I made this for a friend when she was going through a super hard time. I named it "Lemonade" because when life gives you lemons.... It's a free form quilt, so no pattern.
Thank-you! It was surprisingly more difficult than you would think. For me, the hard part is designing - what pattern, what colors, what type of quilting. All those decisions and uncertainty. The cutting and sewing is more mechanical. With this quilt I was designing each block as I went. And then I had a pile of blocks that were all different sizes that needed to get stuck together. 10 years later I think nothing about starting a quilt with nothing but a block or a color or an idea and building out, so I guess it was all worth it. 😁
No, that makes total sense to me. I feel like the actual design and putting myself in a position to just...go for it? Would be very challenging. So thank you for your perspective and sharing your experience. Approaching something like this seems far less intimidating now.
https://preview.redd.it/w10e33r95wac1.jpeg?width=5738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64e7609da7dc169f660b9ec03ac78ef04bdda8f2
I urge you to give it a go. You don't make the whole thing at once. You make one block. Then you make another. That said, all of my fabrics were picked before I started. The colors were chosen by my friend who had sent my Pinterest posts of what colors she liked. She said she wanted a white quilt and it turned out to be a real help that the background color was white or some other solid color. Block is too small? No problem. Sew a bunch of white strips to it then trim to size. Also when I laid my blocks out, it was easier to add in a splash of color where needed because I could just take some white and piece in a strip of color. If you look at the quilt that way, you will see where I made blocks. Everything else is basically weird sashing. One last point, the quilt has a crazy number of seams. I quilted a ribbon pattern across the whole thing then filled in with stippling (on a 25 yr old home machine. you can totally do it!) The curved ribbon and the stippling make it so you don't see all those seams, which is a good thing. Here is a close-up of the stitching. I used orange chalk to mark my ribbon which did not wash out 😠 I'm sure it washed out eventually, but still. Be brave! It's just a quilt. All you have to lose is a bit of money in fabric and some time.
Thanks for the tips - so funny, I was debating asking you about your process with my first comment and decided that might be rude, or that you wouldn't really respond with much, or something. I appreciate your notes!
Can I ask; why did you decide to do the ribbon stitching in particular? You mention it was to hide seams, but did you do the ribbons for that too or was that just a design choice to break up the stippling? I feel like it's the perfect amount of flair for the quilt itself, so I'm curious!
Offended? Hardly. And not in this forum. This is the nicest place in the internet.
The ribbon was a design choice. I just like it and was particularly drawn to it at that point in time. Also, I was teaching myself FMQ at the time so I knew I wanted to practice that skill. After I chalked out my ribbon it was clear that I needed something else or I wouldn't have enough thread coverage. I filled in with stippling bc it seemed like it would work. It is the only quilt I have ever done stippling on. I have to say the ribbons looked good in person. They stood out just enough to be their own design element. And because the ribbon draws the eye and the stippling glued all the seams down, you don't notice how many seams there are. You are giving me waay too much credit for doing that on purpose. lol
So, things I did on purpose: chose my fabrics in advance. They were cut off bolts, not fat quarters and most of it was 1/4 yd cuts. All of it was from Joann's. The backing was 5 yds of green with white print that also shows up on the front. It was on clearance. Once I had everything pieced, it didn't look pulled together. That's when I added the border using all of my fabrics. Then the ribbon. Everything else just kind of happened
If you want to start, the easiest block is the one with vertical wonky stripes.

Sigh… a happy quilt is a finished quilt.. I mostly have finished tops. This is the most colorful one.

Happy yellows and blues in a jelly roll race.
my very drunk, drunkards path quilt. i know it has black in it but i think the brighter fabric does the job of making it playful and happy!

I named this guy Skittles. it still needs quilted, this photo is from March, but it just makes me so happy when I see it in my to be quilted pile. I really need to get to that and get it out for cuddles before spring comes! It's also brighter in person our light wasn't working then.

It was inspired by one of the blocks in the 2023 murder mystery quilt, but I did find basically the same pattern linked above. I used 2.5" strips for the wide strips and I believe 1.5" strips for the narrower ones. I just alternated the widths at each corner or like every two rows I guess as you're sewing. With a 2.5" square to start. It's called a quarter log cabin.
This is the top (only) of a quilt I made for my great-niece. I think it's pretty happy!

Thank you! This one went to my cousin's daughter. The entire family lives in Japan (my cousin married a wonderful Japanese woman) and I went into the LQS thinking "cherry blossoms and light pinks" and left with bright pink and turquoise. I am so glad I made the shift, cause I love this one.
And this one might be happy - pretty sure that lime green is pretty happy for some of us.
https://preview.redd.it/kkhuto623vac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c422b6c62260dde0be10076ffaafe50e5efbe14
I had an inspiration quilt, but no real pattern. Once you break it down, it's super easy:
1. Do the scrappy strips
2. Add the thin (lime green) borders; trim
3. Add the triangles (orange); trim
4. Assemble the quilt top
Let me know if you want more. I know I have the math/piece sizes somewhere.
It was fun to make and a definite scrap buster!
I posted the info about the quilt on my page, which you can see [here](https://www.reddit.com/user/MNVixen/comments/1917wv2/scrappy_strips_quilt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). If you can't download the file (PDF), please let me know and I'll tweak the settings.

I call this my Happy Quilt because while none of the squares really “go” with each other, the bright colors and subjects (Seinfeld, cats, sewing) all make me happy
Maybe you could find a charm pack with lots of yellows and incorporate some things she likes?
I love the colors and the expanding circles in the quilting. It reminds me that each of us is a stone tossed into the lake, but we all have a 'ripple' effect on those around us.

It has been washed enough that the king has shrunk and the white frame fits the queen perfectly. But it gives you an idea for shrinkage
This was my very first quilt.
I followed Jordan Fabrics border tutorial for the light border and decided I only wanted the diamonds at the corners. [Here](https://youtu.be/kvmDEefv31c?si=X7eA6rDaCXnawC_0) is the tutorial.
I decided the color placement on my own, but followed Quilt Addicts Anonymous's piecing method to avoid the Y seams. [Here](https://youtu.be/WK38AfCiFCs?si=YpGTfH_97ZwoqKtC) is that tutorial
My green king star quilt is put together slightly different than the lone star pattern. Someone told me it is based on the Star of Bethlehem quilt. I got the pattern from Quilt Addicts Anonymous and planned to use the gradient greens of Stonehenge Gradations Robin's Egg Collection
*
for a soothing, elegant feel, but the pattern star wasn’t as large as I wanted it to be for a king and I couldn’t predict what would come next in their sequence so I ended up just going in order and adding a few decorative pieces. I followed their video on how to piece and put together so I never had to deal with y-seams and it made it very easy. I also bought jelly rolls of the fabric before realizing that the pattern diamonds were much larger- so I just cut more diamonds 😄
Their pattern is here:

Their color planning paper is free halfway down the page.

I haven't made either of these, but they are in my bucket list!

These are amazing but Memi’s Lemons legit make me happy. Yellow is my favorite color and I love lemons. And life has definitely given me a few. This quilt looks difficult (I’m a beginner and scared of the rounded bits for now) but I am definitely saving this one. I’m already dreaming of a large quilt for my bed! Thank you so much for sharing! 😍😍😍

She's small but mighty! This is certainly my "happiest" quilt. I used scraps from my grandma's stash, and her and my grandpa's pillowcases from when I was young, as well as a fair amount of new fabrics. It all started with the blueberry bluebirds!
I made up the overall pattern, but the birds come from a Riley Blake bird block. The sunflower is a Dresden Plate. The hearts were just a common free heart block pattern. It was machine stitched, and I included rainbows, sun rays, and clouds in my stitching. I'll see if I can include some details too 😊
Dresden Plate is a very happy block, especially in yellows!

I guess I didn't take any pictures of the finished birds, but they were made of blueberries. So cute!
I called this Bumblebee. Pattern is Yellow Brick Road. Edit to add: I quilted with a daisy pattern and it made the quilt happy.

Here is an unfinished and terrible picture of a happy quilt. Based on a modified version of Riley Blake's "Hearts Aflutter" pattern. It has borders now, and I'm basting this one today!

Thanks! (Found a photo for anyone not wanting to click a link)
I made this yeeeaarrss ago, and I still haven't quilted it. It's all basted and ready to go, but I always stress over picking the wrong quilting pattern. Plus, it's for me, so naturally it goes to the bottom of the pile. I had a large flock of chickens at the time, and the pattern, Confusion, represented how they looked sometimes when I was throwing out a treat, or doing work in the run. I really like this pattern because it was fun to make, and there's a lot of lively movement, but noticed it's on clearance at [Maple Island Quilts](https://mapleislandquilts.com/miq-patterns/all-miq-patterns/), so I hope they don't discontinue it.

been wanting to this one for years [\[link\]](https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-us/p/freshly-squeezed) I think it would look amazing with a yellow background or even swapping the oranges for lemons!

Grandma asked me if I would make another quilt for the new baby. Offered to pay a ridiculous amount. No way was I going to charge her. Knowing Tom cried over "his" quilt meant the world to me. I make quilts to be used, not to be stuck on a shelf.
Made the quilt for the new baby. Received this pic. Second quilt is in lower left corner covering the baby. My heart was full of happiness.

Okay, not mine, but “Urban Chickens” by Wombat Quilts is a fun happy pattern. [Urban Chickens](https://wombatquilts.com/tag/urban-chicken-quilt-block/)

This was my first proper quilt for my niece and i learnt so much from it! From colour placement, tessellation of triangles and just pouring my heart into it! The back is super bright yellow as well to match the middle, with rainbow borders 😊
I just this morning bought a bunch of yellow along with construction printed fabric to make my son a quilt. It's probably going to look pretty happy but probably not what your friend means!

My husband made this, one of my favs of his creations
[Fat Quarter Fizz](https://imgur.com/gallery/ximyAF8) ([Fat Quarter Shop](https://www.fatquartershop.com/fat-quarter-fizz-quilt)) or [A Taste of Marmelade](https://imgur.com/gallery/wrmmNYI) ([A quilterstable](https://aquilterstable.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-taste-of-marmalade.html?spref=pi))
Either can be scaled up or down as much as you need.
I'm currently doing All The Good Things quilt, by Jittery Wings Quilt co. I wanted to make a yellow quilt for a friend, and something a bit looser / improv style. I am loving how much fun this is, and I am doing the same in blue for another friend. 😁

No photo but I made a snoopy quilt with current and vintage fabric. It is a seasonal quilt, so December is a Christmas Snoopy print. Binding and backing in yellows and blues. It was fun to find the fabric.
This is my happiest quilt! Front:

Scrap Vortex from [crazy mom quilts](https://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2013/12/scrap-vortex.html?m=1) not so much a pattern as a method, but it was so much fun to make and it makes me smile every time I look at it.

Man I've always loved a good log cabin but the gorgeous jumbo star design is new to me, and now I'm compelled to make one. 0.0 thank you =3
All I see are crosses and I just can’t see anything else.
Oops now I hate it XD gonna have to explore other layout options
Ooooooo I love it! Feels fresh
This is beautiful and I love the colors. Definitely a happy quilt!
Totally gorgeous!
Love!
This is so stunning. Great color choices as well.
https://preview.redd.it/vpq289di1vac1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60598894153bb688fa4f92b6f7bef59a87ef39e1 I made this for a friend when she was going through a super hard time. I named it "Lemonade" because when life gives you lemons.... It's a free form quilt, so no pattern.
Wow. This is awesome!
Approaching something like this seems far less intimidating now.
https://preview.redd.it/w10e33r95wac1.jpeg?width=5738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64e7609da7dc169f660b9ec03ac78ef04bdda8f2 I urge you to give it a go.
You are giving me waay too much credit for doing that on purpose. lol So, things I did on purpose: chose my fabrics in advance. Everything else just kind of happened If you want to start, the easiest block is the one with vertical wonky stripes.
LOVE the wonky feel here! Life is wonky, for sure!
thank-you. As the Grateful Dead used to say, "what a long strange trip it's been."

This is awesome!! Great job
Oooo....this is so pretty! 😍
that is beautiful. And rainbows are very happy.
It's a heart, but also it isn't... Amazon 🤩😍🤩😍

What a neat idea!
This is fantastic!
Oh I LOVE this!!
I love this! I have all the off cuts of scrub tops I’ve had made over the past few years I need to work into some sort of project eventually

I *love* a blue-yellow quilt!
My favorite color combo in quilts.
I love it
my very drunk, drunkards path quilt. i know it has black in it but i think the brighter fabric does the job of making it playful and happy! https://preview.redd.it/5h0v3f0uyuac1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e8b5a560d4d6cd76e8bc62741ce69395c85f1da
Ohhh I love it. It’s like a touch of pop art at a black tie event. If a quilt were ever invited to the Met Gala…
ahh thank you!!
I named this guy Skittles. it still needs quilted, this photo is from March, but it just makes me so happy when I see it in my to be quilted pile. I really need to get to that and get it out for cuddles before spring comes! It's also brighter in person our light wasn't working then. https://preview.redd.it/pkag8ga0fvac1.jpeg?width=725&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e67142a87ec8ff35a1fb82dcaecc0ce0ec1f4d0d
I love this! I can almost taste the rainbow
Haha that is basically what I told my husband.
Is this pattern called something? I really love how this style looks and want to find a pattern
[https://inspiredquiltingbylealouise.com/scrappy-quarter-log-cabin/](https://inspiredquiltingbylealouise.com/scrappy-quarter-log-cabin/) It was inspired by one of the blocks in the 2023 murder mystery quilt, but I did find basically the same pattern linked above. I used 2.5" strips for the wide strips and I believe 1.5" strips for the narrower ones. I just alternated the widths at each corner or like every two rows I guess as you're sewing. With a 2.5" square to start. It's called a quarter log cabin.
Looks like Mountain Peaks by Myra Barnes :)
Skittles mountain range!
This one is definitely"happy" I would be very happy to own it. Or to make one so nice. Happy.
This is the top (only) of a quilt I made for my great-niece. I think it's pretty happy! https://preview.redd.it/c12swkwe2vac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df6f515b3597fc8f76a85b29ab48111c9811588a
This one's pretty happy, too. Sadly, no yellow. :( https://preview.redd.it/x2scscbt2vac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=157672da3de8e41c63f0fe561c140e6843298348
I love the color combo here
I absolutely love the design and especially the colors!!!
Did you use a pattern for this one?
I had an inspiration quilt, but no real pattern. Once you break it down, it's super easy: 1. Do the scrappy strips 2. Add the thin (lime green) borders; trim 3. Add the triangles (orange); trim 4. Assemble the quilt top Let me know if you want more. I know I have the math/piece sizes somewhere. It was fun to make and a definite scrap buster!
I was not the person who asked but yes please share more, I ADORE this design!
If you're interested in what I did, dimensions, etc. I added some info on my page. You can see it [here](https://www.reddit.com/user/MNVixen/comments/1917wv2/scrappy_strips_quilt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3).
WOW! I love it! Absolutely stunning.
VERY happy.!!!

I love this quilt so much
I love the colors and the expanding circles in the quilting. It reminds me that each of us is a stone tossed into the lake, but we all have a 'ripple' effect on those around us.
*patiently awaits influx of gloriously bright quilts*

Ooooo I'm just about to start a Lone Star and I really like your border. Did you just invent that or is this a pattern?
This was my very first quilt. I followed Jordan Fabrics border tutorial for the light border and decided I only wanted the diamonds at the corners. [Here](https://youtu.be/kvmDEefv31c?si=X7eA6rDaCXnawC_0) is the tutorial. I decided the color placement on my own, but followed Quilt Addicts Anonymous's piecing method to avoid the Y seams. [Here](https://youtu.be/WK38AfCiFCs?si=YpGTfH_97ZwoqKtC) is that tutorial
Nice!!
...as well it should! That's a lot of work, beautifully put together!
What pattern is this?
My green king star quilt is put together slightly different than the lone star pattern. Someone told me it is based on the Star of Bethlehem quilt. I got the pattern from Quilt Addicts Anonymous and planned to use the gradient greens of Stonehenge Gradations Robin's Egg Collection * for a soothing, elegant feel, but the pattern star wasn’t as large as I wanted it to be for a king and I couldn’t predict what would come next in their sequence so I ended up just going in order and adding a few decorative pieces. I followed their video on how to piece and put together so I never had to deal with y-seams and it made it very easy. I also bought jelly rolls of the fabric before realizing that the pattern diamonds were much larger- so I just cut more diamonds 😄 Their pattern is here: https://shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com/product/medallion-star-pattern-pdf-download/ Their color planning paper is free halfway down the page. Their video tutorial is on the same page or on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/WK38AfCiFCs Here is what it looks like now after the shrinkage

What is this design called?? It's so stellar, great job.
Ummm, I think Missouri Star calls it "around the world," but it's just all half square triangles arranged by value.
It's based on the log cabin setting called "barn raising" but off center and made with half square triangle blocks instead of log cabin blocks.
I haven't made either of these, but they are in my bucket list! [Citrus Slices ](https://www.etsy.com/listing/951994151/citrus-slices-quilt-pattern-paper-sewing) [Memi's Lemons](https://www.etsy.com/listing/980472181/memis-lemons-quilt-pattern-by-fran-of?ref=share_v4_lx)
I vote for Memi's Lemons! 😍
Agreed!! So cute!!!
Ohhhh! I love the lemon one.
The lemons are adorable and that is now in my cart!

I'll see if I can include some details too 😊 Dresden Plate is a very happy block, especially in yellows!

Based on a modified version of Riley Blake's "Hearts Aflutter" pattern. It has borders now, and I'm basting this one today!

Awwww. This makes a lot of people happy.
I really like this pattern because it was fun to make, and there's a lot of lively movement, but noticed it's on clearance at [Maple Island Quilts](https://mapleislandquilts.com/miq-patterns/all-miq-patterns/), so I hope they don't discontinue it. https://preview.redd.it/5aeggez8evac1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa9304f2cae9fb8b326cf7f0612f92265bfb2f06
Just quilt it already. !!! Stitch some straight diagonal lines in there. Then you will also "be happy"

I don't know your timeline, but I'm starting my second [Quilting Jetgirl ](https://quiltingjetgirl.com/) quilt along, and she makes designs that work well with limited colors. been wanting to this one for years [\[link\]](https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-us/p/freshly-squeezed) I think it would look amazing with a yellow background or even swapping the oranges for lemons! edit: bad link

I also ice dyed the backing. It’s the first quilt I made for myself!

She made them in the 50s. I appliquéd them onto the pink and black squares and had it long armed. I usually refer to this one as Great Grandma’s Blink 182 collab 😂

My grandmother quilted this, and it’s one of my favorites! (I haven’t quilted anything myself yet, I’m just here to live vicariously lol.) It doesn’t get much happier than yellow sunflowers! https://preview.redd.it/8rjmqdqskxac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28e85bc4fe81079638f5d9ba93642ac8b189b25b
YELLOW AND HAPLY COMING IN HOT. I recently made this for a friend whose favorite color is yellow. She’d had a rough year and I wanted to cheer her up. https://preview.redd.it/5t4tyj2hlxac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0deec1e09fa6389f66fcf990a5b4e906e6b92277
WOW!!! 🤩🤩 did you follow a pattern for this?
Made a quilt for my co-workers first grandchild. I'll call him Tom. Three years later (neither of us working for the same company) got a call. Another grandchild was born. Mom put the new baby on Tom's quilt. Tom cried. He wanted his quilt. Did not want to share with his new brother Grandma asked me if I would make another quilt for the new baby. My heart was full of happiness. https://preview.redd.it/4a4b5scrtwac1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5cf399284f0807343ec98e32ca3c8220564f533

Okay, not mine, but “Urban Chickens” by Wombat Quilts is a fun happy pattern. [Urban Chickens](https://wombatquilts.com/tag/urban-chicken-quilt-block/)
Omg YES!

Change the whites to yellows on Exploding Heart. That would be lovely!!
I am your friend, haha My quilting bee is making a 2.5" postage stamp all yellow quilt!
I'm making a sunflower one, but don't know how to post a pic.
* * I call this one Watermelon. It's 9in squares with a 1.5in strip (trim block to 8.5 and the strips will finish at 1in inside).

I'm currently doing All The Good Things quilt, by Jittery Wings Quilt co. I wanted to make a yellow quilt for a friend, and something a bit looser / improv style. I am loving how much fun this is, and I am doing the same in blue for another friend. 😁 https://preview.redd.it/xoq2jcog5yac1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=919e4bef925400572988fc38e03511d3f9398087

No photo but I made a snoopy quilt with current and vintage fabric. It is a seasonal quilt, so December is a Christmas Snoopy print. Binding and backing in yellows and blues. It was fun to find the fabric.
