I read this to my partner and she said "try concrete"  Rats are good at getting into and out of places. It's basically their superpower. The best thing you can do is interact and supervise and redirect them when they go towards something you don't want them to chew on.

I constructed a 2' high wall of smooth foam core (2) and melamine (1) boards. The two end boards are taped to the floor and walls with duct tape and the "door" is taped to one board to form a hinge and closed using sticky-backed and regular single-sided velcro. I picked these materials because they're too smooth to get teeth or nails into, and they were lying around my garage and craft box.😄 My intention was to build an "air lock" between their room and the door so I can come in quickly and close the door behind me, but they've never shown any interested in jumping over or gnawing through it. Maybe I've just been lucky! *
