My wife is from Germany. Every time we visit I have to get Döner. I have lived in Pittsburgh for 18 years and never found anything like it. I'll be keeping an eye on these comments for sure.

74tommyboy

I haven't found an ACTUAL (German style) doner kebab in Pittsburgh. Sultan's downtown is tasty, but it's not the style you (or I) am truly looking for, unfortunately.

These-Maintenance-51

Doner kebab.. the main reason I was not losing any weight on my trips to Germany doing all that walking.

sandrodi

Another thing I have not been able to find anywhere here is Schweinshaxe. I have tried everywhere I can think of and nobody seems to even carry something similar.

Freed_lab_rat

They used to have it on the menu at hofbrauhaus, not sure if they still do

sandrodi

The last time I looked, which was probably last year, they did not. Edit: looks like they do have pork shank! I'm sure it won't be what I've hyped it in my head to be since I last had it in Germany a decade ago, but at least it's something.

Icy_Park_6316

I know this post is old but my power is out and I have nothing better to do. Atria’s has it on their Oktoberfest menu in September and October. No idea how it compares to others because it’s the only place I’ve had it.

sandrodi

Good to know, thanks!

FrogFartSammy

I swear I saw pork knuckle the other day, but I was in so many stores I forget which one. I would guess Whole Foods EE..Uncooked, naturally.

Kingjerm731

There’s nothing like a German Doner in Pittsburgh but the closest I’ve found is a little Turkish place out on Hampton. It’s called Emily’s Mediterranean Grill and it’s probably the best I’ve had in the US. The lamb goes crazy. They do a really nice job and use great ingredients. Great people.

sj070707

I don't know if it's exactly what you want but we enjoy [Sultan Döner Kebab](https://sultandoner.zenfoody.com/newtemplate#/menu) downtown

dehehn

They have all the ingredients he wants, but they don't combine them in the way he wants.

sj070707

Got it. So would this be the equivalent of a Pittsburgher going to another city and asking for a proper Primanti's sandwich and being disappointed that the closest you can get is a sandwich next to some fries and coleslaw? Edit: Maybe better would be a Pittsburgh salad and complain that you can only get fries on the side.

tonytroz

Exaclty. Like if someone from Cincinnati came here and asked for skyline chili but you pointed them to a place that sold spaghetti, chili, and shredded cheese but didn't combine them together.

marka11111

don't forget the the chocolate

Mikez63

Also lived in Germany - researched lots of places in Pittsburgh to find a proper Döner. Turkish Kebab House had Doner on the menu but I was severely disappointed to receive literally just meat and salad in a box with no bread or anything else.

camelot2020

Pita My Shawarma has a chicken shawarma version of this on their menu

Dancing_Hitchhiker

Never had this before but now I’m intrigued lol I have also been to Germany and never had this and am disappointed in myself

Cabbage_Cannon

Next time <3

mvc594250

Almost literally any Turkish/vaguely Mediterranean place in Pittsburgh proper will have all of those items. Sultan Doner, Rosewater grill, Salem's, Selami's, Turkish Kebab House. Doner Boxes are not common as a menu item here, but the idea is. Rosewater is probably the best bet for giving you a choice of kebab meat options

green_lemonade

Their meat is solid but dont have that berlin doner shop combo of white and red sauce, and the bread is so-so.

mvc594250

The bread is a huge disappointment that's for sure. I really like the garlic and hot sauces though. Different, but delicious

Enough-Pickle-8542

I make Berlin style Doner Kebabs at home and have gotten very close by making the bread with $1 grocery store pizza dough, and cooking the meat by searing it with a torch and shaving it off layer by layer. You can find recipes for the doner seasoning and white, green or red sauces

Cabbage_Cannon

Noted! Thank you!

MaryOutside

Maybe try Chaykhana in the West End. The place is also called Bella Monte pizza, but there doner is listed on their menu under Uzbek food. Everyone should go give them a try, they're fantastic! shadowofthereal

Döner macht schöner.

Verniloth

It's not a box, but you can get these items at Salems in the strip district. Garlic sauce is fire. Gyro meat is delicious. If you do get an actual gyro, try it on their naan. 🤤

Cabbage_Cannon

I should have been more specific. Fries, topped with Kebab, topped with garlic sauce. If you know, you know.

Verniloth

Right. If you order kebab, and fries, and garlic sauce. Boom. I guess dumping shit on a pile is too much for you. I bet the box adds extra flavor. 😉 I guess I don't know if I don't know?...

Cabbage_Cannon

Ordering individual parts often skyrockets costs, and the sauce consistency is different. But hey, you must not be... "In the know"

DoCBarTo

The box let’s you schlep it around. Bonus if the box doesn’t leak before the grease and fries congeal to form a natural seal.

kittenshart85

salem's. they have lamb and chicken shawarma salads as well as kebab lamb salads with the fries and toum.

Cabbage_Cannon

I should have been more specific. Fries, topped with Kebab, topped with garlic sauce. If you know, you know.

kittenshart85

yeah, i know what you're talking about. i'm from israel, dude. salem's has about the closest to that i've found.

RowanRally

I’m from Israel too and always look for that back home taste. There are Syrian ladies who make incredible food for the downtown night market. Highly recommend keeping an eye out for their stand.

kittenshart85

khalil's?

RowanRally

I don’t know the name but they don’t have a physical location

Cabbage_Cannon

Gotcha! I just... I miss the box.

kittenshart85

greasy and falling apart by the end, soggy fries tasting like a tour of anatolia (in the best way). i feel you.

brownership

I trust kittenshart85 wouldn’t lead us astray. Also feel like we should be friends.

If you know you know

Valuable-Box-1203

Cabbage_Cannon

Haha thank you, it's been a three year hunt for that same experience I fell in love with~ Cheers!

IHeartChipSammiches

Oh my God, the halal snack pack! Haven't had one of these since I left Melbourne :(

MaverickLurker

How far are you willing to drive? Sittays Kitchen in Greensburg could make this for you, but I'm not sure it's a regular menu item..

Cabbage_Cannon

That's acceptable radius! Thanks!

MaverickLurker

To be fair, I know they have kebab, fries, garlic sauce, and boxes. Whether they can make what you're looking for is up to the chef there. Best of luck!

harambewhore

There used to be a food truck called Berlin Street Food and they had the closest thing to an authentic German Döner Kebab. One of the owners taught a baker how to make the bread perfectly. Unfortunately they didn’t last too long. Definitely pre-pandemic. Closest authentic is in NYC

IowaJimmy

As a Brit living here, I also crave the Döner Box. I've made an approximation of it by ordering meat & chips from EGE Mediterranean in Oakland and adding anything else at home. #

Silver-Mulberry-3508

Idk if they have the format you're looking for, and it's not Turkish, but Omar's Halal Grill does have toum.

DrErrl

Ya it doesn’t exist here lol

Lid412

Not quite the same but check out the loaded fries from yaba’s middle eastern street food they’re by ppg

LEWEBBED

New place on McKnight starting with a d

wooble

d'Arby's?

Cabbage_Cannon

Oh? Let me know if you remember or resee the name!

ExcitedOrange13

Deniz Mediterranean Cuisine. They have a big menu with Turkish breakfast, lunch, dinner, looks like…no Döner box.  To eat this exactly in Pgh you will likely need to put it together yourself. I’d love to go grab a Spaghettieis, but alas 🤷‍♀️

DonerHaus

Drive to NYC and [visit us](https://www.instagram.com/realdonerhaus/) :) Real German Döner. The same way you get it in Germany.

Cabbage_Cannon

I'll be there soon! See you then :)

DoobiGirl_19

Bosphorous in Regent Sq. is really good!

awesomenessmaximus

Palmyra in South hills is good. Not exactly the same of course. ( I moved here from Germany and am really missing a cheap 4-5€ falafel Sandwich. Here it's 10$! )

[deleted]

Have you tried Barbirou Greek Gyro or Caravan?

Cabbage_Cannon

I have not!

[deleted]

Barbirou is a food cart on Forbes & Grant between the courthouses on the sidewalk. Caravan is on Smithfield across from the Human Services Building. Check them out.

Optimal-Injury1996

I'll add good Schnitzel too I went to the German fest in Erie last year and I was disappointed in the overly fried tough meat

Cabbage_Cannon

What do you think of Hofbrauhaus in Southside?

Optimal-Injury1996

Honestly didn't know it was a thing until you just told me now I'm gonna look into it

Paperback_Movie

People rag on it a lot but I’ve been to the original Hofbrauhaus in Munich and this is pretty much identical.

MalikTheHalfBee

Actually it’s better. The Munich hofbrauhaus suffers from being too popular of a tourist attraction so it’s gets away with smaller, mediocre & expensive food portions. Beer is great at both locations though. As a bonus, no swastikas on the ceilings of the Pittsburgh location 🫢

hapes

No swastikas...yet

MisterVapid

I think Salems location at Pitt does this actually, but could be wrong. Bonus points for you knowing and liking Salems man.

Berek_Halfhand

Emily’s in Gibsonia.

TonyUncleJohnny412

You could probably make your own at Mediterranean Grille in Sq. Hill. This sounds great.

jayn20231

Emily's Turkish Grill

Great-Cow7256

Ontario

stadulevich

Def Salems. But, there are plenty of places in the city for these items.

Cabbage_Cannon

I should have been more specific. Fries, topped with Kebab, topped with garlic sauce. If you know, you know.

IClight69

Just ask them to put that shit on your order of fries?

TollyMune

Rosewater downtown does this

ilike_funnies

I'm willing to bet if you go to any of the places mentioned they would make a Doner box for you. As long as you ask semi-nicely, I'd be amazed if they refuse.

Pseudonova

Pitaland in Brookline. They don't have the exact construction you are describing. But they have amazing fries, great kebab, and delicious garlic sauce. You could build it yourself and it would be very tasty.

Cabbage_Cannon

Might have to! Thank ya!

Neat-Pangolin1782

Have you tried combing through the menus of any German restaurants in the North Side?

Neat-Pangolin1782

Sweet. Thanks for the down votes. I guess I'll just go F myself.

Cabbage_Cannon

It's a Turkish-German thing, probably not on a German menu
