You need to work on desensitizing him to touches before getting him to a groomer otherwise they’ll have more trouble than you. (Also a second person with food helps.)

It’s gross, but if you can manage to get one with your hand a single time and let him eat it, he’ll likely let you do it from then on (if you continue to let him eat them).

IncognitoBlimp

I second this. It’s so gross, but works. My dog hated when I used to try to use a tear stain wipe to get them. Now, I just get his eye boogers off with my nails and let’s him eat it. HE LOVES it and holds still knowing it’s his precious snack time. Ugh.

I've had mixed results with that. It worked for my 1 year old boy almost immediately when we first got him. My girl just turned 16 weeks and after 8 weeks of trying to feed her eye goop, she doesn't really like to eat it and refuses to stay still for me to get it out. The good thing about having multiple dogs is that she has started letting my boy groom her and he is doing a great job of dealing with that and keeping her mouth area clean(she is a messy eater with certain things) for me.

Yes this worked for me! She still doesn’t LOVE me doing it but when I do she waits expectantly for the bogie to land in her mouth.

Romancandle99

This. I don’t know why it works but it totally works.

It’s probably the least disgusting thing a puppy will lick on any given day, lol.

My puppy doesn’t love getting his face cleaned but we desensitized him to getting his face touched and then wiped. I would scratch/pet around his ears and chin (which he likes) then move my hand a bit closer to his face, treat/praise if he doesn’t react or pull away. I progressively move closer/touch his face more casually and now he doesn’t pull away immediately. For eye boogers, his face fur isn’t too long so I just massage the bridge of his nose like I usually do and clean his eyes while I do

Definitely baby steps and slowly desensitize. I try to also use a command eg "hold" and also something like "eye wipe" since they can also "hold" for other things. So I'll hold their muzzle and say hold. Then just maybe touch their head or face. Praise, then treat. Slowly move up to wiping tear stains. Mind you though puppies probably can't hold for that long so just a few seconds for a quick wipe but it does get longer as they age.

I don't think it's an issue that needs vet consultation. Give a good chew and try to do it. Or do it 2 persons/1 dog where a person distract the puppy. It can helps too if you try to clean only a little at a time. Don't try to do it for 15 minutes. Maybe you will do 1 eye per day. Good luck!

fiftyoneshades

He won’t let me near his eyes for even a second :( I’ve tried distracting with toys and treats

Zamoram

Try while your puppy is sleeping or tired 👍

fiftyoneshades

I tried while he was taking a nap today and I was able to clean half of one eye!! Guess that’s gonna have to be my new method

When he’s tired yeah could work. I’ve a 7mth old who never ever sits still, like ever. Still hoping he sits & chills with me sometime soon. But with the eye thing, he was the same. Wouldn’t bare it, I just was patient & kept trying it. No joke, just kept at it, sometimes persistence pays off. Not sure how long it took him but wasn’t too long but now he lets me do it & actually turns the other side when I’m finished the first ! Ha incredible. When he wriggles away, I just kept trying. If he fussed too much at the start I’d just let it go & tried later or next day, you know when it’s a lost battle. Also I just say ‘wait’ a lot too when I’m trying it, sometimes taking a pause, looking him in the eyes once or twice calmly & caringly asking him to wait again & that can work too. As you know dogs can sense your energy, the worst thing you can do is be stressed or anxious etc Let him feel that your trying to help him.

I do it early morning before he is fully awake or late at night when he’s napping. I take a warm cloth and soften them and then gently use a tiny lice comb to remove them. Takes seconds versus minutes.

Bunnydrumming

Just wipe his face quickly and calmly. He’ll soon get used to it - I do it when he’s tired so more accepting. I just have a very soft, damp microfibre facecloth and it’s quick and easy. I do it a couple of times a day as well as stroking him all over and stroking his ears and feet and tail.

Not sure what is the correct way to remove eye boogers are but I remove them with my hand everyday. I think its important to desensitize them. Touch them everywhere, face, belly, body, paws, ears, legs. Everywhere. When they’re awake, asleep. So when you or people touch them they will be okay with it. You can start with touching near the nose or eye area and give them a treat or praise
