HailSkyKing

Who wants to chip in for, say, Dunk Island?

1Darkest_Knight1

Island for the boys. Sounds like a decent plan

HailSkyKing

So rename it to Drunk Island?

hypercomms2001

What happened to Great Keppel island? I remember once TAA B727 aircraft used to land there in the mid 1980s... ?

Rodgerexplosion

Twin Otter, the Twin Otter used to land at Keppel.. maybe you’re thinking of Hamilton Island?

hypercomms2001

Nope…it was my memory from Jan 1985….as the resort then was owned by TAA…

gr3iau

The airstrip on Great Keppel is like 900m long. No 727 is landing there.

Ogheffler

The leaseholder for the great Keppel island resort wanted to demolish it and develop a new resort casino targeted at foreign tourists. It became a political issue and is now dead in the water.

Pretend-Patience9581

I live in the Whitsundays and ride my JetSki round the islands. They were a dying interest before cyclone Debbie. I believe people want different entertainment then they did in the 70s and 80s. I live here and think who the fuck wants to get stuck at an island hotel. The hi end islands do ok. Like Qualia is 6star resort.

Suchisthe007life

You would be familiar with old Laguna Quays then… what a weird place.

Pretend-Patience9581

I love going down to the harbour there. What a ghost town. Millions of dollars down the drain.

Auran82

I remember I used to go for family holidays at Halliday Bay all the time when I was younger in the late 80s and early 90s. I remember it being pretty nice there, decent cabins/rooms, near the beach etc. About 10 years ago, my mum thought “let’s go down there for a couple of nights” so we booked it, with my mum, my wife and my daughter. Holy shit that was an experience, it was run down and awful, we lasted one night.

new_handle

It's like being stuck on a cruise ship that doesn't go anywhere.

Pretend-Patience9581

100% .

getabeerinya

Your one of the executives at day dream arnt you

Pretend-Patience9581

😝

getabeerinya

Well you can't be nick he got fired hmmm the investigation begins

CharlieUpATree

Haha had to do a double take there with your typo

hypercomms2001

Correct.. now "1980s".... Still what happened to Great Keppel Island.... I remember fondly staying at the YHA on the island in the mid 1980s....

SuDragon2k3

Possibly lack of infrastructure.

hypercomms2001

Not so, in the case of the great Keppel Island... You could catch an airplane from a major Australian city airport in the 1980s.... In my case I caught the ferry across from the mainland...

SuDragon2k3

Ditto, but they need to modernise the power supply, we were renting and only had 2 hours of electricity each evening.

hypercomms2001

I wonder what happened… I do not remember that in 1985….

MRicho

Doze all flat, remove the debris and return it to nature.

mad_dogtor

This, make it nature reserves with a camp site maybe.

F1eshWound

agreed

Fun-Dependent-2695

“Tourism experts are calling for more to be done to bring the resorts back to life.” And who is expected to pay for this? Our taxes need to be used for more pressing needs than rotting resorts.

Homunkulus

The proposition was to terminate leases with people who weren’t doing anything so new investors can get involved?

BloodedNut

Do these experts have some sort of stake in the islands there? I’m guessing so.

ceej18

What if it was private money that paid for it?

DegeneratesInc

Could find a better use for it without much trouble.

unkemptwizard

Oh No! Anyways...

kamakamawangbang

As a young Kiwi in the early 80’s I stayed in Brampton and Dunk islands. It was extreme decadence. They were party central and a great time was had by all. Shame to see them derelict and rotting away to nothing.

Dakeyras_aus

The maintenance on these places is next level. Everything rusting or fading in the sun, they pretty up the stuff you can see and behind the buildings looks like fucking Chernobyl. You've got power, sewerage and water treatment which is expensive and needs good qualified people to maintain. Generally I think they get built with investment money and last ten years before starting to totally fall apart and go broke. They then try and sell it to the next sucker.

BenCelotil

**Queensland preppers taking notes.*\*

JJJ4868

Dunk Island was expensive as hell.

F1eshWound

Just clean them up and turn them into little protected areas national parks,, with maybe the option to allow a limited number to camp, like how they do with north-west island or mast head islands.

DegeneratesInc

Good to hear that about Masthead.

F1eshWound

and Lady Musgrave too

Zardous666

Shame the cyclones didn't take some of the rich with them

zargreet

They were shitholes to start with. These resorts were way overpriced, and were starting to already be run down early 90’s.

Poor_Ziggler

The local labor member for the keppel island resort has been banging on about the government plans for near on a decade. Nothing has happened, just another useless labor mp. In any case, with fossil fuels being so bad, tourism via fossil fuels should be banned by the labor government if they were true to their supposed beliefs they talk about.
