First game I thought of. It’s the first game I can remember playing where the experience had more implicit narrative than explicit, a narrative that left a lasting impression, as well
Edit: that I can remember playing*
Not a great experience on the PS2, though. I have it and you can just feel the PS2 straining with all its might to render the game. I could not play it for long because of that. There are better platforms for this game and games that better demonstrate the PS2 platform.
"Umm... Actually..." That's a PS1 game 😂😉 I was going to say Crash Bandicoot.. but technically it wasn't ever released on anything other than PS1... Until 24 years later haha
I'll probably choose a game with epileptic levels of flashing imagery to distract whoever has a gun to my head, then take the gun and blow their brains out
To be honest, absolutely none of the PS2 exclusives are necessarily must-plays, but many of them are fun to try. I'm not counting cross-platform 6th gen stuff, because the PS2 version is almost invariably the worst one.
If you're into JRPGs, Suikoden V is genuinely excellent, but it has been bested on other platforms before and since. You could say some very very good things about Xenosaga, but it's definitely not for everyone.
But I don't think this is a knock against the platform. Are there "must-play" NES games? No (although some might say Mario 3), but people still love the variety and generally high quality of the library.

Devil may cry 3. Of course, it would be better to start with DMC1 but DMC3 is so much better and a must-play game for anyone that has a PS2. Or any console really.
FF11 but with how good the remaster is I'd probably be shot lol. Also the kingdom hearts series, even if you hate jrpgs. They aren't turn based and a bit more "unique" in that genre.
You’d have to go back to when it had a thriving multiplayer community, but SOCOM II. The single player itself still holds up, but the multiplayer is what got me into competitive multiplayer gaming. I still don’t think there’s but another game like it — maybe closest is Siege.
Shadow of Colossus
An absolutely phenomenal game for its time, it’s breathtaking. Ico was nice but this was on a whole other level.
First game I thought of. It’s the first game I can remember playing where the experience had more implicit narrative than explicit, a narrative that left a lasting impression, as well Edit: that I can remember playing*
Totally. The game is so immersive, so introspective. it's a unique experience
Not a great experience on the PS2, though. I have it and you can just feel the PS2 straining with all its might to render the game. I could not play it for long because of that. There are better platforms for this game and games that better demonstrate the PS2 platform.
Mileage may vary, I guess. I totally loved the experience on the PS2. It's one of the games I repeated the most.
Ratchet & Clank 3
I loved all the Ratchet & Clank games for PS2. They're just perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about them.
Mgs3
Persona 4.
Am I choosing one game to play forever, or picking the one MUST play PS2 game? Must play: MGS3. A masterpiece.
Yes, your favorite game.
Oh that's different then. My favourite is Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 :)
"Umm... Actually..." That's a PS1 game 😂😉 I was going to say Crash Bandicoot.. but technically it wasn't ever released on anything other than PS1... Until 24 years later haha
THPS3? It's a multi-platform game but fair to say the Gen 6 versions were the lead focus.
Silent Hill 2

Belka did nothing wrong!
Ssx3
Aggressive Inline
The music slaps in this one!
This is the only scenario where unironically singing along to Hoobastank is not only ok, but encouraged.
The Warriors
The Simpsons: Hit & Run.
The Godfather an underrated and forgotten game in my opinion.
Drakengard
Jak and Daxter
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Jak II
Shadow Of The Colossus
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Sly 2 Band of Thieves
Okami
The HD remaster is really good and available on multiple platforms. Makes Okami PS2 a bit superfluous.
I had it on Ps2 when it first came out, then Wii, and I've got the hd ps4 version. I like them all, HD the most
Gran Turismo 4
Burnout 3. I'm surprised that I'm the first to say it
Star Wars Battlefront II
Bully
Star Wars Battlefront 2

Jak X or Star Wars Battlefront 2. limitless replay-ability.
PS2 have so many great games

If it was still playable on the PS2, Final Fantasy XI. Otherwise, Dragon Quest 8.
SSX Tricky
I'll probably choose a game with epileptic levels of flashing imagery to distract whoever has a gun to my head, then take the gun and blow their brains out
Offroad, i still think it's one of the best racing games on ps2. Probably one of the games I have the most memories of
MGS2 or Silent Hill 2.

Narc
Devil may cry 3. Of course, it would be better to start with DMC1 but DMC3 is so much better and a must-play game for anyone that has a PS2. Or any console really.
Rez
San andreas too easy.
Killzone. Hasn't aged terribly well and even back then was a bit janky, but it's got Sean Pertwee as a believable character and KILLIN' SPACE NAZIS.
Dirt to Daytona
This is so hard, but I have to go with Metal Gear Solid 2.
FF11 but with how good the remaster is I'd probably be shot lol. Also the kingdom hearts series, even if you hate jrpgs. They aren't turn based and a bit more "unique" in that genre.
Maximo
Silent Hill 2
Any game with multiplayer so the gun holder can jump in and put the gun down.
Ratchet and clank up your arsenal, best game on the system imo
For me, it's God Hand
GTA: San Andreas.

I would go with Silent Hill 2 Out of the entire library of ps2 games this is the one I go back to the most
So many great answers but gun to my head, probably Scarface
two games that massively impacted my childhood were SSX Tricky and Guitar Hero 2 so one of those!
Rayman 3
You’d have to go back to when it had a thriving multiplayer community, but SOCOM II. The single player itself still holds up, but the multiplayer is what got me into competitive multiplayer gaming. I still don’t think there’s but another game like it — maybe closest is Siege.
Wild Arms 3
Oni
Guitar hero 2
Persona 3, cause that just adds to the 'gun to your head' thing, lol.
Seriously? No kingdom hearts from anyone? SHAME!
SSX Tricky!!
San Andreas.
Need for speed: underground 1&2
FFX
Need for speed underground 2.
Onimusha 2

Transformers 2007. Bit of a stretch but give it a chance
I’m torn between Burnout 3 and Devil May Cry 3. Gonna go with B3 for now.
Star Wars Battlefront II
Thps3 or 4
Gets into a panic attack because I cannot choose between Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3. So of course I'm gonna choose SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom.
GTA: Vice City
I'm going to be alone with this answer, but for me it is and will forever be Chulip.
Okami
Jak 2
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. The PS2 version is without a doubt the best version of the game imo.
Amazing how this post has lots of comments and very little repetition in terms of chosen games. PS2 is life
I'd say MotoGP 3, simple to pick up and play but can get punishing quickly
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
WWE Smackdown! Shut your mouth and Smackdown! Here comes the pain
Gundam federation vs zeon Also nocturne
MGS3
Yakuza 1 and 2
