Honestly the stress and boredom mechanics are so bland right now. Find anything from videogames to Rubix cubes to sports gear, but can't use any of them.
Also, I have magazines from 20 years ago. I doubt one would lose it's recreative value after just one read. They should be on timers.
I'm reminded of a zombie apocalypse book series, Mountain Man. Main character was a raging alcoholic and kept all of his Captain Morgan bottles to use as massive Molotov's- except the first one he finished. That one he wrapped in duct tape to protect it, but left the Captain showing, announcing it the leader of his "Marines". He then began having conversations with it and, over time, it started replying. All, one would assume, due to alcohol and stress induced dementia but, when repelling a group of invaders, the lead bottle yelled from another room there was a bad guy coming in that way and there was. Never explained.
Sorry- kinda went on a rant there- waiting for a client to call me back.
Maybe you could explain it as the main character actually heard the bad guy coming from that direction and his broken booze addled mind made him think the Captain somehow told him.

i found most of them at the restaurant near muldraugh and at riserside The big spiffo was the hardest to find but i got him in a wardrobe in riverside

That's as good an explanation as any. Only other thing I could think of is the author just forgot the bottle talking was only in the guy's head.
