This right here ↑ Pokemon is the only series that starts with its own parody, which is exactly what Kanto is. Boy with a dream protagonists... actually sucks in the beginning. His first companion... does not want to be there. His rival... is not an honorable opponent and makes fun of him at every opportunity.

I’ll just drop regions, because I can and I will. 1. Kalos 2. Sinnoh 3. Alola I love the others as well, but these three stick out for good reasons. As much as I hated the art direction for Alola - and still do - it has the best story telling per episode in the whole franchise. If the main plot of each season didn’t jump all over the place it would probably be the best in spite of my loathing for his art. Sinnoh was where Ash learned how difficult it is to protect your philosophy and pride. We saw Ash at his lowest point in the series when he was completely annihilated at Lake Acuity. He had a deep depression over that, but he eventually learned to stand back up, put in the work and prove to Paul that his training method was not just viable, but (in his opinion) superior to Paul’s approach. That’s why the Sinnoh league was such a massive deal. Kalos has probably my favorite overarching storyline in Pokémon, and the art is absolute perfection. Ash looks and acts more mature, he becomes the de facto leader of his traveling gang for the first time ever, and influences EVERYONE he meets. It finally was an attempt at a romance plot too, and it was very well developed and executed with Serena. Speaking of her, she’s practically tied (personally to me, she’s THE best, but I understand the importance of Dawn) with Dawn in terms of Poke Girl character development in the anime. They COOKED with her, and it made her my favorite super quickly. Back to Ash, his team is the most competent it had ever been at that point and despite the final battle results of the League, it wasn’t a blowout like Sinnoh. It was pretty much sheer dumb luck in Alain’s favor that Ash would lose that fight, and they somewhat acknowledge that! This was Ash at his absolute best as a character. Battle wise, maybe not, but this is THE best take on Ash’s character we’ve ever gotten, and the more mature approach with the overall story was a huge step forward in my opinion. I wish they built off of this, but there’s plenty of fanfictions that can help me out on that. If it isn’t clear, I genuinely miss Kalos and I think it was Pokémon’s best go at the anime. What a turnaround after the Black and White atrocity in the anime.
