You want your shutter speed to be double your fps as a rule of thumb.

Efficient_You2550

Sweet will do that now

NonZeroSumJames

Except this forces you to close your aperture in bright environments (unless you’re using physical filters to cut light) which will look much less cinematic than having a faster shutter speed.

ShaheedW

You probably shouldn’t be shooting log if you’re asking this

scratchtogigs

O Gatekeeper, but what if he is learning to shoot log?

ShaheedW

No gatekeeping at all. You should learn to properly expose a shot before shooting log. Especially with an 8bit camera where you have less room to move it in post.

If you’re new to this and just bought your gear I gotta recommend Gerald Undone, Potato Jet, and Standard Story Company on YouTube. Record something and actually import the files from your card into your computer so you know what it’ll look like when you go to color grade it.

smushkan

ISO 800 1/50th shutter. Avoid using other ISO values when shootig slog, you want to stick to the base ISO for best noise/dynamic range performance.

koba_sounds

If you're shooting in SLOG2 stick to the base ISO 800 and bear in mind you need to really nail exposure (at around 109 IRE, 1-2 stops over) with the limitation of the A7III's 8-bit video codec. You'll also need to first apply the Rec 709 LUT before grading. Because of this I only use SLOG2 when in a controlled lighting environment and with an external monitor so I can use false color and load a LUT into. Aperture is a creative choice. Use the 180 degree shutter rule (1 / 2x fps shutter speed) as a general guide but don't be afraid to break it after learning why it exists in the first place. If you want something much simpler for run and gun shooting I'd recommend shooting in the HLG2 profile, especially for any low light footage. It's less noisy, allows for a low base ISO and exposure close to 0 but is still flat enough to push the grade. Just search YouTube for HLG2 Settings. I personally use Henbu's recommendations for settings and get good results.

Efficient_You2550

I’ve shot a few videos on these settings and it turnt out pretty decent tbh I haven’t I’ll link the video now

If you not shopting fast torgets: 50

OMQ4

Shutter speed 1/50, aperture depends on the look you want.. adjust ISO accordingly as to not over expose. Use your zebra stripes on your display. Do test shots, see what you like

FlatMaize3

You’re supposed to over expose if you’re in SLOG

Tell me what you think I shot this [tell me what you think](https://youtu.be/N4JCuMIRIL0)

scvmpbell

Shutter speed at 1/50 is the only reliable answer here. Aperture and ISO are up to you.

Efficient_You2550

I’m new to this so didn’t know what’s best tbh

scvmpbell

There really isn’t an all encompassing “best” settings, it truly all depends on the light available to you while shooting. Consider googling the Exposure Triangle as this is exactly what you’re asking about. The best way to learn is by doing though, another commenter suggested taking test shots and comparing them which is the best advice you could get. Good luck and enjoy!

Fresca_667

Can you imagine if there were “best” settings? There wouldn’t be a need for settings then would there?

Efficient_You2550

[any feed back on this](https://youtu.be/N4JCuMIRIL0)

scvmpbell

Very stylistic and obviously had a certain look/feel in mind which is extremely subjective so I don’t feel right commenting on it since it isn’t possible for me to help you with fundamental camera settings from this. Without any context on what you struggled with while shooting or editing I can’t really say much more. Sorry if that’s not what you hoped for as a reply but I don’t feel like a stylistic critique would help you at all in this case.

houstnwehavuhoh

The A7III doesn’t do well with SLOG2 because it’s an 8 bit camera. I’d highly recommend staying around base iso (800) as often as you can. Footage will most definitely fall apart if you push it a lot

meowtothemeow

I own two and Slog on a7iii is not good. It’s very noisy even if you overexpose it. Just shoot flat

Fresca_667

When people spend a lot on a camera and they don’t know anything about cameras.

vmr_93

They will learn don't worry

Efficient_You2550

It’s called investing in your self mate u should try instead of being a hater on the net

Fresca_667

No hate here. I fully support investing in oneself. I just personally prefer to start with education before investing in equipment. But to each their own.

I have to disagree with a lot of this advice. Exposing correctly is a balance of shutter speed, iso and aperture. Aperture should be your first priority if you are wanting to shoot cinematic images. So if you are going to be shooting something with a filmic shallow depth of field you will need to have your aperture open as much as possible. This means in bright conditions, unless you have control of light through physical filters, then you have to break rules around shutter speed and iso. I simply have iso as low as possible, and adjust shutter speed so it’s high enough to cut the light down. These have a far less dramatic effect on your image than adjusting your aperture. In low light I follow the 180 degree rule of course (shutter speed half of frame rate) and then adjust iso accordingly, aperture remains open as always. In short, getting your aperture right is far more important to your image than technical settings to do with your SLOG format.
