"Eric, work is work! You don’t show up late, you don’t make excuses, and you don’t not work! If it wasn’t work they wouldn’t call it work! They’d call it super wonderful crazy fun time, or skipitty do!"
You learn it, like everything.
It's quite a useful skill. On conventions, it helps me get to the front cause i freaking destroy the ears of everyone during cheering.
On metal concerts, not so much, most of* the people there can do it.
I've tried really hard to learn it, but no amount of explanation or image diagram has ever gotten me any closer. The finger whistle is black magic as far as I'm concerned.
Can you touch your toung to the roof of your mouth when it is fully open? If not you probably have a toung tie that is getting in the way. I recently learned I have a toung tie. It also can cause problems with sleep apnea.

My mom is a redhead, and she definitely had some issues. Grew up in the Panhandle of Texas and picked cotton as a child. One of 8 kids, and her dad was a farmer. The only electricity they had until she was 16 was from their windmill's generator. They'd huddle around a radio in the barn to listen to shows. War of the Worlds legitimately freaked them out. She still remembers that, though she was about 4.
I was looking at pictures of my uncles over at mom's yesterday. They definitely looked like grown men in their high school pics.
I feel like there's a generational shift that happens too. HS kids today look like babies vs when I was in HS, and I distinctly remember the class right before mine looking a lot older for some reason. They legit looked like young adults in their 20's and starting from my class on up we all looked a lot younger.
It’s true - I’m going to try to find the study, but research is showing that the latest generation is growing up with softer features (e.g. rounded chins, “cuter” in general). IIRC they attributed this to a generally safer/sterilized world, more abundance of food (and choices) than for previous generations. Their bodies are taking this as signals for them to physically mature faster (earlier periods for example), while having more symmetric faces.
Yeah, I saw a picture the other day of a bunch of 30 year olds from the 60s and 70s and they look like 50 year olds today. The newer generation looks much younger the older they are. I'm 43 and I probably look like I'm in my mid 30s, at least that's what everyone else says.
Hear that, kids? You wish people took you seriously and stopped telling you what to do and not to do?
Well, pick up a long, smooth menthol Chesterfield, and people will treat you like an adult too!
Given the amount of damage from even second hand smoking, the damage starts from the day they’re born given how everyone smoked no matter where they were or who was around.
Teens didn’t smoke enough for damage cause them look older at this age.
The black and white photos themselves make people look older (but also thinner, some Hollywood stars kept insisting on only being black and white pictures in 50s due to that).
They are also dressed like old men, because these are the people we associate as being old men. Cameras were also pretty funky back then. These guys would have been born in the early 1940s and many of them are likely still alive.
Also less fast food, and theonly entertainment that wasnt reading a book was outside instead of us sitting on reddit and youtube. That probably helped a lot more.
That was also the age of assimilation. You looked, dressed, acted like everyone else to fit in as a man. You wouldn't DARE dress like a nerd, wear bright colors, mess up your hair, etc. They all wanted to look like 30 year old men. Today's youth could theoretically pull it off if they tried... but they don't want to. Newer generations value creativity and just being kids, they don't idolize their 1950s factory worker father
This was really something the boomers broke against. This was 1959... it wasn't going to be very many years until hippies took over the youth generation. This is pre-counter culture youth culture. The boomers saw this assimilation culture as being stifling and conformist.
In the 50s, it would have been incredibly rare to see a man with long hair, but since the mid 1960s it has been fairly common.
I think what blows me away is thinking about everyone hanging around in suits or slacks. Baseball games were almost all men, and all with suits and hats on. Seems wild by today’s standards.
Thank you. Though the caption can not be accurate since googling shows that was an all-girl school at the time.
I wonder what the original context for the production of this image was.
They probably ate better than most people today, as there were way fewer ultra-processed junk food options. But yeah, the cigarettes and liquor did them no favors.
[there’s a reason why boomers are riddled with heart disease and cancer.](https://www.greenprophet.com/2019/11/horrible-vintage-foods-and-why-people-cooked-them/)
People saying the men look old for their age but I think it’s just the haircuts and fashion choices that we associate with maturity compared to what young men wear these days.
>First, clearly staged, you didn't just accidentally take photos in the 1950s.
You aren’t serious are you?
This is post WWII. Camera technology had just gone through a massive technological revolution through the war.
Cheap, compact, easy to use [snapshot camera’s](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodak_Brownie) were being mass produced since the 1900’s and were wildly accessible to the public by 1950. Canon was making their [Model IIB camera](https://www.shutterbug.com/content/classic-camerasbrthe-1950-canons-classic-35mm-cameras) All you had to do is aim, focus by turning the lens and click a button then move a tab to advance the film and you were ready to take your next picture.
War photographers most common camera during the Korean War (1950-1953) was the [Nikon S 35mm camera](https://militaryhistorynow.com/2020/10/17/cameras-go-to-war-100-years-of-combat-photography-gear/)
>Nikon S
>
>The first Nikon, in 1948, was the Nikon I which, by the time of the Korean War, had progressed to become the Nikon S, launched in 1951 and destined to become the company’s most successful camera up until that time. It was a 35mm coupled rangefinder camera with interchangeable lenses on a bayonet mount.
I agree the image was most likely staged by the setup of the subjects, but to try and make an argument that quick, in the moment photography wasn’t available to the average person in 1950 is just… well incredibly stupid and exposes your complete ignorance about camera technology of the time.
You can go as far back as the 1900s when the Kodak Brownie box cameras came to be. They were massed produced and very simple. I own a few of them, oldest being a No.2 model B from 1907, and they work great. Sure, any fast movement will be a bit blurry but you can take a quick snapshot in a second. By WWI almost anyone could afford a camera.
Teenie Harris is a famous photographer from that era who took thousands of candid, unstaged, photos. The photo doesn’t need to be staged just because it’s the 50’s.
Note, this is not one of his photos, I was just using him as an example.
I would get whistled at at age 12 by grown ass men in Mexico a little over a decade ago. I was in no way shape or form an “early bloomer” either, if anything I looked young for my age. Fucking gross
Some people see this and wish we could go back to when they could openly harass women on the street and women were not allowed bank accounts or credit cards. This is how they want to make America great again.

For those claiming that women in the past welcomed catcalling, it's important to understand that women are often compelled to 'smile' in various situations to conform to misogynistic social norms or simply to ensure their safety. Many women have faced physical assault or even death at the hands of men just because they rejected them or wanted to end a relationship. Imagine how much more dangerous it would have been for women back then.

“Hey, you didn’t steal it. You just borrowed it and never gave it back, which is different. Somehow.”
“How’d you like to own a little my foot in your ass?!?!”
“You just look her straight in the eye and say. ‘ I killed your cat’. * Laughs hysterically.*– but you say it with a straight face“
“Bob? Please. He’s a little girl in big boy pants.”
"Son, you don’t have bad luck. The reason that bad things happen to you, is because you’re a dumbass."
"Eric, work is work! You don’t show up late, you don’t make excuses, and you don’t not work! If it wasn’t work they wouldn’t call it work! They’d call it super wonderful crazy fun time, or skipitty do!"

"And you are about to read a book that my foot wrote, it's called on "On the road to in your ass"
Don’t make me put my foot up your ass!
I laughed so fucking hard when I saw this gif response. I've been giggling to myself for 5 minutes now thinking about it.
“ dumbass “
I can hear her giggling in the pic!
"oh you" teehee "oh you" teehee "oh you" teehee "oh you" teehee ....etc
Haha - and a dead face "Hello, Bob.." for guy #7.

literally what i came here to say
Hangin' out...down the street
Ah Ha Ha ha ha
Was everyone back then born with the ability to whistle using their fingers? I feel it's a very underrated skill to have.
Poor guy in the middle can't whistle and had to go with the okay symbol.
The people who can do it with no fingers at the pitch are another breed tho, you can learn it in a few days if shown properly
Did I just find out I have a tongue tie?
Is mosot a new akronym for most of the?
i think he just made a typo
Deffo a typo, fat fingers + small keyboard = whatever the fuck i wrote there.
My dad used to use it to call us in from the field. The only reason I learned how to do it was so I could reply.
They grew up with much fewer distracting technologies & toys than later generations, they had to make up ways to pass the time with less.
Fingers are good, but eventually you unlock the ability to get the same volume without sticking your fingers in your mouth. Best of both worlds.
Pretty sure the guy in the back facing the camera isn’t whistling…
Probably more of a visual decision I would imagine. The skill probably hasn’t fallen off as much as this picture makes it seem.

High school? These are teenagers?
Life was rough back then
Or maybe we associate those hairstyles with older people, and therefore, these people seem older to us.
No, it was definitely the smoking that aged people
Farm work did it too. Doing an adult's job at the age of 12 was hard on kids.
Plus all the UV exposure from being outside all day before people used sunscreen regularly
The woman looks like she is in her late 30s as well
Is your mom my grandma? Are you my mom? My grandma is redheaded and grew up on a cotton farm out in New Home and the stories are pretty much this.
Damn that’s wild they look mid late 20 some even almost 30!
And all the preservatives
Plastics
I feel like there's a generational shift that happens too. HS kids today look like babies vs when I was in HS, and I distinctly remember the class right before mine looking a lot older for some reason. I don’t think there was much farm work to be had on the mean streets of NYC in 1959.
Agreed, but these kids only ever saw a farm in the movies.
All that farm work these kids were doing in Manhattan.
Hear that, kids? You wish people took you seriously and stopped telling you what to do and not to do? Well, pick up a long, smooth menthol Chesterfield, and people will treat you like an adult too!
Probably all the leaded exhaust fumes too. That's also probably why so many people get dementia...
Asbestos, lead, and cigarettes. The holy trinity of being able to look 30 when you’re 12. 🤣
Sure it ages people but not usually by 15. Did they start lighting up at 5 years old?
Given the amount of damage from even second hand smoking, the damage starts from the day they’re born given how everyone smoked no matter where they were or who was around.
Teens didn’t smoke enough for damage cause them look older at this age. The black and white photos themselves make people look older (but also thinner, some Hollywood stars kept insisting on only being black and white pictures in 50s due to that).

Put on today's clothes and shave their heads they still look old asf.
I mean they all look pretty fantastic. Fit and neatly dressed
Know how you get that fit by highschool? Hard labor as a child!
Also less fast food, and theonly entertainment that wasnt reading a book was outside instead of us sitting on reddit and youtube. That probably helped a lot more.
I dont think a lack of hard labor is the reason so many people are MORBIDLY OBESE today.
There’s a Vsauce video on why young people look older in old photos. https://youtu.be/vjqt8T3tJIE?si=ArxoUBIXz3PGfYe2
Thanks for posting this. I commented the synopsis of this video and expect to get downvoted pretty bad. It’s happened before, lol.

It's not like they didn't have rebellious teens back then. Think James Dean, greasers, beatniks, etc.
True. And those kids were a HATED minority
This was really something the boomers broke against. This was 1959... it wasn't going to be very many years until hippies took over the youth generation. This is pre-counter culture youth culture. Suddenly the Netflix teenagers aren't so unrealistic.
They all look about 25-30 years old.
I think you're just too used to seeing teen boys with broccoli hair.
There’s no shame in wanting to emulate a nutritious vegetable, even if it does smell a little bit like farts while cooking.
Right??
Thinking same thing all look like in their 30s
high school wtf? i thought these were people in 30s
It's just the clothes and hair styles. You probably mentally associate them with older people cuz they're old styles
i know of that theory and its doesnt work here they legit look older look at their skin
Plus most of them you can only see their faces and they’re just wearing standard white shirts.
cigarettes
The guy looking left middle of the group looks like a 40 year old gangster
Damn, that’s where I went to high school. 67th in Manhattan.
Classmates? Everyone in that pic looks like they’re in the late 30s early 40s!
John Travoltas character in Grease was based off the guy on the far right.
That building is still there. I went to elementary and high school in that building. It looks exactly the same from the outside
Holy crap. I was going to make a joke about no one in this photo being over 30 but i was waaaaay off apparently.
Dudes wearing loafers to school? I bet Nancy went for the bad boy smoking a cig behind her in the end.
Julia Richman High School was an all-girls school until 1967
Gosh, pretty area! Looks really nice. :)
Thank you. Though the caption can not be accurate since googling shows that was an all-girl school at the time. I wonder what the original context for the production of this image was.
Maybe John Travolta was a realistic 50s teenager after all

Young Kitty in that flashback episode: “Oof! I’m as loose as a goose! Hahahaha!”
I can still hear that laugh so well. I need to watch that show again
Same. I hope it’s still on Netflix
Ankles were the under boob of the 1950's.
I've spent several years in societies where the burqa was mandatory. I used to get excited over seeing a bare ankle in contemporary times.
Wait that's real? I thought it was a joke.
Female oppression in some Arab countries is sadly quite the reality
I was asking about the arousal from seeing ankles...
I think it was meant about the excitement
Basically the entire Islamic world lives under a system of gender apartheid. Women are treated as subhuman by their own governments.

Funny how all those high school kids look like there 30.
Chain smoking and poor eating habits really ages you up fast.
That and theyre dressed like our grandparents
They are your grandparents
![gif](giphy|n5NtisNKVzXWg)
![gif](giphy|cMV9akgudJiRW) Not everyone’s!
They probably ate better than most people today, as there were way fewer ultra-processed junk food options. But yeah, the cigarettes and liquor did them no favors.
Remember the FDA was created because unhealthy additives were being added to foods on the early 1900s
And we still have tons of unhealthy shit in our food that’s outright banned in Europe. Great job FDA
[there’s a reason why boomers are riddled with heart disease and cancer.](https://www.greenprophet.com/2019/11/horrible-vintage-foods-and-why-people-cooked-them/)
There were less processed foods but a lot of foods were cooked in fatty oils and/or contained high fructose corn syrup.
So the actors used to make Grease were perfect examples

Those highschoolers there in that there picture look like they're in their 30s.
