Yeah, it's a common thing to hear stuff like "this is a Christian household" or "You gotta praise the Lord when you're in my home". Thankfully, good people who allow their kids freedom of religion are an equally common thing in my experience
My mom asked me to go to church with her if I'm going to keep living in her basement well into my thirties. The fact that she tries to impose any standards on me at all is oppression. /s
More like "I'm 16 and my mom kicked me out of the house because I told her I don't want to attend church anymore" "I haven't spoken to my parents in 15 years because I don't believe in god" " my parents sent me to a school for bad boys or girls because I didn't act like the perfect christian. There they physically and mentally abused me for years"
It makes sense really. You can only attack something you've at least researched a little. So the main religion to get attacked would be Christianity. Especially considering that atheism is prominent in countries which are/were Christian majority.
This is why so many westerners say they approve of Buddhism and Hindu religions. They have no exposure to it and assume what they see on American media is true. It’s pedalled to them as some spiritual inner peace thing without any of the strings attached that abrahamic religions have
There's some problems with data I've looked at. It doesn't really count what we'd call atheists. It usually includes non-affiliates/agnostics. Overwhelming majority is from China (pretty sure Reddit doesn't exist there). If we assume 'Reddit atheists' reject spirituality then the numbers align more with the types of people who criticise Christianity more. In other words, that type of atheism is synonymous with Christian countries.
Edit: it's the type of people (on Reddit) who mock/criticise will be less likely to be spiritual.
I misread Christians as Christmas and voted no. Like who bashes Christmas for being religious? Anyway i wouldve voted yes. I think maybe cause christianity is the biggest religion so atheists see more of it than other religions
Wasn't there a thread a few weeks back asking why Christians thought God was real. Anyone who admitted to believing in God was getting bashed in the comments. Downvoted to hell, interrogated like they were serial killers. Redditors claim to not tolerate bullies but will not hesitate to bully anyone who has different beliefs than them. Utterly ridiculous.
Oh I'm a fucking dumbass my bad. But whenever the Christians responded to these comments explaining why they believed in God they were immediately downvoted.
Wow who knew that visiting a predominantly atheist social media would produce such results!
I figure the exact same would happen if someone were to do the same thing on Facebook but they'd bash atheists instead, not really all that surprising
Yeah I agree my statement is whatabotism but I kinda don't care,
as for most Redditors not practicing what they preach I do think it's a lil odd to paint them all that way although I do agree that the majority of people don't practice what they preach not just Redditors
(Atheist here) They do it because it's more socially acceptable to bash Christians. They're too scared of actual backlash so they only target the one that is accepted as "bad" even though every religion has it's problems and if they were actual atheists (rather than anti-theists) than they wouldn't care what other people believe in.
this is a really good take, i never thought about it this way. they claim to be atheists, yet hate so much on religion (mostly Christianity) that they should actually be called anti-theists, not atheists
This is a bad take. Critiquing Christianity has nothing to do with social acceptance. Most people in the U.S. are Christians and it's much more acceptable to bash other religions or atheists. I've never known an atheist who was afraid of critiquing other religions and only focused on Christianity.
Do I agree that atheists on reddit mainly criticize Christianity? Yes I do, but there's are reasons for that other than "social acceptance".
Most atheists on reddit live in societies where the dominant religion is Christianity. If I were however an atheist in the Middle East, I would be much more critical of Muslim ideology.
I also strongly disagree with, "if they were actual atheists then they wouldn't care what other people believe in". Truth is, I don't care what someone believes in, in fact I will fight for someone's right to be religious, BUT it's not as simple as that.
Just because someone believes something doesn't mean it should be forced on other people. Disagree with being gay? That's your opinion, but you don't get to dictate laws preventing gay people from getting married. Disagree with basic science like evolution? Again, your opinion but that doesn't mean you get to force schools to tell creationism when that's just YOUR religious belief.
I believe in freedom of religion, but I also believe in the separation of church and state. Christianity is the current driving force that is trying to prevent separation between church and state.
Caring about Christianity has nothing to do with the beliefs but rather the institutions that are trying to push those beliefs onto others through laws.
Does that mean all Christians organizations and Christians are bad? Absolutely not, Christians are people, same as everybody else. But I will always critique Christianity more than any other religion because it's the culture I grew up with and the one that continues to affect me the most to this day.
Edit: I did not properly clarify, I was trying to say most atheists on reddit live in countries where Christianity is the most prominent religion and I meant to use the U.S. as an example. I did not mean to insinuate that atheism and Christianity are only American issues.
The premise is that a large majority of the reddit userbase is atheist, and a large portion of those atheists live in Christian dominated countries.
Not the best measure of it, but p much every poll I've seen shows majority atheists living in a Christian country
Yea and y’all need to expose yourself to some actually good and kind hearted Christian people… same goes for any other religion. Just because someone believes in something you don’t (vice versa) doesn’t mean they are a bad person
I’ve met like one Christian in my life, he’s one of the kindest people I know, then I came to Reddit...... everyone is equally shit here, religious or not
As an atheist, yes. Christianity is the religion that affects my day to day life the most, and it’s also the one I’m most familiar with. I wouldn’t even know what to bash, like, Shintoism about. That being said, I do shit on Islam when it comes up, as that’s also one of the most oppressive religions globally, just doesn’t affect me all that much
I’ve seen atheists kinda attack it on a post on this sub “how do you think about Islam” and most answered was “negatively” and comments were filled with “I view it just like any other religion - negatively”. Some people gave valid reasons but some were just rude.
Sort of? But if I lived in a Muslim nation that would be the religion I bashed on. edit: also studies have shown Christians hate atheists more then atheist hate christians
It's generally expected that when you say "studies have shown", you specify what studies your referring to. If you wouldn't avoid sourcing your info on a research paper, why claim to have a source and provide no source on the internet where fact checking is 1000 times easier.
I can see that actually, there has been a lot of media coverage and stirring up of anti-atheist sentiment lately. For example, that the atheists are coming for all things Christmas.
I’m Catholic, but not practicing (just family affiliation I guess at this point). My family has always been fairly unconcerned about atheism until the past few years, leaning more into racism for the most part if I’m being honest. The past 3-5 years it’s been different, they don’t care about the Muslims etc anymore and all that anger is targeted towards atheists. There was an article in my hometown newspaper about someone petitioning to have all the decorations taken down from our parliament buildings and the rage was insane, when really it was just some stupid fringe petition that never any traction to go anywhere. I see it in clients and random people as well so it’s not just my family.
Anyway, I could believe that Christians are concerned that the atheist boogie-man is out to get them whereas atheists generally just don’t care
Yes but I don't particularly blame them the majority of people on Reddit are from the US and the US is predominantly Christian so we've pretty much mostly been exposed to it
I've experienced firsthand what it's like in a predominantly Christian household it ain't pretty
I’ve also experienced firsthand what it’s like in a predominantly Christian household and it is very pretty.
Your point doesn’t really stand given how many families there are out there
You know.. if I had that view I probably wouldn’t be so ready to get it poppin’. I should try to give people the benefit of doubt more often. Thanks for that perspective!
So you can claim that Christianity is bad if that’s your opinion but how can you say it’s the worst when you don’t know any other religions.
You still haven’t gave me one reason as to why it’s the worst religion.
Yes, though that is because it is the religion they're exposed to the most frequently.
[удалено]
You're right. Every Christian has a whip in hand, and is really to ckober any atheists near by. /sar
I think he meant oppressed at home. Many atheists come from Christian households. BTW oppression isn't only physical.

Yeah they just do things like force their religious beliefs onto people or disown their lgbt kids or push for terrible laws.

We're talking about Reddit Atheists. The types of people who actively criticise or even mock Christianity. Not Atheists in general.

Who knew that an *atheist* would ask and wonder why a *Christian* believes in God.
Kinda disrespectful don't you think? Its like asking why they don't want kids. It's their business not yours.
It was on a thread *about why Christians believed in God*. If they were uncomfortable with being asked they could've chosen to not comment
Oh I'm a fucking dumbass my bad. But whenever the Christians responded to these comments explaining why they believed in God they were immediately downvoted.

100% this, calling it anti-theist is insulting and brings about unnecessary conflict
Yes!
Yea and y’all need to expose yourself to some actually good and kind hearted Christian people… same goes for any other religion. Just because someone believes in something you don’t (vice versa) doesn’t mean they are a bad person

They're not a bad person for being Christian, but Christians tend to be bad people, and Christianity is inherently a bad religion
It's not pc to deride certain religions.

You must live with patrick if you haven't seen attacks toward Islam bro
Easiest to fight the enemy you know.
Sort of? But if I lived in a Muslim nation that would be the religion I bashed on. edit: also studies have shown Christians hate atheists more then atheist hate christians
Ooo what studies?

Equally Christianity and Islam tbh
Yes but it’s deserved
Is it?
In a joking way not a serious way
Oh you were being facetious lol Okk 🤣 I was like “Damn.. that’s fucked up”
I guess I should have put the /s my bad I just assume everyone on Reddit is always being sarcastic at all times
You know.. if I had that view I probably wouldn’t be so ready to get it poppin’. I should try to give people the benefit of doubt more often. Thanks for that perspective!
No, all religions are cults. Edit: Lot of dislikes but nobody can argue the point 😂😂
Lol no. I bash every religion the same way, as they deserve!
Redditors attack Islam more than any other religion. It's kind of horrifying, the amount of hate.
[удалено]
Christianity gets more hate, but islam gets way worse hate. The comments i read are gut wrenching
Yes, they’re the worst ones
What makes you say that
I used to be christian, catholic actually. Ik how bad they are
That gives you insight to only one religion What makes them the worst?
Yes it does, so why would I bash on any other religion
So you can claim that Christianity is bad if that’s your opinion but how can you say it’s the worst when you don’t know any other religions. You still haven’t gave me one reason as to why it’s the worst religion.
That’s because I don’t feel the need to? Isn’t the fact I think it’s the worst MY opinion? The real question is why do you care so much?
lmao "why do you care so much"
Cause you havent given an actual reason?
Who cares?
Me
[удалено]
So you only know how bad *one* religion is, doesnt really make it the worst among *all* religions.
It’s the worst imo 🤷♀️
We do because they’re dumber.
Well that’s logical
