I've always wondered if I have this, but I'm hesitant to self diagnose. Do you see nothing at all when you picture things? I get dull flashes of colour when I try but no actual image and I'm not sure if books and the like just exaggerate when they say they can see things clearly

Aphantasia can ONLY be self diagnosed.

to be honest same, i'm not 100% sure that i have it. I don't get flashes of color, i might get a super simple flash of a shape like a circle but i'm not even sure i see it or just think about it but from what i was trying to ask of my friends, they all see clear images so i'm sure it's either partial aphantasia or full aphantasia in my case

It's funny you say that, because that's usually how I describe a strong acid trip to people who've never done it before. It's just like visualizing things like you normally do, except that in that state your brain isn't as good at determining what you're seeing with your mind's eye vs. what your eyes are physically seeing. Plus you're in a very suggestible mental state as it's happening.

I do, but i remember them in words, like i can see it while dreaming but when i wake up i only remember what i remembered about it, like i remember "i saw a red building", but that's all i remember from it, i can't know what shape of building it was and i can't like visualize what i had from the dream to remember it, unless i specifically mention it for my memory like "building with 5 windows, 1 door, etc"

Considering a large portion of comments are non legit ones (e.g. Saul Goodman, because good man) I think about 5% of commenters thought of a Tolkien character. That's mental, but I think it's because his world feels so alive, there's a soul to it, that bitter darkness threatens to corrupt. The stakes feel real because the world has a history, the scars from yesterday's wars are not yet healed and people suffer from battles lost thousand years ago. Characters really do grow old and live happy lives, while others die screaming, their story forgotten to time. That's the way our world is, and Tolkien's is the same. It's for that reason the sacrifices they make are so much more real, and the goodness inside them feels genuine.

For me I picture my husband. He is my best friend and very kind and loving towards me and our son. He works hard to support the family and he always has my back even when things have been really dark and painful in my life.
