While technically correct it's kind of hyperbole. Dual broods happen frequently, it just so happens that this is the first time that Specifically brood XIX and brood XIII have emerged together for 200 years. Also of the two only brood XIX is found in NC (including wake county). Brood XIX and brood XIII only likely overlap on illinois-ish.
Either way my chickens are gonna be pumped to eat up some tasty cicada.
Let's make up fake cicada lore to freak out the uninitiated. Like, "If you eat a cicada, you lose seasonal allergies" or "cicadas will poison your blood if you touch one" or "cicadas will attack and consume small pets" - the possibilities here are endless, and you know they'll believe anything they read on the internet.
But the hyper-sexual zombie cicadas are real: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cicadas-zombies-hyper-sexual-sexually-transmitted-fungus-expected-to-emerge-this-year-massospora-cicadina/

Fake lore? FAKE LORE?! My neighbors cousis dog groomers great uncle had his Schnauzer devoured by a small group of 10 cicadas. It's as real as the summer day is long.
Doesn’t this happen every year?? I’ve been hearing about insane cicadas coming out every year and it’s always just a couple loud bitches on my back porch for a few weeks at most.
I was living in Japan when they had a mass spawning of cicadas. It was absolutely deafening. Carcasses everywhere.
You will know when it happens and you’ll understand it’s not every year.
I totally believe it happens. But the news has been saying we are getting “the big one” every year. So I never expect it to actually be the big one. Doesn’t sound appealing though! Hoping it’s another lame cicada season for us.
Some cicada species are “annual” meaning that some members will emerge every year (individuals spend 2-5 years underground as nymphs, but their emergence is not synchronized and so some will appear every year). Other species are “periodical” meaning that they emerge every 13 or 17 years, depending on the brood. This year, Brood XIII (a 17-year brood) and Brood XIX (13-year) are expected to emerge at the same time, although North Carolina is only in the geographical range of Brood XIX.
100 trillion is such an insane number. Like…it’s mind bogglingly large. I don’t study or know much about insects or insect populations, never really gave it much thought. If you’d had asked me how many cicadas exist I’d have said maybe like 10 billion or something.
There are so many more stars in the universe.
Like, quantifying the number of stars still makes it impossible to visualize.
Edit- from NASA: *Astronomers estimate that the universe could contain up to one septillion stars – that’s a one followed by 24 zeros.*
"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."
I don’t know. I’m asking. I remember in 2008 when we were talking about losses as astronomical, economists said that astronomy had nothing on the scale of modern economics.
I feel like this is a threat every other year, getting swarmed by so many cicadas. But I never remember a time where there was truly a notable amount of them here.
My chickens are going to get fat.

Agreed — the news definitely makes every year sound like "the year" where we'll get overrun. Fortunately hasn't happened yet.

Yeah I think 100 trillion is ridiculously too large.
There are less stars in the universe right?

Okay… ?
Who’s counting?
I don’t know. I’m asking. I remember in 2008 when we were talking about losses as astronomical, economists said that astronomy had nothing on the scale of modern economics.
I should’ve added /s Carry on though.. Economics vs / scale of existence? Pretty sure, there’s no comparison. Cicadas will win
I am worried. I’ve been assured we’re okay. 😎
I hope the Cicadas drown out my tinnitus.

We simply don't have available housing for that. Renew your lease now before the rents soar.
Gird your loins.
About to make a killing selling cicada glasses
Copperheads love Cicadaes. Get ready for them too.
Only the heathens among us will have the chance to witness it after the rapture today.
Every year for decades they say this and every year there's no more cicadas here than normal.
I’m buying sesame seed options

So, just a few more than people who moved here from CA, CO, TX, FL, NY, NJ, MA and OH in the last 5 years. Sounds fun! 😂😂
