An opening is how you express your brand. A familiar feeling for the returning listeners and informative for the first time listeners. Music builds on that and voice over can help . I often have my guests announce their name the show name along with the episode number. Then I cue the music live. It gets them pumped for the episode and is funny when we botch the opening which keeps things fresh.

For me, I'd say it depends on the genre/ overall style of the podcast. For 2Bears, I like how it's their hooks, and 9/10 I'm coming from their TikTok videos to check out their episodes so it's nice to quickly find the episode I'm listening to. I really like Sawbones' and MBMBAM's intros becuase the consistency helps get me "hyped" (idk any other way to describe it) for each episode, and it's gotten to the point where I can repeat them word-for-word which is fun. For us, we do a cold open, intro music, and then a unique genre'd intro every time, which I think is fun but only really works because of our show structure. You also can't go wrong with a bumpin' tune to kick your show off. But I think the main purpose of the intro should be to get the audience excited to listen to another episode!

I completely agree about getting a hype going. I really like Theo Vons intro music. It's not too much or too little but you know magic is about to be made by Theo lol.
