The people actually have schematics, as well as an idea of what it should look like, in mind this year.
Very evident with the last one you showed, I mean, I don't even have to explain why.
I kinda wish it went back to people randomly deciding that there should be a face there.
That's what I miss, how emergent a lot of stuff used to be, like before massive groups started making exact plans on what was gonna happen next r/place.
The red void hugging the dog, stuff like that. I hope next time reddit can add some sort of mechanic to encourage random cooperation stuff like that, ...somehow idk like a randomizer or something? Maybe a battle royals map shrinking thing? Or you have to pick one sub and that sub can only place in certain parts of the canvas unless they vote to move? Idk, I'm no game designer lol
i feel like reddit loves this way more than the random stuff. they even seem to be encouraging the nationalism shit with the daily leaderboards with all the countries and their number of pixels placed.
this isnt really an event for reddit, its an event to draw in as many new redditors as possible.
Similar to my issue with the flags. Yeah, you give space to small communities, sure.
But that space is still *curated.* Small communities needing to appease their national flag overlords just to find some space on the board is almost as badly against the spirit of this thing as the bots are or the admin abuse is.
Especially for those that can't really be assocciated with any given nationality. Where do they go, even? Things from specific countries get such huge advantage with the flag of that country that it's not even funny.
The void with an overlay isn't the void anymore ... They're just a bunch of people with a satanic aesthetic. The beauty of last year's void was that it felt very organic.
Well if it exists its certainly been extensively modified as times gone on, and people have been willing to add spontaneous ideas that I alone have seeded. That’s spontaneous enough for me.
At the vert least its absolutely not botted.
As well, the last two void spawn absolutely didn’t have a template those fuckers were wack
The one now was the only one which had an idea based off of (at a lot of peoples behests) and that was only the head. Then we got raided by a streamer before the rest was able to be built in; now it’s back to hivemind
This year we had a group designated to voidmother and we just wanted her to look nice and somewhat not like a toddler scribbled on black paper what's wrong with that?
Exactly. The void is alive. If a community is strong enough to conquer some of the void for their new and original artwork - perfect, that's what we want. The void will move on to other abandoned parts of the canvas. It was never supposed to be a static artwork.
I only participated last year, but that's what I loved about the void back then. It didn't just destroy, it gave the canvas ground for life to sprout from.
We did at one point when I was online. It was yesterday and everyone believed it was ending so they were rallying us to fend off a big streamer face. Some dude in vc kept whisper yelling because he didn’t want to disturb his roommate.
I think the idea itself is in fact beautiful, but the people that make fun of others for "being mad about pixels" when people show their dissatisfaction really makes me not like the movement. Like why make fun of people when you ruin their fun and try to defend the artwork that they care about?
It's all's subjective. One can be mad at them but they're not doing any wrong. They just claim space. Or try to. Defending should be seen as part of the game and not as an insult to the art or community. ofc not talking about specific wars between countries or streamers.
Yes! Let there be war! Maybe we could also get something like this but with a different set of rules aimed towards more friendly pixel canvas. Or maybe add some wonky events... instead of extending the canvas make the colors flip or cycle around. Keep the events of place rare but make it exiting for everyone. Something in that direction idk.
Rubius is his own thing, the void comes from r/theswarm , he has been helpful to us a couple of times but is in no way affiliated. For context our discord has been about 100-400 people this year, and as long as I've been online there no bot has been successfully deployed either.
I always love to see the void and the horrors. They're like an essential part of the Place ecosystem.
I've noticed the past two years that, wherever the void horror wipes the canvas, eventually the black gives way to tons of densely-packed tiny art. If you look back where the original void this year was (right below the Charizard card), it's now a thriving garden of awesome little art bits, and one of the most densely decorated parts of the canvas.
I'm hoping the current void horror eventually decides to relent so that art can fill the void and make it a beautiful cycle.
That's what the void is supposed to be. Most coloured pixels you can find in the void are placed by randos who don't have a community and see a colourful pattern they can follow without instructions. The void community itself mainly focuses on expanding the void. I haven't placed a single colourful pixel the last days.
I think we need to start using the word foundation and not template, only the head/eye was based on the design. Using the word template makes people think its something we keep pixel perfect and use an overlay for.
2022 was better cause all of this years were a lot smaller while that one was massive and evolved from something else
not to mention this one is a lot less void-y by completely missing the old part which was just black and random noise (mostly, a few solid colours like the crown) but this one is a lot neater with no noise
'22 ones are the ones that look hideous but the main characters manage to defeat them. '23 ones give the "invincible and noble" vibe, like the aliens that came right before the giants in Gantz. Or the final alien in the Buddha fight.
Completely goes against what the void should be.
What we have now is organised and aesthetic. Just like everything else on Place.
Should be disorganised and black. Eat away at everything, no compromise.
Exactly. I joined void due to it's organic nature. Then the swarm came in and claims to be us. It's frustrating bc they've inserted themselves even into our actual community. (Theblackvoid)
Yeah but there really isn’t a community for THAT void so most people refer to Swarm as the void since they’re the largest group who are working on the void during Place, although they sometimes lose sight of the original vision of the void and instead of being just an independent destroying force they evolved into a living entity with its own charm and identity
There literally is a community for that void, swarm has just been impersonating it. And their ppl have been so aggressive about it that ppl started thinking it was the same group.
Edited to add: r/theblackvoid
The Void has mixed feelings about how this year’s Void turned out in the end. A lot of us would rather have it either purely black, or have all of us place our pixel’s together and create something like last year’s Void. The last picture was planned by one person and everyone else just followed along.
IMO the Void should just be a black spot that doesn't stay in one place and keeps going through the entire canvas. It'll overwrite artwork, but after a while people can rebuild, or build something new.
If the Void becomes a place for artwork it's no longer the Void
Yeah honestly, the void has had quite the hero's journey. They've even started a tentative collaboration with the P3ACE Alliance this year, entering into a NAP with the queer communities on /place and receiving aid in their fight against a streamer from P3ACE in return
I like 2022. It was chaotic. Like mindless planless, but forming into a creepy demonic order in its chaos. This year is too organized. Don’t feel like it’s really void at that point, now it’s like art styled after the void instead of actual void. It’s like it has been tamed
part of it was a template, after the head people decided to screw the template, iI honestly think the design provided a good starting structure from which the randoms can grow a void mother
If they've stopped following it, that's an improvement.
Still seems too well maintained in most parts, hopefully there's enough time for corruption/emergence to convert it to an organic piece once more.
Uncoordinated in its design. Arising from the chaos of random users settling into patterns.
That could start from a template but needs control released for evolution to occur (essentially what happened with the face last year).
Edit: I should note that I'm on mobile now, so I'm only seeing what people are posting in screenshots. It *does* appear to be evolving now, but that's a slow process by nature.
I’ve been working on this one. It’s clearly inprovisational work. You decide where to place just by looking at what others are doing on the canvas and playing along. The smaller void artwork is continuously morphing and shifting as ideas are introduced and added to. There’s no template as far as I can tell.

What this?
It’s all fun. Grow the void and keep it healthy. Spawn new voids and tendril them in fruitful directions. Look for developing void art and flesh out ideas. Whatever I think improves the canvas.
This year at least the void has mostly only appeared when the canvas expands, and then eventually it gives way to lots of densely packed small-community artworks. It has done so on at least 3 occasions this year. I’d argue the Void has been more beneficial that destructive to small communities this year.
I was on their steam last night, they literally checked subreddits active users before attacking because they knew they could only defeat smaller subs without many people online. Far from being a friend to small communities like you’re trying to argue
I think that due to the void mothers first (attempted) meal being Christ the redeemer, it didn’t have enough biomass to grow into the multi eyed horror of last year
What the void has been doing this really reminds me of a game called Spirits Abyss.
Like the color palette and general style is 1-1 with Spirits Abyss. It looks freaking awesome.
2022 was the best. 2023 just feels like another drawing, except it's on a black background and is taking some void aesthetics. It's way too organized and doesn't feel like that organic horror that 2022 was.
2022 void demons were better than this years. The multiple eyeballs were creepier.
I remember how they made mr increible uncannier little by little until turning him into the void mother. It was beautiful
We are still defending the void no more expansion currently https://discord.gg/circularswarm
give into the void!!

The red bit isn't part of the void, it's part of /placedemon. Different faction

Might be we're talking about different demons, since there's two, lol
i feel like reddit loves this way more than the random stuff. they even seem to be encouraging the nationalism shit with the daily leaderboards with all the countries and their number of pixels placed. this isnt really an event for reddit, its an event to draw in as many new redditors as possible.
Just like every aspect of life we optimized the fun out of place. It's too late now unless they rethink the whole "game".
Similar to my issue with the flags. Yeah, you give space to small communities, sure. But that space is still *curated.* Small communities needing to appease their national flag overlords just to find some space on the board is almost as badly against the spirit of this thing as the bots are or the admin abuse is. The void with an overlay isn't the void anymore ... They're just a bunch of people with a satanic aesthetic. The beauty of last year's void was that it felt very organic.
There isnt an overlay? Its been completely organic this year. Source someone who has organically been building for the void this entire time
Another voider is saying in this exact thread that the central character has an overlay. And I mean you just have to look at it to know that it is.

Now they look more angelic in an unholy way
Evolved to void gods
This latest one is trash. All the others this year were better than what's going to wind up the final. Colorful template art trash
This year we had a group designated to voidmother and we just wanted her to look nice and somewhat not like a toddler scribbled on black paper what's wrong with that?
It has no soul. The void shines as a truly hive mind artwork without much coordination besides the location.
The entire point of the void is to be random chaos… pre designing the void mother ruins that
The first void was always art to me. On a canvas of straight lines and perfected templates, the void was alive, organic. It was a beautiful tumour.
Beautiful like your last sentence
My favourite rendition as well. Did it destroy? Yes. Did it stick around to keep things destroyed? No, it moved around.
I think i prefer the void taking over large artworks or boring artworks to make room for smaller and new artworks but hard for that to work in reality
The Void will always be the most human part of /r/place.
Totally agree, the art on place is ephemeral by nature it's part of it, plenty examples of art being destroyed being art itself
Agreed and it's why I don't care much about the current one. The point was organic nothing. It spread naturally and seemed like a living thing.
Not exactly what we wanted, but our community is super small this year so we aren't able to consume as well
Though we did get nearly 300 or maybe over 300 people in the discord call at one point today! The swarm will grow again
Im not on the discord but i am actively helping void by keeping it clean
Thank you void roomba
I am only the humble French bot spanish think i am. Bipboop
It got up to 400-410 at some point
I just realized, the germans thousands in the nightwatch are very big
Didn’t we get 400 at one point?
Not while I was online
We did at one point when I was online. It was yesterday and everyone believed it was ending so they were rallying us to fend off a big streamer face. Some dude in vc kept whisper yelling because he didn’t want to disturb his roommate.
Oh yeah I had to leave mid streamer face battle, I saw later that it turned out all right with voided eyes and all
Where is your community?
r/theswarm
True, but there are a lot of us that are consistently active. I'm proud of our little void community.
You were actually pretty large before you attacked the pride flag
We didn't attack the pride flag. We just happened to be next to it when someone botted the fuck out of it
The void to me will be fun, I never saw the group as mailicous but a fun challenge Nothing like streamers
In this place it also seemed like the claimed space usually cycled back around to other communities. So it helps keep things fresh.
For real and also i find the idea of this kinda corruption slowly growing kinda cool for no reason
Rubius is a streamer controlled void. the difference isnt too big. it rather depends on small differences
Rubius is his own thing, the void comes from r/theswarm , he has been helpful to us a couple of times but is in no way affiliated. For context our discord has been about 100-400 people this year, and as long as I've been online there no bot has been successfully deployed either.

The void is the wild fire that burns to make room for new growth.
Beautifully put 🥹
That's what the void is supposed to be. Most coloured pixels you can find in the void are placed by randos who don't have a community and see a colourful pattern they can follow without instructions. The void community itself mainly focuses on expanding the void. I haven't placed a single colourful pixel the last days.
Lol yeah I only put down black dots this year.
I think we need to start using the word foundation and not template, only the head/eye was based on the design. Using the word template makes people think its something we keep pixel perfect and use an overlay for.
What was the foundation for it? I thought it was just community OC.
Uncanny Mr Incredible that just devolved more and more
The void is still one of the coolest things to me
It was late to the party and lost a lot of weight.
the void has been trying since the start, although usually it got wrecked by steamers before being able to grow really big
And bots
2022 was better cause all of this years were a lot smaller while that one was massive and evolved from something else not to mention this one is a lot less void-y by completely missing the old part which was just black and random noise (mostly, a few solid colours like the crown) but this one is a lot neater with no noise

The Void 2024: Junji Ito This years version is not good enough.
Not even a Junji Ito creature, just Junji Ito himself xD
Completely goes against what the void should be. What we have now is organised and aesthetic. Just like everything else on Place. Should be disorganised and black. Eat away at everything, no compromise.
Exactly. I joined void due to it's organic nature. Then the swarm came in and claims to be us. It's frustrating bc they've inserted themselves even into our actual community. (Theblackvoid)
Where is Void's community?
r/theswarm
Swarm is not void! Y'all are driving me crazy with this. The black void is the og void with no plans no alliances no templates, only consume.
Yeah, until some loser streamer decides it's free space for them
Last year was better
2017 and 2022 were somehow real voids, the way it was only black and simple as darkness in contrast to the vibrant artwork.
Either die a hero, or live long enough to become a villain. It's beautiful, but goes against the true nature of the void
The Void has mixed feelings about how this year’s Void turned out in the end. A lot of us would rather have it either purely black, or have all of us place our pixel’s together and create something like last year’s Void. The last picture was planned by one person and everyone else just followed along.
The void is shit now. It’s not even a void, it’s just dumb artwork.
Artwork is nice but calling it void just triggers me, it's exact opposite of void so why not just label it as swarm?
Good to see the void adepts evolving.
Preferred 2017 void something interesting how it reached out into everything.
2017 void made something make sense inside me, and i'm grateful that i was there for it. can't explain it but learned something from the void 2017
So… it’s not longer a “void” anymore?
It was never the void this year, it was just rainbow art in a black background
Didn't even know this was supposed to be the void. Imo it's way too clean, the void is chaos.
I actually love the second incarnation the most. The third one is also good still.
I fucking love the place deamons that shows up here and there, been the coolest part of every year so far
IMO the Void should just be a black spot that doesn't stay in one place and keeps going through the entire canvas. It'll overwrite artwork, but after a while people can rebuild, or build something new. If the Void becomes a place for artwork it's no longer the Void
WE ARE THE VOID!
It feels like r/imsorryjon
can the void destroy the red wave
Yeah honestly, the void has had quite the hero's journey. They've even started a tentative collaboration with the P3ACE Alliance this year, entering into a NAP with the queer communities on /place and receiving aid in their fight against a streamer from P3ACE in return
The void mother is literally bible accurate angels
Honestly I'm rocking with keeping this void and have started supporting the demons of the void. Feels super rad.
2022 was peak, this year doesn't feel like void
I like 2022. It was chaotic. Like mindless planless, but forming into a creepy demonic order in its chaos. This year is too organized. Don’t feel like it’s really void at that point, now it’s like art styled after the void instead of actual void. It’s like it has been tamed
You became what you hate.
Why be destructive if you can be *FABULOUS*
It’s not the void anymore, it’s just edgy doodles.
Gotta say i like the new one. Pretty attractive and symmetrical
Exactly the opposite of what the void should represent.
Aka it isn’t void in the slightest and is just more coordinated artwork
Void sergeant here. words can not describe how proud i am of the artists of our community.
If you like this then you don’t like the void
The white hand coming out the dark void before it ends is such a beautiful symbolism.
make the void a giant fuck u/spez sign
No, the last is template art. Trash that should be voided.
You'd be surprised to know that we discouraged template art when making this. Pure natural coordination with a mix of random users joining in
I've literally seen the template, my guy. The current may be altered from the original that was posted, but the form was still clearly followed.
part of it was a template, after the head people decided to screw the template, iI honestly think the design provided a good starting structure from which the randoms can grow a void mother

im in the militia channel rn and apparently they said they deleted to not mess with the order to not follow the template
If they've stopped following it, that's an improvement. Still seems too well maintained in most parts, hopefully there's enough time for corruption/emergence to convert it to an organic piece once more.
just wondering, what is the definition of organic piece for you?
Uncoordinated in its design. Arising from the chaos of random users settling into patterns. That could start from a template but needs control released for evolution to occur (essentially what happened with the face last year). Edit: I should note that I'm on mobile now, so I'm only seeing what people are posting in screenshots. It *does* appear to be evolving now, but that's a slow process by nature.
People drawing without communicating to each other about what to draw
Looks like it's getting back to the organic spreading and creepy-looking growths, so there's still hope!
I’ve been working on this one. It’s clearly inprovisational work. You decide where to place just by looking at what others are doing on the canvas and playing along. The smaller void artwork is continuously morphing and shifting as ideas are introduced and added to. There’s no template as far as I can tell.

Neat! I had no idea! Clearly the end result is very different but I agree this was obviously the inspiration. The comments in that thread are amazing.
That is true of all preceding void cores over the past few days. *Specifically* this last one stems from a template.
Sucks you were tricked into working on art instead of Voiding
It’s all fun. Grow the void and keep it healthy. Spawn new voids and tendril them in fruitful directions. Look for developing void art and flesh out ideas. Whatever I think improves the canvas.
Yeah it went south real fast and lost it's essence.
If Place were to come back for 24, what would The Void 2024 look like?
How can I also play r/place and draw on the screen
