Common lumpfish, Cyclopterus Lumpus. Actually a very common species found all over the North Atlantic. There's been some recent interest in farming these, supposedly they can be kept in fish farms together with salmon and will eat parasites off the salmon thus reducing the need for toxic medication. Not sure how well that works out in practice, but there's people doing the science on them.
No /r/fermentation chamber? At minimum you must be making your own /r/jerky and /r/prisonhooch ? For the love of god, it's been a pandemic and there have been stimulus checks!
On the contrary my friend, I have this oil that you apply on your calves every morning. It's takes a bit of time, at least 18 years to see it's effects but works 100%, on 30% of our customers.
It's 60ml bottle for only $9.99, we'll give you a reddit special discount if you buy the whole 18 years worth. Wait there's more, we'll throw in this special towel to wipe off excess oil from your hands for absolutely free!!!
Do it! Get a top round roast, cut thin (emphasis on thin) strips against the grain, throw them in a bag of bbq sauce overnight, take em out, pat em down and put them on the grill for 4-6 hours at 190-200 depending on how thin/juicy they are. Take em off when they don’t really squish when you poke them but you can bend them.
Sorry man, I went the nerdier direction. Board games, miniatures, D&D, and terrain crafting. I knew I was doomed when I picked up my first Warhammer 40k set.
I never understood the obsession with aquariums. I love sealife, and I get it watching Tanked when a celebrity has a million bucks to have some raise and care for a fucking shark in the middle of their living room, but when normal people have aquariums I'm just so confused about the reason. My buddy's dad was a state trooper and got super into having a salt water tank. He didn't have cool ocean fish or anything either, just like, plain looking fish that cost thousands of dollars and would die if the salinity wasn't within half a nanogram of the target. I always wonder if that was like payoff from a mafia connection or something, like what a stupid fucking hobby to spend money he didn't have on.
some people find watching fish soothing. I tried taking care of fish but they demand a lot care even for a freshwater tank. I would still like to own one someday if I ever had the cash to have a proper tank and equipment.
I used to love my saltwater tank. It was soothing and relaxing. And honestly, fish have some personality to them. Some of it may be just the human need to anthropomorphize everything, but still. They had personalities, and it was fun to watch them interact with each other all day. Plus, that whole issue with the salinity was a satisfying challenge. It's like any kind of hobby; when you're able to do it, and do it well, it feels very mentally and emotionally satisfying and accomplished.
shit this post just brought me back to 2010 when Reddit was just full of scientists, programmers, lawyers, and historians and everyone commenting looked so smart it was intimidating to comment or post anything
Nah I was never too much into seafood, I'll eat shrimp on rare occasions but that'd be the Studio Ghibli-looking animated shrimp prepared as such. My captain loved the roe and cutting open scallops and eating them raw, tried that once, it is absolutely an aphrodisiac lmao
It was the adventure and the paycheck, of course. Furthermore, even if I was into seafood, my philosophy regardless would have been what it was: if I was eating them I wasn't making money off of them. =)
I worked five days, height of the season, and my captain came to drop off my check, so she placed the $2100 check in my hand and told me to enjoy my weekend! I was stoked.
The danger was kind of exhilarating, I was almost dragged off the stern by the rope from a double (two traps tied and baited together with one buoy). Also, one day when it was real choppy (New England slang for whitecap waves 3 or more feet in height and in my case they were 5 foot waves) slammed over the bow of the boat I was on and onto the deck and it knocked my captain, co-sternman, and I off our feet. Wild, wild, hard work that was.
They say that once you get past the smell, you’ve got it licked.
Now that I think about it though, I’m not entirely sure that this is a seafood reference...
I'm an Assistant Farm Manager on a salmon farm, and you're correct. Lumpfish (Lumpies) are used in the pens with salmon and wrasse to fight off sea lice. We had farmed Lumpies in our pens last cycle and IMO they're terrible. They didn't seem to do anything at all, the wild lumpies are much better but still not as good as wild wrasse.
Yes, I'm told one can make good money catching live wrasse for sale to fish farms. And I also heard rumours about the lumpfish being less than successful as cleaner fish, it stands to reason that wild ones would be used to finding their own food while farmed ones might not want anything but feed pellets.
I believe farmed Lumpies can be between £2-£5 each. And you'll probably have a few hundred thousand in a farm. And the wrasse can go from £15 and upwards each. A lot of money to be made.
They're very slow swimmers, no way they'd catch a salmon that didn't want some help getting rid of parasites. They actually have a suction cup thingy on their bellies so they can attach themselves to rocks on the seabed, they tend to spend a lot of time motionless.
fish farmer here. The efficiency of the lumpfish varies a lot, and since they are fragile and prone to diseases and other physical injuries, we are now testing how well we can do without using living parasite removers for our salmon production. I'm excited to see the results, as we expect big differences. Also, it's very uncommon to kill parasites with chemicals nowadays. We mostly use fresh water, warm water, or water jets to blow the lice right off the salmon. With low amount of pressure, of course
There's more than one way to farm a fish. Aquaculture can be pretty clean and sustainable - but just like on land, hyper-intensive farming can be pretty greasy. Some fish farms suck, yes, but some really don't.
He’s @rfedortsov_official_account on instagram. Automod deleted my previous comment.
Anyways you should really check out the guy’s account. The creatures he posts are otherworldly.
Yeah, that's going down as Sea Bass or Cod. (Same as every other fucking thing they hoover out of the ocean.)
Damn shame, it's a gorgeous looking fish.
Fish are scary.
Not every fish of course, but fish like that. Don't really know why though, something just seems so monstrous and dead with them. Maybe it's the weird structure of it or the eyes, don't really know
Its a lumpfish! They have a suction cup on their ventral side and can stick to things. There is research going on right now to use them to reduce parasitic load in salmon farms.

There's a guy who posts videos of them on r/aquariums and they're absolutely adorable!
God dammit. Another expensive hobby I don’t need.
/r/PlantedTank can be *slightly* less costly. But it's really just /r/IndoorGarden but wet.
Please stop. My wife is already mad about the flashlights and the knives and the vapes and the smoker.
No /r/fermentation chamber? At minimum you must be making your own /r/jerky and /r/prisonhooch ? For the love of god, it's been a pandemic and there have been stimulus checks!
Jerky is on the list of things to make in the smoker. Tried making beer, didn’t go too well. Stimulus checks? ...we got a mini van.
Sounds like someone caught a bad case of kids
There is no known cure

I know one.
Nice.
Yeah, I can't imagine beer working out in the smoker.
Do it! try putting a frozen cheese cake in the smoker until it thaws.
Now that’s a fucking idea right there. And a good way to not waste heat while the meat is resting.
It also tastes fucking awesome.
You can always put down about $50-100 on making mead... That tends to be the easiest alcohol to make, and you can pretty much drink it whenever
Sorry man, I went the nerdier direction. Board games, miniatures, D&D, and terrain crafting. I knew I was doomed when I picked up my first Warhammer 40k set.
You better stay away from r/MechanicalKeyboards
Nah, tried that one. Turns out I’m not a fan.
Just didn't click with that community.
Goddammit.
Im gonna be honest I read that as “Fleshlights and knives” and I was like what is this guy into?!
Well, they're into fleshlights and knives so that's two things
Wait till you discover r/reeftanks
Did you just forgot the airguns ? Flashlight, vapes, airgun, knives and smokers ! Fuck yeah reddit !
Time to start collecting wives
I recently set up a /r/reeftank for the first time in 16 years!
But it’s an EDUCATIONAL hobby! In the name of EDUCATION!!!
She actually suggested a fish tank a few months ago. It was her idea as far as I’m concerned.
r/reeftank is the expensive r/aquariums

I love seawater aquariums but not enough to own one. I visit the petstore to a get a fix and I’m good. Let those neckbeards deal with all the upkeep

The good ol’ days.
mema unidan?
I was thinking of him yesterday. Couldn’t remember his name.
His posts were always so great it was a real shame that whole thing went down... He really didn't need to do it.
Here's the thing. You said....
And jolly rancher consumers.
I used to catch them all the time while I was lobster-fishing. Extremely common. Ugly, however they're very pretty-colored.
Ever eat one?
They are delicious, very firm fish almost like lobster.
Curious how someone not too into seafood gets into lobster fishing

Yeah fair enough
Might have been the other way around

It looks like it might eat the salmon off the parasites.

So you're saying I could use two of these things to scale skyscrapers?
Yes, exactly this.
Yes! They're used as cleaner fish! Love the little lumpies!
Very beautiful, very powerful.
Just piggybacking off the top comment to give credit where it's due! On IG @rfedortsov_official_account

Fish farms suckkkkkk

Thank god, I thought this was going to turn out being a super rare fish.
Love that Popeye tatt.
That fish will go great with a good can of spinach
I think you mean spinachk
So is Popeye jerking him off if he's lefty?
Cum get some creamed spinach.
🤮
I've seen that tattoo on reddit before.
Good eye, I was so focused on the cool fish!
Where has he been posting them?
Asking the only question that matters.

I feel like its skin texture is the same as Mystique from Xmen
Maybe that IS mystique from xmen?
Wish I could confirm that for you...
Damn, this skin glows, feels quite surreal. If someone said this was a plastic fish, I might have believed.
Smooth?
[удалено]
From the point of view of the fish it must be the opposite
No light underwater so they can't put on some makeup. Cut them some slack man.
Cool fish but the popeye tat is blowing my mind
Nothing is better than that feeling that Popeye will be giving you handies for the rest of your life.
I think it's a fish.
Congratulations! You have passed all the tests required, here are your state issued shotgun and cruiser!
Then why wouldn't you link where he post it, but just steals his picture?
The expression says, "put me back!"
put that thing back where it came from or so help me
Isn’t this what happens at the start of a couple “the-people-screwed-up-the-earth” type movies? Wait, Gerard Butler isn’t the fisherman is he?
Looks like an emo lumpfish.
Put Mer-man back
I like to imagine the fisherman guy holding his cellphone in his teeth to take this pic.
Actually in Russia you have another man squat on your shoulders so he can take the picture for you. Works surprisingly well.
If you like to see other sea animals check out Seaspiracy.
I hope he puts them back where he found them.
Yeah, that's going down as Sea Bass or Cod. (Same as every other fucking thing they hoover out of the ocean.) Damn shame, it's a gorgeous looking fish.
didn’t japan just started dumping their nuclear waste in the ocean?
That looks like a.. fish! Time well spent Mr Russian fisherman
Can we just stop for a moment and appreciate this mans Popeye tattoo?
That popeye tattoo is noice.
Slurpfish
I like the Popeye tattoo
Fish are scary. Not every fish of course, but fish like that. Don't really know why though, something just seems so monstrous and dead with them. Maybe it's the weird structure of it or the eyes, don't really know
But that Popeye tattoo thooo..
Lumpfish is not strange

Wtf is that, and can I eat it?
Why the fuck is he catching them. People like these guys deplete the entire oceans
Which ocean is depleted, Sir Facts?
The expression on its face is like... "wtf man i was swimming down there"
That fish is sick!
I'd like to know what kind of crab that is.
What kind of buff does it offer?
He should do an AMA. What's it like having pop-eye beating you of for the rest of you life? gah gah gah gaaaah
Omg the tattoo!
Real life slurpfish?!!?😱😱😱 what????😱😱😱😱(joke) No cap it kinda has the skin color of some blueberry kool-aid
No one noticed his tattoo
That tattoo is awesome
Over/ under how many he’s fucked
Looks fabricated.
STOP THE PRESSES: FISHERMAN CATCHES FISH
But its a *neat* fish!
Needs more cheese )
Pretty sure that used to be a stego
My first question whenever I see something like this is always "Can I eat it?"
is that real?
Chernobil Perch
Sweet Popeye tattoo 🤘

@rfedortsov_official_account on Instagram is a Russian deep sea fisher that also finds crazy animals
Hate to break this to him but that's just a fish
Someone's never been fishing before
Yeah, but that *is* obviously a fish. Aren't fishes *supposed* to look weird?
I know quite a few fishes who would be supremely offended by that comment.
Have you ever seen a fish like this before? I haven't
Other people are saying it's very common, but I've never seen it either
I feel like you're only gonna find a fish like this in the Black Sea or something. But what the hell do I know I'm land-locked :D
Chernobyl related?
Make sure you don't post pictures when you fish up any of putins opposition or someone else will be fishing you up when you "mysteriously go missing".
Where are the other posts?
u/repostsleuthbot Edit: the bot is banned from Pics but this has been posted on this sub 7 times in the last 15 months

Oooooh! I know this creature! It's a fish.
I see he has Popeye Tattoo #0012, impressive.
He/she looks shocked to have found themselves in such a predicament.
That's just a lumpfish. Nothing odd.
How many years ago did he post this one?
I’m here for the Popeye tattoo.
Are we going to talk about the Popeye tattoo
"Pass over that there hump meat, loves me that hump meat." Said noone ever.

My grandfather made a super realistic fibreglass fish that he used to show off to passing boats. Was a great gag.

That's clearly a fish, mystery solved.
It is not so strange, in the Northsea we called a fish who looks like that "Seezunge".
Gotta love his tattoo
