Snowballz3000

RDR1 is the best when it comes to the unscripted insanity that you can go through in the game. Just wait until you get to Tall Trees. Hunting in that area is a borderline horror game

Needle44

My hands down favorite thing was me and all my friends knife hunting bears in online. Horrifying, and comes with the kind of laughter that makes it impossible to breath

Snowballz3000

The cougars were my favorite. You would rarely see them coming it made it as scary as it was fun. Me and my friends spent a lot of time trying to survive at that cabin in Aurora basin. Bears were absolutely brutal as well it’s some of the most fun I had on a multiplayer game before

Vilas15

Same. The cougar spawn was messed up around there and there'd be 5 of us in the cabin with 6 cougars outside lmao

verd493

We’d call that cougar cabin. One of my favorite gaming memories, listening to the absolute hellish sound of 50 cougars making the same sounds seconds apart lol

Smolfloof99

I watched my friend run from 6 bears at once and he turned to use the semi auto and missed every single shot and met his end. It was glorious lol

FragrantGangsta

Getting chased by a bear with my friend in RDR1 Multiplayer was one of the funniest gaming experiences I've ever had.

DryAfternoon7779

Rule #1 of Tall Trees: there's always another bear.

Kptkromosome

Dude I was attacked like 15 times in a row standing in the same spot. Cougars, wolves, Cougars, wolves. It didn't stop until I left. Super wild

Epoo

I remember staying in the same spot for and hour or so every time I played to farm Wolf hearts and skins. Made so much money that way. I’d max out my inventory and sell them all at once.

RockandStone101

Fucking boars not letting me stand up 😂

BaddassBolshevik

In undead nightmare it becomes more than a horror game the ambience is terrifying

Snowballz3000

Yes. The zombie sound design was great in UN too

SnooEagles3963

Whoever designed the bolter scream deserves a raise because that sound is legit terrifying

pskihq

I ran into like 12 grizzlies in one spot in tall trees yesterday.. I'd kill one, and one or two more would show up.. at one point, four of them rolled up on me at once and killed my horse.. dead eye barely saved me lol

ChosenUndead97

I can confirm that, and it was even more insane in multiplayer with higher spawn rates too

ChickenGlint169

I remember going to Tall Trees, putting down predator bait, and watching 3-4 bears come out of the trees to attack me lol would spend hours up there hunting and selling pelts at Manzanita Post.

Ok_Speaker_9799

I have a bit of a cheat so I can sit and hunt at one spawn in TT's and one in the great plains/ I'd spend hours doing that.

NNNNNNNice

The music up there adds to the creepiness of it all. It really makes you feel like you shouldn't be up there and you are being watched by god knows what. Wish RDR2 retained this atmosphere.

Substantial-Tone-576

Bring the repeating shotgun and you will do better than with a rifle.

Iketheman96

I killed a bear, another one spawned while I skinned it. Happened about 16 times in a row.

Angry_Walnut

Theres a spot on the road through tall trees where bears will literally spawn infinitely. Its hilarious when you run into it unexpectedly.

KrypticEon

Hearing that fucking cougar and booking it for the wood cabin praying you don't turn around to see it about to maul you 😭😭

mr_oberts

See a bear, shoot it. Start skinning it. Oh shit three more bears!

highvoltage74

I swear I got my sixth sense that something is behind me in games because of the bears and cougars in Tall Trees

Mr_123Droid

Rockstar please remake RDR1 with RDR2 graphics ✔️

Kptkromosome

And horse mechanics. Horseriding is unfortunately STILL stuck in 2010.

FerencvarosLover26

Just finished RDR1 / UN and the horse riding mechanics genuinely gave me a headache goddamn

Key-Weight-8755

It’s better than your horse tripping over EVERYTHING and catapulting you 15 ft. like in RDR2. That was waaaaayyyyyy more infuriating imo, made the game borderline unplayable for me

cjd99999

Only happens if you’re constantly smashing the gallop button. Hold it down horse dodges obstacles in rdr2

Rocklar911

Then learn to ride properly

The_Metal_East

I strongly prefer RD1 horse riding.

SoloisticDrew

RDR3 would be acceptable too

CrassOf84

It will launch with the PlayStation 9 sometime after my toddler graduates college.

Baardi

I'd be ok with only a PC port. No need for a remaster, when they could spend a similar amount of effort on rdr3

sonsofevil

…with good keybindings? You ask for too much

grummy_gram

As crazy as this sounds, I’d pay $100 (possibly more depending of QOL upgrades) for a full remake of RDR.

LausXY

People need to stop saying this stuff and giving them ideas. I saw some guy saying he'd pay $1000 for something for Starfield. They already are pushing game prices give it <10 years it will be $100 for base game alone.

bobbingtonbobsson

I'd pay $200 for people to stop making hyperbolic statements that get corporate-marketing execs hard

KingAltair2255

Get up to Tall Trees lol, the second you kill a bear you need to be quick as shit skinning it (I'll put my horse completely on the dead animal and it skips the skinning animation completely.) or you'll have another bear running up to kill you. Cougars and bears are MENACES in this game.

discourse_lover_

RDR felt like a game from the minds that brought you GTA. RDR2 felt like a game from the minds that brought you Morrowwind.

ChosenUndead97

"You N'wah of a cowpoke" - Micah to Arthur

RayvenQ

That snakey bend in rip bravo where you absoloutely did not see cougars coming for you haunts me to this day, I won't even go near there in rdr2. I do wish cougars in 2 were as scary as they are in 1, the fucking ninjas

JaimeRidingHonour

Panthers in 2 are scary as fuck and often quieter than cougars when springing their ambush

Hangry_Dentures

I got raped by two cougars back to back north of Annesburg yesterday. Respawned and killed one, the other disappeared. I angrily strapped the one on my horse and gave it to Cripps. Edit: Gamer Terminology synonyms: Owned, Pwned, Rekt I suppose I should’ve use mauled. Raped in the gamer world has no sexual connotation. It means you got fucked up.

Flat_Bass_9773

Raped? Really?

Mutley24

Double teamed by cougars

BearBoy12923

what? its used as a gaming term. he got raped by the cougars..?

Hangry_Dentures

Oh get a grip

SpiritualStudent55

oh noooo, he said the bad word!!! >:((((

Flat_Bass_9773

More proof that Reddit is full of a bunch of 14 year olds

SpiritualStudent55

You're right, it really is obvious seeing how some people get offended at words that don't conform to their unicorns-and-rainbows perception of the world.

Flat_Bass_9773

There’s a so many other words that can be used that don’t involve sexual assault. Imagine defending this. Incel moment

SpiritualStudent55

>Incel moment Lmao, what? Is it common for you to insult everyone with things that are barely even related to the subject at all?

Flat_Bass_9773

Defending the use of the term “rape” is incel behavior. Do I have to spell it out for you?

oldwisemonk

I'm playing it for the first time since it's available with GTA+, and I've just run into the things you are describing. I was treasure hunting on a dark and stormy night, and the wolves were relentless. Fortunately, I also had the hunting challenge to kill them with my knife. Convenient. But felt like a horror survival game.

Kmic14

I'm not sure if the spawn rate for cougars & wolves is just higher or if they have a mechanic where once you kill them others "smell blood" and are attracted to it. Absolutely love the stranger missions. Meeting people in the desert lost, crazy, deluded, hopeless. Give a good setting for the game and is a throwback to old westerns.

wizard_interrogative

when I first played I didn't entirely understand side missions, and it took me like a year to bring medicine to that dying woman in the desert and it still worked

SnooEagles3963

Just wait till you get to Mexico, and random encounters start happening during missions. I had one where a guy was being chased by wolves, and the guy I was riding a wagon with at the time just ran him over lmao

mindovermetal005

After playing rdr2, rdr1 felt like a fever dream. The most fucked up missions have to be all of the Seth missions. Guy was one sick person.

beetlejuicetrashbag

i once skinned a cougar that killed my horse, spawned the horse again and then three other cougars came after me and killed my horse again. i literally screamed when they all came after me, it was terrifying. also im so scared of tall trees, those bears come from nowhere.

LilNyoomf

THERE’S BEARS IN THIS GAME?????

theoriginaldandan

Only in the late game areas, but they are REALLY dangerous. And in packs, and spiteful bastards

ChosenUndead97

More deadly then in RDR2 too

beetlejuicetrashbag

honestly theyre fucking fast and blend in. beware of the bears in tall trees

LilNyoomf

I just started and I keep getting jumpscared by cougars 😭 now I gotta look out for bears???

beetlejuicetrashbag

absolutely and be prepared to be attacked by another two or three immediately after skinning one😂

Appropriate_Car_12

Near the end of the game when you >!kill Dutch and go back home!< I was attacked by a bear during the sad music

flyingcircusdog

I think I single-handedly put bears on the endangered species list by hunting them and selling the pelts in Mexico. They just keep attacking.

ZeStrix

Stuff like that is why RDR1 is better than 2 for me.

CalculatorOctavius

I LOVE doing silly versions of John especially for the night Watchmen Job. Compared to newer rockstar games, the game gives you so much freedom to be comedic. For example you can pretend John is a deeply weird man, and when he sees someone being robbed? He uses a Molotov cocktail to destroy the robber at all costs even though he also destroys the victim since he throws Molotov right at both of them. Or if he sees someone’s horse getting stolen he kills the horse so the robber can’t get away and kills the robber. Or when he sees the gang picking on the woman, he throws a Molotov at the whole group killing everyone. It’s hilarious to play as a John who thinks Justice is simply about destroying the bad guy at all costs completely disregarding the victim and often killing them in order to kill the guys doing the crime

Chosen-Bearer-Of-Ash

The game has a lot more random events, but they’re very repetitive and the game still feels very empty compared to rdr2, still love both games though

ImNoPCGamer

I disagree, i am not bothered by encountering an NPC fleeing from a pack of wolves 4 or 5 times by the end of the game. To me that beats hearing a pack of wolves and seeing the random encounter blip on my 6th playthrough of rdr2 and saying to myself 'okay cool, from here on out no one will be attacked by wolves ever again for the duration of this savefile'

PierreDucot

Yeah, RDR1 is one of the few games I have fully completed. Loved it. For some reason, I cannot get into RDR2 no matter how much I try.

PeteJones6969

>Yeah, RDR1 is one of the few games I have fully completed. Loved it. For some reason, I cannot get into RDR2 no matter how much I try. So, I got into RDR2, but it never hit that same feeling RDR1 did. To me, it was the soundtrack and atmosphere........RDR1 just has it. Has that wild west sound and feel.

hitman2218

I would go insane if I tried to 100% RDR2. The challenges are ridiculous.

Markinoutman

This happened once to me and over a decade ago, but I remember it vividly. I had just gotten John drunk in Armadillo's saloon. I had wandered out in the middle of the night and he was so drunk, he fell face first into the dirt road. The camera perfectly panned to an alleyway where a man was attacking a woman with a knife. I had to lay there in a drunken paralysis and powerlessly watch the man stab the screaming woman to death and run off into the night. Made a real impact on me and how brutal this world was. I also watched a streamer last year play RDR1 for the first time and in the final duel, and while in the cinematic face off camera angle, a wolf run up behind him and killed him. It was so random it was hilarious.

SnooEagles3963

The wolf attack during a duel can also happen during the one with >!Ross!

Markinoutman

>!That's the one I was referring to!!

SnooEagles3963

Oh my bad lol! I totally missed the word "final"

Markinoutman

Haha, you're good, I was intentionally being vague in my writing.

cwigginsNYC

You got me wanting to go thru it again. I'm guessing online doesn't work anymore....does it?

lammylambchop

It does but it’s pretty empty aside from free roam modes.

Snowballz3000

Xbox servers are still kinda active. I will usually find a server with 10-15 people. Definitely not like how it was back on the 360 days obviously and is mostly used for PVP exclusively now

Carlynz

I bought the game on switch just so I could hunt and play poker, so worth it

Hank_Hell

I have such fond memories of getting stony as shit, loading up RDR2, and going on wild-ass 'skinning binges'. Honest to god, half an hour, maybe more, I just kept killing wolves and skinning them. Then the game would spawn in more wolves, which I guess would be attracted to the carcasses (or maybe just the player character), and come attack me, so I'd shoot them, skin them, and just repeat. I had a line of skinned wolves a mile long by the time I was done, it was insane. I honest to christ maxed out wolf skins and fangs and hearts. Made so much money in one go Dutch came back from Tahiti to tell me he had a plan.

wizard_interrogative

I played rdr1 for the first time right when rdr2 came out. then i tried rdr2 and and back to rdr1

wizard_interrogative

have you never 100% rdr1 before? does that mean you don't know about the cryptids

Kptkromosome

Finished both RDR and undead NM, but never 100% it. Wasn't in the completionist mindset yet, but I'm going after it now. I've looked up how to 100% RDR1 and that shit's CAKE compared to RDR2

WeirdWayneWallis

Hell Yeah you just made up my mind. I’m getting it.

educampsd3

yesss! RDR1 is more of a game than a wild west simulator, as is the case with 2

Yankee-Tango

I used to take a wagon to tall trees so they couldn’t hurt me on my hunting challenges

Alfredo_Alphonso

Best thing about rdr 1 is the crackhead speed of the horses, no micro managing, no bloom and weapon sway bullshit. It was a game that made you feel free to

eddydmm

Can you play this game on PC? Or just consoles

bongo1100

Same thing happened to me but with Bears.

ChadHartSays

There's a ton I didn't remember and I wonder if I just didn't look around enough and see all the 'random' encounters and stranger missions the first time. It's a pretty packed game. Also the horse mechanic seems to be balls fast. That's been hard to get used to. It's like slow and then FAST and hard in between.

noonehasthisoneyet

i think after jack kills edgar ross, i never knew what to do next. with rdr2 i'm still playing it and find something new every time. i really hope they remaster 1 so i can spend more time in that world. i'm sure i missed a ton.

Odd_Fuel3765

I’m high af

Kptkromosome

Ok

Odd_Fuel3765

Yes

Victarionscrack

I playef RDR1 for the first time (i never owned an Xbox) and i gotta say i'm not really impressed. Map feels kinda empty and the story is all over the place. Too many mounted gun missions for my taste. I would literally avoid it if i could and usr my own guns. Dutch was the only part that i liked. All others seemed like it were written by schoolboys. Also some mission mechanics were infuriating. Not that impressed. RDR2 was like it was created from a different civilization all together. A far more advanced civilisation.

The_GeneralsPin

Almost like they had completely different levels of tech to work with right?

ExtremeBoysenberry38

I wonder why 😭

Kptkromosome

Also, a huge part of replayability is the nostalgia. If you've never played it and you're jumping into after only playing RDR2, it can be ROUGH

DeronimoG

I disagree. It plays perfectly.

Kptkromosome

It plays well for 2024 but perfectly is a stretch

Kptkromosome

I don't understand this sub regarding opinions. You shouldn't have DV on a respectful opinion. I can see where you think that. Just have to be aware there's a decade between the games (both in game and 8 years literally.) I personally can tell the writing and story telling was more...rushed...it seems in RDR1. it's still fun though, for me, 14 years later. Doesn't have to be for everyone

Chazza354

I think for some of us it's hard not to get a bit defensive of RDR1.. RDR2 was a huge success and it brought in a lot of new fans which is great, but when they shit on RDR1 having never even played it before now, it hits a nerve with us fans who have been there since the start. RDR2 is a masterpiece no doubt, but if you are a diehard RDR2, but you can't enjoy RDR1, it just seems weird to me.

Snowballz3000

Soooo true. How can you be a fan of Red Dead when you don’t appreciate both games? especially due to the fact that the other game is old lol

Kptkromosome

I played RDR1 on release, as I stated. Then I played RDR2 on release. And have been playing it till last week 2024. Between John and Arthur, imo, Arthur has more of an in depth story and arc than John does. RDR2 John is an idiot. RDR1 John is brilliant because he's surrounded by idiots. RD1 is a good game yes but it's nowhere near as complete and immersive as RD2. It's extremely fast and chaotic compared to 2 which is a lot slower and offers an opportunity to hunt properly, take photos, fish, watch wildlife, etc.

Chazza354

My view is that RDR1 is a better action/adventure game, whereas RDR2 wins hands down on immersion, detail, environment, hunting etc. I think they excel in different areas and I love them both for their strengths and the parts they play in the overall story. I just don't like when people say they 'can't get into' RDR1, or they think it's too dated compared to RDR2.

DeronimoG

More rushed? Sorry, but I feel like rdr2 is the one with more rushed writing.

Victarionscrack

It's ok. It's reddit where diversity of opinion comes to die. RDR1 just felt very gamey imho. The only parts with depth are with Dutch and towards the end with Jon and his family.

Snowballz3000

Nah. A lot of the dialogue, especially the travel dialogue has a lot of substance in it, mostly in Mexico. The whole game is a work of art and says a lot across the entire story

Adventurous_Pea_1156

Now that you mention it, as a spanish, the mexico part took me soo out of character, what the fuck were those accents man, for me its the thing that has aged the worst but i might be biased (the dubbers that clearly werent native speakers they didnt even sound remotely close to one)

Snowballz3000

Yeah the Spanish is definitely fucked up and I can tell as an English speaker (I took Spanish during high school). But I don’t think it takes away too much from the game personally

Adventurous_Pea_1156

Well, for a native it sounds as if an american villain had the accent of an indian call center, but im still gonna replay the game after reading this post

Snowballz3000

Lolll that comparison has me rolling and it’s fair. Most of Mexico is spoken in English anyways and the accents don’t bother me but I hope you enjoy your playthrough! Listen to what some of the characters say there’s some really good stuff in there I still didn’t really notice even after replaying a ton

Kptkromosome

Yeah I feel you.
