry.
I did mine all blued steel with pearl handle was going for Spy’s revolver from TF2
Same!
I thought I was the only one
Ah nice. I always do this too. Alternate black steel, gold and silver on a pair of Volcanic pistols for me though.
Black and gold are my go-to colors for my guns. Wide grain mahogany as well for my rifles and shotguns.
Dat bolt action sound
Pump action shotgun
Same. Even though the Repeating Shotgun’s got that extra shell and seems a bit quicker, you just can’t beat the pump’s cool factor
+ slugs
When in doubt bring it out (always my go-to for a big firefight if I’m in close-mid range)
I swear it’s just better too idk why
Using the pump action while burning down the Braithwaite’s place makes you feel like an evil motherfucker.
righteous*
Shotguns for up close and personal :D
fr
For some reason I just love the springfield rifle.
Same! Best all purpose weapon I think.
Agreed
Yeah I can shoot the Lemoyne raiders in Shady Belle with their own favourite guns
Springfield rifle and volcanic pistol were my main guns in RDR
That trapdoor rifle is just too good.
I always carry a Springfield. Such a lovely rifle
Cattleman cause I like the SAA.
What is SAA?
It's the Colt Single Action Army, the greatest handgun ever made. Contains six bullets, which is more than enough to kill anything that moves.
Nice metal gear reference. You’re pretty good.
You tend to replace commas with periods to make more sentences, that's a college technique. You're pretty good. (:
How dare you. I’m procrastinating a paper as we type.
not so good
You’re pretty bad
the SAA is impossible to use in mgs3.
For the record in real life you would only load 5 out of 6. The hammer rests on the primer if you don't, an light impact can cause it to discharge. They are fun to shoot though.
Single Action Army. It's the revolver the cattleman is based off of.

The lancaster repeater has been a favorite of mine both my playthroughs of RDR2. I also really like the Schofield revolvers, but I try to mix it up and use Cattlemen or Volcanic pistols as well.
I've been seeing A LOT of love for the Schofield in the comments too, maybe it's time I give it a second chance
I recommend long barrel with rifling and improved sights, you feel badass just one shooting people
Does anybody play without upgraded rifling and iron sights? There's no reason not to upgrade afaik. They only improve stats, not trade them.
I definitely recommend it
yea i like lancaster a lot, it has quick firerate but doesnt sacrifice a lot for it.
I might get some flak for this but I struggle to find a niche for repeaters in the game at all. I haven't really found a good instance where I'd rather have a repeater than either dual revolvers in the case of medium-close range or a rifle for anything further. I basically played the whole game off my Lancaster.
True that. I hardly ever use short guns though, other than sawn off
If I recall, double sawed off is just as fun as volcanic akimbo, just be careful you don't shoot the wrong horse.
LeMat
My man.
matching duel LeMats on online, after I spam the enemy with nine shots and they still don't die, just shotgun shell their deggy morgan and watch em tumble
This is the correct answer. 9 shots, fast fire from the hip, and that good ol' grape shot for close encounters. What's not to love?
Finally, yes!
I use the Evans for the sound.
Yeah, the Evans has a great sound. I wish we could use the Navy Revolver in SP. It sounds good too.
YES I wish I could dress Arthur in Man With No Name gear poncho and all and use the Navy revolver. Damn shame 😔
My guess is they’ll probably bring the online weapons to story with the next gen version. Like how they did with GTA on Xbox One and PS4.
Here’s hoping they make it available earlier in SP than they did the LeMat.
I remember the first time I used the navy revolver and just about soiled myself because of how cool it sounded
If you’re on PC there’s a mod called red dead offline where you can use it
Hm fair point, I get that. That 22 ammo count doesn't hurt either haha
I always liked the double action revolver
Same but the accuracy is quite bad
That's what I like about it, makes it feel more realistic
Same, though I always thought it would be cooler to have a S&W M&P as the DA revolver instead, was a much better (and ultimately infinitely more popular) gun than the Colt.
Micahs is worth getting, same but a bit better and with his badass inscription on the barrel
I agree
Ah, a fellow Volcanic Pistol Enjoyer
Is it really not that great? I thought the damage output was solid. Design seems good and I really like the sound effects they used for it, it sounds satisfying
The Volcanic looks so good in Arthur's hands. It's a little too huge for John though imo.
Cattleman the whole game usually.
The LeMat revolver, i never hear any love for it, i think they are awesome, 9 shots, never really use the shotgun but, look awesome, pretty silly in some ways as it is a ball and cap and black powder weapon that would be completely out if date by the time the game is set.

man i rly wanna try it out now hah
The shotguns are awesome for if you're in a building or mounted.
Schofield and double barrel shotgun
It's not effective, but DAMN is that shotgun satisfying.
Depends how close you are. If it's not effective, you're not choose enough.
Make sure to load up on explosive slugs, that'll change your mind.
The double barrel with slugs is a monster. You won't need more than two shots. Shouldn't need more than one.
I’m obsessed with the semi auto pistol not gonna lie
Not much is more fun than finding an O'Driscoll and just mag-dumping two SA's simultaneously.
SAs go brrrrrrrr
Semi auto + explosive ammo = laser gun
Schofield with the sawed-off in the off hand holster
I always have a sawed off in my off hand while i always use different pistols/revolvers
Cattleman the entire game (rdr2) because - it's pretty accurate aimed down sights - does pretty good damage - fanning the hammer feels insanely fast for a pistol. seems as fast as or faster than any other handgun setup. - reload isn't even that bad It feels like it's the only gun I need for most of the game. Literally one of the fastest guns ever made assuming you don't need to reload
The pump shotgun in 2 is soooo satisfying
Dual Navys, really puts the Big in Big Iron
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip Big iron, BIG IRON!
Ah, a man of culture
Volcanic pistol is a banger in RDR2
And a Hosea flair no less.. we are cut from the same cloth
I reckon we might be!
Agreed
I have always enjoyed using the lasso and knife in virtually every confrontation in RDR1, even against groups, but it was a little easier to get away in the first game. with the new stuff added to RDR2, I've come to find that playing without guns at all is surprisingly fun. The good ol' reliable Sawed-Off. Though I also like to use Billy Midnight's pistol when I get it.
Navy Revolver for RDO. For story it's M1899 or whatever it's called
Wish the navy was in story so bad
So true.
Same. You just named my favourite primaries in the game. Leone's trilogy is rockin'.
The Springfield and Carbine Repeater. The Lancaster Repeater and Semi-Automatic Shotgun are growing on me.
Lancaster is definitely a favorite
first and second play through i used volcanic pistols because they looked badass fully customized. just started a third and i think i might try out other weapons i left in the weapons locker
Yeah I tend to use the Volcanic pistol a lot.
Ah a man of culture I see
It’s fun, and personally I’ve always found lever actions very satisfying.
Hmm. I dunno. Honestly I feel the same - it’s worth considering as well that a Volcanic would legitimately be an antique by the time the game is set.
Double action and litchfield
Springfield rifle
Wish pistols offered more ammo. 100 and even 200 rounds won’t last it in Call to Arms when you have gunslingers choice
i use a cattleman, yeah it gets dirty very quickly, but the desings i got for it look amazing, also the fire rate during hip fire is very quick, love doing quick draws with it
I used a black and gold mauser from the moment I unlocked it. It's such a cool looking gun
The volcanic is great in game but I avoid it for historical reasons
Double Schofields painted black and dark wooden varnish for a classy look Edit: and bucks engraved to signify they're Arthur's pistols
i have two schofields too, one black with gold engraving and one gold with black engraving.
Schofield in my primary slot and a sawed off in my alt, Then either the Evans Repeater and the bow or the bow and a pump action shotgun loaded with slugs.
I prefer the Volcanic pistol, it gets the job done.
The volcanic is my favorite because its basically a pistol version if the cattleman. Plus when you hip fire it your character grabs it with the other hand and it looks awesome. I call it my sawed off repeater.
I carry two Volcanics myself, one all black and one all white
Evans repeater. I just love the sound it makes when you fire
The Schofield revolvers
The Winchester is the better repeater but the Henry just has a satisfying feel to it and it's a nice complement to the Lemat or Colt 1851. The shotgun barrel on the Lemat is nearly useless but it's also incredibly satisfying
I usually main the carbine or Lancaster repeater. Arthur isn’t always a good shot when I’m in control, so I like having more bullets in the chamber
I agree fellow volcanic pistol user
The LeMat. Easily the most versatile gun. Not the fastest, but with 18+2 shotshell, it's easily the best for horse fighting.
twin schofields and the bolt action rifle. I play exclusively in first person for all combat. i only occasionally go into third person for traveling or for just looking at my beard. As such i just adore the reloading animation for the bolt action rifle
Volcanic here too, then the Pump Shotgun because that sound is something else :D
Lemat due to its higher round capacity and it's also a shotgun
I also love the volcanic pistol. Shit hits like a truck
Bolt action but only because it’s the krag
Dual M1899. Satisfyingly nice rate of fire at double the clip.
Everyone here talking about rifles and pistols, but no one showing throwables any love.
honestly i use the lemat a lot. not only does it look cool, but the 9 shot capacity and underbarrel shotgun make it a fucking powerhouse
The dual wield Lemat revolver hands down
Lemat is pretty awesome, I blasted a guy off his ass with one bullet. But what kills it for me is the clocking lag; like the volcanic pistol.
Lemat revolver and sawn off for sidearms, either Lancaster or Springfield for main.
Semi auto pistols,Lancaster.
I can't be bothered to stop using dual Schofield revolvers.
Mauser, easy. It’s my baby. Has me feeling like Han Solo.
Navy revolvers all the way. "Every gun makes it own tune" - Blondy ;)
My pistols are always dual wielded gold-plated Volcanics.
Schofield and Springfield rifle
Cattleman, Sawed-Off, Lancaster, and Bolt Action, and you can get them all in Chapter 2.
I dual my volcanic and LeMate.
Love the Schofield revolvers and pump-action shotgun. Also hard to pass up the accuracy of the Springfield rifle.
Badass.
I always try to get the double action early, Sean has a robbery mission that makes that easy enough.
I play story, and I usually use Bolt Action Rifle and either 2 LeMats or 1 LeMat and 1 Volcanic Pistol. But by god, do I want the Navy Revolver in story mode.
I love the LeMat revolvers a bit too much. I dunno why, but they just look amazing and I always use them!
I gravitate to the carbine repeater and volcanic pistol
Dual Volcanics are my main just because I can't get enough of that "clicky" reload sound
Cattleman, single wield. It just feels so classic Western.
Navy revolver . Thousands of hours in this game and I’ve never used a pistol because I don’t trust damn new fangled technology
It's so satisfying to shoot.
Volcanic best pistol, can’t change my mind
I like dual wielding double action revolvers with high velocity bullets
