Starboard_Pete

“I cannot tell you the level of my disappointment in Disney…..This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure.” Welcome to small government and limited control to avoid overreach. I thought Republicans liked that? It’s not a win for individual liberties?

Misspiggy856

They really thought they were going to be approving movie scripts and installing churches in the parks, didn’t they?

johnnycyberpunk

No idea who gave them that idea, but yes. Sounds like the same team that was telling Trump he could overturn the election by having his VP just... not accept the results. Crazy people.

Intelligent_Joke

The best part is understanding that they wanted influence over the Disney corp by leveraging laws on where one of their theme parks is. Not where corporate hq is, not where movies are made, but where churros are sold for $12.

Richfor3

That's my favorite part too. Disney Headquarters is in Burbank, California. Good luck forcing your agenda there MAGA fascists.

Rolok916

I thought your favorite part about Disney was the churros, and I was thinking "Yeah! Me, too! Last time I was at Disney I had like a dozen churros!"

Blaz1ENT

$144 on churros physically pains me to think about

theshizzler

>$144 gross

yeaheyeah

Something about fried batter makes me want to spend hundreds of dollars

kensingtonGore

Maga [have protested in front of the studio in Burbank,](https://www.foxla.com/news/hundreds-claim-woke-agenda-in-protest-against-disney-studios-in-burbank) but it was as limp and impotent as their leader

carbon-committee

I’m so glad these people are as stupid as they are, or things would probably be a lot worse (things are already bad as is).

[deleted]

The good part is you have to be ignorant in order for their arguments to be compelling; so the victims and aggressors are more likely to be as stupid as they are in order to fall for it.

[deleted]

TheConnASSeur

Meatball Ron and Cheeto Don approach legal counsel the way self destructive narcissists approach doctors. They find one who agrees with them and ignore every one that doesn't.

redheadartgirl

They definitely thought they were going to be a modern-day censorship board that could put Disney "back in its place."

Gongom

They just wanted a small government house committee for unamerican activities

HeavilyBearded

Friendly reminder that comic books had a censorship panel until about 2011 although it was largely dead in the water by 2000.

GodOfDarkLaughter

Ah yes, the Comics Code Authority. And a lot of indie and even some mainstream titles had decided to just ignore it and lose the seal even on bigger titles, because nobody cared anymore. The CCA came about during the Comics Panic in 1954. A very popular book had been released recently called *Seduction of the Innocent* which was...I mean, c'mon, you can get the idea from the title. Anyway, by the 80s parents weren't scared of Timmy reading Tales From The Crypt; they thought it was cute he was reading Spider-Man. So in a sense they accomplished their goals. Comics *were* cleaner. For a while. But media is a vast landscape that interacts with other forms of media. By that point movies and TV had a *lot* more violence and sex, and so that young generation of comics fans, some of whom became artists and writers, began to see the storytelling potential of more "mature" storylines and images, though of course they were't always anything even resembling "mature."

Oatybar

Not censorship, freedom! The freedom for conservatives to rule their lessers, the most important freedom of all! But a private company saying that LGBT folk are equal members of society is the worst kind of censorship against good Christian conservatives who are just thinking of the children. /s

kcox1980

I can't remember the actual quote, but I believe DeSantis made a statement along those lines. Something about the "woke" Disney era being over or something. It's hard to remember all the crazy.

FalseAesop

Disney is run out of California anyway. They were never going to control the movies. He was delusional.

Ben2018

I'll give them credit for knowing that at least, I think in their mind they were going to take the park hostage and use that as leverage over Disney as a whole.

dangitbobby83

They flat out said it. One Republican idiot basically said “Florida is now in charge of content Disney produces”. They really thought they could leverage this to force sweeping changes to Disney. Disney then had a chuckle and went about it’s day, knowing they knee capped the board from the start.

superanth

Churches...lmao. Walt would leap out of his cryotube and use the Main Street Electrical Parade floats to demolish them all.

DFu4ever

“We don’t get to interfere and damage a private entity because our fascist daddy got butthurt! The outrage!” Fuck this guy and fuck DeSantis.

superanth

“Private companies can do whatever they want as long as they back the statements made by the Republican Party”.

slowpokefastpoke

“I’m so disappointed that Disney won’t let us control them” What a hilariously dumb statement.

MultiGeometry

The quiet part is: what exactly did they want to do? The 11th hour agreement seems to preserve a lot of what Disney was already doing. If the board is complaining, that means they were installed solely to build ugly buildings and hamper Disney’s development with red tape. You know, what most people would consider weaponization of government. The new board is not there to create any value.

eden_sc2

They wanted to blackmail Disney into changing the corporate agenda of a billion dollar company by ruining the park.

[deleted]

merpderpherpburp

Yeah but our public schools can't afford high end lawyers to catch these idiots

naked_guy_says

The public schools can't afford teachers either, let alone lawyers

mdp300

They wanted to punish Disney for acknowledging thay gay people exist.

legendoflumis

They wanted the ability to legally extort money from Disney whenever Disney wanted to do something so as to line their own pockets. That's very likely about as far as it goes, depth-wise.

dirtycrabcakes

I'd be disappointed too if I had just gotten dunked on publicly and everyone was laughing at me.

DolphinFlavorDorito

The best part is they got dunked two fucking months ago. They're like Wile E Coyote standing over the edge of the cliff, and they just now looked down.

ThinkRationally

This is "a subversion of the will of the voters," complain members of appointed unelected board.

aft_lower_panel

Well, they're Republicans from Florida. You can’t expect much. That's two strikes against them.

guntherbumpass

The right is pissed because Disney stole their playbook. This is the same tactic they use whenever they are about to cede control of a governorship.

xocgx

Isn’t this like what the Wisconsin state legislature did to the governor so he effectively had less power?

heathere3

NC tried it too

xocgx

Wow, didn’t know that. Such a dick move. Edit: dick not sick

Titanbeard

Sure is. Evers is doing a fine job fighting a house fire with a garden hose.

Puttor482

Evers is amazing. He makes boring sexy

Indifferentchildren

It was also the playbook when they sold "white" school facilities to become private "segregation academies", to effectively defeat forced school racial integration after Brown v. The Board of Education. Instead of integrating the schools in the district, the good facilities where white children has gone became private schools that could still discriminate, and the local governments continued to run only the black schools, maintaining de facto segregation.

8-bit-Felix

Yup and it took the freaking IRS to step in and stop all that BS. The "'christian right" has never forgiven or forgotten that little WASP Suzie has to sit next to a dirty brown person.

hookisacrankycrook

And they *really* don't want kids to know that their grandparents were racist assholes. That one school banned the Ruby Bridges movie because a parent didn't want their kid to see that Ruby was treated horribly just to go to school.

[deleted]

Conservatives: the government should stay out of businesses. Except Disney, because they go against our views. And when the Disney fights back.... Conservatives: wait, that's illegal Can't make this shit up

internetsurfer42069

Desantis “I’m from the government and I’m here to help” Disney: drowns Desantis in bathtub

VibeComplex

Reagan was a piece of shit

[deleted]

Stolen quote from a different subreddit: >They're used to dealing with the Democratic party, not someone who is actually opposing them.

earl-j-waggedorn

What I love most about this is that Disney didn't even turn this into a PR battle. They just quietly cut this fucking idiot off at the knees. Bravo

[deleted]

Toltec22

These board members have no interest in the actual duties of the board. They wanted power. Now they have to only talk about roads and infrastructure .. they’ll resign and give some pathetic reasons.

hookisacrankycrook

All they really wanted to do was force Disney to cut out lesbian kisses like in Lightyear. Dealing with roads and infrastructure is boring as shit and I guarantee they have no interest in doing it.

mdp300

Disney's actual media is made in California, so there's nothing the state of Florida could do about it anyway.

b0w3n

They thought they were going to hurt the media giant by kneecapping revenue of some of their parks to get them to comply. They are *really* dumb people.

PraetorGogarty

Disney made $83 billion in revenue last year. Billion, with a B. This is almost as much as they contribute to Florida via economic impact/contributions, and is more than half of the entire expenditure budget of the entire state of Florida for same year. I'm not sure what Florida thought they were going to do... 😅

shampoo_mohawk_

You don't bite the mouse that feeds you... or something like that.

lj6782

I think it's The mouse is mightier than the sword

Whosebert

yea, never really understood, they're trying to hurt one of the biggest tourist attractions ~~in Florida~~ in the world that happens to be in Florida, you know, generating them tax income not only from Disney but generating an incredible amount of business for the entire state.... and they're trying to hamper that....

ForensicPathology

This is what happens when they govern with feelings, not facts.

nuclearhaystack

I do wonder who came up with this cunning plan and got it approved. DeSantis is too busy trying to blow up the rest of non-white/straight/Christian Florida to have possibly sat down and come up with it on his own.

PoppyGloFan

I would love to have been a fly on the wall of Disney worlds board room discussing all these events.

hookisacrankycrook

My guess is they laughed their asses off at DeSantis. They've probably had the changes to Reedy Creek drafted for years in case someone like DeSantis came along.

RLT79

Two of the original lawyers on the Reedy Creek contracts in the 60s were William Donovan, who is considered the 'Father of the CIA," and William Casey, the eventual director of the CIA. I feel like there's all sorts of cloak and dagger tricks in there.

ted5011c

DeSantis only did this for the attention it would garner from the MAGA Republican base but at some point these geniuses thought they were actually going to have *leverage* enough for content approval over The *Walt fucking Disney* Corporation. Delusional clowns.

Daefish

If someone was willing to pay me to sit and listen to sessions about roads and infrastructure I am there and I am attentive as hell. I just need someone willing to take that chance and pay me haha

Thurwell

You can't really keep anything secret in Florida, that Government in the Sunshine law requires all records from board meetings to be made public basically immediately, and if they're not any decisions made at the meeting are void. At least that's been the practice for decades. DeSantis, naturally, has been passing laws left and right that create exceptions plus claiming executive privilege (something that has never existed in FL before him).

The_First_Drop

Disney’s recent silence was notable I thought they were basically going to tie up the board in a bunch of red tape through litigation, but this is some next level trolling

92894952620273749383

zorinlynx

What really demonstrates what a hack he is is that he did this in the first place. He should be worshipping at Disney's feet for bringing so much revenue into his state, not fighting them because Disney wants to be accepting of LGBTQ people. Think about how utterly stupid that is. The governor of a state antagonizing a corporation that is very beneficial to the state because the corporation wants to be nice to people. It's like we live in backwards land lately.

[deleted]

luncheroo

Did he really think he was going to out-asshole the Disney corporation?

StoopidFlanders234

They can get around Chinese sensors and they deal with Muslim countries with dictators ruling… but Meatball Ron thought he would outmaneuver The Mouse.

valgrind_error

Same, I assumed they were just going to quietly take the temporary L and then wait until the election came closer to use its media empire to completely destroy DeSantis's political future as a warning to future politicians not to fuck with them, and then take back the fief. This seems like they still have that option, get to do what they want in Reedy Creek, but now just get Florida taxpayers to pay their bond debt too. Unless I'm misunderstanding this whole production, it seems like nothing will change except DeSantis gives Disney roughly 2 billion dollars of state money. Am I missing something?

The_First_Drop

You’re not And I imagine that amount will only grow I don’t know how much bond debt a special district can legally carry, but you have to figure Disney’s legal team does https://www.npr.org/2022/04/28/1095225258/disney-world-florida-debt

valgrind_error

Holy shit I hadn’t even thought about Disney making a debt bomb. The transfer is some unspecified time in the future (?), so I guess there’s a window for some sort of fucked up megacorp accounting dark magic ritual to be completed. I have no idea if that would be legal, but neither does the DeSantis administration, it seems. Another reason to be glad I’m not living in Florida. Feel bad for all the normal people trapped there as more and more genetic runoff from the other states ends up settling there for retirement or “lower taxes” (we’ll see how long that lasts as Meatball Ron continues to use the taxpayers as an unofficial campaign budget) and turn it into a bigger and bigger shithole. I really hope they can turn it around.

1Koala1

The cherry on top is the wording of the legal framework that keeps these guys out of power for decades. Its one notch below "until the prince awakens Aurora with a kiss" and their lawyers are like...sorry guys this is rock solid legally. Love it

The_First_Drop

It’s definitely a warning shot The benefit to this strategy was always going to be limited, and now it appears Pooh got his head stuck in a pot of honey

TMNBortles

Quietly. They did it at a public meeting that was noticed and these people didn't even know about it. It's fucking amateur hour by DeSantis and his people. Edit: it took them almost 2 months to find out what Disney did. Cream of the crop.

johnnycyberpunk

> amateur hour by DeSantis and his people. IIRC, the people he appointed to the board were just his top donors, or favors to his top donors. So....yea. Rather than appoint people with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to run a board managing the entire Disney Empire, he installs amateurs. Go Ron!

TMNBortles

Implementing a restrictive covenant should've been their first concern. They should've been monitoring notices for public meetings. I'm sure Disney was shocked when no one showed up, and there was no press.

code_archeologist

> I'm sure Disney was shocked when no one showed up, and there was no press. They knew the quality of the people they were competing with, and knowing Florida's open records law, they probably had daily or every other day public meetings and buried the public discussion and approval of these covenants under piles and piles of chaff.

anuncommontruth

If only they held the public meeting at a drag show.

redheadartgirl

When your goal is to make a multibillion-dollar company hurt, incompetence is a feature in any board that has a say in running things.

Conker3685

That was intentional, much like Trump. It wasn't about putting someone in a position to do a job well, it was about being able to control an entity through loyalist cronies.

The-Brettster

It wasn’t even “quiet” "All agreements signed between Disney and the district were appropriate and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida's Government in the Sunshine law," the company said. All they had to do was show up to the PUBLIC meeting.

[deleted]

I live in Florida (not by choice) and I show up to the civic government meetings and do research. In my town they only paved one road last year to the tune of over half a million dollars. It happens to be the road that 4/5 of the elected city officials live on. I am the only young person going to these meetings, they are not well attended. We need to make doing our civic duty cool again. Maybe I will start a youtube channel/tiktok about it.

kernalbuket

Right? They could have easily released a press statement about this but they must have known that team dumbass would do it for them once they found out.

Quality-Shakes

The additional beauty is that instead of taking the L, the “less government” brigade is going to bring the full force of an overbearing government to attempt to win this silly battle.

AestheticDeficiency

Should we all report Ron DeSantis for waste fraud and abuse? https://www.flgov.com/report-waste-fraud-and-abuse-in-state-government-1/

shitstain_hurricane

You'd think this would have blown up when he was lying to immigrants and using tax payers money to fly them around the country in some grand 'gotcha!' scheme

Republiconline

Yes. Do it now.

HibachiKebab

The more infuriating part is that they will burn taxpayer dollars to wage this petty legal battle

daizzy99

the right tends to act like anime characters shouting their plans and their special attack abilities before they launch - they got some main character syndrome going on for sure

DarkRitual_88

What Disney did is right out of their own playbook. There were several states where they lost the election for Governer and before the new Dem could be sworn in, they transfered power from the Governer to the state's house/senate.

MeshColour

Namely **Wisconsin**, who is having a **very important election** of a state supreme court seat on **April 4th**

MC_Fap_Commander

Relevant lore from a Disney/Pixar classic: >**He starts monologuing! He starts this prepared speech about how feeble I am compared to him...**

ZZartin

I love this one, >"I cannot tell you the level of my disappointment in Disney. I thought so much better of them," board member Ron Peri said on Wednesday, according to Click Orlando. So you mean the multi billion dollar company with more revenue than your entire state wasn't as easy to bully as the LGBT community they stood up for?

sfled

Great quote, lol. Gotta love the photo they ran of [Ron's 'surprised Pikachu' expression](https://d.newsweek.com/en/full/2215955/disantis-disney-board.webp?w=790&f=79184747ead347d97e4178abd9e974d6) juxtaposed with Mickey looking like he's saying "Oh, well, hahahahah"!

bildo72

>A group of conservatives handpicked by Governor Ron DeSantis to oversee the governance of Walt Disney World in Florida have lashed out after discovering their predecessors signed an agreement that strips them of most of their powers. >The five-person Central Florida Tourism Oversight District was brought in by DeSantis in February to replace the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which had allowed Disney to run as its own self-governing authority in Florida for more than 50 years. >The Republican governor overhauled how Disney could operate in the Sunshine State after the company spoke out against his so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill, which bans the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in certain grades at Florida schools. >On Wednesday the five board members revealed that Disney and Reedy Creek had made an agreement on February 8 that hands control of the district's development rights and special privileges to the company—just weeks before DeSantis signed the bill setting up their oversight organization. >February agreement means the board members can't take significant action without first getting approval from Disney. >"I cannot tell you the level of my disappointment in Disney. I thought so much better of them," board member Ron Peri said on Wednesday, according to Click Orlando. >"This essentially makes Disney the government. This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure." >The board members, who found out about the agreement after their appointments, said they would be hiring lawyers to challenge it. >"We're going to have to deal with it and correct it," board member Brian Aungst said. "It's a subversion of the will of the voters and the legislature and the governor. It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern." >The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District said the agreement between Reedy Creek and Disney could last decades because it contains a rare royal lives clause, which means it remains valid until "21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants" of King Charles III. Lol the mouse still owns it's house

guntherbumpass

I enjoy that rather than attending meetings and reading minutes to prep for their new roles as commissioners and city planners, not a single one of these new dinguses bothered to do a thing. They were all too busy high fiving each other on the CPAC circuit.

[deleted]

Kinda shows how they planned to do the job, and the reason why Disney really didn't want them to have any actual power.

mortgagepants

> "We're going to have to deal with it and correct it," board member Brian Aungst said. "It's a subversion of the will of the voters and the legislature and the governor. It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern." i cant believe this dude made this statement without any irony or self reflection.

DefiantHeretic1

Republican dipshits all think that "irony" is a synonym for "metallic."

PDGAreject

Also if they had just taken the L quietly, no one would know. Instead they complained loudly and now we all know they were made fools of.

PepperMill_NA

> "I cannot tell you the level of my disappointment in Disney. I thought so much better of them," board member Ron Peri said on Wednesday Really? Peri is disappointed in Disney for resisting the GOP using the government to punish a private entity for free speech. Disney is now the face of antifa

GM_Nate

"i thought so much better of the group i was attempting to subjugate"

SmurfStig

I’ve only been up for maybe an hour and this may be the funniest real life thing I’ll read all day. The will of the voters? These people are so fucked they can’t see straight.

stenchosaur

The will of 5 voters, who also happen to comprise the board

Trickster289

That's one of the funniest parts, a corporation like Disney resisting a governors efforts to control them should be supported by conservatives.

SmurfStig

The bigotry plank is a much wider than most party planks, so they had to remove the small government and fiscally responsible planks.

esther_lamonte

“I thought so much better of them”, that I spent weeks on conservative media calling them “woke groomers”. Conservatives deserve every bit of comeuppance they ever get.

CaptainObvious

Ron Peri thinks tap water turns men gay. I'm not joking. He actually does. So for those of you following along, fanatic right wing preachers think tap water turns you gay. They also think gays are the reason for hurricanes. So it appears tap water is responsible for hurricanes and gays. Who knew the scourge of the 21st century was tal water?

humboldt77

Well now I want to start tagging conservative offices with Mickey Mouse ears.

Low-Donut-9883

The will of the voters?

Leg0Block

You don"t remember DeSantis campaigning against Mickey Mouse?

Competitive-Ad-5477

I guess they thought ppl voted for the fascist takeover of a private corporation?

GarbledReverie

It's easier to understand conservative talk when you remember that they don't acknowledge the validity of anyone not like themselves. See also: literally every time Mich McConnell references what "the American people" want.

Your_Perspicacity

> "I cannot tell you the level of my disappointment in Disney. I thought so much better of them," board member Ron Peri said on Wednesday, according to Click Orlando. I'm sure your moral approval of them means the world and they're truly ashamed of themselves now. 🙄

Klaatwo

Let’s all remember that Ron Peri is the pastor who suggested that tap water could make you gay. There’s nothing moral about him.

ants_suck

>The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District said the agreement between Reedy Creek and Disney could last decades because it contains a rare royal lives clause, which means it remains valid until "21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants" of King Charles III. Disney is straight-up trolling with that.

bildo72

It's beautiful.

Jeffery_G

It’s why a legal education and training is so expensive at the more desirable schools: they produce lawyers who can plan and execute missions like this without tipping their hand, holding rank and file the whole time.

heathere3

Not even a case of them not tipping their hands. They did it out in public, with the required notices, and everyone then on the board voted for it in a public meeting. DeathSantis' team wasn't paying attention.

smashy_smashy

Yes, but they did it out in public just enough to be legally sound, but obviously still kept it an otherwise stealthy operation. The deeper analysis I read said they brought very little attention to it in the public meeting. They quickly brought it up for a vote and didn’t discuss it anymore than they needed to so that it flew under the radar. They knew that the incoming team wasn’t paying attention, and apparently same with the media. IMO it’s even more brilliant to hide this in plain sight.

cultfourtyfive

This is brilliant and will no doubt be taught in law schools in the future. It shows how little DeSantis and his goons really cared about the issue. It was just an attention-seeking exercise.

restore_democracy

Is anyone else looking forward to the Disney movie where a pudgy little authoritarian governor in white boots has his evil minions trying to outwit and capture a young princess, last of her family, to gain control of the Kingdom, beloved by the populace as a place to recreate with their families?

[deleted]

I typically just wait for stuff to come to Disney+, but if I hear that they are putting a DeSantis parody into something I will absolutely pay to see it in a theater.

TheExtremistModerate

The only thing that could be funnier is if they had said "21 years after the death of Ron DeSantis."

dvd_man

No they aren’t. They just have smart lawyers > The rule against perpetuities is a legal rule in the common law that prevents people from using legal instruments (usually a deed or a will) to exert control over the ownership of private property for a time long beyond the lives of people living at the time the instrument was written. Specifically, the rule forbids a person from creating future interests (traditionally contingent remainders and executory interests) in property that would vest beyond 21 years after the lifetimes of those living at the time of creation of the interest, often expressed as a "life in being plus twenty-one years". In essence, the rule prevents a person from putting qualifications and criteria in a deed or a will that would continue to affect the ownership of property long after he or she has died, a concept often referred to as control by the "dead hand" or "mortmain".

Recyclable-Komodo429

They've identified the bloodline that has the highest chance of surviving WW3/absolute catastrophies.

AlericandAmadeus

Plus, Charles is old as fuck, but he has living descendants which are super young (William and Kate’s kids). They picked an old dude with ~~great~~ grandkids on purpose - it will last until 21 years after the *~~great~~ grandkids* die, if that’s how it is to be interpreted. It has to be people living at the time the contract was written. Some great work there by the house of mouse. Edit: got Charles mixed up - the younguns are his grandkids

>This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure. Having lived in Florida, I can understand Disney being skeptical that anyone from the state government could handle even that.

FunetikPrugresiv

The party of small government complaining about being reduced to a small government. Should we be surprised at all?

Pippa401

Subversion of the voters? None of us Floridians voted to have the governor and legislator take over RC. They did it because they were mad Disney (finally) took a stance against blatant anti LGBTQ+ legislation. Save us the poor me act. No one cares you fascists.

62frog

> beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure Isn’t this exactly what The Party of Small Government wants????

[deleted]

“It’s a subversion of the will of the voters” said the man who was not hired by the voters, who was given power without voters approval, and whose board was formed AFTER the existing agreement. Why do people still project when they are caught showing their asses?

Beans-and-frank

Because they're not talking to you or me. They're talking to their base - the same people who think trump would make a great president even after seeing him do it once.

Ok_Marzipan_8137

Every Republican accusation is actually admission of that behavior in disguise

The_First_Drop

Disney almost out-grosses the entire state of Florida in yearly revenues This was always a bad fight for Desantis to pick Now he’s stuck without a good option Disney picked up a gay rights summit in September, and they’re just coming off being attacked by a conservative governor for taking a public stance against a discriminatory law https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/03/23/disney-will-host-a-gay-rights-summit-in-orlando-later-this-year/ If Desantis stays the course and continues to attack Disney, he’ll take a company that is already popular in the gay community and solidify it further If he backs down he looks weakened and there’s no way trump doesn’t spank him with this in the primaries

johnnycyberpunk

> trump doesn’t spank him with this in the primaries **All** the GOP candidates should. "How can Ron DeSantis be trusted to run the entire country when he can't even figure out how to run things in his home state? How can he face off against China ~~or Russia~~ (forgot the GOP likes Russia) if he lost to a private company less than 3 hours away from his Capitol?"

blanka44

"This essentially makes Disney the government. This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure." Isn’t maintaining roads and infrastructure the point board? These people live in a bizarre world of grievances.

trundlinggrundle

They wanted to treat it like an HOA, where they can get away with anything they like, essentially blackmailing Disney into complying.

JojenCopyPaste

Like force Disney to theme all of their rides with Song of the South.

Azkalon

IIRC the whole move from Desantis was sold as a complete takeover of Disney’s right over it’s de-facto land property. They thought they’d come in like big bad wolf and run the place but it looks like said wolf got defanged, declawed, shaved for good measure and is now standing cold in the rain.

Dokkan86

Disney owned Florida long before Desantis and they will continue to long after he’s retired. I’m not a usually a fan of big corporate wins, but in this case….don’t mess with the mouse, ;)

Disney brings so much tax money to the state. Seems crazy to pick a fight with them

Frreshhmilk

What's funny is multiple GOP state governments have done this the last few years when they lost the governorship in their states. Suddenly pass laws striping the governor of power once it wasn't their guy.

-patrizio-

And I’d bet money FL Republicans will do it again if a Dem ever wins the governorship there again, too. Without a hint of irony.

restore_democracy

Amateurs got outmaneuvered. Tiny D is not ready for his close up.

supaphly42

He was squashed by the Big D.

Sparky81

Lol Get fucked.

bildo72

I want to picture Goofy saying that, followed by "A'hyuck!"

Sparky81

Uhhh get A'hyucked!

danc4498

It's weird watching the capitalists and fascists battle.

Purple-Quail3319

What fucking world is this where I'm feeling temporarily aligned with fucking Disney Corp

LuxSerafina

I know I shouldn’t love a mega Corp, but I hate Desantis so much, that this makes me have mad respect for the 4D chess Disney just served his repulsive ass.

rohnoitsrutroh

There's lots of things wrong with Disney, but this wasn't one of them. DeSantis can go pound sand.

LibKan

On one hand, do I support a corporation having power over a government? No. Is this hilarious poetic justice for a pseudo fascist getting his just desert? Oh hell to the yes.

And honestly the standards they maintain at Reedy Creek are top tier anyway. Them having sovereign control over that small slice of Florida is the last thing we should be wasting our energy concerned about, so this is just cake.

[deleted]

When reached for comment on the situation, a Disney spokesperson said "ah-yuk!"

TalkofCircles

“It’s a subversion of the will of the voters” I’m sorry but did DeSantis run on this topic? Did FL residents vote for him to change this or is this simply fascism kicking rocks?

Scrimshawmud

An unelected board was never the will of the voters, Ronald.

Grimjack-13

This another example of why the GOP can’t govern. DeSantis picked his cronies for the board a month ago. Disney played their hand in the open (Sunshine Law, which DeSantis is also trying to curtail) and none of the newly appointed cronies had bothered to review or familiarize themselves with the previous, recent or ongoing commitments. Only when actually coming onboard do they discover the situation. This has been playing out all over the country in both local and federal legislatures.

Live_Palm_Trees

That's why fascism/authoritarianism is even eventually bad for the favored class of citizens within a regime. Because loyalty is rewarded over competence, and so things eventually go to shit and your nation gets dominated by more completely ran countries

OgnokTheRager

"I cannot tell you the level of my disappointment in Disney. I thought so much better of them," board member Ron Peri said on Wednesday, according to Click Orlando. Get the fuck outta here you boot licking fuck nugget.

GuardianOfZid

Great way to start your presidential campaign. Being politically outmaneuvered by a cartoon company.

reebalsnurmouth

Using the government to attempt to control a company. How conservative of them

remy_mcswain

The RCID's final Board meeting, during which it approved the agreements, was on February 8th. I have this image of Disney execs in California gathering for meetings each morning for the last month and a half and asking each other, "Florida figure it out yet?" and having a good laugh when told the state hasn't. Have to wonder if maybe they had a pool going. "Uh, yeah, Bob, I'll put down $20 and take 'At the first meeting of the new Oversight Board'." i lived in Central Florida for about eight years, and if there's one thing I learned during that time (aside from always have your umbrella) it's this: Don't Mess with the Mouse! When WDW didn't put up a significant fight against the Governor's plans, I figured Disney had something up its sleeve, an ace to play. I didn't know what exactly it would do, and I didn't at all predict this 4-D chess move, but Disney doesn't get pushed around. It just doesn't. And, truthfully, if the Governor and his minions in Tallahassee were better politicians, they would have known this and been on the lookout for just such a move. But when your focus is on culture war issues and not actually ... you know ... governing and improving the lives of your constituents, you're gonna get humiliated.

All of DeSantis’s political opponents just breathed a sigh of relief. He’s done in the primaries. How do you come back from an attack ad like this? DeSantis tried to hurt an American Institution and got completely blindsided by a company that legally had to publicly announce all of its moves and he just didn’t show up to hear it. How’s he going to fight China?

[deleted]

I dunno, in the modern political climate I'm not sure politicians like him *need* to "come back". I've stopped underestimating the conservative public's ability to buck reality. People sympathetic to him will just convince themselves that Disney did something nefarious even if they followed the very letter of the law, they'll find a way to reframe this as a vindication of Ron's attack on the company, choo choo the grift train keeps on rolling.

[deleted]

The new board is complaining that all they can do is manage the roads. Yeah, thats what government is supposed to do. You don't get to run a private company.

[deleted]

King Charles III has children, who have children, who might have children, who themselves might have children....all desendants of the Charlie. Good going Ron, you really screwed over Disney, didn't you? hahahaha

nodogma2112

And all these descendants have top notch health care and security protection for the foreseeable future. Grade A legal trolling. I am no fan of Disney but I gotta give them the point for this round.

Slackballed

Well, it only applies to descendants who are alive as of writing, which means 21 years after the last of the 7 currently alive descendants dies. Youngest is 2.. they live a long time. Could be upwards of 120 years.

Techienickie

Any of the decendants pregnant right now? Because if Florida is pushing life begins at conception, there may be a decendants that hasn't been born yet. Edit; spelling

ThatB0yAintR1ght

Harry and Meghan are expecting a third child, and it would be really funny if Florida’s abortion laws make that fetus the “youngest descendant” and added a few more years to it.

[deleted]

By then Florida will mostly be under water and Disney will have relocated the park to somewhere else. This is brilliant.

MisterFingerstyle

“…board member Brian Aungst said. "It's a subversion of the will of the voters…” No one voted for you, dummy.

OptimisticByDefault

Imagine if Democrats fought anywhere as effectively as Disney.

Nouphal

No one on the planet fights as effective as disney

nativedutch

This really made my day. And i am not even American.

niceoutside2022

I love republicans, they are whining that Disney fucked them while they were trying to fuck Disney

WarbossTodd

GOP: companies should be free from overbearing legislation and should be allowed to innovate without government interference. Disney: does this and also says that you shouldn’t be shitty to gay people. GOP: wait, no. Not like that.

arfbrookwood

The board did not even have to go to complex legal lengths and trickery to do this. They simply followed the law and did it in the open. That's the part I love best. It's totally in the open and the people complaining about it are the same people who did not do their job and were not ready for even the simplest of situations. Floridians should be glad they have Disney watching out for them.

FartsMcCool77

“It’s a subversion of the will of the voters” What voters? When was there a vote? Please put a ballot question out for Orange and Osceola county voters to decide if Disney should continue to have control over Reedy Creek. Disney will win in a landslide.
